Music that Describes Curtis

Curtis Jenkins was nominated anonymously.

It is sometimes hard to love your job as a bus driver; driving for countless hours through all types of weather with loud children in the back. That is why Curtis Jenkins stands out from all the rest. He is not only a bus driver to the children, but a part of their family.

Instead of treating his bus route like merely a bus route, he creates a little community. He gives all of his students a responsibility and job to do for the short times they are on the bus. He establishes police officers, presidents, administrative assistants, and countless other positions so everyone is included and feels important.

Mr. Jenkins takes the time to get to know each and every one of his students. He remembers what they are passionate about and helps keep them passionate about it. In one instance, he created a t-shirt with a picture of a book one of his students had created on it, hoping that she will look at it and be inspired to write more books. Throughout his years as a bus driver, Mr. Jenkins has given out all sorts of gifts to his students; bikes, backpacks, books, cards, food, anything to see them happy and excited.

Mr. Jenkins' title may only be bus driver, but his job is making his children smile daily, and that is why he is a LifeChanger.

Eva Wallace Posted 2 months ago

The privilege of seeing the positivism that Curtis Jenkins brings to his moments with the children is over-whelming. He is the inspiration for children to feel good about their school days and themselves. In a world of challenges to even make it safely to school because of the suffering neighborhoods from which his precious and precocious little riders come, Curtis continually helps the kids know that they are individually important to him, an adult, and he cares about each of them. How rare a positive presence in so many kids' lives is a personal cheerleader and life guide as is Curtis to his kids! Role model? 100%. He is the uncle, father, mentor that many kids don't have in their lives. Teaching them leadership skills and character, he's preparing them for life. I celebrate Curtis Jenkins for his sincerity, his dedication, and his HUGE heart for kids. He's a life force and he's authentic. RISD is lucky, lucky to have him driving his kids---driving them to success and growth in life.

The world needs more people like Curtis Jenkins. His light is far reaching. He touches lives in ways that go far past his routes. The staff and students that Curtis encounters are blessed to have them in their lives. Every interaction leaves a positive deposit. The things he dies for kids is driven by his innate desire to serve and make a difference in the lives of children. He genuinely cares for them. He is pouring into his kids, but they too, fill his bucket. He has established a true community and family with his kids and kids remember him and his impact, even when thay are long gone from his big yellow bus

One of the keynote speakers showed a short clip of his story from CBS News and we were all wowed! I immediately took to social media to find him to see if he would be willing to video chat with the attendees of the conference (about 300). When I messaged Curtis on Facebook, he immediately responded that he would love to speak with us! When we were able to connect, he continued to inspire us with his message of kindness and compassion. Mr. Jenkins is a truly remarkable man who changes the lives of every child he’s associated with by treating them with the dignity and respect each of them needs, and he does so by getting to know each one personally. He lives and breathes these qualities himself and shares those qualities with children and adults as well!

Curtis Jenkins devotes so much to the kids he drives on his bus. The students come off of his bus with smiles. They are so excited to go to school. They take pride in themselves and their work. Curtis plays a huge part in this. I am proud to know him.

I have either taught the students on Mr. Curtis’ bus, have taught or will teach them. I can say from first hand knowledge that being in the trenches comes with its good days and bad days. You take on their struggles and celebrate the good with them. Mr. Curtis leaves a piece of his heart with each student. My kids love him and look to him as a role model. We love Mr. Curtis.

Curtis is an excellent example of kindness. He leads our students to become leaders, work hard and believe in themselves. His impact in our school is unmeasurable. Thank you sir for helping us teach kids in and out of the classroom.

I see Curtis every morning outside of my classroom window with his “family” of students. He encourages, inspires, and lifts them up! What an amazing man! Thank you Curtis!
