Dr. Tanaucha Lewis was nominated by Krystal Cormack, the parent of a student.

Dr. Lewis epitomizes what it means to be a LifeChanger. Dr. Lewis supports the most challenging students in her school, children who have emotional challenges, behavioral disabilities, and special mental health needs.

"As an educator myself, I didn't know people like Dr. Lewis existed," said Cormack. "She has the ability to build relationships with both students and adults. She strives toward ambitious outcomes, so that students are able to maximize their potential and lead lives of opportunity and joy. Dr. Lewis has both a skill and a gift in working with children, teachers and families when it comes to supporting children with emotional disabilities."

Dr. Lewis holds children and adults to high expectations and pushes both groups when necessary. She uses data to drive her supports and is able to masterfully shape the conversations in her school toward a growth mindset. Dr. Lewis provides students, teachers and families with a sense of hope about the future of the children she serves.

"As the parent of one of the children she serves, I never thought I would see the day when my child would look forward to going to school," said Cormack. "Dr. Lewis understands what it takes to motivate young children and encourage them to be the best version of themselves. She remembered my child's birthday and had a gift prepared for him, even though his birth day was on the first day of school. I am continually in awe of the progress my son is making through his work with Dr. Lewis. She helps children see the potential within themselves by setting short, then longer stretch goals for them to achieve. She anticipates challenges, understands each child as an individual, and sees them beyond the boundaries of their disability. I want Dr. Lewis to understand the difference she has made for my son and other students like him. If it weren't for the work she is doing, my child might not want to go to school each day, and certainly wouldn't be thriving in the way that he is now."

I met Dr. Lewis, or Tanaucha as she is affectionately known to me, while pursuing my doctoral degree. She was one of my biggest supporters always cheering me on and pushing me. Upon her completion, one of the first things she did was reach out and ask me “what can I do to help”...that has always meant the world to me. I’ve watched her and listen to her speak passionately of her love for children, her love for people; and in a world like today, that is much needed. When I heard she had been nominated for this award I wasn’t surprised at all. I honestly cannot think of anyone more deserving. I have to admit that I read through some of the other comments and they all confirm what I know and believe Dr. Lewis to be. So congratulations hunni, you’ve already won!!! ??

Dr. Lewis is a bright spot in Casey's day.. She is a true advocate for her children and their special selves. As the principal, I tend to look at the big picture. Dr. Lewis balances me by never letting me forget that the big picture is made up of 400 individual students, and each one is Number One!

Dr. Tanaucha Lewis, Dr. Lewis or Tanaucha, it does not matter how this this LIFECHANGER of the year candidate is addressed, her commitment to serve remains the same. I met Dr. Lewis as a nontraditional student in the doctoral program. Her loving personality, respectful behavior, belaboring services has been demonstrated many times during the process of researching, writing and preparation for defending our dissertation. Dr. Lewis is a natural researcher and has impeccable writing skills. Dr. Lewis is long suffering. When I first met Dr. Lewis, she completed most of her assignment on her cell phone, because of her loving dedication to ensure that her son had everything he needed, she decided not to replace her computer until his academic needs were secured. That decision alone speaks volumes for a young mother who not only help others but takes care of home as well. Although I choose to include her dedication to her students last, it is by no means to say it’s the least in her commitment to serve. I have listen to her express that her primary goals for every child is to master academic concepts & behavior issues that will give that child the opportunity to move back into the mainstream and matriculates through life successful. It is my opinion that if anyone deserves to be recognized & rewarded as LIFECHANGER of the year, Dr. Tanaucha Lewis is that person.

Congratulations Dr. Lewis!! A most worthy and deserving nominee and prayerfully, recieptant of the LifeChanger of the Year Award. Such a humble and aweinspiring person with a heart even bigger than the infectious smile you exhibits each time one meets you.. As a former educator, I know what is required to meet students at their level, and give all you have to help them reach their highest potential. It is a task only accomplished by persons like you Dr. Lewis. Your heart MUST be in it! Good teachers are made in heaven and are born to teach. It's like the story of little boy who tore open a lightning bug trying to see where the light was coming from. After which he replied, "The stuff (the light) is in him!" I can say with pride and confidence, Dr. Lewis has the "stuff" inside her that makes her such an effective and infectious teacher. These qualities alone define Lifechangers. Dr. Tanaucha Lewis is changing lives on a daily basis and is so worthy of this nomination. I highly recommend and congratulate you Dr. Lewis! To God Be the Glory!??

Dr. Lewis is one of the most genuine, loving individuals that I have encountered during my collegiate pursuit. Not really sure how we met but I can remember that she and I enjoyed our doctoral journey together. More importantly, when her journey ended, she called me to encourage me and ask what can she do to help me meet my goal. She insisted that I finish because she knew that we both were destined for greatness. It’s extremely hard to pursue an education while managing life but Dr. Lewis and I have supported each when life has presented us with challenges. She and I have prayed for each other, our families and most of all our children. I know that she is my prayer warrior because anytime that I need words of comfort or just someone to pray for me she has been right there. I sincerely admire her for loving spirit and generous heart. She is truly worthy of being celebrated for her heart of giving.

I am so proud that she is still willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that the Family and Chicken received what is needed to maintain together.

Brenda Manyfield Williams Posted 9 months ago

We lovingly call her TT. She has an infectious smile that defines her beautiful character. As an older cousin. I've watched her blossom like a flower that grows between cement slabs on a sidewalk. Life has dealt her some obstacles, but she was born overcoming adversities. As a premie she overcame predicted health issues and with the help of her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Rosie Walton, and her parents, she developed into a healthy, vibrant and intellectual young lady. I'm so proud of you Dr. Lewis, but youll always be my precious little cousin. I love you dearly. Please keep being a blessing to the precious children you serve. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST BLESS YOU ALWAYS.

Akira Atkins Posted 9 months ago

I’ve known Tanaucha personally and professionally for the better part of ten years. Not only is she competent and knowledgeable but she’s caring as well. I can’t remember a student , no matter how difficult, that she couldn’t or wouldn’t engage. If she met a challenge, she’d study it to find a solution. She’s always been a consummate professional and an even better friend and confidante . I often wonder how it is that Dr.Lewis has been able to see the best and worst of people with all their raw and fragile humanity on display and still manage to love them and make them feel special— all the while keeping that beautiful smile on her face. Her smile and laugh alone are infectious. The world is made better by her efforts to help those who need it. She gives so much and asks for nothing in return but it never hurts to give people their flowers while they can admire their beauty. If there is ANYONE who is worthy of this honor, it is she.

Denetra Taylor Posted 9 months ago

I met Dr. Lewis during our tenure when working with Ms Department of Human Services and our professional relationship has since continued. Dr. Lewis has always shown that she is compassionate about the work that she does no matter what services are being rendered at the time. She too has always shown her compassion and generosity towards the children and families that she has served and are currently serving. Dr. Lewis serves as an advocate for not only the children she represents but the parents and guardians of those children. In her current role, oftentimes families don't have a keen understanding what's needed to ensure success and growth of their child (ren). Dr. Lewis provides that continued support along with much needed resources to ensure goals and objectives are met individually for the child and or as a family unit. It is exciting to know that the work she is currently involved in is very well appreciated and acknowledged by the children and families within the community. Being nominated to receive the LifeChanger Award is an honor and accomplishment in itself. Jackson Public School District should be honored to have such a great person to represent them as she is definitely an asset to the schools in which she is assigned and ultimately lends to the success of the entire school district.

So it doesn't surprise me at all that her nurturing and caring spirit would also be poured into her students and called out by one of her parents. I can remember once she came home and cleaned out her son's closet to take to her underprivileged students so they can have clothes to wear in the winter. Another time she asked me to go shopping with her for Christmas, I thought that we were shopping for our family and friends but she starts naming students, parents and teachers that have impacted her throughout the year and she wanted to bless. Dr. Sister, as I lovingly call her, always gives 110% to all she does and she expects others to rise to that level as well. My sister is so deserving of this honor and I'm elated to see her being honored.
