Music that Describes Sherita

Sherita Harmon was nominated by an anonymous family member.

Mrs. Harmon is dedicated to her students, colleagues, and the community. She is an exceptional example of a true educator.  Mrs. Harmon has a passion that goes beyond the limits most people place on themselves.  She goes above and beyond the call of duty as a teacher, not only by preparing her students academically, but by teaching them life skills.

Beyond teaching, she and a colleague have provided Dream Prom experiences for several of her students.  She and one of her colleagues have hosted prom dress giveaways.  She has fed students. Because she is so observant, she knows when people are not their usual selves.  Therefore, she is able to acknowledge when something might be wrong with one of her students and communicate with them.  She even takes the time to acknowledge their birthdays and special occasions.

Mrs. Harmon takes great pride in her role as a teacher, philanthropist, mentor, and role model. She carries herself with grace and dignity, always looking for ways to make a difference. Mrs. Harmon is big on the small things because sometimes, they make the most impact.

Mrs. Harmon relocated to Houston, TX in 2007 and got married in 2008.  It was as if a whirlwind had blown, and Mrs. Harmon's passion was manifested even greater. She came up with an idea to feed the homeless and do something to assist in making a greater difference. Mrs. Harmon is the founder of a non-profit organization, Blessed to Be a Blessing, where she sponsors various events throughout the year to aid in feeding and giving back to those less fortunate, such as sponsoring Valentine's, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day activities and meals.

"I was granted the opportunity to participate in one of her events and found everything to be well organized, timely, and fun," said her nominator. "Most importantly, I repeatedly heard appreciation from all that came out to be a part of the festivities."

Mrs. Harmon later founded H.U.G.S. (Helping Underserved Girls Succeed). This is a mentoring program where she works with girls aged 15-18 in their personal growth and building their confidence and self-worth.

During the 2018-2019 school year, Mrs. Harmon was nominated for Teacher of the Year at her campus.  She came in as runner up.  Beyond her role, she is also involved in Professional Development in her school district.  She is one of many Professional Development presenters, and she absolutely loves having the opportunity to help her colleagues learn and grow.

Mrs. Harmon goes above and beyond in the classroom by practicing what she preaches. Over the course of her teaching career, she has done many wonderful things that extend beyond her job duties, such as creating a pantry in her classroom because a student confided in her that she did not always have food at home.  Her latest act of going above and beyond was purchasing toiletries for a student who need some personal hygiene supplies.  This came about after an in-class discussion on the importance of personal hygiene.  After class, a student quietly came up to Mrs. Harmon to ask for assistance.  The next day, Mrs. Harmon presented the student with what they needed.

"I know for a fact that Sherita shows love by words and deeds, not only to her students, but to everyone that she encounters. She has displayed loyalty in her mission to reach out and make a difference in her community," said her nominator. "Despite being busy as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Sherita remains faithful in her endeavors and does so with dignity and respect towards all she encounters.  Her support base of sister-girls speaks volumes of others belief in what she is doing.  I personally believe her attributes to her community go beyond a call of duty; it is a calling, and it is her passion."

I can’t think of anybody who deserves this award more then mrs. Harmon. I couldn’t afford to go to prom and i wasn’t going to go. I had already decided i wasn’t going to go and mrs. Harmon and mrs. Spriggs they bought my prom ticket, my dress, got my hair and makeup professionally done. They made my experience in high school so amazing for everything they did for me. I’ll always remember them and love them because they did for me what i couldn’t do for myself. And she was here for me when i didn’t think i had anybody in my corner. I’ll love her and her family forever because i wouldn’t be where i am today with out her.

By the end of this year I will have known Mrs. Harmon for 3 years now. Mrs. Harmon is my mother away from home, honestly. She is of course a mother, but she doesn’t limit that love to her children, it is definitely spread to everyone she comes in contact with. It’s as if she can’t help herself. I was privileged to be one of the first members of her new H.U.G.S. program and I have learned so much from it. It’s such an amazing opportunity to seek guidance and advice from women who just want to help young girls throughout their teen years and we need it now more than ever. I remember walking into the first meeting and seeing how excited she was. All the tables were decorated in pink and the H.U.G.S. logo showered the room! Activities were laid out for us to do and our mentors were ready for us to meet and greet! Anyone who walked into that room could feel the love and security that Mrs. Harmon provided into this program and it’s just so amazing. This comment is going to be long but I don’t care! As stated in the article above, Mrs. Harmon is very observant, she can always tell when you aren’t yourself and she won’t hesitate to let you know that she is there for you and is willing to help. That’s what I love the most about her, besides her contagious energy. She is funny, sweet, and a great teacher! It was an honor to know her and I am going to miss her dearly when I graduate. I couldn’t possibly think of a better candidate for this award. Mrs. Harmon truly changed my life.

Wow, what can I say about Mrs. Sherita Harmon?? We met over 30 years ago in grade school and she has always been a bright person in any space. She gives selflessly to her community and supports her family and friends. She is always thinking of new ways to serve others and often rallies her peers to help as well. She pours her gifts into the next generation of girls through volunteer service and shares her heart with the students she teaches. She is definitely a life changer and has earned that title and more!

Brenda Avworo Posted 2 months ago

I had the privilege of having Mrs Harmon as my teacher for 2 years in high school. She was my favorite teacher because she was so happy and she made these quirky jokes that always turned my bad days into good ones. She knew when to step in and give words of encouragement, even while she was pregnant. No matter what, she makes you feel like you can do anything, which is a great step from the average teacher. There is no doubt in my mind that Mrs Harmon exemplifies the life changer of the year!

Tracee Turner Posted 2 months ago

Mrs. Harmon is an amazing person. She makes everyone feel like they can do anything. She is an important member of our professional development team and is always the recipient of high praise in feedback from the participants. She is always looking for ways to learn more so she can share more. She is the model of a life-long learner who implements what she learns. I loved reading the other posts and learning more about her. Her philosophy of taking care of the small details agrees with what I have learned. Take of the small things and the big things will fall magically into place. Her energy is contagious and that energy truly can CHANGE your life.

Sherita is an Angel sent from heaven to spread her compassionate heart with all those within her reach at the right moment in time. Her Heart is filled with love, giving, sharing, support, guidance, mentoring, assisting and teaching. Sherita’s care goes far and beyond the scope of human kindness and care . Ask me how do I know ??? Because she has proven to me over and over to be that Angel from Heaven.

Lacretia Posted 2 months ago

Where do I start...I met Sherita about 9 years ago at an event that we both were volunteers along with her husband who was one of the professional athletes there who to was a volunteer working with children in the Houston area; from that day on we have been connected. I would listen to Sherita as she spoke about her vision and ideas of what she wanted to do for the community and watched her implement them. Sherita has always been a philanthropist; her drive and motivation to help adults and children unselfishly has been motivation to so many to want to go out help and do the same. My final words to Sherita is for her to know that her unconditional love for her community is an inspiration to not only the people that she works with and helps but to me and my daughter as well. We love you and will continue to support you as you flourish in your purpose.
