Shenelle DuBose was nominated by her colleague, Beverly Velloff.

Dr. DuBose has changed the school experience for 388 students this year. She has been an educator for more than 15 years, and has served as a principal for the past 5 years. Within these years as principal, she has taken a school that was listed as a “focus school” with an APR score of 50%, to a school that now has a rating of 82.9%. Upon her arrival, ELA scores were in the teens. Now, the students are achieving at 41% proficiency. This extraordinary academic growth of the school is directly related to Dr. DuBose's commitment to improving education. She has a proven ability to positively help staff and students see themselves as capable of change. Her leadership qualities prove that through focused, data-driven instruction, high expectations and parent involvement, students are motivated to reach academic success.

Dr. DuBose believes in providing a well-rounded learning community, with high expectations for students and staff. This year, she went beyond her norm and started Genius Days. On early release professional development days, she noticed that attendance was poor for students. To change this environment, Dr. DuBose brainstormed with her staff and came up with roughly 20 different topics that students may be interested in learning more about, and called these days Genius Days. Topics like gymnastics, cooking, coding, computer repair, sewing and more gave students the opportunity to try something new; something they're interested in.

Teachers were now facilitating multi-age groups of students about a skill or specific interest. Students had the opportunity to preview these opportunities, prior to picking their top 3 choices. By providing choice, students connect new learning to their favorite content, personal interest, hobby, or skill they are good at. By providing this ongoing Genius Day opportunity, Dr. DuBose, without a doubt, has provided an environment of ongoing community and personal affirmations. She believes in her building, staff, students, and families.

Her leadership goals and collaborative culture within Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School provides an environment of high moral and ethical standards. She goes above and beyond by respectfully pushing her staff to think differently or outside of the box. She is determined to change mindsets and prove to others that all students are capable of achieving at high levels, and as Dr. DuBose would say, “you just have to provide them an accessible entry point”.

Dr. Shenelle DuBose is a wonderful individual! She is extremely knowledgeable about the topics that impact the academic success of our children. While working with one another on our doctorate degree, Shenelle always persevered through tough times and was a wonderful collaborator. I learned a lot from her leadership style and overall presence as an elementary school principal. She is an excellent, eloquent public speaker who strives to improve her own practices as well others. Dr. Shenelle DuBose definitely deserves this award.

Suzie Feagan Posted over a year ago

Dr. Shenelle Dubose is most deserving of this award. She is a strong leader who is willing to adapt to whatever is best for her students. She regularly walks outside her comfort zone and by doing that she has created a positive, fun, equitable, and engaging learning environment for her students. She does everything that she can to make sure that her students have every learning opportunity that they can have to help prepare them for careers and their future. The students see opportunity and are really becoming energetic and focused learners. I have students that are in the lower elementary grades talking about where they are going to college and what they are going to study. Currently, coding and engineering are the most popular. The difference that she has made in such a short time is astounding. She tirelessly works to make sure that her school feels like a home and that there is a strong sense of family and community. It has been amazing to see how she has created an enthusiastic and supportive learning environment for her students and their families.

Why wouldn't you choose Dr. Dubose for this award? She is not afraid to dream. I've listened to many of her ideas of how to support students, staff, and our community in general. I've said to myself, "How in the world is she going to pull this off?" To my amazement, she makes it happen every.single.time. She is not afraid to be vocal about what our students need and deserve. She takes on issues of equity daily to make sure our students have the same access to resources and the same opportunities as other students from affluent districts. Dr. Dubose is passionate about her profession and it shows in everything she does. You can't help but notice her level of commitment to this district and our families. Parents have a sense of comfort and assurance that she will do what is necessary to make sure every student can and will succeed. She is present at PTO meetings and she initiates fundraisers to help raise money for various projects such as Genius Days. She meets with community leaders and ask them to share their strengths and talents with our students. She has organized Math Tutoring, in which volunteers give time to help our students learn multiplication facts and practice other crucial math skills. Field trips are also embedded which help students make the connection that Math is Everywhere! She coordinated a Holiday Shoppe with Bishop Baker, founder of Man of Valor so that our students could earn points for attendance. They could redeem those attendance points for Christmas gifts for loved ones, donated by the Man of Valor organization. This taught our students the true meaning of giving. What really makes her a successful leader is that she understands that she humanizes the profession of teaching. Teachers are encouraged to put themselves and families first, often telling us "You can't be any good to others if you aren't good to yourself first." As educators, we often place importance of our profession above all personal matters. Dr. Dubose reminds us to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of our families and the overflow will spill over into our professional lives, making us better educators and people all around. Such profound advice! Please make her your top choice for LifeChanger of the Year!

I have worked with Dr. DuBose since starting as a new teacher at Barbara C. Jordan. She has always been supportive and encouraging of my growth as a teacher. Dr. DuBose cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Consequently, she pushes her teachers to be their best for the students. I have grown and learned a lot about myself as an educator in my time at our school. I am very proud to know Dr. DuBose.

Latasha Nelson Posted over a year ago

Dr. DuBose is one of the most influential leaders I've worked for in my 9 years of teaching. She is a very goal-oriented person with one thing in mind - the students. She has pushed me to be my best and challenged me to go even further. Her passion and dedication to our students, teachers and staff is recognized as soon as you hear her speak. "Every student can learn" is one piece of advice she has give to educators, as she helped lead teachers in looking at raw data, recognizing where we were academically as a school, setting data-based goals with researched instructional strategies embedded in lessons, and encouraging and assisting teachers and staff to reach those goals. Underneath her leadership, our school, Barbara C. Jordan Elementary, has made tremendous gains each year on our MAP assessments. She encourages us to celebrate our strengths and to choose a weakness to strengthen so that it is no longer a weakness. If anyone deserves this award, it's definitely Dr. Shenelle DuBose.

DR. Dubose you are good Principal because you try to help most students in the school who don't have much and are very poor and you inspire me to help them when I get older . Dr. Dubose I am very glad you are our Principal and I hope you stay our principal and you are the best because you do what is best for all of us. All 5 years I've been here I have been happy you are our Principal please stay here as long as you can because if you do leave it might not be a good principal to come to our school and people might take their kids out of the school and Ucity school district might take down our schools and that's why you're my favorite principal

Dr. Dubose is the best and most amazing principal! She helps me to get better when I'm angry and she cares about me and she also gives us Genius Day and gives us parties and rewards for go vibes and is always nice to the teachers and staff. She respects everyone at the school and gives us upgrades on things. She is a fun principal to have and no one can top of with what she has done for us for the past 5 years I have been at Barbara C. Jordan and out of all of the principals she is the best. She gives us fun activities to do like dodgeball and ice skating.

Wu Bakeman Posted over a year ago

One of the many traits of Dr. DuBose that delights me is her use of multitudinous approaches to meld her staff into a true team. In these exercises, different specialties and strengths are revealed. While these approaches reveal that people tend to work best in "their group" to my amazement, I have found that Dr. DuBose is an administrator who has the heart of a poet, cognizant of data but consumed by vision: a tough and conscientious leader who cares deeply about individuals and takes the time to see that their unique needs are met. She defies characterization or pigeon-holing because she is somehow able to transcend those boundaries and in so doing, creates a school that is vibrant, constantly improving, and above all, a loving community. Her vivid imagination is contagious and she endlessly encourages the teachers to do the amazing things that bring the love of learning to our students. After 29 years of teaching I am at last in an environment with an amazing leader who not only understands the way children learn but who also values creativity. With the support Dr. DuBose gives me, I truly feel that I am a vital part of a community where I can fulfill my calling to teach students to the best of my ability. It was not surprising that yesterday when I asked my class to name five African-Americans who had most inspired them that Dr. DuBose was #1 on the list. She truly inspires me!

My mom deserves this award. She works all the time and really cares about her students. Not only that, she cares about the teachers. At home she is always talking about what she is going to do to make the teachers and students better at school. When she is putting things together for them I sometimes wish I worked at her school. I don't even think they know how much energy she puts into her job. And she never complains. She will tell me and my brothers how it is our job to help others. She works at her school, she works at my school and people are always calling her for advice. This tells me she must be pretty valuable because they value her opinion. I have a good principal but the type of good my mother is different. I have had 3 principals and none of them do the types of things I see my mom doing. We see kids in the stores all the time and they just run up to her and hug her. I would never hug my principal. I hope she wins because people who work the hardest alot of times get overlooked. She doesn't care if she wins. I do because she is doing equity work at her school and my school and they are very different school systems. I just want her to see that she can have equity too. Thank you for reading this.

Students, parents, and staff members find it easy to follow her lead. She introduces new ideas and concepts that include an avenue for all of us to participate. We have embarked upon several new adventures like; Genius Days, all school Math Night at the Magic House, school-wide celebrations, school-wide movies at an off sight theater, fundraisers to support the learning, and after school clubs to enhance math, science, reading, and athletic skills. She is an amazing leader. Our building is a friendly, welcoming learning environment, because of her leadership! Congratulations!.

Dr. DuBose is an incredible leader and partner to our organization. She is responsive, clear and stead fast in her aggressive pursuit of goals for her students. She shares the victories and struggles of her campus with candor, inviting her partners to contribute and support the path that Barbara C Jordan is on. As a partner, I deeply appreciate this. This means that our Teaching Artists are able to align and work in service of Dr. DuBose's priorities. This is a game changer! She is incredibly deserving of this honor.

She builds a relationship with each and every student, whether they are model students or whether they are students who struggle. Students know she loves them and that she expects the very best they can give every day. Having a leader who cares as much as she does makes a huge difference in our school community.

Mrs. DuBose is my personal life changer. Because of her, I was named the 2017 U-City teacher of the year. It was because of her support and the letters that she wrote that I went on to be named a regional teacher of the year and one of 7 finalists for Missouri teacher of the year. Mrs. DuBose has faith in all of her teachers. She give us guidance, when needed but gives us room to grow and take risks in the classroom. Our school has changed 10 fold she came to work with us. We would not be where we are without her.

Where do I begin? Dr. DuBose has been such an inspiration to me to become who I am today than who I was when she first arrived at Barbara C. Jordan five years ago. She has allowed me to grow and explore who I could become by facing my fears and my true potential. Dr. DuBose is a true leader in very thing she does and is not afraid for others to show and use their leadership skills. I must admit that I believe she is my personal Life Changer. I greatly appreciate Dr. DuBose.

I have had the pleasure and honor to work with Dr. Shenelle Dubose in my role as Coordinator of State and Federal Programs. Over the course of our time working alongside one another, I have been witness to her amazing leadership, organization, and communication skills. Our collaborative time together always ends in action, which I think is her greatest strength. Her ability to assess a situation, come up with viable solutions and then implement the actions with fidelity is unprecedented, but even more profound is her skills in relationship building. She has the keen ability to read people and this has benefited her in her leadership roles here in the School District of University City. Dr. Dubose is also extremely intelligent and driven to succeed, not for herself, but for the teachers and students under her care. She will not leave a stone unturned if it will benefit students as it relates to academic achievement and social and emotional needs. Dr. Dubose can think outside of the box when it comes to meeting the needs of students and staff. I feel so proud to know her and lucky to have had the opportunity to learn and grow from her leadership. She is my "Life Changer."

I've have known Dr. DuBose for over 10 years and in that time she has always been my go to educator for advice when it comes to leadership and creating a caring and nurturing culture and climate in the schools. The advice that she gives is the most simplest and obvious things, but as she is speaking with you she makes you look at it as if why didn't you think of that yourself. Dr. DuBose never speaks to you as if you are beneath her, she speaks to you as a true colleague. I am very proud to call Dr. Shenelle DuBose my lifelong friend and mentor. She is truly worthy of this great honor.

Dr. DuBose is an excellent example of a caring and considerate leader. I love how she advocates for each and every student, staff member, and parent. Dr. DuBose strives to build and maintain community connections and involve our families as much as possible, recognizing that it takes a village to raise our students. She takes us to CHURCH at times with her straightforward observations and speeches but we know that she truly has the interests of the students and school at heart. The school has seen great improvement over the years with Dr. DuBose's visionary leadership. Thanks for being a mentor, coach, and one of the best leaders I have worked under!

Dr. Dubose is not just a leader to me but she is also an inspiration. Her hard work has been encouragement to me to move higher and thinker bigger. It is an honor to work for someone of her statue. It is one thing to be a principal, another thing to be a mentor but a completely different thing to be a leader. I am proud to be led by a principal, mentor and friend like Dr. Dubose. Thanks for everything. I could never write enough words to express the gratitude I have for Dr. Dubose.

Jill Rogers Posted over a year ago

I have had the honor of working with Dr. Dubose since she started working as principal at Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School. Dr. Dubose told us right away that we had to take a hard look at our data - reading and math proficiency on the MAP, student and teacher attendance, discipline, PLC data and parent involvement. Her student-centered approach to instruction, engagement, culture, and discipline has moved us toward the changes in data that are gaining attention. However, what I would like to acknowledge about Dr. Dubose is something that is impossible to chart. I believe that Dr. Dubose deserves this honor, over other nominees, not just because she has put in her blood, sweat and tears but because she has never sacrificed her integrity, good humor, or belief that education can and should be equitable. Dr. Dubose cares about students, our families, and bridging the achievement gap - she has never made one decision or misstep without these things as her compass. I can't imagine anyone else more deserving of this award.

This is my first year teaching and in this district. I am so lucky to have a principal like Dr. DuBose. She has been very welcoming and supportive. I truly feel like I have found my niche at BCJ! Since August, she has already acted as my TIL, life coach (inside joke), and of course my principal. She is very encouraging and inspirational. She understands that it takes a big heat to teach and she reminds and thanks us often. I am constantly shown appreciation for the job I do every day. Thank you Dr. DuBose for everything you have done, I am so happy and proud of you!

I have been under the leadership of Dr.Dubose for three years. She has helped me personally and professionally. Any new information that could help us individually and as a team she is more than willing to share. She is smart, data driven, and hardworking. She is a natural born leader and she is very knowledgeable of taking an urban district to new heights. Under her leadership our school has seen continuous growth that I believe will continue from years to come.

Ever since I have started to work under Dr. Dubose leadership; I have learned a lot which really helps me to become a better person. Dubose.

I can't say enough great things about Dr. Dubose. It's hard to even find where to start. As a first year teacher, I was inspired by Dr.Dubose's confidence and enthusiasm for her new teachers and staff. She provides wonderful insight no matter what the topic is. She is caring and understanding of everyone in the building. She gets to know the students and is able to build a relationship with all of them. Students see her as someone who they can go to when they need someone who will be an advocate for their voice. Dr. Dubose is constantly checking on how she can best support everyone and truly cares about the success of our students. I was overwhelmed with pride and joy when I saw she was nominated for this. She has made an impact on my life already and I can only imagine what she will do in the future. Way to go Dr. Dubose! You are a new role model that has come into my life and I am thankful everyday for you!

I am thankful for Dr. DuBose's commitment to creating a school culture that values authentic learning experiences. Genius days, field trips, meaningful school partnerships, and after-school activities that Dr. DuBose initiates and supports make a big difference in the learning of our students. I also appreciate her leadership in addressing current events that affect students and teachers, such as informational blog posts in the aftermath of the Jason Stockley verdict in September 2017. Thank you, Dr. DuBose--you are a life changer!

I can attest to the fact that Dr. Dubose places the utmost importance on academic achievement and success for all students, teachers and families. She truly cares about each child's overall well being. She works closely with high-needs students and does what she can to help them self-monitor their choices. She holds the bar high for everyone in the building (students, teachers, and families) in a positive manner. She strives to make each day an excellent one for everyone around her. She is a valuable member of our team!

Dr. Dubose came to our school during a time of despair. We were in need of a leader who could positively change our culture. 5 years later, our culture is one of strength and supporting one another. She puts our students first and thrives to give them every opportunity she can find. She reaches out to the community to help support numerous programs to help increase engagement and student learning. I have learned a great deal from Dr. Dubose.

Dr. Dubose is a fine example of strong leadership that works. She is a positive voice for children, families, staff, and administrators. As a colleague and peer of Dr. Dubose, I have had the privilege of working with her while listening to her ideas and insights. Her work is inspiring. She wants for our district students what she wants for her children. It is a pleasure to be on the same team!

Shenelle works extremely hard and is compassionate about this work. She not only works in her school but in schools around the community. She is always willing to share her strategies and mentor others. She has been leading a parent in the Clayton School District and the traction they have gained has been really good. You will find another who touches and changes lives the way Dr. DuBose does. With the succees she has had she has literally changed generations of families lives by ensuring they are reading on grade level. If you knew her you would know this is mission for her.

Awesome choice!!! Dr. DuBose is nothing less of the things spoken above. She is always encouraging others to be better in every area of life and is definitely a joy to have around. All children love and gravitate to her. Dr. DuBose is very deserving of this award and I'm sure her humbleness won't allow her to believe she does. Congratulations Dr. DuBose!!!

I first worked with Dr. DuBose when she was an administrator at U. City High School. The business community provided funding so that some students could attend private ACT test prep classes. Dr. DuBose worked with the students who participated, and followed up with each of them, especially if they missed a class. This level of dedication and understanding of our students was both impressive and effective. When the district transferred her from the high school to Barbara Jordan I was first upset, but then agreed that our most talented staff should be leading our lowest performing school. That decision has resulted in huge academic growth for these students. I have seen DuBose work closely with staff at regular grade level meetings so that all teachers can become stronger at their craft and really reach all of our kids. We are in the second year of an after school Math Club tutoring program focused at third and fourth grade students who need help mastering math facts. Our 14 volunteer tutors are making a difference for the students, and are continually impressed with the level of support and quality of the teaching staff. DuBose is very receptive to suggestions and requests from the tutors. The school is hosting a family dinner next week to help support this program, as the tutors suggested. Finally, Genius Days is a genius idea. I volunteer with nine students who are writing their own book. When you walk into the building you can feel the energy and excitement. Frankly, I never expected such young kids to be so seriously interested in writing. Several in my group are already writing on their own, so this opportunity to write and illustrate a book that will be professionally published is a real thrill. What an outstanding way to support basic reading, writing and critical thinking skills while developing a love for learning. I only hope that this program is expanded to all of our elementary schools. It is truly that fabulous! I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Principal Dr. Shenelle DuBose!
