LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Kim Katz

Position: School Librarian
School: Moore Elementary School
School District: Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
City, State: Houston, TX

Support Kim

Kim Katz was nominated by Tiffany & Jarret Hughes, as well as her principal, Patricia Myers.

This nomination comes in wake of the devastation that Houston endured with Hurricane Harvey, which flooded homes, businesses and schools. Moore Elementary School in the Lakewood Forest subdivision near Cypress, TX experienced significant damage from the massive flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. The first day of school was set to be Monday August 28th, and teachers had just finished setting up their classrooms right before the storm hit the Texas coastline on August 25th. School supplies, decorations, classroom libraries, and materials were all destroyed. The teachers are playing a critical role in helping children recover from the trauma they may have experienced in their own homes.

Kim Katz, the school librarian, returned to the school after the flood waters receded to an absolute total loss of her school's campus, including more than 20,000 books that filled the school library. Before the school year started on Monday, September 11th, Ms. Katz organized a book drive to get books back in teachers' classrooms and in the hands of the students. She worked very long hours with a smile on her face to make the impossible, possible. She filled teachers' classrooms with books, and even restocked the school library! In time, the library will be moved from the temporary school where classes are currently held back to Moore Elementary once reconstruction is finished.

Ms. Katz's efforts do not stop there. In the ten years she has worked for Moore Elementary School, she has been involved in getting the students excited about reading. Book Fairs, purchase incentive prizes, and author visits help raise money for new books while engaging the students in learning.

Ms. Katz goes above and beyond in her role as librarian. She dresses up as characters from books to get the students excited about reading.

"Her dedication to keep students reading is incredible," Ms. Hughes said. "It’s her energy, commitment to her staff and students and love of reading that demonstrate she is a one of a kind “Super Hero” Librarian."

Kim has done a phenomenal job organizing our book drives and handling the placement and distribution of the donations after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. The thousands of books that had to be gone through and placed on shelves was a daunting task. Kim took it on with a smile and helped so many teachers with replacing books that were lost in the flood. She also made sure that our Moore students had opportunities to choose books to help replace the ones that they lost, as well. Kim took on a massive job this year and accomplished so much to help our Moore teachers and students.

Kim Katz, with her energy, her knowledge and her passion, makes the library come alive for the students at Moore Elementary. I have volunteered in the library for years and I've heard her read stories to the children, I've seen her dress up as characters and I've witnessed her inspire children to read. She shares so much of herself every day for the benefit of our children. My daughter comes home from school now, not asking to turn the TV on, but asking if she can read a book!

Sandy Williams Posted over a year ago

Kim is amazing! Never without a smile, always willing to do whatever it takes to get children excited and engaged with the magic of books! She dresses up as characters from her books to further excite their interest. They are always so thrilled to see her costumes. Her hard work and dedication in getting the library back up and running and books into the hands of students and teachers a like is inspiring!

Kim is a fantastic librarian! My 1st grade students love library time with her because of her engaging book talks. We never know what costume Mrs. Katz will be dressed in, but if there is a costume that fits a character or theme, you can bet that she will be in full costume. Kim has truly been a lifesaver to our school in her amazing efforts to replace books destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. Each teacher at our school has had their classroom libraries replaced, and then some, because of Kim’s tireless efforts over the last few months. We are so blessed to have such a kind, loving, hardworking, lifesaver at Moore Elementary! We love our Mrs Katz!!!

Anyone that knows Kim knows that she will do anything to help kids fall in love with books - including dressing up in fabulous costumes. She also goes above and beyond personally for coworkers and friends. My son was diagnosed with Leukemia this past June. She has been a HUGE supporter of my family helping to sell Team Trey bracelets to cover medical expenses and bringing my son care packages (and Mom care packages, too). She is my role model as a librarian, as a servant-leader, and as a true friend. I am so proud she has been nominated for this award!

Congratulations on your nomination Kim! What a well-deserved honor! Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many students and teachers. You have changed our lives by changing our hearts about books. For many the library is a place of refuge and you have created an inspiring place for all to be. Your bright and bubbly personality has hooked many students in becoming a reader, especially when you become the real life character of a book dressed in costume. What a hook! It's a fun and exciting place for students to be. The school year didn't begin as planned with the flooding of our school and the loss of all the library books. However, KIm came to the rescue and worked so hard gathering the many donated books and shelving them for the students, With an unusual beginning, Kim has made it as normal as it could be for our students and teachers. She is always willing and ready to help in any way.. Thank you for being our pathway to knowledge and literacy. We are extremely fortunate to have you as our special librarian.

As a publishers representative it has been my honor and pleasure to know Kim for many years in her role as a librarian/educator. I have always found her to be intelligent, dedicated, sincere, and especially joyful. Whether she is presented with an opportunity, a problem, or a challenge, she always proceeds in a joyful manner, and her joy seems to influence everyone who comes into contact with her. Not only am I not surprised that Kim took charge dealing with the damages resulting from the hurricane, I expected her to do exactly what she did. Kim is a "Lifechanger", and she makes the lives of everyone around her much happier, and fuller, and better! Kim is a joyful soul who makes the world a much better place. Thanks Kim!

Kim is absolutely amazing and totally deserves this award!

Terri Mitchell Posted over a year ago

I have had the privilege of working with Kim as an Assistant Principal at Moore Elementary. I can share that the devastation we shared just as school was set to begin was traumatic for everyone. With the help of all of our district, our teachers and our community, as well as Kim we were able to relocate and gather furniture, supplies and technology in time to open in a vacated building in a matter of days. During this time we did not see Kim much because she was busy conducting her own recovery effort for our library. On the first day of school every classroom had a bookshelf full of books for our teachers to use. She also set up individual libraries in each of our Language Arts classrooms for students to "Check Out" books because our library shelves were empty. Her next project was to provide opportunities for every one of our nearly 900 students to "shop" for books to keep at home. As educators, we know it is important to keep books in the hands of our children. Many of our students had lost everything in the flood. Kim made sure they had books to read to help take their minds off what they were going through at home. She is such a hard worker who has vision and compassion for her job as an educator.

Laura Harman Posted over a year ago

Kim is the epitome of what a school librarian should be. Her creativity, enthusiasm and love of books are just the spark that makes students love reading. She brings stories to life with her storytelling and is often found dressed in character to motivate her student audiences. She is an outstanding choice for this life changer award.

Dianne S Meyer Posted over a year ago

I have the honor of working with librarians throughout SE Texas. I was also a librarian before working in my present role as an educational consultant. During my time of working with librarians in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (CFISD), I have come to know Kim Katz and seen her lead the students and teachers of Moore Elementary toward success in literacy. Her dedication and enthusiasm for her role is extraordinary. And it always has been. When Hurricane Harvey entered our area and brought devastation to Moore Elementary and its neighborhoods, Kim Katz took the lead, not giving in to despair, but determining what needed to be done to get the school's population served as it moved into a temporary facility, the old Matzke Elementary, now Moore on Jones Road. The book drops/drives held across the CFISD district provided a multitude of books and supplies geared for Moore's needs. With Kim’s guidance volunteers, including current and retired librarians, manned the receipt, sorting, and distribution of thousands of books to serve as replacements for classroom libraries. The sorrow of loss turned into the joy of taking care of what needed to be done. At present, Kim continues to work on the restoration of the library collection. And she does all this while teaching Moore's students who have come to love her way of becoming a part of whatever book she is presenting. Her costumes were safely housed at her home out of the flood's path. And so she is at the ready to make books come alive for Moore Elementary's students. The assurance of things going on just as they would have if Moore hadn't been destroyed has changed the lives of so many children who otherwise could sink into despair as they faced the disappointment of not being in class in their beloved old building among familiar things. Many of them also lost the sanctity of their homes to floodwaters. With leadership and love like that of Kim Katz, a true super librarian, Moore Elementary's population has been blessed with the life-changing attributes that make schools successful emotionally and educationally. She is a perfect choice for this nomination. Sincerely, Dianne S. Meyer, retired teacher/librarian, educational consultant

Diane Garland Posted over a year ago

In my role as the district library coordinator, I have worked with some pretty amazing librarians. But since Harvey hit, I have seen some pretty amazing footwork from Kim. She has not stopped thinking of what her students and teachers needed, and simply by asking, the entire community came out to help. She orchestrated book drives and school supply drives. She helped organize friends and colleagues in the process of replenishing classroom libraries and ensured that her students, who lost everything, too, were able to replenish their own personal home libraries. She is now in the process of rebuilding her school library collection of 20,000 volumes, a monumental task, all while providing her students with lessons and author visits and extending the classroom lessons when they visit the library. In a perfect world, this would be the expectation of all of our district librarians, but to see it in action is beyond amazing! Thanks, Kim, for all you do!!

Melinda Murphy Posted over a year ago

Kim, does not know the word can't or won't! Her endless energy and enthusiasm is beyond belief. I was fortunate to work as a fellow librarian for years with Kim, so her reaction to the hurricane did not surprise me. As one of the older campus libraries, Kim was always willing to share with other schools in the district titles that were only available at Moore. Sharing her technology skills with fellow librarians via email have always been second nature. Each lesson, idea powerpoint included the message use, edit delete. The lessons were truly appreciated by all of us. As a result of Harvey, Moore lost all the contents of the classroom libraries, as well as the books in the library. The day of the book drive, Kim greeted the people bringing the books with a big thank you so much. Behind the scenes, rooms were prepared to receive the books. First goal, for each of the teachers to have books for their classrooms, then books for the students to take home and then for the teachers to have mobile libraries for students to "check" out books to take home until the library is open for check out. Her awesomeness continues as she provides materials for the teachers and students as well as ordering and preparing for the new library.

Jill Johnson Posted over a year ago

My son is in 4th grade at Moore and was devastated when his school flooded. When we were finally able to get out and drive around, he immediately wanted to go see his school. As we rounded the corner, we could see all the "insides on the outside" and he burst into tears. He loves reading and loves his school library, so when we heard we could donate to help rebuild the school's collection of books, he was eager to donate many of his own and buy many more to help replenish Moore's stockpile. The day we went to drop off our donations, Kim was outside with a smile greeting her kiddos and telling them it would be okay. Through many, many long days, she has sorted and catalogued and put together a collection of books that rivals any other elementary. Her tireless efforts and optimistic attitude have helped her students get through this horrible event. Thank you for considering her for this award!

The example of her exceptional service post hurricane to her school community, the kids, parents and teachers is an amazing example of her practice, yet strangely typical of her. Even before the Hurricane that changed so many lives as it tore things apart and brought people together, she was representing her community and her profession so well. We at Capstone were honored to name her as one of the educators in the nation for our spotlight calendar. Of the tens of thousands of amazing librarians we had to choose from, she was nominated and named one of the 12 featured stories. She makes a difference every day for individuals and communities alike. I really am excited to see such a deserving and inspiring person nominated for this award!
