Christine Hietanen Posted over a year ago

During my first two years at MCST, I had the pleasure of working closely with Jennifer Skomial as a fellow English teacher. Since then, she has continued to inspire students and colleagues in her role as the instructor of the Academy for Education and Learning. As a former student of MCST—specifically a student in the same academy in which she teaches—Jen is passionate about all aspects of learning. She views herself as a learner striving to hone her craft, and consistently pursues opportunities for her own professional development. Among her numerous teaching talents, I am particularly impressed with her dedication to promoting a classroom environment that rewards independent thinking, self-reliance and autonomy. Her mission is to prepare students to be self-sufficient in her classroom as well as in society. She practices and promotes high integrity and overall good citizenship in her daily classes. With respect to her classroom instruction, Jen channels the pedagogy of Charlotte Danielson each day in her quest for students to take ownership of their learning and define their own academic and career path. She plans lessons that are not only thorough, thought-provoking and engaging, but also authentic and relevant. While observing her classes as a model for my own instruction, I have witnessed her facilitate a student-centered learning environment that encourages peer discussion and advances student responsibility in learning. She infuses interdisciplinary methods in her lessons and differentiates instruction based on the diverse learning modalities, multiple intelligences, levels of readiness, and interests of each student. With keeping the needs of her students at the forefront of all her planning, she incorporates additional real-world activities for them to experience. Jen has bolstered her Advisory Council through which she has formed valuable connections with area educators and specialists who often come to her classroom to present and speak with her classes. She implemented teacher observations at both MCST as well in other schools. In doing so, she has built strong relationships with other schools and community facilities including Valley View, Celebrate the Children, and CCM so her students can have multiple learning opportunities. In addition to her commitment to excellence in her classroom, she is equally as dedicated to assisting her colleagues achieve greatness in their classrooms. As a fellow Lead Teacher, she has offered hours of collaboration and has spearheaded initiatives including Pop-Up PD, Lead Teacher/ AC Pow-Wows, and Book Club. She currently serves as a new teacher mentor and has previously held positions as Master Teacher. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to work directly with such an innovative and inspiring teacher.

Mrs. Skomial is the most welcoming, kind and caring teacher a person could have. Without Mrs. Skomial, I am not sure that I would even know where I wanted to go in life. She has taught myself and my peers not only the importance of teaching , but the importance of being an educator in today’s world and the impact we can make on others. From teaching us to always think outside of the box and understand other’s perspectives to teaching the broad aspect of professionalism, she is shaping her students to soar high among others, hitting the ground running. Mrs. Skomial always provides her students the best opportunities to be the best they can be. I am so thankful for everything Mrs. Skomial has done for me, and cannot wait to see what the next two years hold. Thank you so much for everything Mrs. Skomial, you deserve this!

Jennifer Skomial is a deserving recipient of this award. She is a lead teacher at MCST and had run multiple professional development sessions. She works very hard at her job and is dedicated to the school. This is evident both by her taking on many responsibilities and her longevity at the position. Additionally her students are among the most responsible at the school(turning all assignments in on time/ studying outside of class/etc). I have no doubt that Jen had some influence on this.

Mrs. Skomial is the most passionate and dedicated teacher I have ever had the pleasure of having. She has helped me grow as an individual and a future educator and for that, I will forever be grateful. Being a junior now in her Education and Learning class, I have had Mrs. Skomial for three years and every day is a new learning experience. She has positively guided me from being a shy little girl who was afraid of everything to becoming a strong leader in the classroom. She encourages me to the best version of myself, and to attack my dreams. Her enthusiasm and great student relationships have really impacted me and others so greatly. I am so proud to call my life changer, Mrs. Skomial, a true LIFE CHANGER.

There is truly no one more deserving of recognition. Mrs Skomial is not only a dedicated teacher, she also is an admirable role model for positivity and change in her everyday life. I have witnessed Mrs Skomial as a fellow student who worked with persistence and progress - she returned to that same classroom we once shared- replacing veteran teachers while the school itself was morphing its curriculum. Mrs Skomial worked to assure that her students recieved the best education and opportunities available to them, and continues to do so. Seeing the difference in her approach to teaching her class makes me wish I had her as my own teacher because that would have been life-changing

3 1/2 years ago when our daughter when we approached our daughter about considering Morris School of Technology we were met with great apprehension because she would be attending a school she new little about. Since she had expressed an interest in becoming a teacher we encouraged her to pursue an interest in the Academy for Education and Learning that Jennifer is in charge of. I cannot tell you how positive and a rewarding experience it has been under Jennifer's tutelage for our daughter. Her students are truly prepared and have a significant head start as they head onto the college teaching landscape. For all that you given to your students in this fine academy, its a pleasure to wish you congratulations on this just deserved nomination. Wishing you many more years of "life changing" success.

Working as a school counselor at the Morris County School of Technology for the past 8 years, I have come to know Mrs. Skomial as one of the most caring, dedicated, and passionate teachers I have had the pleasure of working with. Her students not only learn from the material she teachers, but they emulate her commitment to her craft and the caring nature she innately exhibits. Mrs. Skomial works hard to create unique, creative lessons for her students and it shows. Her students are happy and love coming to school. As an education and learning instructor, Mrs. Skomial is shaping the way our future educators teach, impacting generations to come. I am thrilled that she can be the role model for our future teachers and students. Mrs. Skomial should certainly be chosen for this year's lifechanger of the year.

To put it simply, you cannot be around Jen and not be laughing or smiling or both. That attitude and positivity contributes to our school culture and learning environment. There are millions of teachers and educators. Then there are those extremely rare few who transcend the job and become something far greater, that one can't put into words. That's Jennifer.

Ms. Skomial builds partnerships within the educational community in the best interest of her students to expose them to a variety of learning opportunities. She is eager to network with educational colleagues which includes an Advisory committee for the Academy of Education and Learning. This committee is dedicated to enhancing the current educational program and includes students, community members, staff, and parents. This collaborative effort is another aspect of how Mrs. Skomial is a Life-changer.

Mrs. Skomial has been my daughter's teacher and mentor for the past 3 years. I constantly marvel at how my shy daughter has become a confident, expressive young lady and I know Mrs. Skomial has been a big part of that transformation. She is a fantastic role model not only in the classroom for the future teachers she is developing but also how she models herself in the community and her private life. She is able to relate and connect to her students on a level very few teachers are able to achieve. I truly believe that her success stems from this. I have no doubt her students have benefited from her in ways big and small. They will carry their experiences and time spent with Mrs. Skomial with them well into the future.

As the Supervisor of Humanities, I had the privilege of working with Mrs. Skomial as the program shifted CIP codes and took on a greater focus on education. When Child-Related Careers became the Academy of Education & Learning Mrs. Skomial was an integral part of the transition. Her vision for the program and her exceptional knowledge of pedagogical theory has resulted in a dynamic learning environment where students experience high levels of accountability and rigorous academic activity. Mrs. Skomial's high expectations are matched by the high degree of support and encouragement she provides for her students. Mrs. Skomial goes above and beyond to share her time with her students and she encourages them to step outside of their comfort zones and to take chances when preparing and delivering lessons. Mrs. Skomial has also shared her knowledge and expertise with her colleagues, as she has developed and led numerous professional development seminars. The students, the staff, and the school as a whole are fortunate to have Mrs. Skomial as part of our community; she truly is a "Life-changer!"

She has definitely impacted my life and made me a better student and person.

I am fortunate to be located right next to Jen Skomial and switness what her class does day to day. If given only one word to describe what Ms. Skomial does I'd say remarkable. She fosters an enthusiasm for early childhood education which filters into the pre-school her students run here. Jen Skomial's energy and leadership are beyond that of most teachers I have worked with over my extensive career. She has an engaging warmth about her that her students love but at the same time her professionalism sets the tone for each and every class. She is the ideal teacher and role model and an overall great co-worker. Very well deserving of this recognition!

Mrs. Skomial is the most amazing teacher I could have asked for. She has guided me through the past four years of high school by helping me with career choices, school choices, and always supported all of her students. She has taught all of her students in the academy to conduct themselves in a professional manner and how to be amazing teachers. She helps us get involved in the community, in our school, and get our foot in the door for internships/potential job opportunities. She always encourages us to follow our dreams and is always a shoulder to lean on in a time of need. Not only has she taught me to be myself and never change who I am for others, but she has also taught all of her students to speak their true colors and never settle for less than they deserve. She is an amazing role model and deserves the Lifechanger Award.

Emily Redmond Posted over a year ago

My name is Emily Redmond and I am a junior in the Academy for Education and Learning. When I think of someone who has changed my life, Mrs. Skomial is the first person that comes to mind. When I first entered MCST as a freshman I was culture shocked; I went from being in a school where with a graduating class of thirty-five to a school with a graduating class of around 200. As my academy teacher, Mrs. Skomial was the only teacher I would have all four years and I found extreme comfort in that knowledge the second she introduced herself. I used to be very shy and lacked self-confidence, but she quickly brought me out of my shell. Now I am teaching a preschool class by myself, giving tours of our preschool, participating in our Advisory Council, and I am also a peer leader. Mrs. Skomial is simply the most passionate person I know. Whenever she talks about teaching, helping others, or something as simple as holding the door for others, she has the power to make you equally as passionate about the topic. She continues to improve our academy in every way possible and she fully acknowledges that there is always room for improvement. Mrs. Skomial endlessly believes in her students, colleagues, and family. Mrs. Skomial saw something in me that no one else did. She brings out the best in me each and every day and I am the happiest when I am in her class. She is the kind of teacher that students countdown the minutes until they get to be in her class again. No matter how bad her day has been, her positive energy always persists. I feel so lucky that I get to say that I have had Mrs. Skomial as my teacher. Whether you have had her as a teacher or have simply just passed her in the hall, you can’t help but be inspired by her personality, the tasks she takes on, and her passion. Every single day she provides an example of the teacher I want to become. Anytime I question becoming a teacher, I think of Mrs. Skomial and I know that being a teacher is what I want to be. I will be lucky if I become half of the teacher, let alone person, that Mrs. Skomial is. The way she cares for her students can not be put into words and I hope she knows just how grateful we are for her. I genuinely hope that everyone has a teacher like Mrs. Skomial in his or her life because I know my life would not be as complete as it is without her in it.

It is difficult to put into words the effect Mrs Skomial has had on my daughter Emily. Emily went to Morris County School of Technology a young, nervous teen. Mrs Skomial has given her so much confidence in her teaching ability that she is leaving a confident future Special Education/Deaf Education teacher. She has made herself available to her students as a teacher, mentor, friend, and stand in parent when needed. Her guidance in their future academic endeavors as well as in life has been invaluable to all. She has not only taught them in the classroom, but has also taught them about giving back to the community by bringing them to Celebrate the Children, Diedre's House, Domestic Abuse shelters and food banks. As a parent, there aren't enough words to say thank you for all she does for her students.

Jennifer Skomial has shown a remarkable passion for teaching. She is an exceptional teacher who inspires students and colleagues. Jen has that special something that makes a connection and lasting impression on her students. She continually hones her craft by pursuing opportunities for her own professional development as well as encouraging her colleagues to do the same. She always puts her students at the forefront of everything she does. She incorporates real work experiences for them through her Advisory Council and partnerships with other learning facilities. Her partnerships with general education and special education facilities, provide multiple learning opportunities and gives her students valuable connections with educators and specialist in the field of education and childcare. She cares for each student in and out of the classroom, and they know they always have her in their corner. Jen has created an environment of students eager to be teachers and change the lives of students from the example they have received. At Christmas, Jen and her students did the shopping and wrapping of gifts for a school family whose mother is struggling with cancer. Because of her example, her students embraced this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of this family. Jen has proven that the world can be changed one student at a time. She is a Lifechanger, and it is my pleasure to wholeheartedly nominate her for this award.

Lynne Jackson Posted over a year ago

Dear Committee, It is truly an honor to recognize Jennifer Skomial as a nominee for the Life Changer of the Year Award. As her colleague of almost five years, I state with conviction that I have never worked with a more genuinely devoted teacher. Mrs. Skomial is innovative, creative, and collaborative. She consistently brings out the very best in her students and colleagues. In her first five years at Morris County School of Technology, Mrs. Skomial taught English. As per her supervisor, she hit the ground running implementing rigorous student-centered lesson plans meeting the needs of various types of learners to improve student achievement. Since September, 2013, Mrs. Skomial has been the teacher for the Academy of Education and Learning responsible for producing well-pointed students who continue their post-secondary studies in elementary education, secondary education, child psychology, social work and counseling. Tasked with this daunting and noble work, Mrs. Skomial is constantly reflecting on and refining her practice. She is vigilant in introducing her students to relevant and meaningful experiences inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to the theoretical coursework, students in all grade levels prepare lesson plans and teach in the on-site learning center. The Learning Center serves children three to five years of age, four days a week, for two hours a day. Student teachers conduct observations as well as track each child’s development over the course of the school year. Mrs. Skomial has partnered with the Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Deirdre’s House, Celebrate the Children, Lakeview Elementary School and other educational facilities so that her students can participate in off-site observations and broaden their perspectives on the field of education. All the while Mrs. Skomial brilliantly infuses the twelve Career Ready Practices and hones our students’ Twenty-First Century Learning Skills. Mrs. Skomial has been recognized by her colleagues and the administrative team as an exemplary teacher. She earned the distinction of being a Lead Teacher. In this critical role, Mrs. Skomial works with several teachers across diverse instructional areas assisting them with delivering high quality instruction. Novice and veteran teachers regularly seek her guidance on developing effective relationships with students, parents and colleagues, instilling high levels of student accountability, and creating authentic assessments to improve student achievement. As a leader, Mrs. Skomial has made the Lead Teacher role more dynamic and purposeful by creating/starting: the New Teacher Academy, a PLC Book Club, Pop-Up PD opportunities, the Dine ‘N Discuss concept, and an Educator Newsletter highlighting PD opportunities and resources. Mrs. Skomial serves on the Five-Year Strategic Planning Committee, attends PTO meetings as a teacher liaison, and has collaborated with almost every academy and trade program teacher at least once to implement interdisciplinary lessons. I respectfully encourage your committee to give serious consideration to naming Jennifer Skomial as a 2017-2018 Life Changer of the Year. Kindest regards, Lynne Jackson Principal
