Brenda Manuel was nominated by a student, Danielle Rawles.

As the creator and director of the Los Angeles Unified School District Student Involvement, Development and Empowerment Unit, Dr. Manuel is a strong and devoted advocate for the student voice. She is highly respected for her work in cultivating student leaders, as she serves as a mentor and role model for many students, including Rawles. Her dedication to students is evident in her professional endeavors through the Aspen Challenge, LAUSD Youth Conferences, Associated Student Body Meetings, Superintendent Student Advisory Council, the LAUSD Student Member of the Board position and the Village Movement.

The partnership between LAUSD and the Aspen Institute that made the Aspen Challenge accessible to all schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District was initiated by Dr. Manuel. The Aspen Challenge is a rigorous competition in which student teams choose a global issue to solve within their school community. This opportunity allowed students to sharpen their creative, critical and innovative thinking skills to find solutions to monumental challenges, including, but not limited to, California’s drought and student-on-student bullying. She compelled and inspired students to think outside the box and implement sustainable solutions to improve their school communities. The winning team received a trip to present at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado.

Dr. Manuel is the creator and coordinator of two annual student summits: the Young Men of Color Conference and the PowHer Up Conference. These summits motivate and equip hundreds of students to pursue excellence in their academics and future career endeavors. It is an opportunity for students to participate in seminars and network with successful professionals in education, entertainment, athletics, fashion, law, medicine and more. Dr. Manuel brilliantly selects powerful women to speak at PowHer Up and influential Men of Color to speak at the Young Men of Color Conference.

"From a student perspective, this focus on representation is extremely important," Rawles said. "It is enlightening and reassuring to see people who share similar experiences and backgrounds dominate their respective fields despite adversity. Dr. Manuel always teaches that success begins with believing in yourself and having a growth mindset. She encourages students at these conferences to follow their passion, find their voice, learn from others, remain true to themselves, and believe in the value and power of giving back."

Dr. Manuel saw a need to have a more inclusive student voice at both the school site and district level. She met that need by creating a forum for elected Associated Student Body (ASB) Presidents and their Leadership Advisors to meet during the school year. These meetings serve as a liaison from the Student Involvement, Development and Empowerment Unit to LAUSD school sites. Meetings often discuss student body finances, how to amplify the student voice and involvement, school climate, elections of the Student Member of the Board, and achieving the District goals: 100% graduation, proficiency for all, 100% attendance, parent and community engagement and school safety. ASB Presidents and their leadership teams are responsible for completing a year-long project in support of one or more District goals to facilitate concrete and sustainable change at their school site. Dr. Manuel teaches student leaders how to positively impact their school community and cultivate an effective and welcoming learning environment for all students.

Additionally, the LAUSD Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is a committee of selected high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors originated and organized by Dr. Manuel that meets with Superintendent Dr. Michelle King six times per academic year. This committee directly advises Dr. King from the student perspective on District policy and initiatives, and is responsible for sharing knowledge gained with their Associated Student Body President and Leadership team. Similar to the role of ASB President, members of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council conduct annual student projects to provide viable solutions to targeted issues at their respective school sites. These projects are then presented to the Superintendent, distinguished LAUSD personnel, and student leaders. This council also advises the Student Member of the Board, who attends all SSAC meetings. Dr. Manuel created this council to serve as a link between the Superintendent, Student Board Member, and LAUSD students. She strives to make leadership opportunities such as this accessible and attainable for all students. She believes each student’s voice is valuable and should be heard.

Dr. Manuel reinstituted the position of Student Member of the Board of Education. Now, the students of LAUSD are represented directly by a board member whom they elected. This position has proven to be effective in bringing the student perspective, which is necessary in considering decisions within LAUSD. The Student Board Member (SBM) has the ability to propose resolutions for the Board’s review. Though the duty to speak for over 600,000 students seems daunting, Dr. Manuel ensures the SBM remains connected to the interests and needs of students through focus groups, SSAC advising, ASB meetings and open dialogues via email and social media.

Furthermore, Dr. Manuel founded the Village Movement, an initiative for LAUSD employees and volunteers to mentor LAUSD students. Its goal is to provide students with the necessary skills to enable them to be college-prepared and career-ready. This movement exposes students to role models who have overcome their own challenges in order to be productive citizens. The Village Movement has expanded to 28 schools serving over 420 students. Dr. Manuel created the Village Movement to help students feel competent, confident, connected to others, respected and in control of their learning. This initiative improves the lives of students individually and collectively by cultivating a safe, nurturing environment where students are comfortable sharing their personal and academic lives with their Villager. In the words of Dr. Manuel, The Village Movement’s role is “to help students study – but not study for them; to help them prepare – but not to prepare for them; and to help give them a roadmap to graduation – but not drive them to the finish line.” She empowers students to not only improve themselves, but share the wealth among those who are not part of the movement.

"Personally, I am a result of Dr. Manuel’s mission to cultivate student leaders," Rawles said. "As my mentor, she encouraged me to join the 2015 Aspen Challenge Team at Westchester High School to step outside of my comfort zone of being just a member. I was a shy ninth grader who was intimidated and apprehensive; I had not previously led any groups or exercised leadership skills. I did not see myself as a leader. This leap earned me the title of the youngest member of our Aspen Challenge Team, and with hard work, a member of the 2015 winning team. I had the privilege to present at the Aspen Ideas Festival – an intellectually stimulating experience that was life changing and surreal."

"As a result of my participation in the Aspen Challenge, I now see myself as a leader," Rawles continued. "Presently, I am a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Student Advisory Council, Associated Student Body President of Westchester High School, President of Ladies of Ethnic Advancement and Dignity Scholars, President of Holy St. Andrews’ Youth Department and Interpretative Dance Team, and a Bill Sponsor in Youth and Government. Dr. Brenda Manuel believed in me when I did not believe in myself. Now, I know my voice matters and it can be used to enact positive, concrete change."

Dr. Manuel is devoted to increasing the student voice by ensuring that students have the power to inform and influence policies to be reflective of the realities, needs and solutions from the student perspective. Her passion for students is shown daily in her creation of and work with LAUSD’s Student Involvement, Development and Empowerment Unit. She truly values inclusivity and firmly believes that every student can succeed.

"I speak for myself and countless other students in saying that I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Manuel for challenging me to reach new heights as a leader. Dr. Brenda Manuel will forever be a life changer in my eyes," Rawles said.

Dr. Manuel was featured in the Southwest Wave Newspaper on February 23, 2017. They announced that she was nominated for the Life Changer of the Year Award. I just wanted to make sure that the nomination committee knew that she is very supported by her community. If you look at her comments, they come from friends, colleagues, students, neighbors, mentees, and from some that only know her by her name and work. They come from her church, social organizations, neighborhood and place of work. She is so well grounded and rounded that no matter where she goes she is the same. I hope the committee googles the Southwest Wave Newspaper and reviews the article on Dr. Manuel. Also the LAUSD Communications Branch tweeted out to the school community about her nomination as well as Professional Organizations posted it on Facebook and in their Newsletters. She has been well celebrated and now I want to comment, support her nomination as well as celebrate her.

Dr. Manuel is so deserving of this award. She works with student leaders in our District and I am one of them. She has spent a lot of time this year registering students to vote. She so inspired me that I am now spearheading a voter registration drive at my school for the spring. I want to do this because she informed us that it is up to us if change is going to occur and I believe her. I want to be the change and to make change in this world and that is why I am doing this voter campaign. All because I was inspired by a great role model-Dr. Manuel. I support her nomination!!

As I was reading through all of the comments, I felt compelled to write one for myself. I am so honored that Danielle Rawles thought enough of me to nominate me. I am also so humbled by the comments and the impact that God has blessed me to have on others. My philosophy is that It is very important that we treat others as we would like to be treated and to live in such a way that others want to live in the same manner. I have a servants spirit and want to help others to better their lives and to live happy, healthy, productive and prosperous lives. I know that this is my mission, my calling that God wants me to do. I am committed to making this world better so that the young people coming up will have an easier time. I want to thank the National Life Group for creating this Life Changers Award. It has allowed me to receive my blessings and flowers while I can still smell and read them. I also want to say that one of the young men who posted a comment has now passed away. He was one of my students and the words that he wrote will be cherished by me. I am so saddened by his death because he was a young gifted black man who was making his way in the world as an entertainer (singer). He will be missed by me and many others. I was able to read his comment and to know that I made a difference in his short life-I was a Life Changer to him and I did not know it until it was expressed in his comment. This has been what has made this nomination so special-I learned that I have made a difference and that I have been a Life Changer to many adults and students. To God be the Glory!

Dr. Brenda Anne Manuel, (or affectionately known as “Dr. BAM”) is a true force to be reckoned with. Life Changer of the Year is only one title that should be given to her along with Savior, Hero and Guardian Angel to name a few (because they all apply). Although I know her on a more personal level being her nephew, I have witnessed so much that she has accomplished through her work in the LAUSD. One of her projects that resonate with me is the Young Men of Color Leadership Conference, because it addresses a group that totally gets overlooked and underserved. Many times this population is highlighted in the media with negativity and more recently being the subject of shootings by police officers. This program teaches these young men that they have a choice in whom they want to be and helps guide them into a positive direction while exposing these young men to adult men who look like them that are already doing great things to benefit their communities. The impact of the program on these inner city, young men will last and help cultivate the seed of “being a productive member of society” which we cant have too many of. This is only one example of how my aunt Brenda “walks her talk” and demonstrates her passion for the education of young people. Selection committee, please select Dr. Brenda Manuel as your Grand Prize Winner, as she is someone who has passionately committed her life to changing others’ lives.

The fact that Dr. Brenda Manuel was nominated by a student speaks volumes. Dr. Manuel is an amazing educator and has been for over 30 years. From her time spent in the classroom to her present experience as the creator and Director of Los Angeles Unified School District's Student Empowerment Unit, where she is in her 4th and 5th years of hosting LAUSD's Young Men and Women of Color Conferences (which by the way she also created within the district), Dr. Brenda Manuel is more than a life changer, she is a life-line for so many young people and educators in LAUSD and beyond. It is with this that I unequivocally support Brenda Manuel's nomination for 2018 life changer of the year.

Words cannot truly express my extreme gratitude for all the change Dr.Manuel has incited not only for me, but for many students within the vast Los Angeles Unified School District-the second largest school district in the nation-a task not easily achieved. At the beginning of my high school years, as a student passionate about the student voice and advocacy for a better education, I felt that I had a lot to say, but nowhere to express it, as the district can often feel like a distant macrocosm that is seemingly unreachable for many students. However, due to Dr.Manuel’s perseverance and advocacy for the student voice, as she had the determination to start the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC), I was finally given the opportunity to create the change I so passionately believed in. Through Dr.Manuel’s mentorship, she has provided me many opportunities including to speak on behalf of my fellow classmates at a Facebook convention (InspirED) for youth, present a project about student empowerment directly to the Superintendent, speaking at a “Woman of Color” conference, serving on other school district committees, and being elected president of the Superintendent’s Council. My participation in this council Dr.Manuel guided me through has been greatly instrumental to my growth as a student and advocate. Whether Dr.Manuel and I are laughing over interesting fashion choices or devotedly brainstorming ideas on how to strengthen the student voice, I can honestly say that every time I leave an experience I have had with Dr.Manuel, I leave with a feeling of excitement and empowerment. Ultimately, I am grateful and honored to have been given the chance to be a student impacted by the firework of a social justice warrior that Dr. Manuel sparks in every student she encounters.

I heartily agree that Dr. Manuel is deserving of this nomination. When the League of Women Voters, Los Angeles, reached out to Los Angeles Unified School District to participate in a civic engagement event for high school students, Dr. Manuel stepped up. It is a testament to her dedication and support of youth as they develop knowledge and skills to make a difference in their communities. Dr. Manuel continued her relationship with the League of Women Voters by helping us set up voter registration at LAUSD high schools and through the Los Angeles Youth Civic Engagement Collaborative, composed of organizations that work to strengthen civic competency in our youth. I respect and admire Dr. Manuel for developing an adult mentor program for students. Looking forward to continued collaboration with her in the future!

Dr. Manuel has been very good at creating systems uniquely designed to serve young people. She works to take away those things that adversely impact their social, academic and emotional success. She does this by giving them practical tools and strategies that they can use daily. She gives them more than just food to eat but she teaches them how to fish for their food and grow their food which will help them sustain themselves in the future. This is how you change lives and this is what she does. I support her nomination.

Dr. Manuel has been a LifeChanger for more than 40 years throughout her personal and professional career at the Los Angeles Unified School District in her various position. Her lifework and commitment to better the lives of our youth has made positive contributions in our society. In 2015, while attending the Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Student Advisory Council with my wife, Lourdes and daughter, Mikala, Dr. Manuel introduced herself to my family and made us feel comfortable at event. During our conservation, she realized that we had the same passion of helping our underrepresented youth, so she invited me to participate in a newly organized committee she was developing that is called the “Gathering” which is short for the Gathering of Great Minds. The Gathering is growing group of minority men leaders from various organization and professions that are collaborating through Dr, Manuel to improve the life outcome of young men of color. At our meetings, she provided us with current data, informative speakers, articles, etc. to discuss and analyze to develop action plans. Using her established leadership and relationship skills, Dr, Manuel has been chaperoning a diverse group of leaders to share their best practices, to support each other’s work, to increase each other’s capacities and collaborate with each other to improve our community. This past February, we held our 3rd Annual Young Men of Color Conference the young men to attend various informative and empowerment workshops along with being inspired by a diverse group of speakers. All the young men were greeted at the event by men who experienced a bonding moment with the student when teaching them how to tie the Half Windsor Tie Knot with the donated Bloomingdales’ ties. Dr. Manuel is a Super LifeChanger because she is actively leading many other committees and organizations to empower and improve the life outcome of our future leaders. I don’t know where she find the time and energy but it is making a difference in our society. My daughter has been fortunate to have Dr, Manuel as mentor during her tenure as a LAUSD Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC) Board Member for the past three years. Working with Dr. Manuel my daughter has learned how to properly represent her student body, analyze data, improve her communication and leadership skills. Of course, the SSAC is another important committee that was the brain child of Dr, Manuel. My family has had the privilege of knowing Dr. Manuel. In a short time period we have been able to build a strong relationship and make some valuable accomplishment. Through Dr. Manuel I have been able to accomplish some personal goal in a shorter time period and improve the lives of other. She is committed to being a LifeChanger using her leadership, experience and social skills to improve the outcome of the underrepresented student body

Dr. Brenda Manuel has been a great inspiration to me for many years. She is a great motivator and always seeks to bring out the good that is already in you to make you the best person you can be,and then she challenges you to do better. I first met Dr. Manuel as a junior at Westchester High School. She had a no nonsense attitude and called you out if you were not doing what you were supposed to be doing or if you were not where you were supposed to have been, but there was also a loving and nurturing side to her. If you had a problem Dr. Manuel would sit down and listen to your problem, but empower you to make the best decision for yourself. I recall having to make the tough decision of which college to apply to. I really wanted to go to UC Berkeley but the recruiting representative made my chances of acceptance seem grim. Dr. Manuel encouraged me to apply anyway and helped me to see all the reasons why I was a good candidate. This enabled me to write several outstanding college essays. I was accepted to UC Berkeley, but decided to attend a different university. I don't think I would have had the courage to apply had Dr. Manuel not only saw but brought out the best in me. It would be many years later that I would cross paths with Dr. Manuel, but this time it was on a personal level. Dr. Manuel became a member of the church I attended. It did not take my pastor long to recognize what a great motivational speaker she was. He tasked her with motivating the congregation to prepare for growth. Dr. Manuel encouraged us to grow personally first and then apply it to our spiritual lives and pay it forward. She shared her many life experiences with us and how she never let what people thought of her stop her from achieving her goals. She motivated me to find that thing about myself that sets me apart from the crowd and to develop it continuously. For me that thing that set me apart was my leadership skills. She explained that there are many types of leaders but individually we can develop ourselves to be unique leaders. I decided that I would apply this to my career. I took on the task of leading a major project for my agency. This took a lot of courage for me because I had never led a project before. One thing that I do remember Dr. Manuel saying is that the only thing you can control is yourself and as long as you have an open mind and are willing to listen and learn you have already become a great leader. This advice proved to be useful. I built a great rapport with internal and external management and I am slated to lead another project. Recently Dr. Manuel spoke to the chapter of my beloved sorority. She was the "start the year off right" speaker. She motivated us to expand our horizons and to learn to interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds and to the be the type of person our chapter could use to make a difference in our community. After hearing the speech, several members of my chapters have come up with creative service projects and have stepped outside of their comfort zones to do some amazing things for the City of Compton. It is an honor to write on behalf of a very deserving woman who is definitely a life changer!!! Congrats on your nomination.

The student voice can contribute valuable insight and bring positive change to any classroom, school, and school district. Dr. Manuel has nurtured the student voice and created a vehicle, via the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council, through which it can be heard and valued in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Each month students representing various communities in the LAUSD gather at its headquarters to discuss pressing issues that impact student learning, school safety, college and career readiness and much more. Student recommendations are made directly to the superintendent and her immediate cabinet for consideration and adoption. Thanks to Dr. Manuel's mentoring, support and encouragement, students have made their voices heard, and have undertaken steps to empower other students to take a more active role in their education. As a champion of the student voice, Dr. Manuel has made a tremendous impact in education, especially for minority students of color. I am grateful for her advocacy, work, commitment and perseverance. Dr. Manuel is creating a legacy of leadership among students, and absolutely deserves this prestigious award.

Dr. Manuel has changed the lives of many students at Middle College High School.; she is relentless when it comes to providing students with opportunities to grow intellectually, emotionally and socially. Through the Men of Color workshops, Women's Leadership Conferences, and countless field trips, our students have had the opportunity to grow, to learn and to believe in themselves. MCHS students have participated in an array of activities from STEM/STEAM , golf/ sports, motivational lectures, to college visits. One such experience Dr. Manuel provided is when six of our girls were able to appear on the LAUSD television show to talk about their experience at MCHS. This is an experience they will never forget. Dr. Manuel is dedicated to helping and motivating all youth. She gives up her time daily, weekends and late hours to organize , support and facilitate activities for students. Over the five years that I have been blessed to work with her, she has mentored and supported hundreds of students at MCHS and across the District. Finally, Dr. Manuel has served as a mentor for me. She is tireless, optimistic and resourceful- moreover she is always poised and graceful and an awesome role model for anyone she comes in contact with. Her personality is such that she can dance with teenagers and debate with intellectuals. She is singleminded when it comes to supporting youth and all educators. She is so deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award.

As the current two term president of Ladies for Ethnic Advancement and Dignity (LEAD), of which I am a member, Dr. Manuel exhibits strong leadership, support and guidance to the 6th - 12th grade students we mentor. Our non-profit program encourages academic excellence and community involvement to all students and Dr. Manuel helps to lay down the foundation for them to be able to enter the college of their choice and excel in their college studies. To me, Dr. Manuel's passion is motivating students to achieve their highest goals, and she utilizes all of her talents and resources to make that happen.

There are not many people I know more deserving than Dr. Brenda Manuel. A life-long educator, her passion and belief in the power and brilliance of students continues to inspire me. I'm struck with how her latest position has created the space to empower all of LAUSD's 600,000 students by elevating student voice and making sure that students have a seat at the table. She has given every position she has had her all and fights the good fight for students and families.. Whether she's advocating in Sacramento or working in South Los Angeles, you can bet she's making an impact. The famous civil rights icon Bayard Rustin once said " We need in every community a group of angelic troublemakers". Dr. Manuel exemplifies this spirit, working within the education system to ensure that it lives up to its purpose to educate all students equitably. THANK YOU DR. MANUEL FOR YOUR PUBLIC SERVICE. You are certainly a life changer.

Congratulations on being nominated for the 2017-2018 Life Changer of the Year Award. I count it a joy to have attended LEAD (Ladies for Ethic Advancement & Dignity, Inc.) luncheon. As the preeminent speaker, you readily caught my attention as you so eloquently gave college bound students the gift of feeling valued and accepted. You empowered them to grow and flourish in the world of work. What an outstanding message. Thanks for being the educational visionary that you are. You visited my science, math tutorial center and suggested that I make a change after 30 plus years. Your words, "Do you want your students to be globally competitive and bilingual?" Consider Spanish. Thank you Dr. Brenda. Next school year I will make the change and tutor Spanish to children and adults. Dr. Brenda Manuel has a respect for humanity. I find her not only wise, but she imparts knowledge and wisdom, kindling enthusiasm to everyone.

Thoughts I will express are from my relationship with Dr. Manuel on a personal level. Dr. Manuel and I attended George Washington Prep High School which is where she graduated and her career journey began. ?Dr. Manuel has always expressed, as well as exhibited, a passion to help others and has made many sacrifices to fulfill her passion. No matter what life challenges she has endured, she has overcome them and continued on her path to pursue her passion. She puts forth her best to motivate others to guide them in a positive direction. In turn, others motivate Dr. Manuel. Her knowledge and wisdom (good or bad) is shared in a way which her voice is heard and respected. She shares with others how to attain their passion, how to be successful, and how to remain successful moving forward in their life journey. Her professional demeanor, moral character, wisdom, and openness draws others to her not because of her professional title but because she is the genuine Dr. Manuel. She has been on this long journey and recognition as LifeChanger is another destination but not the end of her journey. Dr. Manuel is well deserving of her next destination, LifeChanger of the Year.

There is no better definition of Dr. Brenda Manuel than "lifechanger". There are many lifechangers who simply change others' lives. Yet Dr. Brenda Manuel takes it a step further, and changes lives in a way where those affected by her mentorship are inspired to also become lifechangers. Her efforts inspire a chain-reaction of good. While it is most seen inside the Los Angeles Unified School District, it is unquantifiable the change she has inspired outside the district, after students graduate. We can not track how many students became successful due to the Young Men of Color and PowerHer Up conferences. We can not track how the Village Movement inspired students to become whatever they decide to become. What we can track, though, are Dr. Manuel's countless dedicated and hard-working efforts to change the lives of everyone she meets. She, without a doubt, deserves this nomination and its award. Dr. Manuel, Congratulations on your nomination as Life Changer of the Year. I want to say thank you especially for the special work you do in our community with a focus on young African-American males encouraging them to strive for academic excellence. When I think about how I became interested in my own educational pursuits, I remember it was my second grade teacher who motivated me in that direction. It was her encouragement that made me believe that even I was capable of learning. You remind me of her in your efforts to inspire and motivate our boys to do their very best in school. So...please allow me to thank you in behalf of all African-American males for the labor of love you put forth daily in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Dr. Manual, an educator who is most deserving of such a nomination. I have known Dr. Manuel to be a woman of integrity and very truthful, a Christian who practices her Christianity in all aspects of her life. When it comes to education, apparently Brenda sings “nothing is going to stop me now “; for she continued to prepare herself to motivate youngest through her education and love for others. My grand daughter attends WPAC school where Dr. Manuel is a board member. She gets a high rating from her board peers. Good luck! Essie M Jeffries

I met Dr. Manuel during the Council of Great City Schools event in Long Beach California in October of 2014. That is where my colleague (Bruce Douglas, II) and I met her and learned of her great work in Student Empowerment. We were personally and professionally gratified that she accepted our invitation to speak to our My Brother's Keeper Forum attendees. Her presentation was innovative and inspirational to many. Many know of her work that has forever impacted the lives of many students in her community. We also know that her ideas and encouragement to other district leaders across that nation have led to the creation of other school district and community programs that successfully serve the My Brother's Keeper nation of students. We are proud to know you Brenda!

Dr. Brenda Manuel is an asset, mentor and leader in the Los Angeles Community as well as an advocate for African American youth. Her contributions to the Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher, principal and advocate for underserved populations are extraordinary. I have witnessed her passion for raising student achievement and observed her efforts to listen to students' voices in their school communities. Specifically, she leads the Young Men/Women of Color Conferences, where she touches the lives of over 100o Latino and African American high school students. My nephew attended the Young Men of Color conference in 2015 and was personally inspired by her to excel in Advanced Placement classes and propel his career in sports medicine. When he told me how instrumental Dr. Manuel was in his high school achievement, I was so proud of her for being an inspiration and touching his life in such a way that he has been selected to speak to other youth about how they too can encourage other young men of color to aspire to greatness beyond college and career readiness! Thank you Dr. Manuel!

To be a life changer would mean that you have changed lives and your influence on them has manifested into who they are. That is indeed true of Dr.Manuel, as she has been instrumental in my development, growth, and career objectives. One way that she has been a life changer for me, is my auntie Brenda personally took over guardianship of me in junior high school and sought to arrange for my life's path to be redirected. As a youth growing up in the concrete jungle of South Central Los Angeles, I was an at-risk youth growing up in an environment saturated with gangs, drugs, and violence. With a mother addicted to drugs, and no father in the home, my demise was imminent, and my aunt was determined not to allow me to become a statistic! Without reservation, my aunt arranged for me to reside with her, despite her demanding work schedule, ongoing projects, staff meetings, and other obligations. She worked tirelessely, and even sacrificed much of her social life to live as an example of integrity. I can safely say that without having Brenda A. Manuel as my aunt, I would be dead or in jail. I was like a nice piece of art at a rundown thrift store, that was salvaged, restored, and taken to a place unimaginable. She took me and molded me and led by example. Her drive and determination, led me as I graduated high school and went on to graduate at Clark Atlanta University. Her example of humility and sacrifice, is why I am involved with youth organizations mentoring, and why I have partnered with local police stations to do communiy clean-up projects. Her example of hard work, is why I am a certifed CIF referee in three sports, working year-round modeling teamwork and sportsmanship througout the Southbay, greater Los Angeles area, and in various counties. I attribute my desire for learning and mastering a skill to my aunt, because I was able to watch her continue to strive for greatness year after year. If I was to nominate anyone in the entire state of California, for "LifeChanger of the Year", Dr. Brenda A. Manuel, would be a first ballot vote for me hands down! I judge someone's character, by who they are when the lights are dim and no one is around. I can assure you that my aunt is the same sophosticated, savvy, kind, compassionate, intuitive, uplifting, and caring individual, when no one is around and has the same majestic spirit! There is no question that Brenda Manuel is a lifechanger, because she changed mine! Sincerely, Hendrick Johnson

Brenda has a vision and unwavering determination to insure that students of color living in the Los Angeles inner city, receive fair and challenging educational opportunities and exposure to positive and successful role models. Through her many student empowerment programs and leadership conferences, she is directing middle and high school students to look beyond their limited environments and set goals to pursue higher learning and careers that most believe are not within their reach. Students I (a retireed teacher and workshop leader) personally know who participate in her programs comment how much they enjoy interacting with professionals and receiving information associated with different careers and businesses. They appreciate the importance of teamwork while collaborating with students from other schools during workshops. There are fun and challenging activities throughout the day that help to build confidence and self-esteem. The rousing, uplifting celebratory awards program at the end of the event where students are recognized for their achievements of the day is always a high point ! Everybody wins!! What an amazing community Builder also. Over 25 years of my life Ive watched her sacrifice so that others can have. Some of us are just blessed with visions for impacting the world for good. Few receive the vision and act upon it. Dr. Brenda Manuel is one of the latter. I have not known of an educator who thought singularly about students; not how well they were teaching, or how well they ran a school, but removed themselves completely and thought, "What do our students need that they simply are not getting?" Well, it came to her in one word: empowerment. Students need to feel and be empowered to speak when they see injustices, to change situations that have gone awry, and influence people who can assist them with change. She went about the business of ensuring this could happen for students. Her program has gone viral and national. Students are gaining skills in areas they never thought possible. God bless Dr. Manual for her work, and may it continue for many generations.

Being a part of the Superintendent's Student Advisory council, I learned that there are there are a few people who will truly hear and take a student's voice into consideration, Dr. Manuel is one of these few people. She allows students to speak freely and with confidence about the school system and what improvements can be made. Most importantly, the message that she always gets across is that you can create change if you stand up for what you believe in and do so with confidence. She believes that every student has the power to succeed but does her best to make it a reality for them. Within the Advisory Council, Dr. Manuel assures students that all their thoughts will be heard and all their questions answered. Even if she couldn't provide the answer herself, she would find people in the district who could. Her dedication and determination has motivated me to be the best I can be, and to always give back to my community the same way she that. Thank you Dr. Manuel.

I met Doctor Manuel (Doctor B), at a very progressive, inspiring and "Focused" group of black men called Great Minds. She put together the group of men because she saw the need for sincere commitment of black men in our black communities. Her studies had shown that where a black man is present in a family, a community - in society, that our young black men, high schoolers especially would perform better academically and in our communities. Doctor Manuel was methodical in creating the Great Minds group. She shared data and analyses and insight and experience at regular meetings that never lost focus or intent or drive. Doctor Manuel realized that her leadership of this group of "community power men" could be difficult for any number of reasons but she never faltered. Doctor Manuel brought the right amount of coaching, the right amount of encouragement, the right amount of care. She showed both nurturing and leadership skills as she, a woman, guided a group of black men to become a cohesive "focused" force in helping to guide the lives of our young black men. Any number of challenges within and outside of the group could have derailed our efforts, but because one woman of great insight and intellect saw fit to "guide from beside", to coach and lead and inspire, and hold accountable, our group progressed and grew and became ever more influential in our community of high school young men of color. We have now put on our third or forth Young Men of Color conference - each year bigger than the year before. This past February included close to if not over 300 young High School men from so-called at risk, urban schools. These young men gather on a Saturday morning probably rising a 6AM to come to learn about important life skills like Financial Literacy and How To Interact with Police, and How to Treat Women and many, many more subjects-- but just as importantly, thanks to Doctor B, they come with a chance to interact with black men who care. Doctor Manuel's program, structured in the sound old tradition of hands-on care, is a tremendous success because she has unlocked the power of community engagement at a very critical stage in the growth of our young black and brown men. She has strength not just in leadership, but in coaching and nurturing and logistics and in leading from the background - a very difficult skill. I have had the privilege of knowing Doctor Manuel through this program and through the launch of the Aspen Challenge and have seen her at work in other LAUSD programs that are after the last school bell. She is clearly committed and has been a gracious, caring and exemplary leader to follow. It continues to be a pleasure working with her.

Dr. Brenda Manuel's name in every area of her work is synonymous with the phrase "Life Changer." With every breath she looks to make great changes in the lives of others. She intentionally and strategically looks at the overview of all that she assigns her time to in an effort to make sure that all is considered and so therefore all is successful building solid foundations and not just great ideas. I have had the pleasure of working with her for years now and have witnessed first hand the work and immediate affect she has had empowering children, parents and community members to do better. She doesn't just use the phrase it takes a village in her work but she designs, structures and helps to build the foundation and lifeline of the village to make sure that it is sustainable. She has created a legacy to live on in her community and a model for others to follow.

I am a teacher at Lincoln High School, Stockton and advisor for the BSU. I recently met Dr.Manuel at CSU Fresno as she facilitated the Black Minds Matter competition between my team of Black Warriors and 5 other teams. Prior to attending the competition, Dr Manuel had conference calls with me and other advisors in preparation for this event. Dr. Manuel was skillful in establishing the structure and providing guidance to me and other advisor such that we could prepare our students for this competition. As a results of my conversations with Dr. Manuel, I was able to help my students take on a major project at our High school regarding the high suspension of African American students compared to whites. I'm so inspired by her ability to put this in motion through me, my students, onto our Middle school and other schools in the surrounding schools and districts in the Stockton area. I'm doubly inspired after reading her story of the many things she has done and is doing to give back the voice and power our African American students need if they are to succeed in their rapidly change environment and world. I salute Dr. Manuel for she is truly an American Heroine.

I have known Dr. Manuel for over 20 years as a professional and personally. Since meeting Dr. Manuel, her passion for students has led her into school and district leadership. From what I understand, the concept of a Student Empowerment Unit was brought to fruition by her ability to see education as a partnership between parents, students, community and educators. It is through Dr. Manuel's work that I, an educator who works in a school district approximately 77 miles away am able to empower students and staff here in the Oxnard Union High School District. Dr. Manuel is not selfish with her knowledge and creativity, but has advised and extended invitations to our students and staff to attend her empowering events. Dr. Manuel has not only touched and changed the lives of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, but her influence is changing lives in the Oxnard Union High School District. It is because of this that I fully endorse Dr. Manuel to be awarded the "Life Changer of the Year award. I am open and available to share my testimony on how the work of Dr. Manuel has changed my life and the lives of students beyond the Los Angeles Unified School District.

You really cannot put into perspective the life of Dr. Brenda Manuel, unless you witness her impact on students and the people around her. Each of us can point to a person who had an enormous impact on our lives and forever changed our trajectory (toward the positive). Dr. Manuel, is one of those selfless human beings who constantly sacrifices for the benefit and well-being of others. You would have to see the tears streaming down the cheeks of a group of young ladies as they collectively try to express their gratitude to her, for putting together a conference that changed their lives. Or, watch from a distance as someone who is in need, tries to thank her for helping them through a challenging crisis. Or watch her go to battle for those less fortunate and place her position on the line in the name of "Doing the right thing." She could have retired years ago and walked off into the sunset, pension in hand, enjoying her retirement - instead she shows up day-in and day-out, still engaged in the struggle to touch one more life, and help those who need us most. Many may be nominated but few can hold a candle to this giant of a person. She epitomizes the title of, Life Changer, because for more than 40 years, that's exactly what she has done.
