Music that Describes Sherita
Sherita Harmon was nominated by an anonymous family member.
Mrs. Harmon is dedicated to her students, colleagues, and the community. She is an exceptional example of a true educator. Mrs. Harmon has a passion that goes beyond the limits most people place on themselves. She goes above and beyond the call of duty as a teacher, not only by preparing her students academically, but by teaching them life skills.
Beyond teaching, she and a colleague have provided Dream Prom experiences for several of her students. She and one of her colleagues have hosted prom dress giveaways. She has fed students. Because she is so observant, she knows when people are not their usual selves. Therefore, she is able to acknowledge when something might be wrong with one of her students and communicate with them. She even takes the time to acknowledge their birthdays and special occasions.
Mrs. Harmon takes great pride in her role as a teacher, philanthropist, mentor, and role model. She carries herself with grace and dignity, always looking for ways to make a difference. Mrs. Harmon is big on the small things because sometimes, they make the most impact.
Mrs. Harmon relocated to Houston, TX in 2007 and got married in 2008. It was as if a whirlwind had blown, and Mrs. Harmon's passion was manifested even greater. She came up with an idea to feed the homeless and do something to assist in making a greater difference. Mrs. Harmon is the founder of a non-profit organization, Blessed to Be a Blessing, where she sponsors various events throughout the year to aid in feeding and giving back to those less fortunate, such as sponsoring Valentine's, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day activities and meals.
"I was granted the opportunity to participate in one of her events and found everything to be well organized, timely, and fun," said her nominator. "Most importantly, I repeatedly heard appreciation from all that came out to be a part of the festivities."
Mrs. Harmon later founded H.U.G.S. (Helping Underserved Girls Succeed). This is a mentoring program where she works with girls aged 15-18 in their personal growth and building their confidence and self-worth.
During the 2018-2019 school year, Mrs. Harmon was nominated for Teacher of the Year at her campus. She came in as runner up. Beyond her role, she is also involved in Professional Development in her school district. She is one of many Professional Development presenters, and she absolutely loves having the opportunity to help her colleagues learn and grow.
Mrs. Harmon goes above and beyond in the classroom by practicing what she preaches. Over the course of her teaching career, she has done many wonderful things that extend beyond her job duties, such as creating a pantry in her classroom because a student confided in her that she did not always have food at home. Her latest act of going above and beyond was purchasing toiletries for a student who need some personal hygiene supplies. This came about after an in-class discussion on the importance of personal hygiene. After class, a student quietly came up to Mrs. Harmon to ask for assistance. The next day, Mrs. Harmon presented the student with what they needed.
"I know for a fact that Sherita shows love by words and deeds, not only to her students, but to everyone that she encounters. She has displayed loyalty in her mission to reach out and make a difference in her community," said her nominator. "Despite being busy as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Sherita remains faithful in her endeavors and does so with dignity and respect towards all she encounters. Her support base of sister-girls speaks volumes of others belief in what she is doing. I personally believe her attributes to her community go beyond a call of duty; it is a calling, and it is her passion."
