Bill Dixon

Position: Music Specialist
School: West Bainbridge Elementary School
School District: Decatur County School District
City, State: Bainbridge, GA

Bill Dixon was nominated by a colleague who wished to remain anonymous.

Mr. Dixon teaches music to students from pre-K through fourth grade at West Bainbridge Elementary. He takes additional time to work with chorus students in grades 3 and 4. He organizes an annual trip so that these students can go and demonstrate their talents at a competition out of town. The work he does with these students allows them to showcase talents they normally wouldn't be able to showcase. Furthermore, giving these students such an opportunity gives many of them the extra motivation they need to perform academically in the classroom. For all of his efforts to help students maximize their potential, Mr. Dixon is a LifeChanger!

Mr. Dixon was my chorus teacher in junior high back in the 80's. He had a huge impact on my life. It wasn't because as a 7th grader he seemed like a giant. It was because of his passion for music and teaching that came through in everything he did. I truly believe that he has helped to make each boy and girl he has taught into a gentleman or a lady. He made each of us want to do better in everything we did (or continue to do). He encouraged each of us in the way we needed to be encouraged. I still the final chorus concert my 9th grade year. He closed the concert by singing the Michael W. Smith song "Friends are Friends Forever." I think each of us felt he was singing that song, in his deep bass voice, to us personally. His love of music, teaching, and of the Lord has been something I have kept with me to this day. Thank you Mr. Dixon for sharing your gifts with so many.

Bill Dixon changed my life in more ways than I can count. As my junior high choral director he inspired I me to a great love of music that I still have now (30 years later). As a coach he challenged me to push myself harder than I wanted to and that anything worth having will require my best effort. As a leader in that school he demonstrated how to lead a God honoring life. Personally and specifically when my life was at a dangerous cross road and I was making choices that could have hurt me, he had the courage to speak truth into my life and hold me accountable when few others would. His words probably saved my life. Uncle Bill, as my children call him, is still my friend. Even now when I need someone to listen and/or pray I know I can always count on him.

Mr. Dixon is one of the most patient teachers that I have every had the privileged of working with. He is passionate about his students. He does not rush through his classes, he makes sure that each student gets the music education that they deserve. He puts countless hours into creating many different opportunities for the students to demonstrate their talent through activities such as school plays and performances. Each time I get the privilege to see his students in action is am reminded of how lucky that West Bainbridge Elementary is to have him. They say to lead by example, well Mr. Dixon does just that! He is truly a Life Changer!

Goal setter, passionate, sense of humor, athlete (can bike a hundred miles... a DAY), centered, calm -- so many positive words will be used to describe this true giant. At 6'8" he stoops to enter a common door... and that is where "common" ends. His musical talent and experience is big time; the outcomes upon the youngsters in his musical program will be lifetime. I am aware of musical superstars, currently performing, who have called upon Bill Dixon to assist them in preparation for the rigors required to achieve top performance in their careers. I can attest that several of the folks who provide comments within this application, many from 20-30 years ago, attribute much of their success and "life attitude" to participation in musical opportunities created and coordinated by Bill Dixon. He is an uncommon man - even his rehearsals and practices begin and end at "uncommon" times... 6:36 to 8:06. A thorough search of credentials for Bill Dixon will reveal great strength of character, superior musical competence and outstanding leadership. I predict the selection committee will find no finer candidate.

Often in conversation I talk about the 3 most important men in my life, my dad, my youth minister, and my junior high chorus teacher. That last one gets a lot of interesting looks and questions. Bill Dixon is that man. I was immensely prepared for a college music major by what I learned in his classroom in junior high. In fact, my entire college freshman music curriculum was reviewing all that I had learned in 7th grade. I made straight A's. Not only did he prepare me for academic music in college, he helped prepare me for life and manhood. In a day when it was ok for a teacher to truly invest his time and energy into students, without suspect, Bill Dixon did that. He spent countless hours in the classroom and out, teaching me music, and showing me the many opportunities that singing brings. Whether it was at an all state chorus concert in Savannah Georgia, eating oysters after the concert, or singing on a flatbed trailer in the middle one of the most beautiful farms in North east Georgia: with integrity, humility and most importanty, humanity, Bill Dixon invested in me. I am a better man because of him, he truly changed my life.

Basso Profundo. In the truest sense of the word. William Warren Dixon, Jr. is a bear of a man who stands at 6’5 with a deep cavernous voice that resonates like thunder. When you’re an under-sized sixth grader, seeing him walk into a room can make quite an impression. I met Mr. Dixon more than 33 years ago and I can say unequivocally that he changed my life for the better. It goes without saying that he knows his job. He’s a great musician. A great singer. A great educator. He’s insightful. He’s funny. He’s devoted. He’s compassionate. He sees the goodness in people and brings it out of them. He loves God. He loves music. He loves his students. He was my favorite teacher growing up and I was his favorite student… Or, at least, that’s how he made me feel. But really, that’s Mr. Dixon’s gift. He makes all of his students feel special. He made me look forward to class, to singing, to learning. He’s a role model who exemplifies dignity, kindness, enthusiasm, faith, dedication and honesty. He gives young people a deep lasting appreciation of music and the arts. But most importantly, he inspires students to grow into good and decent people. He’s a great, big man who left a made a great, big impact on my life. And I’m thankful to have had him as my teacher.

There is something compelling and inspirational about Bill at the core of who he is! People are drawn to him and that is only the beginning of the impact he has on people. I have known Bill almost 27 years! His commitment to impacting students and his community flows out of his character not out of a sense of duty. If there are two words to describe him, it would definitely be life changer. He changed mine and I am forever grateful!!!

I'm pretty sure you won't find a person on this planet who cares more about helping people learn to love music. Bill's impact on my life growing up, as he served as music minister and temporary youth leader at my church, is significant. He developed a passion in my heart to praise the Lord through singing and making a joyful noise. His passion for the Lord and music is evident in all he does, and everyone who sits in his class or choir benefits from his patience, knowledge, and tallent. He is certainly the most deserving of this award, hands-down.

Bill Dixon's talent and teaching ability are a huge blessing to West Bdge Elem and Decatur Co. Schools! He introduces music to these young students and encourages them to expand their talent before most of them or their families have even realized they have musical ability. I believe the programs put on at WB Elem are superior to any in the state. He makes learning fun for the students and not just music. He teaches them rhyming songs such as the 50 states, etc. He is most definitely a life changes in his school, his church, his community, and Fla State University.

I have had the honor if knowing Bill Dixon since college days at Samford University. He was one of the most respected gentlemen on campus and within our Fraternity. His unselfish sharing of his life and music was unbounded as he led our fraternity in the campus music competition called Step Sing - which resulted in several victories in this competition. He also led the fraternity as our Archon. My wife and I were honored with his singing at our wedding in 1983 - so memorable and beautiful. Bill has a long long history of giving of himself and his music that has touched many lives, always in a positive uplifting way.what an honor it has been to know him and call him friend!!!

Bill Dixon had a major influence in my life I regards to music. In 1983 i was fortunate enough to find myself in his chorus class; a class I wasn't suppose to be in but nevertheless ended up there (some things are just meant to be). So from my first day in his class in 7th grade until today choral music has been a part of my life. I have him to thank for that. My life has been enriched by music from the people I have met, to the places I have been, and the joy I have experienced by singing a little one to sleep. From churches, concert halls, even Carnegie Hall, and from a rocking chair-the joy of music fills my soul. It all started with Bill Dixon.

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention...he can organize an awesome Christmas production!

I would concur that Bill Dixon is a "Life Changer". While his teaching at West Bainbridge Elementary is the most recent example, I've had the pleasure of knowing students from his earlier teaching jobs in the Jonesboro area. His influence on their lives as their teacher has been lasting and impressive. I've observed these former students over a period of years and it's obvious that Bill impacted their lives in a very positive way. Many have become parents, are active in their children's education, and overall good citizens. They stay in touch with Bill and show their appreciation for his mentoring on a regular basis. There's no doubt in my mind that he's a "Life Changer".

I have known Bill Dixon since college. He had a great influence on me as a new member of Samford Accepella choir. His love for choral music was obvious then. He worked hard to support and help Dr. Black, our director, when he was the graduate assistant. I will always remember Bill for what he did for the choir.

I've known Bill for probably 20 yrs. He has always allowed others the opportunity to perform, etc. We call him a gentle giant and he's been our church music minister for many, many years....maybe 20. He's also taken many college students on mission trips to Germany. He changes lives in Germany as well....singing with their students. Could go on and on and happy to.....just message me if you need more! Very, very, deserving.
