Shareefah Mason was nominated by her principal, Jameile Choice.

Mrs. Mason grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a Hurricane Katrina transplant. She became a teacher through a six-week Alternative Certification program Dallas ISD created specifically for Katrina evacuees interested in education. A year after completing the program, she accepted her first position as a teacher in 2006 at Boude Storey Middle School, one of the most impoverished and lowest performing schools in Dallas ISD.

She took on the challenge immediately and became one of the highest performing teachers on her campus, with student achievement scores that supported her dedication and drive. What was so unbelievable was that she was challenged with teaching Texas History the first two years of her career, and she had never even heard of the subject! However, she was committed to the pursuit of excellence and ensuring that students of color received a quality education.

Her motto is "your address doesn’t dictate your success." She has always ensured her students knew they could truly overcome any obstacle if they used education as a pathway to success. She taught at Storey for seven years before transitioning to the role of Instructional Coach for one year at South Oak Cliff High School. Later, she decided that her desire was to shape students, not adults, so she headed back to the classroom.

She went back to Storey, reclaiming her title as Department Chair during an experimental initiative known as Imagine 2020, a pledge to remove low-performing schools from the State of Texas’ Improvement Required List. In this role, she championed a major turnaround by increasing Storey’s declining Social Studies scores that occurred in her year absence. She increased the scores by more than 20 percentage points in one year and was invited to a new challenge at the end of that school year.

Dallas ISD had created two unprecedented programs. First, the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI) ranked teachers as distinguished and paying teachers based on their performance on standardized tests, student surveys and administrative observations. The other program, Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE), brought the district’s most distinguished teachers to its most struggling schools to participate in an intense three-year turnaround, and she accepted the challenge of both! She became a Distinguished Teacher while navigating the ACE program at Zumwalt Middle School, a school that was struggling. She rolled up her sleeves and got busy.

Mrs. Mason realized that all students needed was an engaged teacher, and that would change their mindset. With the guidance of her then-principal, Troy Tyson, and an ensemble cast of dedicated teachers, they ensured that Zumwalt was removed from the Improvement Required list within her first year on campus. The number of fights went down drastically because she and her peers used daily structure and tough love.

In the second year of ACE, it was discovered that Zumwalt had a mold problem that was so detrimental, the school needed to be shut down to allow environmentalists to fix it. Zumwalt Middle School was forced to relocate to New Tech High School at A. Maceo Smith, a high school down the street that would share its facilities. Parents, staff and students from both schools were afraid of the move because of the challenge to keep students separate, as well as the different climates and cultures of both schools. Zumwalt was a neighborhood school in one of the poorest, most crime-ridden communities in Dallas. New Tech High School at A. Maceo Smith students, on the other hand, were bussed from across the city, had to apply to attend the school, and were academically sound.

"I opened my doors to Zumwalt in January 2015, and my life changed forever," said Choice. "Although we had many challenges, we did an extremely great job of working together to create an inviting atmosphere for both schools. I watched Mrs. Mason building relationships with students that were incomparable. She was kind to them, but also gave them tough love. She held them accountable, but celebrated every victory with them, as well. Mrs. Mason was the loudest and liveliest teacher in the building, and her passion oozed with every word she said. I had never seen anything like it in my entire career. She was always where she was supposed to be and willing to do the work she knew was needed, whether she was asked or not. The kids loved her, her peers adored her, and I knew I had to get her on my team. I asked Mr. Tyson if I could recruit her in her last year of ACE, and he gave me his blessing."

"I offered Mrs. Mason an Instructional Coach position, and she politely declined saying that she needed to be in the classroom with the students, not the teachers. I offered her the Social Studies Department Chair position teaching Government, and she came aboard," said Choice. "She was excited because she got the job, but even more excited that she would be staying at New Tech at A. Maceo Smith, even when her peers from Zumwalt were beginning to transition back to their own campus! Then I got a call that New Tech would be leaving the A. Maceo Smith building, and we needed to be packed up and ready to move, just like Zumwalt."

"Shareefah immediately jumped into action, assisting with the move and giving me ideas to maintain the climate of the school for students and staff," said Choice. "Throughout the summer, she called, texted and came to the new campus with amazing ideas to make the new school great. I knew I had made a great choice!"

When the doors of New Tech at B.F. Darrell opened, Mrs. Mason was there, front and center, with her same passion and zest. From that day on, she built indescribable relationships with her students, who were seniors. She captivated them with her engaging lessons, motivational talks, and tough love when needed.

"To hear my SENIORS talk about how special she was after weeks of learning made me realize just how special she was," said Choice.

At the end of the first semester, the students took the Assessment of Course Performance, a district-wide test that measures what the students have learned. Mrs. Mason was worried because it was her first time teaching high school and government, and she did not want to fail the students. Not only did she increase the percentage passing from 50 percent the previous year to 70 percent, but she also had almost half of her students pass the test without the district added curve.

"I am in awe of her spirit and love for her students each and every day. She advocates for them, she protects them and she loves them beyond words," said Choice. "Although she spends a lot of time with her students, she is also an amazing mother to her two daughters, aged 14 and 10. She is also an awesome wife to her husband, Dwayne."

Mrs. Mason has written four books on education. She travels across the country to deliver unrivaled presentations at renowned educational conferences such as: Council of Great City Schools, The National Black Male Educators Convening, Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color, Advancing the Improvement of Education and many others. She has won local, state and national awards such as: Campus Teacher of the Year, The Dallas Rotary Club’s Middle School Teacher of the Year, The State of Texas Outstanding American History Teacher and the Dr. William Cotton Scholarship to name a few.

"Shareefah works harder than any teacher I know, with a fidelity and integrity that you just don’t come by anymore. She does so simply because education was the only escape route for her growing up in New Orleans. Students of color need to understand that the route is still there, but they have to be taught exactly how to locate it," said Choice. "Her bonds are truly lifelong. Just the other day, I walked into her classroom to meet a student she taught 11 years ago. She is in constant communication with many of her former students, and they still seek her advice because of the great love and respect they have for her! I could go on and on about the wonderful Shareefah Mason. I just want her to be recognized on a global stage because she has given the forgotten children a global mindset. She is a part of the national legislative policy fellowship, Teach Plus, and she travels across the country sharing her work on Recruiting and Retaining Teachers of Color. She has accomplished in 12 short years what many educators have not done in double the time. Nobody knows her name, and I want people around the world to know how much passion this little lady from NOLA exudes and how the saying 'one woman can change the world,' is true."

Having known Shareefah over twenty-five years, it does not surprise me she is nominated for this award. She has always been a leader who exudes positivity in every situation. She is very relatable and rises to any and every occasion. Although Shareefah has not taught my kids in school, with the passion she has for both kids and teaching she always makes time for impromptu knowledge sharing with them and my kids adore her! She is definitely deserving of this award.

Gina Swanson Posted 2 months ago

I have known Shareefah since high school. She was then and is now a leader in every thing she does. While, I wish she was putting her skills to work with the kids of New Orleans, I am so glad that she is making a difference in Dallas. The kids and the school are better because she is there. She is a change maker. But most importantly her teaching is transformative. She is beyond deserving of this recognition.

She helped shape who I am today! Mrs. Shareefah Mason is a teacher who has dedicated countless hours to the success of all of her students. She has made it a priority that her students grow academically and personally. For example, she never missed a day to my middle school class to let her "see those beautiful faces" and validated me by telling me "you will do great things one day Ms. Ponciano." For seeing me as a students and a person-in-the-making, I am thankful for teachers like Ms. Mason. I have now graduated college and began my graduate studies in psychology. Up until this day I remember the school days in Ms. Mason's classroom where I learned a lot about Texas history and at the same time, grew into a confident and outspoken student. Thank you Ms. Mason for the hard work you do and best of luck!

We must celebrate the teachers who give so much of themselves without expecting anything in return. She continues to go over and beyond in every realm of her profession. She is both an asset and a blessing to everyone who comes into contact with her.

Nikolas Davis Posted 3 months ago

Mrs. Mason is one of the greatest teachers I've had. Her style of teaching is like no other. She has the ability to help you where you're at, but also not budge on just giving out answers/grades. This is something that I can greatly appreciate and will not take for granted. Mrs. Mason is a effective communicator, there is never a shadow of doubt in my mind about anything she says because it is crystal clear. I know that my teacher, Mrs. Mason is deserving of this award because of her passion to see the best in students even they can't see the best in themselves and ultimately mold future leaders and future educators.

Shavonn Stearns Posted 3 months ago

Mrs. Mason is well deserving of all the awards and accolades that she has received and still striving for. Her commitment, dedication and resilience for her students, co-workers, and community is above and beyond the call of duty. She exudes excellence in all that she does, because only the best is good enough for all of the individuals she touches on a daily basis. I've known Mrs. Mason for 12 years, my entire teaching career. And the knowledge she has bestowed upon me has been invaluable. The encouragement and support she gives to each student, parent, co-worker and community leaders is amazing! On top of all that, she is a wonderful mother to two brilliant young ladies. I'm grateful to call Mrs. Mason a friend, whom continues to trailblaze through this journey called life.

Nancy Daniels l Posted 3 months ago

It's always amazed me that, with all she has on her to-do list, Mrs. Mason will always manage to squeeze in time to support others. I met her on the job almost 20 years ago, before she answered her calling to be an educator. She trained me on everything I needed to excel in the workplace, and I've enjoyed watching her guide her peers to excellence ever since. Whether she's hands on helping with lesson plans, or writing a book (yes, she's an author) to provide other educators with techniques for prosperity in the classroom, she always makes herself available to assist others. Being that she is very dedicated & extremely patient, it's no surprise that this natural born leader is so inspiring to her students and peers. Everyone she encounters is encouraged by her positivity and passion. I've watched her show her pupils by example and instruction to reach beyond what they think their potential is to achieve success. I should also mention that her former students are regularly blessed by her acts of kindness beyond the classroom. She's done everything from helping to search for scholarships to finding underprivileged students attire for formal events or job interviews...she has even helped locate housing for a new college student in a pinch. Mrs. Shareefah Mason is most deserving of this honor. Daily she manages to take on all the tasks of her professional life, still be a doting mommy to her two angels, a devoted wife, and make it all look effortless. And she genuinely does all of this with love in her heart. Now is time for her to get a little of that love back. Shareefah, congratulations on your nomination! I cannot wait until you are awarded LifeChanger of 2018-2019!

Words can’t even express the impact Mrs. Mason had on my life. I remember my 8th grade year at Boude Storey and if anybody went to that school knows class of 2014. She made that year very memorable for us from the educational stance to all the life lessons in between. She showed us what it means to take education to another level so that everyone can engage and get the knowledge that they need. I wish nothing but an abundance of success and more and more positive doors to open up for you Mrs.Mason you deserve it all and more.

I have worked with many teachers throughout my life, but she is one of the teachers that ALWAYS kept me engaged during class. She always explains her topics clearly and never hesitates to re-explain if my classmates and I don't understand. Every step during senior year, she always believed in my class including myself, even if times were tough. Thanks to her, I have acquired new knowledge during class and I always know I have is a #1 supporter by my side, helping me no matter how tough the problem is. Overall, she is one of the greatest supporters I have the pleasure of having as my teacher. All I can say is, when she teaches you, you never look at her the same way again.

Saidah Mason (daughter) Posted 3 months ago

My mother Shareefah Nadir-Mason deserves this award more than anyone one else! My mom works so hard everyday she stays at school until at least 8:00pm trying to find other ways to engage her students. My mom is a life changer at work and at home everyday! She gives her all trying to teach her husband(my father), sister, and myself. Everyone appreciates my mother and what she does for her community. She has never competed with her co-workers but has strived to help them. She engages her students in very creative ways that can help them not be asleep but up working. Her strategy P.U.L.L. is so famous in her career and her students never use any other strategies. My mom cares about all races no matter your background she cares. She's double the educator she's a teacher and a mother. Nobody fits this award like my mother and no matter what she strives for excellence nothing less. I love the LifeChanger of the Year award because it showcases the talent for everyone and my mom has the talent you want. My mother is very educated and is the life changer you are looking for. Don't know who to pick she's in your view my mother is ready at all times and we are ready for you!!!

The lovely Mrs Mason was my 7th grade teacher at Boude Storey Middle School (06-07). I loved how she taught Social Studies. Ive never cared for that subject at all until I graduated to Middle School. She was that teacher who was down to earth and relatable. She was that teacher who class you didn’t want to leave. Mrs Mason definitely became my favorite teacher. I remember I use to skip my lunch just to hang out in her class and help out with whatever she needed. She was that person you could talk to when you needed somebody. She could also make you laugh New Orleans accent and all. Mrs Mason was that teacher you had to go back & give a High school graduation ticket too..because you wanted her to be proud to see you flourish for she was definitely apart of helping you grow to be great . That’s why I believe she’s a Life Changer. For she is forever changing lives. generation after generation. Love You Mrs Mason! It’s a honor to be a student of yours. ??

I met Mrs. Mason when I attended Boude Story Middle School in 2007, she was my history teacher for two years and what I can say about this women she is a loving, caring and also a beautiful person inside and out. She made sure that her students learned everything that we needed to know while making it fun as well, and even if she had to show a little tough love to make us get it and understand she did that to, and not that she was a wonderful teacher she also was a great mentor to. She made a big impact on my life as well as other students, and will always come with open arms as well if we needed her to! And for that I will always have a special place in my heart for this wonderful woman. I LOVE YOU MRS. MASON! CONGRATULATIONS! YOU DESERVE IT!

I can't really say I knew Ms. Mason for a long time but in the shortest moments that I've known her she has become one of my favorite educators throughout my senior years. Her upright and social determination personality is something that pushes her beyond that of others. Rather than wanting to see her self succeed her main goal has been to see each one of her students come out on top, through moments of life changing opportunities she had provided us, from being able to participate in a project to help reconstruct a local park in our area to inspiring us to make our voices heard to a political output and through a personal level I couldn't think of any one better suited from this position than Ms. Mason.

Armando Duran Posted 3 months ago

We got off on the wrong foot, we even hated one another, but we both got to know each other and now we are pretty cool. She is one of the more down to earth teachers and compared to what kind of teachers I have now, that is something I can't say for many. She is one that shows she cares rather than simply brush off her students as "students" . If there is one person who is definitely worth going to for anything it is her. She is pretty cool I guess.

Mrs. Mason's tenacity, vigor and true love for what she does is visible on a daily basis, in all that she does and say. The students adore her and the staff love and respect her. And as a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, where "Sisterhood", "Service" and "Scholarship" are the main principles of the Sorority, it is an extreme pleasure and delight for me to recognize Mrs. Mason as my sorority sister. Three main principles of of being a "Finer Woman of Zeta" are "Sisterhood", "Service" and "Scholarship". Mrs. Mason effortlessly exemplifies, motivates and promotes each principle daily. Not only is she the best teacher but the best supporter. When I was down and didn’t have the motivation to do anything she was there cheering for me to keep going and put my best foot forward and it worked. The best aspect about Mrs. Mason is the fact that she has your back in and out the classroom. She establishes that it’s okay to talk to your teacher if you need to and not feel ashamed about it. Not only is she a great supporter but a great listener and I believe that that is how she establishes real world connections with her students. Shareefah Mason is the most charismatic teacher I have ever been around. I admire her character and the way she gets things done no matter the cost. I remember this particular instance in where we were having a small argument in Student Council. She got us all together and told us about the different types of people in life. The doers which get the tasks completed and the others who constantly complain and try to bring others down. She asked us which person did we want to be in life? From that moment, I knew the only way I would be able to achieve my goals was to become a doer. She changed me for the better because I took that advice and made that the reason I wake up every day to work hard and make a name for myself. No matter the situation, the cost, or the instance, I’m going to complete my objectives thanks to Ms.Mason.

Mrs. Mason's academic and educational record speaks for itself; However, her dedication toward reaching the hearts of her students is what's at an exemplary level. She has high expectations for all of her students and these expectations stem outside of her classroom. She challenges students to learn about their own personal heritage. In doing so, the students gain an understanding about who they are. The philosophy is that the students work toward fostering a standard of excellence in all that they do. Moreover, she constantly connects with students to ensure they are living up to who they say they are and who they can be. As educators, we're tasked of teaching the whole child and Mrs. Mason has mastered the art of promulgating these characteristics. Her drive and determination for excellence is an example by which other educators and people should follow.

Mrs. Shareefah Mason is an outstanding teacher. I have never met an instructor that has wanted to teach and inspire young students the way Mrs. Mason does. She goes out of her way to lead young people to greatness and makes sure everyone is getting what they need. Educating students is one of many attributes Mrs. Mason carries. She is an intelligent, funny, and inspiring woman. Thank you, Mrs. Mason, for inspiring the class of 2019 and being the example we need! You deserve this title.

Marcie Davis Posted 3 months ago

Shareefah Mason is one of the best, if not the best, educators I have ever known. We taught together for 8 years. The way she connected current events and ideas to Social Studies curriculum was more than impressive! However, the way she connected with her students was more than human. I always asked her if she had more hours of the day than the rest of us. I never understood how she managed to provide the best social studies instruction I’ve ever seen, lead the department, participate in extra curriucular activities, make up plays and dance rountines for our school’s shows, go to outside of school events for the students, successfully tutor/coach in subjects that she has not officially taught, write books, present at national conferences, and maintain a prospering home... at the same time! This woman is a superhero!!! This woman is a life changer!!!

Shareefah Mason is the Lifechanger of the Year! It isn’t often God puts a soul on this earth with so much passion about Education. Shareefah exudes education in everything she does and deserves this recognition recognition.

Rashima Posted 3 months ago

I have known Mrs. Mason for over 20 years. She has always been a leader and what many may call “a villager.” As the old saying goes, “it takes a village” and Mrs. Mason has always been supportive and encouraging. Those same qualities (as well as others) have helped her to be the educator that she is. It is always a blessing to see the growth of someone over the years and I am happy that we have remained connected. Many blessings to you Shareefah!!!

Travis Blackwell Posted 3 months ago

You deserve all the recognition and blessings that come your way! I know you put in the time and effort to ensuring those kids having all the tools necessary to succeed. If only we had more like you leading the way the world would be much better. Leadership, discipline, and love are a few of the many great qualities you embody. I can’t think of anyone else more deserving of this award than you!

Rafael Trejo Posted 3 months ago

Mrs. Mason is definitely an amazing example of what I wish my kids teachers would be like. She will make sure everyone in the class is participating and will break that ice for you! She does an unbelievable job as a teacher. I remembered getting excited walking into her 7th period class back in 06-07 at Boude Storey Middle School. She would make sure the class was having fun and learning at the same time! I can think of many memories laughing, joking and most importantly learning all at once. Learning had never been so much fun. She also changed my negative thoughts in growing up in such a poor neighborhood making me believe I can still achieve and become successful one day. I now am a landlord, I own 3 rental properties, I am attending college to pursue my business degree and will continue to achieve due to the teacher that one day changed my way of thinking forever. Thank you Mrs. Mason!

Elizabeth Trejo Posted 3 months ago

Ms. Mason was my 8th grade teacher in 2009, not only was she an amazing educator but also a friend you could confide in. She knew when something was wrong with you, and was always willing to help you feel better. Ms. Mason could put a smile on your face even if you walked in her class having a bad day. She had a way of making lessons fun and keeping us engaged. I remember being in elementary when my older brother would talk about his new teacher that came from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He loved her so much. I never knew how a kid could be so excited about going to a class until I was fortunate enough to have her as my history teacher as well. Ms. Mason deserves to be recognized for her excellence and compassion. She goes above and beyond for her students, she has such a big heart and makes sure we know we can achieve anything. She keeps in touch with all her students and continues to motivate and cheer us on even now in our adulthood. I nominate Ms. Mason for Life Changer Of The Year for being a superb teacher and changing the life of her students through education and love.

Candice Cofer Posted 3 months ago

Having worked with Mason for three years, I have come to know her as a friend. She definitely pushed me in ways that made me a better teacher and made me look at things from a different perspective. Of course the kids adored her. She established bonds with kids that I know will last a lifetime. She has a heart for uplifting kids beyond their circumstance and environment. Together along with another colleague, we started a program to increase parent parcipation and it took off like a spark. Parent involvement increased by 80% and it took our campus to another level. She is very innovative but knows how to pull together the talents of her colleague so that it is most effective in helping and engaging kids. She has definitely changed many lives for the better.

Shareefah deserves this and plenty more. Not only is she this was with her student but even outside of school she shows the same exact love. Our daughters went to PreK together and has been best friends since. She is like another mother to my child and I thank her for that. She treats and gives my child the same attention that she gives hers. I love her and truly wish nothing but success for her. If I have ever needed someone to talk to I can call and talk to her. Trying to help children succeed in life is her passion. Keep doing a great job in what you believe!

Mrs Mason has been a dear friend of mine for over 25 years strong. She's always been an amazing person. Extremely intelligent yet so humble and down to earth. We were a couple years apart so she was the big sister of our community. She was always someone you could talk to in a judgment free climate. I see that same spirit with the way she interacts with her students. I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of a life changer award being as though she's been doing this her entire life.

Mrs.Mason is a wonderful teacher. When I attended Boude Storey I wasn’t her student but she most definitely treated me as such. When I went to South Oak Cliff High School she was there my freshman year and she was there for all of my classmates if we needed her. She supported me and my cousin in whatever we did. Mrs. Mason still encourages me to continue to do well in college and tells me how proud she is of me. I love Mrs. Mason!!??

Shareefah has been a part of my world for more than 25 years. To watch her grow into Super Encouraging woman is not a surprise but awesome to watch. As an upperclassman schoolmate in high school, I looked up to her...she didn't let us put our heads down and give up. She always had something positive to say and would make you laugh! She still to this day, encourage us, her way, through positive comments on our post, sharing words of encouragement and supporting our endeavors. It's great to see her nominated again this year! I may not watch her in action in her current position, but I have no doubt that she is helping to positively mold and change the lives of her Seniors!! I strongly believe that she deserves this award!

Throughout my years in school, I have never met a teacher who engages and cares for their students as much as Mrs. Mason. She has been the only teacher thus far that shows their students how to be held accountable for their actions. Not only do I admire her, but I also appreciate the things she tells us because it opens our eyes and minds up. She talks about the reality of things and what we can do to change it. All while STILL staying on top of her work to make sure we're successful. She mentors every single one of her students in a special way and encourages us to give back to our community so we can produce a change for those who need it. I am very fond of Mrs. Mason and hope to be able to watch her achieve everything she has planned and more! that including, watching her receive this award that she deserves so much.

I have not had the privilege of working with Mrs. Mason in the classroom, but I have witnessed her interact with her students on several occasions and it is extremely obvious that she loves teaching. She has a true connection with her students and she pours into them in more areas than just academics. She understands that her "job" does not end when the bell rings at the end of the day. She not only teaches, mentors and pours into her own students, but also does the same to her daughters friends, my daughters included. The conversations she has with these young ladies and the things that she teaches them will affect them for the rest of their lives. Her passion and love for helping and teaching others extends beyond her school and home as well. She works with non-profit organizations by teaching and pouring into others, as well as works on other projects to help better the community. I am a witness to the fact that everything she does, she does it with excellence, enthusiasm and with so much passion. To say that Mrs. Mason is a life-changer, would be a huge understatement. If I could think of anyone that would be deserving of this award, it would be her.

I've witnessed Mrs.Mason go the extra mile time & time again on behalf of her students. As a staunch advocate for student academic succes, Mrs Mason works tirelessly in the classroom. I'm a former colleague and we worked at one of the toughest schools in the area. When Mrs Mason says "success is not determined by your address" she means it. Her students were not let off the hook in fact, they rose to the expectations she created in the classroom.I can genuinely say she works hard in the name of student advancement.

There is no one more deserving of this title than Ms. Mason. She embodies what a teacher should be holistically. Ms. Mason is kind, compassionate yet holds her students to high expectations both academically and as leaders of tomorrow. She believes in her students and in turn they thus believe in themselves. She upholds the concept of restorative discipline and makes a concerted effort to maintain constructive relationships with all students, not just the ones she directly teaches. She is indeed a transformative figure both inside and outside the classroom.

I met Mrs. Mason in college when she was known as Shareefah Nadir. We were only acquaintances for a while. However, when we took the time to get to know each other, we became great friends. We laughed and cried together. We shared secrets with one another and developed an unbreakable bond. She persevered through many ups and downs with her head held high. It was then, I knew she was destined for great things. So I’m not surprised at all at the accolades, awards, or accomplishments she has garnered thus far. It is a rarity to find a teacher who teaches with passion, love, and who truly believes that each student matters, but I know each student has found that in Mrs. Mason. Congratulations on your nomination my friend. You deserve that and more!

I have only known Mrs. Mason since the beginning of my senior year but it feels like I've known her for more than that. I admire Mrs.Mason if I'm being honest. The way she cares for every single person who is in front of her truly shows who she is. The way she connects with students and builds relationships with them to get to know them better truly shows how amazing her heart is. I have never felt more acknowledge by a teacher until she came around. She makes sure that every student knows they have potential and motivates us to show the best in us. Because of Mrs.Mason I even considered at one point to become a teacher myself due to the way she cares about her students and makes sure they don't get left behind in anything that they won't understand. I truly believe Mrs. Mason deserves to receive this life changer of the year award because she is the true meaning of a life changer. Thank you Mrs. Mason for everything you have done, we love you.

I met Mrs. Mason five years ago while working a summer school program. Her conversation is always about increasing student achievement and improving the quality of instruction. I watched her build special relationships with teachers and students all summer. She has a natural ability to forge relationships with even the most challenging students. One does not have to be around Mrs. Mason long, to hear and witness her passion for educating all students, and systemic changes that could improve this process. She was truly born to do this work. She is an irreplaceable asset to her campus and our district.

Courtney Cross-Johnson Posted 3 months ago

It's hard for me to write this without choking up a bit, but when I think about the epitome of a teacher, I think about Mrs. Shareefah Nadir-Mason. Although I think I'm a pretty spirited person, Mason has me beat, period. We worked together for a little over 2 years at Zumwalt Middle School as a part of the ACE program, and we would NOT have been able to accomplish all that we did had she not been a member of that team. Even though Mrs. Mason was the 8th grade teacher at the time, if you ever had to transition by her room, you became her student. When I think about Mason, the words "influential", "tenacious", "determined", "ZEALOUS", "loving", and "unconquerable soul" all come to mind. Being a content master is excellent, which she is, but she is way more than that. She has a gift of reaching -ALL- students, as as a former Instructional Coach, that's the type of teacher you dream about having all throughout your campus. Students feel comfortable talking to her about academics and their personal lives, which is vital given some of the challenges our scholars faced. I can only imagine the stellar work that she is doing as a high school teacher now, but I have no doubts that Mrs. Mason's former students still think about and contact her. If you have ever had the pleasure of having her as a teacher, it's likely that she molded your life in some manner, and for that reason it is with high enthusiasm I support Shareefah Nadir-Mason as the Lifechanger of the Year.

Eyanna Allen Posted 3 months ago

This is the PERFECT award for Mrs.Mason not only is she a phenomenal teacher inside the classroom. She exemplifies great qualities as a person, I can't count on one hand how many times she has helped me with scholarships, or given me advice, and she even put me on to her book. Mrs. Mason is definitely a LIFE CHANGER my senior year wouldn't be great without her. She is funny, a motivator, and her presence is soothing but she is ALL about teaching and making sure we make good grades. If your grades are not right, she will be the first one to let you know, she believes in you and want you to be successful. I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER!!!!

Mario Scroggins Posted 3 months ago
