Monique Redwood was nominated by her friend Emmlynn Taylor.

With the extensive education that she has received over the years, and is still receiving through Professional Development, Ms. Redwood has developed the proven ability to make a beneficial difference in the lives of her students. She has the ability to positively add to the development of the school’s atmosphere. As a member of the Sunshine Committee, she is always trying to find ways to build morale. The committee celebrates monthly birthdays, holidays, and has family bingo nights, just to name a few. Community involvement is very important to the staff and students, so they do their best to include community members in everything they do.

Ms. Redwood is a proven leader within her school and district, and was granted the opportunity to be the Chair of the Mathematics Department during her first year of teaching. Alongside being the Chair, she is also a member on the Principals’ Instructional Cabinet. She has been rated an effective teacher since she began teaching at Junior High School 123X. She has been observed multiple times during the school year and uses the feedback received to improve her pedagogy. Ms. Redwood is passionate about being at school for her students, and is only one day shy of having perfect attendance.

The students at her school come from tough backgrounds and consider Ms. Redwood's classroom a safe haven. Despite the difficult home-life that students may be struggling with, she always makes sure that they are comfortable and safe in her classroom. Not only do they discuss mathematical equations, but they also discuss some of life’s most challenging obstacles.

Adhering to high moral and ethical standards is something that Ms. Redwood prides herself in. She is personal, professional and leads by example for her students. She leans on her values of doing what is right, not only in the forefront, but also when no one may be overseeing her.

"It is with great pleasure and pride that I nominate Ms. Redwood for the 2017-18 LifeChanger of the Year," Taylor said. "She walks the walk every day, and is a wonderful role model for her students and community. I wish her continued success, and know that she will continue to affect the hearts and minds of all the students she teaches."

The summary above is only a small testament of the passion that Ms.Redwood brings to her students. I know her to be professional and caring beyond measure. For students that many teachers find challenging, she finds ways to break down their walls and get to the core of their social dilemma in order to engage and motivate them to reach their full potential. Her moral compass and passion for the success of each child that comes within her reach is why she deserves this award. Keep shining Ms. Redwood as I see you as a beacon, not only creating some of our greatest future math scholars but creating great people in our community.

Ms. Redwood was one of the first people I met when I started working at 123. 24 years old, broke, still in grad school, and terrified of the 70 students I’d soon be teaching, I found peace in Redwood’s confident smile and encouragement in her kind words. As soon as she gets into the school, her door is open for me to pour out the many concerns I sometimes have in my head. She has never held back when giving me feedback and it is because of that I can now say I am a better math teacher. Not only has she proven herself to be a powerful leader and mentor, she has become a literal shoulder for me to cry on. I cannot imagine our school without her and I thank God for her everyday.

I have had the pleasure of pushing into Ms. Redwood math class to provide academic support to struggling students. Ms. Redwood from the start of the period to the end has remained highly motivated and energetic when it comes to teaching her students. She has no favorites and she pulls no punches when it comes to letting her students know what they will need to make progress in her class, high school, and beyond. Monique has gone beyond the role of just an educator; she serves a mentor to students long after they leave the confines of her classroom. She is passionate about teaching and it shows in the way her students responds to her, they are attentive and respectful because the woman that stands in front of them truly cares and they know it.

As Ms. Redwood’s principal, I have had the privilege of seeing the impact of her on the lives of students for the last three years. From preparing students for the standardized high school examination, tutoring kids during her lunch break, to conferencing with each student in her class based on that student’s individualized needs is remarkable. It is no accident that students in her class grow at a higher rate than others across the city. Ms. Redwood truly is a life changer.

On top of being a great teacher, Ms. Redwood is also such a great, useful resource to her co-workers. This year is my first year teaching the 8th grade math curriculum and Ms. Redwood, routinely, takes the time to sit with me to assure that I understand the math curriculum and have the material to succeed. Additionally, on a weekly basis, Ms. Redwood visits my Math classes to help me teach the 8th grade math curriculum and assists in helping my students with IEPs master 8th grade Mathematics State Standards. I am very grateful for her hard work; she truly makes a difference.

Ms. Redwood is by far one of the best teachers I have had the opportunity to work with in my 17 years working in schools. From her great attendance, to her dedication to All students. She has shown again and again that she is a prototype teacher who achieves results from her students. We at J.H.S 123 are lucky to have her. In my opinion, she is the best of the best and deserves recognition for her selfless efforts.
