Support Lisa

Lisa Hernandez was nominated by library director Nora Galvan.

Mrs. Hernandez recently received the 2018 Outstanding Service in Library Instruction Award for the Texas Library Association Library Instruction Round Table. The project submitted by Mrs. Hernandez is an ePortfolio that has helped the College, Career and Technology Academy (CCTA) campus students. This ePortfolio program is presented to students who have dropped out of school. It simplifies the method of doing a research project for students at this particular Special Purpose high school.

Pharr San Juan Alamo ISD has a public drive of going from house to house to recruit drop out students and bring them back to receive their high school diplomas, and perhaps even an Associates Degree. The drive is called Count Down to Zero.

CCTA services the Drop-Out Recovery students, where Mrs. Hernandez is the librarian. She helps students develop well-organized research projects using her unique, helpful teaching style. Students use this outline to complete and develop their research papers at the college and university levels.

"Mrs. Hernandez has shared this program with coast to coast college and university libraries in over 13 states through videoconferences and teleconferences," Galvan said. "She has also presented this program to Texas library directors, university professors and coordinators at the Texas Association of School Library Administrators Workshop (TASLA); as well as the Texas Library Association (TLA) District 4 Conference at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Library. At the TLA District 4 Conference, she presented to academic, public and school librarians."

In 2016, Mrs. Hernandez received a book grant from The Molina Foundation, a national non-profit organization. With the help of a South Texas College librarian, they filled an entire vehicle full of books for students at CCTA. Books were placed on tables in the library, and students were able to make their book selection.

"What a wonderful sight to see the joy on students' faces as they made their book selection," Galvan said. "Mrs. Hernandez earned the 2015 Librarian of the Year Award from the Texas Library Association. Without a doubt, Mrs. Hernandez merited that wonderful award at the state level."

In 2013, Mrs. Hernandez was selected to attend the University of Texas Libraries Information Literacy Summit. She was one of ten high school librarians chosen in the state of Texas. At this summit, high school librarians merged minds to develop and research school and academic connections for success. The same year, Mrs. Hernandez was honored by the PSJA Education Foundation and was gifted a grant to fund the “Young Adult Books on Call,” project.

"Mrs. Hernandez educates and develops insightful patrons at the district, state, national, and community levels," Galvan said. "We are beyond impressed with her accomplishments."

I have known Lisa for 10 years. I have been amazed at her dedication to helping students other people have given up on. She knows the value of education which is based on a foundation of literacy. Lisa has developed several programs--like the children's book reading selections and her great portfolio project--that help students develop the literacy skills and confidence they need to succeed. Lisa consistently invests her heart, her time, and her own money to let kids know she believes in them. She is phenomenal! We need more people like Lisa! :-)

Nora galvan Posted 7 months ago

Lisa is awesome, she helps students who, after dropping out of school, they come back and Lisa picks up where they left off. These students graduate from both high school and college. Many of these students are parents and work late nights to support their family. Isn't that what educators do?

Tomas Reyna Posted 7 months ago

Monica Alcala Posted 8 months ago

I had the honor of meeting Lisa Hernandez recently as she served as one of my mentors prior to the completion of my graduate program to become a librarian. Mrs. Hernandez was very helpful and it soon became evident why she had been nominated for such a prestigious honor. Mrs. Hernandez works with a non-traditional population of students who have dropped out of high school but have decided to come back as adults to obtain their high school diploma. Her job is a very important one because she serves a population who is about to go out into the “real world” but who also need a great amount of guidance and confidence. Mrs. Hernandez ensures to make a positive impact on these students and in their lives by always being available to them and assisting them with any question they may have, regardless of whether it has to do with the library or not. I have no doubt that her students have come to really make use of her expertise and guidance. She takes part in different activities throughout the campus and serves her students as much more than a librarian. Although she wears many hats, her ultimate goal is to help her students achieve success in life and to give them the confidence to go out and make something wonderful of themselves. Her positive attitude and willingness to help permeates throughout her library, and it is evident that she is heavily motivated by her student’s achievements and success. Being selected as a LifeChanger would be warranted for someone as aspiring and commendable as Mrs. Hernandez, and if selected, she will do even more wonders for her students!

When someone asks you to think of someone kind, you think of one person. When they ask to think of someone who is noble, you think of another. When they ask you think of someone who is an inspiration, of course you think of someone else. It is very rare to find all these qualities in one person but you do with Lisa and that’s what makes her a Life Changer.
