Of all the memories I have of elementary school, the memories of science with Mrs. Reierson are some of the most vivid! She taught me to be curious, to ask questions and to find joy in the little things, like discovering mysterious substances!! I was always so excited to go to science to continue discovering new things! She made learning fun and for that I’m so grateful!

I am the editor at the Herald in Postville. I had an opportunity to visit with Carol about this honor as we prepare to feature her in our next issue of the paper. She was very humble but yet so enthusiastic about her profession. My son was fortunate to have Carol as a teacher when she was working in Postville. Her enthusiasm was, and I am sure, continues to be contagious. My husband is a retired Postville High School teacher and he remembers her as an enthusiastic and dedicated student who loved to learn. It is obvious she continues to instill these traits in her students. She is very deserving of this honor and true LifeChanger. Congrats Carol.

I have not worked with Carol but have the privilege of knowing her as a good friend for over 35 years. I am not surprised that she was nominated. Not only is she very busy with her career, she is involved helping her friends whenever needed. She is on the phone during difficult and trying times offering much needed support. When my father in law was on hospice Carol and her husband Jeff found time to bring our family supper and companionship. When he died they stayed with our grandkids so our kids could be with their grandpa. She would be a great model for future life changer nominees.

Carol Reierson has touched our lives here in Elgin in so many ways. As a library director and a mother, I have been a witness to her dedication, intelligence, and community spirit. Not only has Carol shown my own daughters how fun and wonderful science is in her middle school classes, but she continues to show all the kids in our community through volunteerism at the library. Carol has done several programs at our summer reading program, and they are always among the best in terms of fun and learning. You can check out the Elgin Public Library Facebook page to see evidence of her enthusiasm in helping kids with their experimental rocket launches this past year. She has a wonderful rapport with students, and her love of her subject matter shines through. She is so deserving of this award.

Bill Crandall Posted over a year ago

Over the past 4 years it has been both an honor and a pleasure to watch Carol have such a positive effect on so many young lives she touches each day. Each day starts with enthusiasm and creativity that is infectious in the classroom culture Carol helps foster. The innovation in both the teaching and learning that goes on in Carol's classrooms has been recognized by peers, administrators, former students and science education researchers. The University of Iowa Center for Teaching and Learning has brought pre-service teacher candidates to Carol's classroom to observe her way of motivating kids to be involved in their own learning by being asked to take risks in making claims about what they think about the topic at hand. Carol is always open to new ideas that will help foster learning in her students and improve ways she can help her students connect the concepts they are asked to attend to. In short Carol has accepted the challenge of making learning fun in her classes,by making herself a teacher / learner along with her students.

Mrs. Reirson is the type of teacher you can always count on to put a smile on your face or to give you a good laugh. Everyone here at NFV Middle School is super lucky to have her as a teacher. She really made me enjoy science so much more! I always found science as a challenging subject but with Mrs. Reirson she makes it FUN and she also will help with any situation you are having trouble with. She defiantly is a role model not just to me but many others as well. If anyone at all deserves this award it would most defiantly go to Mrs. Reirson. She makes students look forward to coming to school.

Mrs. Reirson is the best teacher anyone could have. We are all lucky to have her as a teacher! She makes all of us smile and enjoy science. You never see her mad she is always so happy to be teaching us about science! Mrs. Reirson makes all of the experiments we do fun. She is the reason I love going to science class so much! She makes class fun but she also makes sure we always get the work done. There is never a time in science that I am so frustrated that I just want to give up because Mrs. Reirson always helps me understand what I didn't understand. She has been an amazing role model to me. She has shown me that you can have fun in class while getting work done. She has also shown me how important it is to be kind and respect others.

I have known Carol for many years. She has what I like to call "the gift". The gift to bring her talent of teaching and motivating the students. Every person who enters her room gets her special attention. Carol LOVES what she does and it shows by the results of her students. My daughter would love to become a teacher as great as her. She a wonderful role model.

Mrs. Reierson is by far my most favorite science teacher. She was my 6th grade teacher and now she is my 8th grage science teacher. She always has fun things to do for class, but at the same time she let's us get our work done. She also has a very positive attitude everyday that makes everyone smile in the room when we walk in. She also includes jokes in our work to make it seem more fun! She has been my life changer on making science seem a lot more fun than boring. Good Luck Mrs. Reierson you deserve it.

Mrs.Reierson has been such a huge role model in my life even if she hasn't realized it. It's not just her lessons in class, but her attitude that has impacted me forever. Her fun lively spirit is always so welcoming when you walked into her classroom for everyone's favorite period of the day. Science.

Ms. Reierson to me has always been a teacher that I know has a sense of humor that isn't their just to teach but also to have fun and learn on the way. Then again she also takes safety very seriously if you aren't fallowing the safety precautions for anything she will warn you and if you still don't correct yourself you won't do the activity. So Ms. Reierson has been someone that I could look up to al throuought science, and if you have questions about another subject than she will answer it to the best of her ability, but if she can't answer your question then she'll point you to someone that can.

Mrs. Reierson defiantly deserves this award, she is the best science teacher actually the best teacher I ever had. I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up and I’m in 8th grade so I better get going on that, but it was Mrs. Reierson who helped me realize that I wanted to be a teacher. She showed me that yes it can be hard, but how much fun and how exciting it is to be a teacher. I just want to say Thank You Mrs. Reierson for everything you’ve done for me and for everyone, you really do deserve this award!

I've only known Carol for a few short months. But in this time I've seen students and coworkers come and go from her room, lending advice, encouragement, and help after school. She spends countless hours finishing up this day, getting ready for the next day. I can only imagine, the effort she puts forth in her classroom! And as she leaves for the day, I notice she's always smiling!!! She carries such a positive caring attitude, you can't help but smile too!! Good Luck Carol, you have earned it!!

I am proud to say I was Elementary Principal when Carol Reierson joined the Valley Staff. Carol's positive attitude and amazing talent was obvious to all. Mrs. Reierson always did what was best for her students! I would describe Mrs. Reierson as challenging (high expectations for all students), yet nurturing, knowledgeable, skillful, collaborative and highly professional. Such a tremendous role model! With Mrs. Reierson it is all about relationships. The teacher that is an administrator's dream. The teacher every student looked forward to having one day. The teacher every parent loved and trusted. The teacher-leader that all staff appreciated. Carol Reierson is a Master-Teacher and so much more! I feel so fortunate to have worked with her. Every community needs a Carol Reierson!

Mala Erickson Posted over a year ago

I have been working as a substitute teacher at North Fayette Valley Middle School and Valley Elementary for about 3 years. When I first started, I spent some time in Mrs. Reierson's science classroom observing and could immediately feel the energy and enthusiasm for science that she instilled in her students. I hear from current and former students of hers how much they enjoyed their time with her and can certainly understand why she is a favorite. My son loved it when the 'big kids' came down to first grade to teach them how to tie their shoes and the rapport Mrs. Reierson had with all ages of learners was apparent. Thank you Mrs. Reierson for your endless enthusiasm and the gifts you share with your students, your colleagues, and the whole community!

Mrs. Reierson is the reason I am a teacher today. Her passion for the profession and not only her students but everyone in the school is unmatched. Seeing her enjoy herself at "work" everyday made me see how amazing being a teacher could be. Currently I teach 7-12 choir in a small town school in Iowa and I hope to be even half as good of a teacher as Mrs. Reierson is. No one deserves this honor more than her!!

Where do I start with Carol? First and foremost, the energy she brings to every school day, training, staff meeting, or informal meeting is amazing. With her smile and laugh, she's able to turn the mood of a group around in a heartbeat. There are rare souls who have this ability, and I'm truly honored to work with one of the. Second, the deep caring for her profession, the way she cares for her students is inspiring. The most difficult student feels that sense of caring and safety in her room. Students will comment that the work is hard, the bar is held high, but in the end, Carol is fair, and that's what they love about her. As a teacher in the building, she one that leads by example, pushing herself to do better each day. And on those days where things don't go right, she's back at it early the next day ready to make it happen. And finally, both of my daughters have had Carol as a teacher, and both have felt that caring in her classroom. They seen first hand how excited she is when students make connections, make discoveries and connect the dots. I've taught with Carol for 18 years, and in that time, she's grown from a college to a friend, one that I trust to give me the answers that I need when I question myself. All in all, Carol's incredible energy, her talents and skill in the science classroom, her professionalism she brings, and her caring nature for students and staff alike make her such a positive force in our district and our 8th grade team.

Carol Reierson was a LIFE CHANGER for my son. When he came to her in 5th grade, he was reading at a 2nd grade level. She didn't quit until she found a way to reach him! I was also one of the lucky ones who got to be a teaching partner with Carol for a couple of maternity leaves, her love, guidance, and love of children and their learning was awe inspiring.

Carol has such a love for what she does, and it constantly shows in her classroom. Not only does it show in her own classroom, she brings her 8th graders down to my classroom to work with first graders. She gets them all involved in reading, science experiments, and even practices shoe tying with them. This is something she wouldn't have to do, but she takes the time anyway. She is always filled with enthusiasm in everything she does and it is absolutely contagious. I am fortunate to have experienced this enthusiasm as a 5th grade student, as well as a colleague. Not only that, I am proud to call her my mom. In the few years I have been teaching at North Fayette Valley in Valley Elementary, I have had many parents come in and tell me how much they enjoyed having my mom as a teacher. It makes me proud to know that after all these years, passed students, who now have kids of their own, still remember the impact she had on their lives. Every day her passion, drive, and enthusiasm gets students involved and excited to learn. She is very deserving of this nomination and award! Thank you Mom for instilling a love of learning and education in me. I wouldn't be the teacher I am today without your wonderful example!

As I was deciding what kind of path I wanted to take in life I looked to Carol. Did I want to be an educator of any kind? I knew Carol was one of the first teachers at school in the morning and one of the last there at night. I knew that she worked very hard and cared very much about the quality of the time she spent with kids. I also knew that even when she ALWAYS had a smile on her face and a positive attitude, she was exausted by the time she headed home to be with her family. So when I thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I decided it was certainly not in education - I had seen just what hard work and dedication had to go into being the insightful, motivating, creative teacher that she is... I chose another route. And every road I've taken since has led me back to wanting to care for students as much as she does. Every path lets me impart some piece of knowledge I learned from her to someone else. I spend my days searching out those moments that are the ones that keep that smile on her face. The best part is that I know I'm not the only one, not even one of a few, who have been inspired by this incredible educator. Every life she touches comes away better for it, that's what being a Lifechanger is all about!

Carol Reierson puts joy into the classroom. As a teacher of Science she encourages students to explore, question and keep asking why. As a co-worker she encourages staff to love their job, love the students and love life. Carol is lifechanger in her community, with her co-workers and with students of all ages.

There are so many great things to say about Carol. The biggest things that stand out are how much she cares about her students, how positive of a person she is, and that as a student you can tell how much she enjoys teaching and that rubs off on you as a student - I really wanted to learn what she was teaching and make her proud of me. She was among my favorite teachers and has always been a wonderful role model. NFV is fortunate to have her and she deserves this award!

Carol is an amazing combination of traits--creative, innovative, caring, funny, fearless and hands down the most energetic person I have ever had the honor of knowing. If you are a lucky receipient of her energy you know what I mean when I say that her energy is contagious. You can't help but feel like you've just been "Carolized" after spending some time with her--she just has that knack for making things better when she is in the room. She devotes herself to finding a way to connect with her students. She is an inspiration not only to her students, but a fabulous mentor to her fellow teachers. She is loved and adored by her family. She is the definition of a Lifechanger!

Carol is a team player and passionately helps the entire district's educational vision by applying her multiple skills and teaching experiences in the learning process. She stepped up as a special education teacher when needed. She embraced the learning of elementary students, and THEN, it was an explosion of learning when Carol was assigned her "dream job" teaching hands-on science to middle school students! Her enthusiasm and dedication to the learning process is unsurpassed and perfect for middle school students! As her former superintendent, Carol is definitely a Lifechanger! She is MOST deserving of this special recognition and all the praises from colleagues, parents, and students!

Carol was instrumental in getting our son Cody in finding a constructive outlet for his anger. She took the time to get to know him and to help him develop a plan. By the end of 5th grade he was able to control his anger and his grades and attitude improved. She deserves to be recognized for her amazing accomplishments as an educator.

Little did I know that when I began my first teaching position and became partners with Carol Reierson that my education was just beginning. To this day, she has been the model of putting into practice what real teaching is to be. This impact molded me as an educator of elementary, middle school, and college level students. Never was there a day that ceased for learning. Carole models engaged learning from recognizing the needs of her students. She creates a safe and fun environment that not only supports but requires her students to problem solve, question, and reflect. Students are not taught lessons with Mrs. Reierson, they're given experiences that model how to actually be learners. This is what having Mrs. Reierson as a teacher makes the experience life changing.

I know Carol has impacted the lives of countless students over the years. I've heard stories of the things she does to make learning science fun and exciting, like going camping overnight with a group of middle-schoolers.... only someone with endless patience, tons of energy, and dedication to her students could handle that! Carol is well-deserving of the award of Lifechanger of the Year!

Carol is always challenging herself to become a better educator and her work ethic "rubs off" on those around her! My son will be in her class this year and he loves to experiment, I am excited for him and wish I could be in his class. Carol Reierson is, indeed, a life changer!

She had volunteered to be in a pilot group and was very excited about the process. Who gets excited about teacher meetings?! Mrs. Reierson was not only my 5th grade teacher, but my mother. In classes, she always encouraged students to be creative and to think for themselves. She was always there to help you think through questions without "spoon-feeding" you the answers. In 5th grade, we had the most exciting experiments in science, and read the most interesting books. As her daughter, I cannot begin to count the number of people who have approached me and said, "You're Mrs. Reierson's daughter, right? I had her as a teacher twenty years ago! She was the best teacher I ever had!" She's inspired many of her students to become teachers themselves. Her support has been especially apparent in her students love of science. For the last several years, she has taught middle school science. I have heard many of her past students approach her and say something along the lines of "I didn't think I liked science until you taught it!" A trip to the grocery store with my mother is never just a grocery store, because a past student always spots her, runs up to her, gives a big giant hug, and then explains how much he or she misses her as a teacher. In the past decades of teaching, I cannot even begin to imagine how many lives she has touched, or even changed, because of her passion for education.
