I have had the opportunity to work closely with Tara for 3 years now at Heard Elementary School. There are not enough positive things you could say about Tara and the job she does here for the students of Heard Elementary. For me personally, I can say that Tara is more than just a colleague, she is a great friend and I couldn’t be more thankful for what she has done for me and taught me while working with her. When you talk about someone being a life changer, that is just what Tara is! She works tirelessly to make sure she is giving her students the best education possible, as well as teaching them to be independent despite their disabilities. She recognizes each student’s disabilities and teaches to needs of each student. If you were to look at her lesson plans, you would see she has them broken down for each student to best fit their personal needs. Tara also has high expectations for her students, her assistants, and herself and she will not let anyone or anything get in the way of her or her students meeting those expectations. Often times in a classroom like Tara’s, you never see those students out of the classroom much, but not her students. Her students are out and about in the school going to other classrooms for segments, attending exploratories (PE, Music, Art, Technology) on their own, helping out the counselor, being active in Special Olympics and in the community and this is all because of the dedication and hard work she puts into her students. One specific example that shows what a life changer Tara Young is from one of our snow days this year – She knew that I came down to Heard and she wanted to know how the roads were because she knew some of her students may need some food. The roads were not great traveling conditions especially the back roads, but that didn’t stop her. She loaded up her van and delivered food to some her students who were in need. You’re not going to find many people in this world that would do a deed like that. This is just one of the many unnoticed acts of kindness that Tara has done since I have known her. With all of that being said, Tara does not want any recognition for anything and would much rather her students be the center of something special rather than her being recognized for anything. Tara, thank you for all that you do for our students, our school, and myself! You have not only changed the lives of students here in Heard County, but you have also changed the lives of other adults and I thank you for that!

I was very blessed to work eight years with Mrs. Tara Young at Heard County Elementary school.  Tara understands the responsibility that comes with ensuring that every child has the opportunity to receive a high quality education.  To provide that opportunity Tara always made sure that she had the necessary tools to provide a successful classroom setting.  Tara understands that every child has a different learning style and pace.  She realizes that every child is unique and capable of learning.  She teaches in ways that will dramatically change the outcome of the child’s success. She understands the best part of teaching is that it matters!  Tara is an advocate for each child and believes that “we should teach the way a child learns best.”  Tara is a life changer in each student that she has the good fortune to teach or help.

Tara is an amazing special needs teacher in our school system. I am absolutely blessed to have her as a close colleague on our special education team. As a co-worker, she is always willing to help others. As a teacher, she works with some of the most challenging students and maintains high expectations from them both academically and behaviorally. She works tirelessly to make sure each student has what they need to experience success in the school environment. Tara involves her students in the regular education environment as much as possible, and she also works with Special Olympics so that her students are able to actively particpate in athletics/sports. She truly looks beyond a child's disability and sees all the ability/potential that is in every student!

Tara is an amazing teacher. She consistently goes beyond her duties as a teacher to make sure that her students have everything they need. She is dedicated to her job and loves her students like they are her own. She makes a point to get to know each student's personality so that she can talk about their interests with them and knows what's going on in their life. June Barber Posted over a year ago

I am so excited to see this nomination. I have been an educator for 30 years and she shines far above all others in her love/compassion for "her kids". She consistently/daily goes above and beyond what a teacher is "required to do". She works with special needs children but she motivates and encourages them to reach beyond what they could ever imagine they could do or achieve. I love going into her classroom and just observing...she is truly amazing!!!!

Tina Holcomb Posted over a year ago

Tara is not only an amazing teacher but an amazing person. She goes way beyond her duties as a teacher for her students. She is a special needs teacher that see abilities and not disabilities. She believes everyone of her students can learn and be successful. My daughter has been a student of Tara’s for four years now. She has achieved so much because of Tara’s determination. If all special needs teachers saw each child's ability and would fight for them, then we would live in a much better world.
