Basil Marin was nominated by his friend, Robert Van Sciver.

Throughout his life, Mr. Marin has proven himself to be a LifeChanger to his students, colleagues, family, and friends. Positivity emanates from Mr. Marin in every interaction he has with those around him. He began his educational journey as a one-on-one paraprofessional at an alternative day school in Harrisonburg, VA, earning his MAT during this time. This was just a small step on this journey, as he soon realized his dream of helping future generations of students succeed.

He then transitioned to becoming a full time teacher at South Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs (SECEP) in Chesapeake. SECEP services special needs children in multiple school divisions throughout the greater Hampton Roads metropolitan area. As a teacher leader at SECEP, he was able to influence the lives of more students for the better. He reintegrated several of his students back into the public school setting by establishing positive relationships with them and inspiring them to do better. His skills and positivity were quickly recognized, and he was awarded Teacher of the Year in his third year at SECEP. Moreover, Mr. Marin enrolled in an Ed.S. program while working full time so that he could serve in a bigger capacity as a school administrator.

After seeing how difficult it was for many of the alternative students to make it back into the public school setting, Mr. Marin sought to become an assistant principal at Portsmouth Public Schools, where he would be able to help struggling students before they were expelled to alternative schools. Again, Mr. Marin proved his ability by building positive relationships with students at Churchland High School. He has hosted professional development programs for his staff at Churchland High School and has recently been invited to host professional developments at other school districts throughout Virginia. In 2017, he was selected as one of ASCD’s Emerging Leaders. He has spread his professional message of positive relationship building to educators and administrators across the nation through his platform presentation, “Reaching the Unreachable Student,” at ASCD’s national conferences. In addition, Mr. Marin connects with educational leaders across the country through Twitter outreach programs to spread his message of positive relationship building, and has served as a special guest on multiple education podcasts.

Mr. Marin serves as an excellent role model for his underserved students and leads by example. He is currently enrolled in a PhD program in educational leadership and highlights to his students that as someone who had literacy problems himself, it is within your own power to build yourself higher and push yourself to the next level. With his unprecedented talent, strong personal traits, perfect professional attributes and his genuine desire to help students succeed, Mr. Marin will successfully serve as a positive role model for the next generation of students.

In the words of Paulo Coelho, Mr. Marin is an Alchemist because he “show[s us] that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.” Mr. Marin is the rare kind of brilliant, talented, innovative, and positive school administrator every school district in the nation would dream of recruiting.

I met Basil, by chance, about a year ago at ASCD EMPOWER. In our group conversation, it was immediately evident that he has a power, passion, and plan to positively impact every individual he encounters. And his relationships are genuine and lasting. I am grateful for his words, his questions, his validation, his encouragement - which began at our first meeting and have continued since. Basil Marin is a certainly a Life Changer - worthy of recognition - as with every post, conversation, message, etc. he has served as such to me personally and I have no doubt that thousands would echo my words.

Chad Ricardo Posted 7 months ago

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Basil since he was a young man; some 14,15 years of age. From the moment we shook hands, I knew he had the potential to change lives. Basil worked with me as a volunteer at the Boys and Girls club. He dedicated just about every one of his afternoons and some weekends to the growth and development of the youth in his community. Giving back wasn’t a chore for him, it was his calling. I recall having never met someone with such a zest for life and sense of responsibility at that early an age. For Basil, “being there” for others wasn’t a “job”, it was a Responsibility, and one that he valued and loved. It’s a blessing to see who and what he himself has developed into

Nitahji Alford Posted 7 months ago

Even telling me his struggles, explaining to me how he will fix problems. It made me want to come to school, he made it fun for me while I was learning! i’ve had the ptiledge of working with Basil Marin and can testify ti his ability to inspire trust in children of all ages. He was always a person of great integrity and determination to make the world a better place. As I’ve followed Basils career and education, I’m so impressed that he still possesses those traits. I’ve seen him diffuse confrontations between youth and cool meltdowns almost effortlessly. I admit I was once the one aiming for a meltdown and brought back to earth so to speak, by Basil. It’s like he has an intuitive understanding of when to step in for someone in need of light in a dark place. I know him as honest and focused. I’ve watched as he set personal and professional goals for himself and always meeting those goals. I know him as devoted to good causes and an inspirational fundraiser for those in need. Basil is who I’d want as the captain of a sinking ship on which I was a passenger..

Teyvon G Posted 8 months ago

Mr.Marin is a very outstanding administrator. He's also compassionate when it comes to discipline which is needed nowadays. He gives out consequences accordingly but he gets through to children like no other. He shows them the right way and helps them learn from their mistakes making sure they do not repeat them. He's also talented he helped me before on piano which was unexpected but I learned from it. Overall thats why I think he should be awarded this title.

I’ve known Basil for over 10 years now and his dedication and commitment to the youth had always been part of who he is. Basil is a leader who leads by example and is a natural empowerer. He’s been an inspiration in my life and his reach goes far beyond the kids he mentors; he motivates and inspires the people around him to reach their highest potential. He deserves this nomination and much more.

Basil is one of the most positive and influential individuals that I have met along my journey into leadership. I wish him the best in all his future endeavors!

As a student athlete and National English Honors Society member at Churchland High School, I can honestly say that Mr. Marin has made CHS a wonderful environment to learn and thrive in. He pushes every student and staff member to strive to be the best they can be. Mr. Marin genuinely cares about the success of students inside and outside the classroom. His honest and bold personality has given students a broader point of view on academics and life in general.

Dan Kreiness Posted 8 months ago

I have gotten to know Basil as a fellow ASCD Emerging Leader and administrator for the past two years. In that time, he has stood out to me as an inspirational education leader who is passionate, focused, and kind. Basil's leadership style truly comes from the heart as he understands how to relate to and motivate both staff and students. He has a unique ability to inspire students who need extra support and nurturing. I even highlighted his leadership and educational vision when he was a guest on my Leader Of Learning podcast. Anyone can listen to that podcast episode by visiting https://leaderoflearning.com/episode34.

Helen Owens Posted 8 months ago

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Marin during esy during the summer of 2015. He was professional, charismatic, compassionate and caring. Thinks well under pressure and a great problem solver. Wish him well in all his future endeavors.

Andrew Spear Posted 8 months ago

Mr. Marin is the most positive and realistic administrator I have ever known, whether it be with faculty or students, he makes Churchland High School at better place. He is the most deserving individual of this award I know of, his leadership skills exceed possible quantification. I never fear having to talk with Mr. Marin about anything, regardless if its school related or personal. He cares legitimately cares about all of the faculty and particularly students in a way I have never seen and wants them to find a path and be successful in life, not just the easy students, but the ones no one else "wants" to work with. He is a fantastic mentor and role model for all who defines leading by example, the type of individual who is truly unique, the type of man I want my children to be and be around. The world needs more Basil Marin's, he is a shining light at the end of the tunnel so bright he's impossible to not see and gravitate toward. Mr. Marin exemplifies this award and the very fabric of what it stands for, he gets the bigger picture and is an inspiration to all of those lucky enough to have their lives touched by him.

Daniel Itterly Posted 8 months ago

Basil Marin is an excellent school administrator, and a role model not only for struggling at-risk students, but also for teachers. Mr. Marin helps students that come from adverse circumstances and backgrounds to succeed at Churchland High School. He does so by mentoring at-risk students, counselling them, teaching them, and encouraging them to care enough about themselves to strive to achieve what is positive. i.e., staying in school, learning, passing all of their classes, and receiving their diplomas. In addition, Mr. Marin has created a strong support system for teachers who are currently working with at-risk students through staff development workshops, presentations, and one-on-one meetings, that provide for them direction and encouragement. Basil Marin is a true example of what is is needed in public schools today, and I recommend him for the Life Changer of the Year Award.

Mitch Harris Posted 8 months ago

I have known Basil for many years and in that time he continues to epitomize selflessness. He has taken, caring for others, to a truly amazing level. Anyone who interacts with him, feels like the most important person in the room at that moment. Although he is quite a bit younger than me, I can truly say that he has been a role model for me professionally and personally.

Evan Manich Posted 8 months ago

I met Basil back when we were in college. From the day I met Basil, he had a special way to connect with people. He is one of a kind, he has always had open arms to help and love everyone he comes in contact with. He’s the rare type to give the shirt off his back even if it meant he’d be the one taking the cold. Anyone who has met him, I’m sure would agree he is a life changer. Any kid that is able to be around him and learn from him will help lead to a better future.

Chris Gannon Posted 8 months ago

Basil is a phenomenal educator, and his enthusiasm and dedication are contagious. I am always inspired whenever I interact with him, and I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award!

Renee Wheeler Posted 8 months ago

Mr.Basil Marin and I met over 10 years ago. As he was then...he remains, and that is an outstanding leader, role model, advocate, and philanthropist. His compassionate character has allowed for him to excel not only in his life as an educator, but others, he naturally becomes like family to so many. He understands that success, and determination is a drive that begin within ones family. I’ve seen him nurture these principles in the lives of people in the community we lived in. We were both employees at the Boys and Girls Club, Mr.Morin display such humbleness, empathy, and rationale when it comes to making an impact in the community. I am not surprised that he has been nominated Life Changer of the year, this is what he does, effortlessly, and is so deserving of this award, a T-shirt that says so, with a hat to match!

Rachel Thomas Posted 8 months ago

I fully and wholeheartedly support this nomination for Basil Marin! He is a young man who has overcome adversity and has already achieved so much! I myself have been on the receiving end of his encouragement and I can not tell you how much it meant to me then and still does now. Not even the sky is the limit for him, and I know he is going to achieve amazing things! The impact and change he has and will continue to make on young lives is immeasurable! Keep being great Basil!!!!

christina wilson Posted 8 months ago

I met Basil at my part time job and from that moment until now I knew that he was someone who did not judge but that truly and genuinely cared. Overtime I saw him he asked about my children, made me laugh and gave me words of encouragement & the BEST HUGS EVER. I see his heart for what he does and the children that he is help raising up in this generation through his work. The most memorable moment for me was when I had to make a tough decision about my marriage and my oldest son moving away. Basil said nothing, all he did was hug me and allow me to cry on his shoulders. Once i was done leaving a monsoon on his shirt he said that everything was going to be alright. His empathy, caring nature, and true concern for others well being will leave you encouraged and left to feel nothing more than you can overcome any obstacle in your way. I have been encouraged through our friendship and would never want to lose him in my life. So if he impacts a grown adult that way, how much more does encourage our children in his care? Basil you are a wonderful, hardworking, walking encouragement that anything you put your mind to you can accomplish and overcome. From my minions and I we love you and hope you continue to knock down walls.

Thomas C. Murray Posted 8 months ago

I first met Basil at the ASCD conference in 2018. Having just been recognized as an ASCD Emerging Leader, I was introduced to him as someone who had just received an award, but simply put, that's not what impressed me. (Although it's an incredibly impressive feat!) What instantly struck me was Basil's humility and passion for his work. We ended up spending a lot of time that night sharing stories, talking from the heart, sharing real struggles, and getting connected. The time together left an impression on me and we've stayed connected since. Basil is not simply a school leader, he is a person of integrity that models the way for the children that we serve. Although the number of awards he will receive over his career be large, his heart and love for children will forever remain even larger. He is the exact type of leader that the LifeChanger award epitomizes and I couldn't recommend a higher quality person and professional. Thomas C. I am happy to hear of Mr. Marin's nomination because I think he is very deserving of it. I have not known Mr. Marin long, but in the short period of time we have made acquaintance, he has come across as a very well-educated, positive, kind individual. I have had the chance to talk to him about different things in several occasions and he has always been very professional, attentive, intelligent, but most importantly, very approachable. I believe many times, administrators forget how to be personal, how to individualize their conversations to fit each need, instead they get caught into daily routines and become too stern when dealing with staff and students alike. This is not the case with Mr. Marin; he seems to always be in a good mood, to offer support to anyone at any time, to be patient, and to care for all equally. It is my wish that Mr. Marin gets awarded this nomination.

Through his work as an assistant principal in an alternative education program, he leads an environment where the students can thrive. As an ASCD board member, I have worked with Basil in the ASCD Emerging Leader program where he has had opportunities to be a featured speaker for our programs and share strategies to make change. He is able to move an audience with his personal stories of overcoming adversity and being a champion for at risk students. It is exciting to see such a young leader move with such spirit and focus. Integrity and humility are woven into his character. There is no doubt in my mind that Basil will continue to inspire and be a phenomenal change agent in our education world. It is an honor to call Basil a colleague and a friend.

It has been a pleasure working with Mr. Marin,he is such a great burst of new energy. When I first met Mr. Marin 2 years ago, his kind and inviting spirit was present immediately. He has such a unique and dynamic way of showing how much he cares for the students, while being firm and genuine at the same time. He is a great addition to Churchland High.

It is incredibly difficult to capture Basil's impact in mere words; he's truly ineffable. Basil's capacity to be an amazing administrator is not based solely on his institutional knowledge, experience, and training but is attributed mostly the fabric of his character. His passion to impact the lives of students and to build the professional capacities of teachers is astounding. Basil leads with consistency, balance, compassion, and enthusiasm, which impacts those around him. His leadership style is most visible in the way he deals with challenging situations and moments of crisis. Additionally, one of his greatest gifts is acting as a "mender." He has an incredible gift to help students and adults "see" themselves in a new light, from a different perspective. It is during "these" moments where impact and change take place. It is not often when people can point out the moment their life changed. However, it is my guarantee that those who come in contact with Basil can not only pinpoint that moment but also use that moment to pay it forward. That is the true essence of a Life Changer...

I have been in education for 40 years and Basil Marin is one of the finest educators with whom I have had the good fortune of knowing. I have seen him develop as an extraordinary leader- always keeping kids at the heart of his work. He is humble, courageous, and focused. Sometimes when you are fortunate enough, you come upon people who immediately mean something to you...someone to whom you can turn, knowing that being with them is coming home. By home, I mean someone who shares your life’s mission. For me, Basil is one of those people. When I am in his presence, I am optimistic about the future of education. Basil is the real deal.

For the past two years, I have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Marin. He is very professional and consistently displays a positive attitude thus setting a wonderful example for students. It is evident that he cares about helping them to be successful. He is a very supportive leader whose pleasant demeanor is greatly appreciated and I believe he is definitely deserving of this honor.

Grace Claro Posted 8 months ago

Mr. Marin is what is known as a force multiplier: his ability to empathize, create safe environments, give recognition, and connect with his students on a human level is what allows his students to find, hone in on, and invest 110% into themselves. Any one of those things alone is enough to help, but bringing them together successfully - and in balance - is a skill that cannot be taught. In creating the environment that allows them to thrive, these students are empowered to change their own lives in ways that would likely have never been possible otherwise. It has been my honor and pleasure to know Basil as he continues to work to make a difference for all of his students.

Everyone - from students to administrators - knows that Basil honors his commitments, works tirelessly to resolve problems large and small, and will always take the time to lend an ear or a hand to anyone who needs it. It’s not a matter of going “above and beyond,” it’s simply who Basil is.

Michael Holley Posted 8 months ago

I have worked with Mr. Marin for 2 years now, but the way we work off of each other you would think that we have known each other for much longer. As the school resource officer (police officer) for Churchland High School, Mr. Marin and I will find ourselves dealing with the same students on a daily basis. As I observe the way that Mr. Marin handles the students, I have learned to also handle the students in the same manner. When Mr. Marin and I deal with a student together, I have found that he is able to deescalate a student even when I have to be in the room with the child for safety reasons. Mr. Marin is also not afraid to jump into a situation and get is “hands dirty” when it comes to breaking up student altercations and even stepping in and preventing an altercation before it occurs. Once the altercation is over Mr. Marin talks to the student so that they have an opportunity to tell their side of the issue and is upfront with what discipline will be given based on the student’s actions which is usually received positively by the student. Finally, it would not take someone long if they walked around the school to see that Mr. Marin has the respect of both the students and staff members which is required to help keep a peaceful working/learning environment in our school and because of this I feel he deserves the Life Changer of the Year Award.

The first time I met Basil Marin was when he was selected as the graduate student speaker for the Advanced Degree Luncheon at Old Dominion University when he was completing his masters degree. I was working in the alumni office at the time. It is an honor to be selected to be the speaker at that event, and it was a pleasure to hear his speech, but I didn't anticipate that our paths would cross again. I was pleasantly surprised to meet him again at a fundraising event at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where I now work. We can alway count on him to volunteer for our events, and to see each event through from beginning to end. Mr. Marin is incredibly generous with his time and talents, and passionate about giving to causes he cares about.

I worked with Basil when he was still a college student and paying it forward by working with youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs. Basil was a Club alumnus and a former Club "Youth of the Year." He was always dedicated, mature, polite and friendly to all. He was respected by his peers and well-received by all in the community. Honestly, Basil had great, and godly parents as role models who raised him well. Our real job was just helping to provide opportunities for him to shine and paths for him to pursue. I'm so proud of the man he's become, most of all because he's always been humble, coachable and has retained a passion for personal growth and continual improvement. Prayers and endless praise for Basil, he deserves all the good that comes his way. He's poured a lot of his life unselfishly into young people and has done his part to pay it forward to the kids.

It is with extreme pride and joy that I recommend Basil Marin for this prestigious Lifechanger of the Year award. I was blessed to work with Basil when he was a high school student. I was lucky to be his teacher, mentor, and FBLA adviser during those formative years. Basil had leadership qualities even in high school, and I never doubted he would do great things. He was an extraordinary active member of Future Business Leaders of America and built relationships with youth and adults alike. He was always a caring friend to other students and worked hard not only in school but in church and community activities as well. Basil’s maturity as a teen ager was far above that if his peers. He learned the importance of positivity in all things and community service and life-long learning. Basil has continued to keep me posted of his educational and vocational journey. He has put his faith and experiences into practice making sure all students have opportunities to succeed. As a former role model for Basil, I am proud to now call Basil one of my role models! Well deserved my friend!

If you watch him, for even a short time, you will see his passion for students and his dedication to relationships. He bonds with students without crossing boundaries. He holds student responsible without demeaning them. He is always there to support what he asks them to do. He is a constant barrage of encouragement to staff and students. Many times I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Basil about his career in school administration. The spark in his eyes as he talks about the joy he experiences from helping students is truly special. I received a world class public school education in Fairfax County, and a lot of truly excellent teachers and administrators helped me along my way. However, I can safely say I never encountered anyone who had the magical combination of passion for the job and insistence on getting the job done the right way that Basil has. I got my undergraduate degree in education but moved on to pursue an MBA and a career in business, and every time I talk to him, I feel a twinge of regret that I didn’t stick with the education track. If Basil can inspire me to want to change my life as an adult, who knows what I could have accomplished if I’d had someone like him in my life when I was in high school.

6 years ago, I had the privilege to work with this man, Basil Marin, at Shenandoah Academy in Harrisonburg, Va! Words cannot express how influential he is when working one on one with at-risk youth! From inspiring them to do better, challenging their negative thinking, to giving them a real life example of how success can still be achieved even when the odds are against you! Now look at him, speaking on a national level with his platform presentation “Reaching the unreachable student.”, working on his Ph.D, and working as the Assistant Principal at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va! When the World walks out and gives up on your child, and your child has even given up on their self, Mr. Basil is the type of man who walks in and never gives up on them! He is one of the best advocates for children that I have ever met in my lifetime!

He has an exceptionally positive outlook on life, and is a true mentor. He does everything with the biggest smile on his face, and thrives whole heartedly on what he does. I don’t see this more as a “career” as it is his “calling” Basil has found his purpose, and he is going to pathe the way for so many children. It’s a true inspiration to call him a friend.

Mr. Marin is an asset to the commonwealth of Virginia, our nation, and the future of this world. He truly is an authentic leader and deserves to be recognized as such. Mr. Marin has separated himself from his generation by shouldering the less popular responsibility of being a role model and an educator of our youth. Many shy away from the calling to be an example, a role model. Many see education as a tool, a means to an end. Mr. Marin is helping to restore the glory to the profession of education. He is making it “cool” to be a lighthouse of hope and an example. Without question Mr Marin is changing lives.

There wasn’t a day Basil didn’t entertain us or taught us basic life principles. He never got angry at anyone but lead them into the right pathway. The vibe Basil gives off is peaceful and relaxing. Basil taught me everything I need to know, Thank you Basil

I met Mr. Marin approximately three years ago. At the time he was seeking an administrative position. The positive energy and love for students was clear then, and is even more so now that he is in that position. He is recognized by his peers for his good works and is certainly deserving of this award. He is a Lifechanger.

Jeffrey Sudderth Posted 8 months ago

As a behavior specialist at Churchland High School, I have been afforded the opportunity to work directly with Mr. Marin. He embodies everything that one seeks in an administrator and educator. On a daily basis, I witness his dedication, expertise and work ethic as he shapes the minds and futures of the young people left in his charge. His students are able to relate to him and he remains accessible to them at all times. He serves as an outstanding mentor and role model for the young men and women of Churchland High School to emulate. He also offers unwavering support for his fellow staff members and colleagues and is always there to offer a word of kindness or advice. If the Life-Changer Award is an acknowledgement of sustained excellence and dedication, Mr. Marin would be a deserving recipient. I believe we have only just begun to see the impact that Mr. Marin will ultimately have in the fields of education and personal development. It has been an absolute honor to work with and know him.

Mr. Marin is an amazing administrator. What is so amazing is that he teaches through his character and humility. I personally find his humor, spirit and ability to go with the flow refreshing. His nomination only validates my initial thoughts upon meeting him. When you meet someone with a smile as bright as Basil's they instantly change your mood and remind you to smile as well. He changes moods and changes lives by always smiling on the inside and outside. He is optimistic and kind. Students, parents, teachers and myself are inspired by Basil's attitude.

Author Leo Tolstoy once said "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” This is not the case for the impressive leader Basil Marin. Basil preaches of his humble beginnings and struggles in his early life while maintaining his optimism for a brighter future. He constantly thinks and talks about how he has changed his life and now has a mission to change others. Basil serves the youth in more then an educational leader capacity but a humanitarian capacity. Basil gets to know each and every student and person he is around. Once Basil gets to know them he targets ways in which he can positively impact their life. No child is the exact same and Basil takes time to be real with people while constantly pushing them in a positive direction. In my discussions with Basil I could sense his time he spent in alternative education as I have also worked in that field. He has worked with impoverished students who needed a role model. Basil is not only a role model but a trailblazer in looking at ways to meet the needs of students in order to even the educational playing field. Basil's great personality does not go unnoticed as he has climbed up the ranks of schools and continues to shine as a guest speaker. Basil's words and story is powerful and the world needs to see and hear him more and more. It is an honor of mine to nominate my friend Basil for higher recognition. If I had the choice of any school in America to send my daughters, I would not look any further then Basil's school because I know he can provide safety, equity, positive environments, knowledge, and so much more. Basil is just getting started making his impact.

Although I've only known Mr. Marin for a short time, I can unequivocally say that he is most deserving of this award! From first meeting him during my interview, it was evident that he is a passionate educator who prioritizes the needs of students. His firm yet gentle demeanor not only commands respect from students and faculty, but it helps set the tone for a positive learning environment that is framed by both kindness and discipline. I feel blessed to have made his acquaintance and have him as an administrator.

I would be honored to endorse Mr. Marin for the Life Changer award. He has been instrumental in influencing the lives of many. He can often be seen counseling students who maybe for the first time feel they are being respected and guided rather than chastised. He lets students know they are valued and can achieve great things. He has high expectations for his staff as well. His attitude and examples inspire others to better themselves. Thanks for all you do Mr Marin.

It is my pleasure to provide this reccommendation for Mr. Marin as he pursues the Life Changer of the Year Award. I've had the pleasure and is fortunate to work with Mr. Marin as our Asst. prinipal and administrator for Special Education in our building. It is amazing to watch him interact with our Special Needs students with such calmness, patience, and finesse. When redirecting the students, he has a calmness in his voice tone that is truly a gift. In addition to having a great rapport with the students, he exhibits professionalism in his mannerisms as well as dress attire. When or if we (teachers/ support staff) need him, he is approachable and will listen to our immediate concerns, in addition to resolving the concern/problem at hand. I'm hoping that he will continue to stay humble, focused, and steadfast in achieving his personal goals in life, because all of our children truly need caring people like Mr. Marin.

Mr. Marin embodies everything you want in a teacher and educational leader. He has an absolute belief that every child can achieve at high levels and an unwavering commitment to equity and reaching the "unreachable student." Mr. Marin is a role model for both students and adults alike - he is a life-long learner, brings his best every day and is always striving to grow and improve his educational and leadership practices to have a greater impact. Through his work with the Beyond the Bell afterschool programs in Harrisonburg (VA), I saw first hand his unique ability to build relationships with marginalized youth and provide the guidance, resources and support they needed to help them re-engage with their education and increase their self efficacy. Since leaving Harrisonburg to pursue higher education and his career in educational leadership, Mr. Marin has truly blossomed and is walking into his promise as a champion for "at-risk" youth. There is no one more deserving for this recognition - both for the lives he has already changed and the countless others he will undoubtedly change in the years ahead.

Mr. Basil Marin is an amazing administrator who understands the needs of ALL children! With his kind demeanor and spirited mindset to advocacy, I do not see a better candidate for the "LifeChanger of The Year" award. In working with Mr. Marin for the past 5 months, I've seen the positivity he's poured into new staff members, like myself, as well as the students that gravitate to him. He has a unique and dynamic way of showing his caring love to students, while being firm and genuine at the same time. In my eye, he ranks as one of the leaders in the school as well as within the community. I try to model the way he cultivates kids in my everyday lessons, to show them creative ways in being successful. He DEFINITELY deserves the "LifeChanger of the Year" recognition.

I’ve known Basil since his mentor days at the Boys and Girls club. Being a single working mom to two very young children, at that time, was stressful. After school they would take the activity bus down to the Boys and Girls Club. Just knowing that my young son and daughter had someone like Basil waiting for them was a huge relief for me. He was kind, caring, and selfless. He would help the children with their homework, and even help them with putting on production los for the parents. I can not begin to explain the kind of character Basil has. From a confidant to the children, to being able to play right along side of them. My son is 18 now, and daughter 16, and they still count Basil as a friend. He truly is a remarkable person!

He deserves the LifeChanger of the Year recognition.

Through his social media personaI have come to know Basil as a very pleasant compassionate person and passionate educator. When I finally met him in person last year, I learned this was no persona; this is the nature of his being. Now, I can add encouraging, humble and hungry for advancement in a way that will allow him to extend his service to others. His hunger to help children is inspiring to everyone he encounters. I learned of his story in November 2018, when we worked together on a project with ASCD and I sat in on his presentation. His passion for sharing his experience in an effort for educators to create a better experience left the entire room encouraged to want more and do better by the young people we serve. I think what resonated with me beyond being encouraged, was the evidence of his belief by way his model. Basil, encouraged relationships through his words, photographs of him with his students and team, and even how he worked with members of our team. He is one who truly "walks the walk." I am not only inspired by Basil, I am extremely proud of him . I endorse this Life Changer in Hope's he will have the opportunity to impact even more lives.

I was blessed to be formally introduced to Basil through a mutual friend at an ODU alumni event. While we got our master’s degrees in educational leadership at the same time and through the same university, we never formally had a class together. I knew immediately when I met Basil that he was going to be a friend and professional support to me. His inviting demeanor and his passion for his work show in his actions. I am honored to call Basil a friend and am proud to watch and cheer him along as he continues to positively impact students and further his professional growth. I always joke that I want to be Basil when I grow up— it’s not a bad goal. ??

I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Marin amidst his experience within SECEP's Chesapeake Center. Mr. Marin took time to get to know each of his students as individuals, no matter how challenging, in efforts to better pinpoint to what they needed to find their personal path of success. I have seen Mr. Marin tackle difficult and very real situations with his students, consistently balancing his approach with a sense of compassionate respect and firm, unapologetic realism - all while lifting up the strengths each student brought to the world. I have no doubt that no matter his role in life or professional career, Mr. Marin will continue to inspire those around him.

Basil is the first born of our 4 children. As the first born, he learned leadership skills very early. As a mother, it has brought me great joy to see Basil use and develop those skills as a leader and administrator. It is wonderful to see him in a situations with an upset parent or angry child and see him be able to descalate the situation. Basil is a great leader and administrator. He is impacting young people and changing lives. He has a heart and love for children and youth. I am proud of him and his many achievements. Continue to follow your passions and dreams Basil (JR). I can't wait to call you Dr. Basil Marin, son. Love you so much and very proud of you. Mom

I knew Basil for a short time.... but in that short time he left an impression on me that will stay forever. He made this same impression on each child that he meet. He lifted them, gave them hope, understood and listened. For the short time I was given, I will forever be thankful

I have known Basil for many years through our parents and school. The level of dedication he strives towards everyday to help kids reach their goals in life shows just how much he values each and every one of his students. Basil has always been one to reach for the stars and to exceed beyond expectation. I can only look back and smile in admiration upon all of his major accomplishments. I know that whatever he plans to do next in life will be big.

I worked with Basil at Boys and Girls Club in Harrisonburg, Va. Basil has a gift working with youth and is one of the hardest working guys I know. He is a natural leader and one of the most genuine people I know. He has a big heart and he can do anything he sets his mind to.

Alysse Posted 8 months ago

I’ve known Basil for more than half of my life and there is absolutely no one more deserving of this than he is. He has a heart of pure gold, more patience than a saint and the drive to make a genuine difference in the life of everyone he comes in contact with.

I fully support Basil and his exceptional work for LifeChanger of the Year!

Natasa Pupic Posted 8 months ago

I met Basil 12 years ago when he worked at the Boys & Girls Club-Harrisonburg. I was new at the time and didn’t know anyone there which at the tender age of 16 was beyond intimidating. Naturally intuitive, Basil noticed that and immediately began playing basketball with me and making sure I was included and introduced to everyone. Even after I stopped attending the Boys & Girls Club, I remembered Basil for his kindness and for being an exemplary mentor to those around him. A few years later, I ran into Basil again and was able to thank him for what he did for him all those years ago. Today, I stay up to date with his ambition and accomplishments through social media and I’m continuously amazed and thankful to have had the pleasure of meeting such a wonderful and caring young man. The choice is an easy one, Basil Marin is the ultimate LIFE CHANGER!

Mike McMillan Posted 8 months ago

As long as I could remember Basil was always looking for ways to help people out in any way that he could. Basil has a certain energy about him that whenever he walks in the room his presence is immediately felt. I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this award!

There are people who cross your path in life, that they don’t have to say a word, because you can “see” their character by the way they interact with others. Basil is one of those people. Not only does he talk it, he walks it. Always very positive, and invested in the lives of his students. He is a great role model for students and colleagues. I only knew Basil for one school year and the impression he made on me, well, I can’t wait to see what doors are going to open for him. He truly has the heart of an educator and mountain mover!

I met Basil at the Boys and Girls Club. It was outwardly obvious that Basil cared about each and every child as individuals that attended the program. The children looked up to Basil and it was expressed in their interactions. He is a wonderful and positive mentor to all children. His passion for working with children shows in his determination and dedication. He truly is an amazing man.

I've know Basil Marin since 8th grade year when i would go to the boys and girls club at the after school program in the high school. He was always kind and considerate was always looking out for others and making sure there well being was taken care of. The kind of leadership Mr.Marin has is hard to come by and what he exemplifies of how to treat others and going above and beyond in helping the community is amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about and i got to see the impact he has made in Portsmouth and at churchland high school, when i had a one on one conversation with staff when the high school i coach at had state qualifiers for the wrestling tournament. Thanks for being there and being a great role model.

I first met Basil in 2014 at a church we had in common. One of the very first conversations we had was about his academic trek towards becoming a principal within the school's system. He was currently working at SECEP. He has always exemplified a willingness to help others as well as he has an unprecedented compassion for all people in particular students. Everything about Basil exudes "Lifechanger". Our young people in the communities are in desperate need of a man of his intellect and knowledge. I do hope they consider it a privilege to have him as a leader for their educational endeavors.

Allie Rodman Posted 8 months ago

Basil and I met through ASCD a few years ago, and I truly respect his work as a thought leader in education. Basil builds capacity in his team and empowers them to collectively support the whole child - keeping students healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. I value him as a colleague, collaborator, and friend and fully support his nomination for the National Life Group Lifechanger of the Year Award.

When I think of a champion for youth, I think of Basil Marin. I’ve known Basil for a couple of years now and I consider him a mentor. I look up to Basil and hope I can grow to inspire others as he does. After attending a training led by Basil, I left with tears. Not sad tears, but tears of hope. As someone who struggled in school, Basil spoke about his education journey and how he was impacted by mentors and teachers. Basils passion for youth is beyond this world because he understands and comes from a place of empathy. Basil has impacted so many youth over his time in education and will continue to improve the lives of those around him!

I met Basil at the Boys&Girls club in Harrisonburg,Va. He volunteered in the teen center and was always a fun and interactive person to have around. Always willing to help us young kids out with homework or giving us pointers on our basketball game. You could always tell he did his job because he cared and not because he had to. Appreciate the support and time he took to help me out .

I have known Basil well over 10 years now and have worked along side of him during his time at boys & girls club. Even though we are close in age, Basil has always been my mentor and someone who I look up to tremendously. Basil has always had a deep passion for all youth and has an unique and unmatched way of building relationships with youth that are experiencing at risk situations at home. He has and will always be an advocate for young people. He has been changing lives since the very moment he stepped into the Junior Staff role at Boys & Girls club around the age of 14.

I first met Mr. Marin when I started to work for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harrisonburg. I was in awe at how well Basil worked with the kids. He was amazing. I am not at all surprised with all of his hard work at where he is today. He will move mountains. I feel I am a better person by just getting to work with him as a young man back in 2008.

I first met Basil Marin at the ASCD Leader to Leader Conference in July, 2017. Having been selected as a 2016 ASCD Emerging Leader one year earlier, I thought I would be the one to inspire and lead Basil--Just the opposite. In the first thirty seconds of talking, he encouraged me to pursue administration and gave me reasons why he felt administration was so important as a leadership role to help and serve others. But it wasn't until a little while later when I got to know Basil on a deeper level. Should-to-shoulder on an airplane ride to ASCD's Conference on Educational Leadership in the November, 2018, we had deeper conversations. One theme that streamlined all topics was how people crave and respect authenticity, a theme that I'd learn would later define Basil. Finally, he shared with me that he would be presenting at this conference, and he invited me to his session. Basil's session was an unforgettable experience. It was here that I first heard Basil's life story. There was not a dry eye in the standing-room-only space, and not just because of Basil's amazing journey, but because of how Basil related and applied his experiences to helping kids today. I didn't get to talk to Basil after his presentation, because the line to get to him was so deep with people wanting an autograph, a picture, and really--a hug. What I really enjoy about composing this endorsement is that I don't need to fake it. You see, to know Basil is to know authenticity. To know Basil is to be inspired. To know Basil is to know a lifechanger. He's the real deal. He's living what he speaks. His attitude and outlook are exactly what we need more of in education and in the world today. Want proof? Just have a conversation with him. From these interactions alone--and all aforementioned reasons--Basil Marin has my full, absolute, and unequivocal endorsement to earn well-deserved recognition as LifeChanger of the Year.

Mr. Marin is one of the most dedicated and passionate people in education that I know. He works hard to helps others achieve and encourages them to reach their full potential. During his time at SECEP he worked hard to help the young men and ladies to obtain their education and reintegrate to public school. He helped them focus on the positives in their life and turn the negative into something they could use to improve themselves with, rather than a shortfall. Mr. Marin focuses on the good in the student and helps them see their true potential. He is a great educator as well as administrator, he takes his work seriously and has high expectations for all. He is the kind of man that sees the good in the worst situations and is willing to help you regardless of who you he is a caring person, he is a"Life Changer". I’ve had the absolute pleasure of knowing Basil over the last 2 years and I can honestly say I’ve been inspired, humbled, and in awe of how much he loves his students, his profession, and his journey in this life. Since I’ve known him I’ve seen & heard of how many students he supports, believes in, and helps to find purpose and connection in their education and life. Furthermore, being an assistant principal has also allowed him to connect with, support, and encourage his staff to strive to be the best they can for their students, the school, and the community. There are a lot of educators who are very passionate and love what they do. Basil is a couple of levels above this as he not only loves what he does and brings his passion every single day, but he does this with such amazing authenticity and honesty for all students, especially those who might otherwise get missed in our education system. Basil not only touches and changes the lives of his students; he also does so for his friends and colleagues. As I mentioned, I’m humbled, inspired, and in awe of who he is as a person, a leader, and a life changer.

I just don't know where to begin! Basil is one of the most amazing individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting. I moved to VA in 2015 and he was my next door neighbor at the time. In our initial meeting he was so hospitable and very welcoming. Since that initial meeting we became great friends. He has always shown a very deep level of concern for my well being and has always been nothing short of a great friend, mentor, and counselor. Basil's passion and drive is what sets him apart. He always shows a very compassionate, loving method with dealing with anyone he encounters! To sum it all up, Basil is definitely a pleasant experience. Anyone that enters his sphere will leave better than the way they came, no matter the circumstance. He Always has an amazing word of encouragement! Basil is what we need more of in this society (world).

He was always willing to go the extra mile for a student or teacher providing learning and instructional counsel respectfully. He was also always willing to face any challenge head on in order to ultimately come to a resolution as we worked together as a team. Mr. Marin is truly an effective leader as he maintains professionalism along with setting clear positive expectations additionally fostering open communication for staff and students.

What is there not to say about this man!? I met Basil during a conference where I had the opportunity to attend his professional development on helping the unreachable child. This event not only made me think about those continuous biases that are set against children that may not have the cleanest background but made me reflect on what teachers impacted my life as well. Basil is more than a LifeChanger, but a Life Champion, and continues to impact students, teachers, and educational professionals each day. As a young man, it would be salient to give an award of such honor to continue his story from blossoming from a young man who struggled to a person that impacts lives. In my short time of meeting Basil, I have felt inspired to do more and create opportunities for students that they may have never had before. Regardless of the award, Basil is a LifeChanger, LifeChampion, and LifeInspirer. Thank You

Mr. Marin reaches the students in a remarkable way, he speaks to their hearts and guides them through any tough times and uplifts them through the great times. In such a disturbing world we live in, Mr. Marin reminds our young people there is hope! Mr. Marin is passionate about his impact on others and it definitely shows day after day. Mr. Marin has certainly changed lives. He has impacted the cultural awareness at Churchland High School and how we build a rapport with every student. Without hesitation, I believe he is the most deserving of this award. I know he will humbly accept the award as affirmation and confirmation of his life changing motives.

I knew of Mr. Marin's reputation of being a change agent long before we met. His actions match and exceed his words because he is focused on making a difference and knows that action speak louder than words. He would be satisfied making a difference one child at a time. Thankfully he is getting national attention. What is he doing with that attention? He is using the brightness of the spotlight to inspire us to shine our own lights in ways that light paths for children so that their journeys are more meaningful and productive.

Mr. Marin is an outstanding leader and it is a joy to work with him. He leads by example, has great interpersonal skills, is very understanding and is very transparent! These qualities are very significant in the role as a high school administrator. He's also been great encouragement for me to not give up and continue to pursue my dream to be an administrator. He is the embodiment of a great leader and his very last name MARIN spells: *Manages schedules, teachers, staff and students with fairness *Adept at listening to students, teachers and parents and creating win-win solutions *Radiant and charismatic personality that create cohesiveness to diverse audiences *Integrity – treats students, teachers and parents with respect and dignity *Noteworthy – creating positive outcomes for all students. I salute him as he should be the poster child for the Life Changer of the year award! Congratulations Mr. Marin!

Charles Thompson Posted 8 months ago

I met Mr. Marin for the first time during my interview for Portsmouth Public Schools. From that moment I could see there was something different, something special about him. He is a teacher at heart, a rare, student-first administrator who prioritizes the success of the individual, while inspiring the whole student body to greater achievement. He is simultaneously self-effacing and confident, professional and cool, unlike any administrator I have met in more than 20 years of teaching. There is a “theory” among teachers that administrators originate from two types of educators: those who want to escape the classroom, and those who want to avoid the children. Mr. Marin, in my experience, is unique. He enjoys being in the classroom and providing support and advice grounded in evidence-based practices. It is obvious that he misses the day to day of being a classroom teacher. Equally obvious is his affinity for the kids, especially the students who are the most difficult to reach. He makes it a point to know every student in the school and to treat them with dignity and respect. He is the personification of the Golden Rule, a true role model for everyone in the school, students and staff. The Life Changer of the Year title describes Mr. Marin, but to me, my students, and my colleagues, he is much more. Basil Marin is going to be a “life changer” of a generation. I look forward to reminiscing in retirement, “I knew Basil Marin when he was just an Assistant Principal at Churchland, before he …..”

Inspiring, Motivational, Caring, and Humble. These are some of the many characteristics that Mr. Marin exudes on a daily basis here at Churchland High School. As my mentor and now who I would deem as a lifelong friend, Mr. Marin is truly an authentic and compassionate leader. He represents selflessness and love. I have seen him on numerous occasions go above and beyond the call of duty. Often times he is found counseling students and motivating them to reach for greatness. He is known to give his undivided attention to not only his students but staff members who are in need of encouragement, innovative ideas for the classroom, and support in difficult situations. He exemplifies the true definition of what a principal should demonstrate to aspiring administrators locally and nationally. The wisdom that he has shared with me will forever be cherished and applied in my future endeavors. Mr. Marin is a true LifeChanger and it has been a joy, blessing and an honor to be his mentee and colleague.

Most students who come to work on a Master’s program at the college level are bright, driven, and eager. But, rarely do I find a student that shows such exceptional ability and giftedness that I pull that student aside and tell them that they need to get their doctorate so that they can guide and inspire others. Basil was one such exceptional student! It was a pleasure to be around him, to have him in class, and to watch him practice teaching in front of a group. He exhibited ability, intelligence, and that innate ability to make a difference. I am so proud of what he has accomplished, but I am not surprised. Basil, you have earned this commendation. Congratulations on the nomination for this high honor! It has not come from luck but because God has endowed you with great ability and you are using those gifts to help and influence those around you. Blessings, my son.

Several years ago, I had Basil in a graduate class on campus at Liberty University. During my own educational beginnings I had a professor that pulled me aside and said, “You should pursue your doctorate, you could do this!” Now that I am a professor I look for those opportunities to encourage a student, one that shows exceptional promise. Basil was one such student. Ability and promise just exuded from him. It made me feel good just to be around him. He truly was outstanding, and I told him what I saw in him. I am so proud of what he has accomplished but even more proud at his commitment to helping students in his schools. It is always a proud moment when you see one of your own students excelling in an area where you know they have unusual ability! Basil, congratulations on your nomination! You deserve every commendation!

Mr. Marin has been such an important role model and mentor during my time at Churchland High School. Never have I known such a strong, inspirational, supportive assistant principal, who truly deserves the moniker “leader” instead. My first semester at CHS was very difficult, and Mr. Marin was always there to listen to my concerns and provide advice and to support me through a variety of difficult situations. We both started at CHS at the same time, and immediately hit the ground running. There has never been a moment when I doubted Mr. Marin’s dedication to both CHS and his teachers. Mr. Marin does more than what is written in his job description; he takes an interest in the people who work with him. He never fails to greet everyone he sees in the hallways, and checks in periodically when he recognizes both students and teachers who are having off days. Many students request to speak to Mr. Marin about personal matters because they know he is willing to listen and offer advice and strategies to overcome issues first rather than jumping to consequences. I am sure he has offered such aid to teachers as well, as I can certainly vouch that he has for me. I will never forget my first semester, during which I had two particularly difficult situations. As a first-year teacher and a young teacher, Mr. Marin did not just sit in on meetings with me and help mediate conversations; he took the time to teach me ways to communicate more effectively in the future. As someone who fell into teaching accidentally, under Mr. Marin’s guidance and support, I have never been more thankful to be where I am today. I definitely believe Mr. Marin deserves this award because of the large impact he has made on teachers and students at CHS in such a short amount of time. I can only imagine what he will do the longer he remains here, but I certainly hope to be here to see it all.

I first met Basil during my orientation week of undergrad at James Madison University which is now over 10 years ago and he has been nothing short of a blessing from the start. Basil leads by example and is a man that is a wonderful depiction of what love, dedication and hard work can achieve. From random messages of encouragement to physically showing up in your time of need Basil embodies what it means to be a LifeChanger. The same compassion he gives to his friends he gives to the community and most importantly his students. Basil and I share a professional learning network as Black Male educators. Through a coaching call, I’ve come to learn more about his core values and what motivates him. One thing that stood out to me was his ability to see obstacles as opportunities and his desire to lead others. He’s a star to watch; in the next decade, Basil will undoubtedly be position to further effect change in education and his community. Onward...

Mr. Marin is a caring leader. Often busy but he still takes time to say "thank you", which means a lot. Caring, consistency, and communication is what I see in this young man. Mr. Marin is a fine example of a good leader to everyone.

Mr. Marin’s story is a very inspiring one as he has ascended the ranks in his educational career. Effectively he has captured the essence of being an effective educator... cultivate relationships! Reaching the unreachable student is what beleagueres school districts nationwide manifesting itself through increased suspension rates, high drop out rates, and senseless assaults on teachers. Mr. Marin has a demonstrated skill set in establishing and maintaining relationships with students who have been written off by others. He epitomizes the adage “kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” As an Emerging Leader, he is definitely one to watch as I predict his platform will grow exponentially. All educators would be served well by gleaning additional insight from this sagacious student centered administrator when he decides to encapsulate his experiences in what will undoubtedly be a best selling educational resource guide. Mr. Basil’s imprint is making a last indelible impression in many students’ lives because he is definitely a life changer!

It is truly a pleasure having this opportunity to acknowledge someone who truly deserves support. From day one, Mr. Marin has been very encouraging and consistently supportive regarding my professional needs. As a new teacher, things can start out rocky to say the least. During my first year teaching, Mr. Marin has not only provided me with professional feedback, but he has also made himself available to assist in helping me succeed in any way that he can. I would have to say that his support has helped me grow quickly, in a very short period of time. Mr. Marin’s communication and daily interactions with our students demands respect, and it is very clear to me that every student understands that. His nonjudgmental approach is what I believe draws some of our most troubled students to him. In my opinion, Mr. Marin is a perfect example of what leadership is. He doesn’t lead by mere words or posturing, but by being a living example to our students and everyone around him.

Mr. Marin is a world changer not only for his students, but for staff as well. Through everything that he has to do he still makes time to handle whatever his staff members want him to do. As a new teacher at Churchland High School I was given the warmest welcome from Mr. Marin. He made me feel loved and cared for as a faculty member on day one. He told me that his door was always open for me as I entered a new school year in a new school. Since that time I have seen Mr. Marin's interactions with student,s and his love and care for them is like nothing I've ever seen from an administrator. The caring way in which he speaks with them and guides them is not only heart warming, but also leads many of them down a better bath. Mr. Marin takes the time with EVERY STUDENT and there is no doubt he makes a huge difference in the lives of many.

Mr. Marin and I would talk about the innovative ideas and procedures he would one day implement in his classes. The Mr. Marin you see now is the Basil, I had the honor to work with ... he gave 150% during those early years and nothing was beneath him ... he used those times to grow and observe ... Basil was a gem then and continues to shine and not lose his intense love for students and their achievements while at other times catapulting them into moving from a place of weakness to strength. Basil is also an armour bearer for staff and fellow administrators... Basil is a rare gem ... continue to shine brightly for this generation you have assigned to mentor and educate...

On the very first day he arrived at Churchland you could immediately sense his positive, caring attitude. The way he treats us is the way everyone should be treated. He is a wonderful role model to our students and staff. The young people in our building are lucky to have Mr. Marin to guide them through a very difficult time in their lives. He is a father figure to a lot of young people who do not have one and a constant reminder that they are not alone. Mr. Marin is wise beyond his young years and he is doing great things. I look forward to seeing what more he is going to do in the future. I am truly blessed that our paths have crossed and I will be forever changed by his presence here at Churchland.

Mr. Marin has been an exemplary administrator and mentor. He always takes the time to listen to personal or professional concerns, no matter how busy he is. Mr. Marin believes in HIS students to be successful. He is always honest and upfront with whomever he is dealing with while being respectful and supportive. This delicate balance is hard to find in anyone, much less an administrator. Mr. Marin has encouraged me to think outside the box and examine my own philosophies in order to improve my teaching and help students to reach their fullest potential. He ensures there is discipline and structure (which we all know students/young adults need) while also being loving and caring to those who need it the most. Words cannot express how influential Mr. Marin and his persona have improved my life, as well as the lives of our students.

Robin Duncan Posted 9 months ago

Mr. Marin embodies the title of the award that he is nominated for. He is definitely a life changer. When he looks at kids, they are not just "students" to him, they are humans that have a story. Humans that are a lot of the time - broken. Humans, that are pretty much just starting out on the road we call life. Mr. Marin feels that each child that he crosses paths with have a huge potential to become something great in this world. No matter what they are coming from or their situation at the time is. He gets to know each student in our school that he is able to. He finds out about that student, and then he builds a relationship with them. The reason he feels this is important, is so when he tells them "I believe in you" and "you can do it", they can look into his eyes and know that it is true. It is not just something that he is "saying" but he means that with all his heart. Why is that important? Because then, that child can accomplish almost anything they set their mind to - because someone believes in them! Because he has lived it, and he is living proof that even 1 person can be a LIFE CHANGER!

Sara Epperly Posted 9 months ago

I can’t emphasize enough how Mr. Basil Marin has changed my own family. This may not be a big deal to some, but at family functions (when a prayer should be said), Basil volunteers and completes it admirably. He sees “good” in every person and has the knack of finding the special talent that all humans possess, and then expounds on that talent. Some people talk to hear themselves talk. Basil talks, means every word he says, and most importantly, people listen. He doesn’t talk down to anyone and treats everyone the same. This is a rare trait in today’s society. Life changer of the year, most definitely.

Martin Burke Posted 9 months ago

"YES, ABSOLUTELY!!"-- this was my knee jerk involuntary reaction when asked to make comments supporting Mr. Marin as a Life changer. I have only had the pleasure of working with Mr. Marin for the past two years as he is the supervising administrator for the fine arts department in which I am a member. AND YET I can absolutely say he has completely affected the culture around the school in tremendous, dynamic, amazing ways! He effectively reaches students that are "rabble rousers" for any other person... he connects and realigns students who are near to quitting school altogether... he is pleasant and kind and friendly even after having a completely exhausting day with these aforementioned rabble rousers! Yes, Mr. Marin is a LIFE CHANGER and so deserving of this nomination because I can't imagine this high school being nearly as successful without him! Be encouraged Mr. Marin! You have NOT labored in vain!

Cathy Soenksen Posted 9 months ago

Basil Marin began his high school years in my English class for developing readers, and I can verify his statements that his passion and advocacy for students who struggle have been born from his own experience and the realization of his own potential. He sincerely wants his students to experience that degree of fulfillment and success and to continue the chain of inspiration. I have been fortunate indeed to have been able to follow his steps from the doors of my classroom to the honors-level classes he began to take in high school, to his extraordinary success in college and further steps of discovery as he continued to pursue higher education and find his calling. I am incredibly proud to say that the student has become the teacher, as Basil has inspired me to again pursue classes and follow in HIS footsteps toward an administrative role. His gifts of encouragement and perseverance impact all those in his circle of influence, and he is truly the embodiment of the "Lifechanger" moniker.

Mr. Marin is an assistant principal at my high school. One of the earliest experiences I had with him best describes who he is: I remember one time there was a female student that was skipping class. Mr. Marin asked her where her class was and she responded in a negative manner. I've seen many staff members get to this point and immediately write a referral, but not Mr. Marin, he responded differently. Instead of just writing her up or arguing with her, he spoke to her and was able to calm her down. He handled the situation with a lot of maturity and it inspired me to look at things differently. He is one of the few staff members who won't argue with students, but try to find a compromise and common ground.

I am a teacher at Churchland High school, and I have to say one of the most positive parts about my job has been having the opportunity to work with and learn from Mr. Marin! He shows an incredible amount of positiveness with students and staff! He is a force based in the idea of growth mindset! He shows us all what the power of yet truly is!!! I have grown as an educator as a result of knowing Mr. Marin. I appreciate beyond words the professionalism he shares with staff and how he takes students under his wing and works with them to always be successful. He has a way of scaffolding success for students that not only shows how innovated, and talented he is as an educator but I believe to be the biggest complement that he is able to show how much he cares on a daily basis. He balances caring for students with motivating them to identify and achieve their goals with ease! All I can say is he is a true educator and he has worked hard and deserves all the recognition available for all his efforts to make our youth successful and one day make this world a better place.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with Mr. Marin for the last two years. He has helped guide me in a new leadership position and has opened my eyes to other ways to deal with students. He has also been a quite an inspiration. He is not only a role model for students, but for anyone involved in the education system.

Mr. Marin is most deserving of this award. He is a game changer in not only students’ lives, but also in the lives of the teachers and staff in his building. Mr. Marin strives to share a positive message each and every day and never seems to waver from his efforts to reach the unreachable student. He is a master problem solver and can reach the students that many others have given up on. He works diligently to improve and initiate positive relationship building between students, parents, and teachers. Put simply, Mr. Marin gives tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him and he is the very definition of a Lifechanger.

Mr. Marin. What can I say about this incredible person. He has worked in the office next to me since September and in that time, I have come to witness who he is as a worker and a person. He has a special gift with connecting with the students at the high school we work at together and he is constantly encouraging and inspiring everyone to be better. Because he is an assistant principal, he is in charge of discipline, so many days are full of stresses, but he continues to persevere and remain positive throughout each obstacle. Mr. Marin does not struggle or hesitate to keep those around him in check, whether it be friends, co-workers, or students. He dives into the tough conversations with high energy and constantly checks in on those around him. Even in his busiest moments, he is extremely observant, making sure to keep in mind the feelings of those around him. He is a constant source of inspiration to strive to do our best in his actions and words. Despite all of these strengths, he remains humble and down-to-Earth, never being condescending and constantly ensuring that he strives to empathize with other's problems. He is consistently accessible and reliable to the staff members and students of our school, even the most difficult ones. He leans towards the students who pushes everyone else away and finds a way to connect. We deal with a wide variety of students and parents here, including low-income families, as well as many students who have mental disabilities and handicaps. Mr. Marin carries himself through interactions with everyone, seemingly with ease, and ensures that dignity is remained for these people in every situation. He should be your Life Changer of the Year for 2018 because he changes lives on a daily basis. He has changed my life at work and at home, making me strive to be the best version of myself because of his daily example. Mr. Marin is someone who makes an impact every day. Working in such close proximity to him, I have the pleasure and the privilege of witnessing this. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions! I can not think of a person more deserving of this title. Mr. Marin doesn't just impact and change the lives of his students, he impacts and changes the lives of his colleagues. I was having a hard time adjusting to the student body and the established customs of Churchland High School and had bumped heads with a few members of the staff. I was headings towards, justifiably, earning a reputation as a hot head and a difficult employee. Mr. Marin took his time to pull me aside and talk to me and help me to grow and learn from the conflicts I had created. By speaking with him I grew to see that I could benefit from finding ways to relieve stress and sought counseling over the Summer and Fall to improve my behavior as a teacher and a coach. This has caused me to have the most enjoyable semester in a very long time. I have been able to build a better rapport with my students and co-workers which has improved the learning environment for my students. Mr. Marin saw potential in me and worked with me to help me grow as a teacher because he knew it would help more students. I owe him a great deal and would love to see him earn this award. We are blessed to have him here at Churchland High and will enjoy it as long as we can...it will not be long before he has a building of his own! Thank you so much for everything Mr. Marin!
