Debra Redington was nominated by her superintendent, Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat.

In 1985, after a successful career as a performer, choreographer and studio dance teacher, Mrs. Redington joined the Peoria Public Schools as a dance teacher at the newly-formed Roosevelt Magnet School for the Arts, teaching K-8 dance and drama. After joining her colleagues at Roosevelt Magnet School for the Arts, Mrs. Redington said, "I love dance and I love children. I walked into the beautiful Roosevelt Theater and knew this was meant for me. A majority of my students were low income and would never have been able to afford a dance education. I was allowed to build my own curriculum and a performance experience these students would never forget."

Mrs. Redington later moved on to the Preparatory School for the Arts at Peoria High School. Currently, the PSA Dance Program has 51 students in grades 9 – 12. She is a tireless and enthusiastic team-player. Her students come from diverse socio-economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds. Unless they attended Roosevelt Magnet School, most of her students have had little or no formal dance training prior to high school.

"Debi is not only an instructor and mentor for our students, she performs with them as well," said Dr. Coleman, PHS principal. "Debi's modeling of lifelong learning and commitment to the program is instrumental in the eyes of our students and promotes student retention."

"Her high expectations and ethical standards for her students are not only effective in the dance studio, but in their academic courses also. It is because of the proven ability of Mrs. Redington that our students have attended and performed in high-caliber productions, met with and received coaching from professional artists, and most importantly, received college scholarships for their talents."

Each day, Mrs. Redington instills in her students the desire to continually do better and not settle for less than their best. She teaches them that working hard can produce great outcomes, and having respect for others and a grateful attitude is extremely important. Ms. Redington helps her students achieve confidence over time, and makes sure they are held responsible for their own actions. Her students are constantly building life skills through their daily practices and interactions. She teaches them to respectfully critique others and take care of their bodies. Mrs. Redington also offers peer tutoring and small group practices to build support and camaraderie. They have over 20 performance opportunities each year to build confidence. She helps her students learn how to become role models in school and within the Peoria community.

Mrs. Redington creates a nurturing environment for students in the dance program by giving them each a locker to keep their belongings safe, a garment bag to care for their costumes, their own mat for exercises, and a dressing room stocked with lotions, deodorants and hair essentials. She gives students ample opportunities to lead, and gives positive feedback when needed. Her students have her cell phone number so they can contact her if they need help. Her senior dancers graduate with the knowledge of how to stay fit and healthy, as well as skills to build endurance and flexibility. They are taught to be grateful for the talents they possess and share those talents to help others. Mrs. Redington wants them to graduate believing that if they are prepared and work hard, there is nothing they cannot accomplish.

Mrs. Redington is also on the leadership team at Peoria High School. According to former principal Brett Elliott, "Debi is a life coach for her students an example to her colleagues of the power of fostering strong relationships, belief in her students and constant coaching."

As a successful fund-raiser, Mrs. Redington has secured grants and coordinated campaigns to purchase costumes for her dancers and to expose them to professional dance performance that they would not otherwise be able to attend. She has received grants from the Community Foundation of Central Illinois, the Peoria Public Schools Foundation and the Maggie Bertram Foundation for the Arts. In addition, Mrs. Reddington sells caramel apples in autumn throughout the Peoria Public Schools district, making weekly deliveries on her own time to district school buildings.

Students graduating from the PSA dance program have earned scholarships to study dance on the college level. Even those who pursue other professions use the lessons from Mrs. Redington's dance program to continue as successful college students.

"After graduating from high school, I knew I had to dance in college, and it was all because of Mrs. Redington," said PHS alumni Destini Edwards. "She had, and still does have, the most confidence in the world for me. She makes me feel like I can do anything as long as I just go for it, and that's what I did."

"Mrs. Redington gives us bigger opportunities than we think we can do and she challenges us to do better," said Jadi Gordon, a current PHS student. "She expects greatness from all of her dancers, and we have met the challenges because she pushes us out of our comfort zone into new experiences and challengers."

Deb was the dance instructor and choreographer for the many productions that my children were able to experience at Roosevelt. She showed them dancing and moving to music could be accomplish with practice, even at the very young age of 5. All of my children enjoy dancing to this day and have encouraged their own chidren to pursue dance. They all still talk about the enjoyable experiences they were able to have while in Mrs. Redington's dance classes.

It is perfect timing to acknowledge and recognize the efforts of a truly dedicated and outstanding educator like Debi Redington. In today's society among so many threats in our world and particularly to our schools we are counting on those who choose to make a difference in the lives of our youth. Debi Redington has single handedly created a learning environment that is also a "soft place to land" for her diverse group of students. Despite the funding and tough hills to climb in the arts, Debi has committed her entire career to teach others about the arts , express themselves in positive ways and encourage them to dream that anything is possible! Debi has an infectious enthusiasm for overcoming the odds of making things happen and is tenacious in her efforts to make a difference in the lives of her students. We all remember that one educator who made a difference in our lives and we still speak of them.....imagine how many times Debi Redington's name is on the lips of her students, how she has made a difference in their lives so they can make a difference in other's lives. Debi isn't just an educator...she is a movement, to a time when our educators are facing more obstacles than ever before and demonstrate that love matters...and that 's a game changer.

II have known Debbie for over 40 years. She is passionate about dance and conveys that to students. She taught a bunch of high school boys a dance to perform at homecoming skits. We still talk about it, 37 years later. She was patient and communicated well with us. I know she does the same today. She instills confidence in her dancers. In my summer job, I work with many high school students. All of her dancers speak highly of Debbie. She goes above and beyond the classroom. She really is a life changer and is deserving of this award.

Debra is a very upbeat and positive person. She is completely committed to her students and providing a very unique experience for them. I would describe it as a family atmosphere, where students know they are cared for and are in a safe place to learn and grow. When I am at Peoria High I usually stop by and see Debra, and her room is never empty even if she doesn't have a class. I think that alone sums up the environment she provides for her students.

Mary Kay Posted over a year ago

I have known Debi for over 20 years and she does not expect anything from anyone else that she doesn't expect from herself. She is a wonderful role model teaching by example. Debi taught at a small Catholic grade school for several years, sacrificing income to teach dance to students who otherwise would not have been exposed to that art. My 3 children went through 8 years of dance with her. She reinforced her values of respect, self-confidence and the ability to achieve higher levels. To watch a group of 7th and 8th grade boys dance their hearts out for her pretty much sums up Debi in a nutshell. This is just a small sampling of the hundreds of students lives she has touched and have made better!

I’ve known Mrs.Redd since I went to Roosevelt back in like 2010/2011. I wasn’t in her dance class but she always gave a friendly smile when I seen her! A few years later I got in high school & I was in the PSA program @ Central but it wasn’t for dance. & I use to just stop by & visit her class I loved her like she was one of my teachers. Later that school year I tried out for the dance team & even before I made the team Mrs. Redd use to encourage me to do better & keep up w my grades. She made me really want to do better & change my ways bc I wanted to dance soooo bad! She gave me a chance & she put me on her dance team. She motivated me when I felt like giving up because I felt like nobody believed in me. She never treated me any differently just bc of my past. A lot of teachers looked down on me but Mrs Redd inspired my passion for dance & taught me so many things & she kept me going. Although I wasn’t able to stay on the team bc I switched schools Mrs. Redd still kept up with me through emails! She truly has a heart for everyone & she’s willing to do anything for anyone! I love her so much & it’s our Senior year & Mrs.Redd’s last year because she retires. I’m grateful to even know this tiny little lady with such a big heart!

"Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body." Debbie brings the best out in her students, often at a critical age when they are discovering all they can be. She is passionate it, goes above and beyond, and truly cares (and worries) about each one of them. Her expectations are high of each student, and in return, they are proud of what they achieve. Clearly the comments here prove that she has touched many lives in such a positive and extraordinary way.

Mrs. Redington tries to accommodate everyone and make everyone as happy as possible. I love Mrs. Redington and will do anything for her because she truly deserves it. Deb Redington is one of those rare individuals who enters your life and her presence stays there. Her infectious enthusiasm for life is difficult to ignore. She is a cheerleader, dance instructor, colleague, teacher, friend and mom. The ability to give reluctant children as well as adults the confidence to engage in dance in front of an audience is a gift. I have watched this confidence build and overflow into other areas of learning. Congratulations Deb! You truly are a “lifechanger” and deserving of this award.

I have watched Mrs. Redington give her entire heart and soul into every endeavor she undertakes with and for her students. She is an outstanding mentor and role model. She never lowers the bar to make sure kids are successful, but instead, inspires young hearts and minds to 'believe' in themselves, not only to 'rise to the challenge,' but many times far surpassing it. She is the kind of adult from which you wish your own children could learn and grow. Her wisdom, knowledge, talent, PASSION, compassion and self-less giving are unsurpassed. Yet she is never boastful, but rather, filled with humility. This is such a powerful combination rarely found in one individual, yet is exactly what every young student needs. She is not just a 'game changer' for all the young lives she has touched, but a 'life changer.'

I have known Debi all my life. She is my aunt. Now as an adult with my own kids now, I think back to Debi a lot. She always had so much going on in her life that was constantly busy, but she ALWAYS did it with a positive attitude. I rarely saw her upset or negative. I look up to her then and now because of how much she balanced work with motherhood, which isn't easy. I know she was able to balance it because she loved both of those worlds. She fiercely loves her own kids, but she also loved her students. She changed so many lives during her years at school, but she also changed a lot of lives in her own family. She is an amazing woman, anyone would be lucky to know.

I love Mrs. Redington! She is an amazing teacher. My girls have been with her since Roosevelt and she is the main reason they came to PHS. When they decided to concentrate on dance it was mainly because they wanted to learn from "Mrs. Red" as they call her. She is always teaching the students how to work in harmony, how to be "performers", and she lets them know that dance is more than just going on the stage and moving around. She also instills in them responsibility, and prioritizing their schedules. I love that she lets the students be creative but still oversees their music, dances and attire to insure it is respectful to the audience. Mrs.Redington is always looking for ways to promote the PSA program and has gotten many rave reviews from the community. She puts her heart and soul into the program and you can see it in the performances. My Twins will have great memories to pass on to future generations.

Mrs. Redington is a life changer whether or not she wins this award. In two years of knowing her, I've witnessed her impact on students. She loves what she does and provides opportunities for students that they otherwise might not be getting either at another school or from another teacher. Her classroom is a safe space and when you walk in, you see how comfortable and confident the students are in that setting. She is always smiling. I can only hope to have half the impact on Peoria kids that she has had in her distinguished tenure. :)

raquel Posted over a year ago

It's not common to see a colleague so deeply in love with her job after so many years as Mrs. Redington is. Always with a smile on her face and sharing kind words with students and teachers alike, she seems to float in a world where we, the rest of mortals, elbow our way among "sorry" and "excuse me". It must be the dance and music that makes her be that way! But her soft manner hides a strong determination that never surrenders when difficulties lie ahead. She won't accept a "no" to a project she plans for her students and she'll negotiate an alternative: Only the best for them and the same opportunities as everywhere else. Students feel her support and follow her lead, convinced they can do anything they work hard for. I am not the least surprised she was nominated for this award and hope she gets it. Best of luck!

She deserves this award because she works hard no matter what she has no limit . She thinks the world of dance is bigger than anything . She believes and everyone and anyone she meets . I've been in this program for two years now and Mrs. Redington has helped me so much. I've have learned how to work with people that I don't get along with, I've learned to strengthen my leadership skills, and learn so many new things about dance. I no longer can dance in the class, due to injures, but Mrs. Redington still keeps me involved with everything. She a great teacher and an overall wonderful person.

Mrs. Redington is a very influential instructor for my technique, musicality, and artistry. She has taught me, a classical ballet dancer for 14 years, how to do hip hop, African dance, etc. We each learn things from each other.

She expects us to do more than we think we can do, she pushes us to do better. I'm happy to have had this experience with Mrs.Red as my teacher.

Mrs.Redington should win because she's a wonderful dancer and teacher. She's been taught me 7-9 grade and I've enjoyed every part of it. She doesn't just teach us to become amazing dancers she also teaches her students to become young mature adults with positive attitudes. I am thankful for her because she's a very helpful and open person.

I can't think of a more deserving person to receive the Life Changer Of The Year Award then Debi Redington. I have followed her for over 25 plus years and continue to be amazed at the amount of kids/adolescents lives she has turned around by introducing them to dance, drama, singing and putting out Broadway caliber performances each and every time. She does anything and everything in her power to help the less privileged kids to have a positive sense of self, and does so by modeling everything she preaches including but not limited to, love, respect, discipline, and thinking of and reaching out to others in need. She writes grants, sells candy apples, volunteers for anything and everything to raise money for her students. What she doesn't raise, she takes from her own money. This is Debi Redington's last year of teaching and while the other. Andidates are wonderful as well, I. Eli's she they have many years left to teach. I can't think of a better way to send Debi Redington into retirement years then to bestow this award upon her. If one could just see Debi Redington interact just one day with her students and witness her students interact with her, one would be proud to chose Debi Redington for this wonderful award and honor

When I first heard Debi was going to teach, I felt ecstatic. I was teaching, too, at the time (I retired after 29 years of teaching), and I know how much our young people need someone creative, fun, smart, and inspiring. All of those describe Debi! She epitomizes LifeChanger!

Mrs. Redington has been my dance teacher for the past four years and I wouldn’t be half of the person I am today if it wasn’t for her she doesn’t just teach us cheoragraphy she also teaches us things we can use later on in life Whether that be about becoming responsible, encouraging to others and to always chase our dreams no matter what obstacles get in the way. She’s definitely a worthy recipient of the life changer of the year award.

Mrs. Redington was my dance teacher when I first met her back when I was just a little 3rd grader. She was amazing!! I had the privilege of growing up as her neighbor and later becoming her friend and then her assistant dance teacher for a short time. There are very few people who are able to touch so many children’s and adult’s lives for the better, the way she can. She truly does make this world a better place.

I've known Debi since she was born and I was her dance teacher for many years. She is talented, hard-working and dedicated. Debi truly cares about others and always looks for the good in people. Her positive attitude and sense of humor make learning fun for her students. She works so hard at fundraising, research, choreography, applying for grants, etc., to make things better for her students because she knows they're worth it. It is so difficult to instill confidence, belief in oneseslf and respect for others, especially in children and teens. Yet, that is what Debi does so well. Her student not only become well skilled in dance. Through Debi's encouragement and example, they learn life skills as well. She is a true "Lifechanger".

As a former school board member, I can attest to the fact that Deb Redington is enthusiastic, passionate and gifted when it comes to furthering our students' educations. She thrives at seeing the students succeed and she believes that each student has a purpose in life and a valuable contributor to his/her community. She also instills in her students the importance of how to conduct themselves and how this will impact their future. The performances of her dance team at the half-time of football and basketball games is especially important as she knows there are administrators, board members, alumni, faculty, fellow students, the public and college recruiters in the stands. She always displays a dance that tests their abilities, while still being entertaining and most importantly, exudes class. I would highly recommend Mrs. Redington for the Life Changer of the Year Award as she is teaching these students skills that will last a lifetime. By performing in front of crowds, her students have grown in confidence and with a mind-set that they can take on any challenge and overcome it with grace and skill. We are proud to have her at Peoria High and in Peoria Public Schools.

I have only worked with Debi Redington for 3 years, but during this short time I have seen her love and passion for both students and the arts program. I feel blessed to have gotten to know her these past few years, and only think amazing things about her. It is obvious that the students not only respect her, but trust her as well. I know that she has touched many lives throughout the years and is most definitely worth of the Life Changer of the Year Award.

I have had the honor of working alongside Mrs. Redington in my 6 years in the school district. She was my mentor as I came in to the district and took over the primary dance position. Over the years she has been a leading example of what my program could become and what my students will become if they continue into her program. I am continuously amazed by Debi's selfless actions for her students and the dance program she has built. The performances keep getting bigger and better and the lessons she has taught them will keep with them through their entire life. I admire her passion for dance and teaching and hope one day to be able to become the same type of teacher. She is a role model for all who know her or interact with her. I am so thankful for all she has taught me and the knowledge she has shared with me to make me a better teacher.

Mrs. Redington was a fantastic mentor when she worked at Roosevelt. I studied as a novice teacher under her when I studied at Bradley University. I was amazed with how hard her dance class students worked and I was touched by how much she truly cared about each and every one. Her students worked hard and put together fantastic dances all choreographed by her. She was and is a role model for not only her students, but for aspiring teachers as well.
