Shona Burk was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

Mrs. Burk has worked at South Pontotoc Elementary for over 25 years. She cares deeply for children who face struggles. She walks beside them so she can get to know them, relate to them, and teach them ways to deal with their challenges. Mrs. Burk works tirelessly to find ways for her students to have success, from sharing stories about her animals, to showing students how to take care of chickens and goats in the outdoor classroom. Her goal is to help students find their voice however they best communicate.

"I saw her face light up with excitement the first time a child used his talker to express how he felt," said her nominator. "She celebrates milestones and good behavior, and she provides a safe, calm place when kids have turmoil. Our students are blessed by her wisdom, dedication, and love."

I have known Shona for many years. I have also taught her children. She is an upstanding person and mother who is dedicated to her two kids. She has also devoted herself to serving the children here at South Pontotoc as counselor and did an excellent job for the past 25 years. She deserves this nomination immensely. Thanks Shona... South Pontotoc will miss you!

When my child started Kindergarten she really struggled emotionally. Shona would let my daughter come to her room every morning so she could calm her down and then Shona walked her to class. Shona did this every day that first semester!! She goes out of her way to make sure these children are well cared for. I am so thankful every day for this sweet lady!!!

Shona is above all a good listener. She listens with compassion. She listens to understand. She listens to understand what is behind the words of students and coworkers. She finds solutions to problems. She is a true gem! The students are blessed to have her in their corner and I am blessed to have become her coworker this year!
