Music that Describes Muriel

Muriel Roberson was nominated by her colleague, Claudia Smith.

"I have worked with Muriel for four years, and she is one of the most dedicated teachers I have worked with," said Smith. "She represents the goals and norms of our campus and is the epitome of strength for our students. She excels in three areas essential to education: academics, community service and leadership."

Ms. Roberson is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher who teaches courses within the Education and Training program of study. Within the coursework, she prepares students for potential careers in the education field and sponsors the campus chapter of the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) organization. Ms. Roberson is an energetic, motivational classroom instructor. She consistently works hard and actively engages her students by incorporating hands-on techniques with lesson learning objectives. Ms. Roberson teaches a diverse group of students with varying academic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Regardless of their backgrounds, she encourages her students to think outside the box and motivates them by setting goals for them, even when they do not set goals for themselves.

Ms. Roberson has the ability to connect and communicate using a student-centered approach that fosters creativity, expression, and leadership. She accomplishes this by participating with her students in events throughout the community in which she works. Each year, all of her classes make Christmas cards for the seniors housed at an assisted living facility near the school. The week before Winter break, she and the students in her Instructional Practice class deliver the cards with candy canes. The seniors and the students enjoy their time together.

Ms. Roberson is also the campus sponsor for the campus Clothes Closet. When she initially inherited the Closet, it was not functional and had become a dump for unwanted things. Over the past three years, the Closet has served as a resource for students and staff alike. Last year, she created “Man Care Monday” and “Woman Care Wednesday." Both events happen twice each school year. On these days, students and staff are welcome to peruse the racks and take whatever they need without judgment. These events are popular among the students because they are open to all students, regardless of need. With the Clothes Closet came the Prom Rack, where students in need of clothing for Prom can shop and obtain items free of charge. When students dress well, they feel better about themselves, resulting in positive self-esteem.

Finally, Ms. Roberson is a leader among her peers and colleagues. She assumes leadership roles on campus as a program lead for the Public Services Academy and is a member of the Staff Leadership Team. In these roles, she provides support to students as well as colleagues. When she arrived at Stony Point High School a few years ago, the school did not have a Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) chapter. She sought out the necessary paperwork to apply for a chapter and enlisted the help of students who traditionally would not pursue a career in the teaching field. In its first year of existence, the group placed in the top four regional chapters. Last year and this year, three finalists placed at the State level.

"Through the years we have worked together, I have witnessed effective teaching, leadership, and mentorship of students," said Smith. "Muriel truly cares about her students and the community in which she works. No one is more deserving than she is."

I would like to take the time to absolutely agree and support Muriel for the LIfe Changer award. Muriel has been my colleague for the past 4 years. Since day 1 at Stony Point, Muriel has been involved and done many amazing things for our campus. Muriel has ran our CARE Clawset for our campus, providing students with clothing and personal items that are in need. She also involved her students in many volunteer opportunities, showing them the importance of giving back. She also works with local elementaries to provide her education students with opportunities to student teacher. They are able to have real world experience due to the relationships she has built in the community. No matter what is thrown her way Muriel handles it as a leader and with grace. She runs our TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators) organization. She has mentored and coached these students to advance in many competition. Even if all of this was not enough, I believe one of the biggest accomplishments she has is her professional and caring relationships she builds with her students. They know she care for them and their future. That to me is what a Life Changer really is!

Muriel Roberson is the quintessential Life Changer. She is essential to the wellbeing of our students at Stony Point HS. I needed to turn over our CARE Clawset due to other work commitments. The Care Clawset is a place where student could go to get clothes, Hygiene items, school supplies and food they may not have. Her very first year, Muriel volunteered her and her students (in a newly created class being offered for SR on Community outreach and giving back to the community). Our Care Clawset was small, disorganized and needed a direction. She volunteered to take on the huge responsibility and made it better than I could have imagined. She and her students started MALE MONDAYS and WOMEN WEDNESDAYS: in our common area clothes are on display to pickup for anyone who wants them. Muriel's Tigers also have WARM WINTER WEDNESDAY for those in need of warm clothing. There are donation days and incognito requests for necessities. They have taken the excess clothing to the homeless shelters. Muriel has continued the prom tradition of helping girls get dresses and holding a fashion show for them to pick from. She has now included suits and tuxedos as well. The following year Muriel Roberson took on the TAFE group. These future teachers have been making us proud; just this year they won numerous awards. We are so lucky Muriel chose Stony Point HS to change lives. As a former Life Changer nominee myself, Muriel Roberson is a LIFE CHANGER!!!

Ms.Roberson is my favorite teacher ever!! I have been one of her students for three years but it has been our time outside of the classroom that has been the most important to me. One of the clubs Ms.Roberson sponsors is TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators), and I have had the honor of serving as president of our schools chapter. Because of that I have worked very closely with Ms.Roberson and have built a strong relationship with her. Ms.Roberson has solidified that I truly do want to be an educator, especially one like her. Ms.Roberson is kind, talented, and knowledgeable these qualities help her to build relationships with every student that comes into her classroom. Because of these relationships every student that comes into Ms.Roberson’s classroom not only learns but also leaves more knowledgeable and kind. This ability is not something that every teacher has. Ms.Roberson has easily been my biggest inspiration not only in my career but life. If I can do half of what Ms.Roberson has done for me, for my future students I would be so happy.

Ms. Roberson is one of the best teachers I know! I’ve been her student for almost 2 years and being in her classes are so fun. She teaches in a fun and engaging way and truly wants us to succeed. Ms. Roberson is real with us and is such a great role model of a teacher. She inspires me and I hope to be like her if I go into teaching! I’m so so proud of her for being able to have this opportunity!

I only recently met Ms.Roberson, but everytime I do interact with her, she brings so much joy to me. I'm not one of her CTE students, but I did meet Ms.Roberson through TAFE. Being completely new to the club and being elected Historian, working with Ms.Roberson's passion was really motivating as a student. Her encouraging and bright vision for the club truly inspired me as an aspiring future-educator. I wish I could've joined TAFE sooner, so I could've met Ms.Roberson sooner! I believe that clubs are the best environment for students to thrive outside of the classroom, and Ms.Roberson's passion as a teacher take advantage of that platform to further reach out to students and their passion for greater education. Her impact on me as a club member of TAFE is great, and I hope I can get my teaching certificate in college as an homage to her impact on me!

I have been one of Mrs.Roberson’s students for almost 2 years, and she has been one of the greatest teachers. She has inspired me to be a future educator and is also helping me to get there. Her class is always the highlight of my day and brings me so much joy. She is postive, encouraging, supportive, and never fails to help her students. I am also a officer on Tafe and during this year, she has encouraged us to work as a team and become closer as a club. I inspire to one day impact students the way she has impacted me! Congratulations Mrs. Roberson.

I had the privilege of meeting Muriel this year through mutual friends, and I’ve already been profoundly impacted by her resilient spirit, passion for her students, and her ability to speak truth so eloquently. She is creative and compassionate, humble and strong. Her students are so fortunate to learn from her and to be inspired by her life! I only wish my own children would be so lucky to have her as a teacher.

I'm one of Ms.Roberson's students, and just want to say that she is a great teacher! I'm a freshman and my school year is not going so great since I have to stay home all the time, and I can't go to after school activities because of the virus, but those thoughts don't come to mind when I go to Ms.Roberson class. Everytime I go to her class she will always brighten the mood with her lively energy. Her lessons are always sweet and straight to the point with a little bit of humor. Congratulations Ms.Roberson on the nomination!

I first met Muriel over 5 years ago when we were both teaching internationally. It was evident from the beginning that her genuine and nurturing nature made the greatest impression and impact on all she encountered: both inside and outside of the classroom. I cannot think of a more fitting title for such a phenomenal and deserving individual!
