Mr. Collins changed my whole entire life when I was in his class back in the early 2000's. He taught me about Monarch butterflies, how to garden, and the word metamorphosis. He is one of the sweetest, kindest, most Christian and most likeable teacher that there is in the world. He leaves some type of long-lasting impacton just about every student that he has. Every amazing teacher deserves a lifechanger award and he definetly is one of them.

David is a friend of ours from church, school, and agriculture. He has been teaching students for years about where their food comes from instead of just going to the store. I have heard parents talking about how great a teacher he is and how they were hoping to get their students in his class. His students plant a garden, raise the vegetables, eat them as part of their lunch program, have sold some to the community. Wonderful education to last a lifetime. He has also taught many people, young and old, in his Christian life by teaching the Word and living it. Lessons taught by example are remembering longer than just lessons taught by words.

Mr. Collins is definitely deserving of The Lifechanger Award. He taught my daughter in kindergarten, and alerted me to a possible learning disability. He suspected her inabilities, but continued to do all he could to enable her to excel. I have watched him at a distance and he has exhibited that same spirit with all of his students. There could be no one else more deserving than Mr. David Collins.

A little over 20 years ago I did my student teaching in the school where David taught Kindergarten at the time. I watched his interactions with colleagues and with his students in the hallways. It was always respectful and positive. With his students it was also constantly teaching, taking advantage of every opportunity to help them grow as citizens and life-long learners. This is even more impressive and important because the school was a very high poverty school. When I had the opportunity to do a full observation in his classroom, my respect for him as a person and educator grew even more. The constant teaching was impressive but also the things he involved his students in learning were impressive. I remember there being all types of hands-on Science things in the room and a garden outside. His interactions with his little students was always positive and respectful. He is the educator and person we all aspire to be!!

David Collins and I have been friends for approximately 50 years. In that time, I have watched David give of himself to all with whom he comes in contact. His compassion for others, especially youth has been demonstrated by his profession as a teacher, leader of a yearly church camp, Sunday School teacher, and councilor to many teenagers that sought him out for advice. Those teenagers have confidence in his wisdom because he had showered love upon them as young children.

Katie Haile Chandler Posted over a year ago

Mr. David, as I have known him for over 40 years, is a Godly man full of compassion and love for everyone from the youngest to the oldest. In his gentle, humble way he connects with and teaches the littlest amongst us and makes each one of them feel special and unique. Another day, you will find him teaching and admonishing and cutting up with the teens, reminding them too of their unique, individual place that God has for them in this world. With his colleagues, peers, friends, and family, I've seen him work hard, teach, laugh, guide, encourage, and love well all those around him. Mr. David is full of humble, self-sacrifice in giving to others continually. And let's not forget that behind every great man, there is an amazing woman! For my first memory of David and Carolyn both is how they gave up a "real" honeymoon just after they were married to join us at a summer church camp. They gave their first week of married life together to teach, encourage, build up, and pour their love into a group of teens! That selfless nature and giving attitude has characterized Mr. David all his life. This is a nomination well-deserved, a life-changer that I am grateful to know!

Have known David for close to 50 years. There’s not a finer father, husband, Christian leader, and teacher around. Has changed lives in all of his rolls by his tenacity, his integrity, his creativity in reaching children, and his leadership skills in touching all around him. It is an honor for me to nominate him for life changer of the year because he has spent his life changing lives in a positive way.

I have known David many years and observed his interaction with my three children and can heartily attest the positive influence he has had on them and countless others. He is a kind and caring individual always willing to go the extra mile. Being a teacher is not just a job for David but part of who he is! He is an example of a fine Christian man and father. I don’t think you could find a more deserving person to personify what a lifechanger should be. I unequivocally endorse him with my vote!

Mr Collins has touched so many lives beyond those in his classroom. My daughter was not in his class but has been influenced and loved by him in the short time she has been at this school. After discovering we had added bunnies to the coop...she was so excited! Mr Collins didn't hesitate and welcomed her with open arms when she asked to help feed and care for them. This meant so much to her and myself. Mr Collins is loved and adored by so many at Union and is without a doubt, the perfect recipient of this award. His passion to educate and broaden the minds of the children in his life is so admirable and just the tip of the iceberg of how amazing he is.

Samantha Rooks Posted over a year ago

This man has made such an impact for such a very long time!! Both of my girls were blessed to have Mr Collins as a 1st grade teacher! His impact is far reaching past the classroom! My girls love him and their knowledge of experience are far more than they would have ever had with me and my husband! To my youngest daughter, he is the end all be all. We thought, if we hear Mr Collins said one more time... well it extended past her ear with him! And almost 3 years later, she asked Santa for a chicken coop for her American Girl Doll! A chicken coop!! And she is very insistent that we have a full garden, she knows just what to do! Be teachers academics but the expertness are far reaching outside of ten classroom!

Patty Blaylock Posted over a year ago

I’ve know David Collins since I was in Jr High, that was in the 70’s. He and his wife Carol were younth leaders at the church I grew up in, Hartsville Pike Church of Christ. David was always there for our youth, gentle kind and loving and with firm consistency. We always knew when it was time to enjoy ourselves and knew when it was time to be serious. I spent my youth being mentored and taught many lessons of values and support. He was always willing to show us compassion no matter the situation. When I had a child of my own, David made sure he knew he was here for him and has remained involved any time we visit HP. Davis has influenced so many people’s lives, he definitely deserves this honor!

He taught me to spell metamorphosis in the first grade. He taught us lessons using songs in class and patriotic songs too. His butterfly launch is the coolest. I love going to his church camp and we get to do lots of fun things while learning about God.

Patti Thomas Posted over a year ago

David has taught many years to show his students the marvels of life with many projects including raising chickens and giving the eggs to those in need. He taught his students to raise a vegetable garden every year and then the students gave the produce to local food banks. He taught his students how to raise butterflies and then release them into the wild. He taught his students all things wonderful about first grade and came to cherish each student through the years. He is a loving husband and father. But most of all David Collins is a life changer because of his faith and devotion to God. He is responsible for church camp, winter camp and many other youth activities with his church family and goes on yearly missions trips to Central America to bring the Gospel of Christ to those who have never heard it. David Collins has spent his life being a life changer for children and adults. He is the life changer of the year.

When I first moved to Tennessee with my mom I was 6 years old and when I first started at union elementary it was very difficult for me to adjust,Mr. Collins was and still is such an amazing person who helped me in school. My favorite thing is still the butterfly launch it’s so special and I remember my first year doing it , it was so fun and Mr Collins put so much time and effort into it and made everyone so very happy. He’s always been such a caring person and teacher. Even now as a high school graduate I go to the school as much as possible to visit him and his garden and my other teachers .

David has had a tremendous influence on many of the children of Gallatin through teaching kindergarten and first grade for all of his teaching career. In addition to teaching the usual classroom material he has taught usable life skills through gardening and farm animal management. As a dedicated Christian he has also taught many children and young adults in Bible classes and Bible Camps through the years. Mr. Collins has changed the lives of not only his students, but of every life he has touched. His love for Jesus is exhibited in his lifestyle. He has a passion for each endeavor that cannot be matched. He has gone far beyond what is required of him to provide life-changing experiences for his students and children at church camps that they will never forget. Not only has he had an impact on the life of each of his student, but on their families as well. He has left a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Mike Crain Posted over a year ago

I have personally observed the impact of Mr. Collins's investment in the life of my grandaughter. While attending a school event, my grandaughter eagerly showed us the garden and green house, outlining all the steps of gardening and harvesting that she had personally engaged in under the direction and inspiration of Mr. Collins. She will never forget the excitement of the butterfly launch, caring for the chickens and rabbits, seeing how her shadow changes throughout the day. Mr. Collins is indeed a life changer. He is that special teacher who draws the student into experiencing the subject matter being taught, not just hearing about it. Through the testimony of another student, now attending college as an agribusiness major, it is again my personal observation of the life changing impact of Mr. Collins. It is obvious that his professional and personal investment over more than 40 years is growing fruit and lighting the path for his students for years to come. God bless you, Mr. Collins!

David Collins' reputation as an outstanding teacher and fine christian man is well established in Gallatin and throughout all of Sumner County, Tennessee. During his many years as a teacher he has guided and inspired hundreds of young people who have gone on to become responsible adults and upstanding members of the community. David has not only been a positive influence and role model for young people throughout his teaching career in public school, but also as a Sunday School teacher and director of the youth camp program at our church for many years. David Collins is already a "life changer" and receipt of this award would serve as a proper and well deserved acknowledgement of this fact.

Mr. Collins is one of the best teachers a child could have. So when my daughter recieved Mr. Collins as her first grade teacher we were very excited. He did not dissapoint us one bit. My daughter is now in 3rd grade and still to this day repeats lessons she has learned from him. He taught her responsibility from the Greenhouse program and the Chicken coops. She even taught me things about gardening that he taught her. He cares about each and every child at Union. I have had 2 kids graduate Union on to Middle school, 2 still at Union and he loves on every kid that says Hi to him requardless of if he had them as a teacher or not. I have the most respect for him. He highly deserves this award.

My daughter is so very lucky to have gone to an elementary school with Mr. Collins! The butterfly release every year combines science, music, and art in the best way. I have teared up every year- it's definitely a spiritual experience! Everyone who sees and participates in it will never forget it. The garden he planted at the park for the release is beautiful and another aspect to share the love of learning and volunteering. He also inspired us to have backyard chickens, and even took our eggs to the local food bank for us. I would drop off eggs in the pickup line in the afternoon for him to take! My words can't really communicate how special he is.

Mr. Collins touched my life deeply as a community member and I will never be the same. Last year, my husband and I launched a Monarch butterfly raising project, not knowing a thing about it. When we were put in touch with Mr. Collins, he mentored us and gave freely of his time and depth of knowledge. As a result of his strength of character and influence, we were able to pass on to children and adults alike the amazing life cycle of this creature. We are eternally grateful to have crossed paths with such an outstanding teacher who spreads good will throughout the community.

Ciara Salerno Posted over a year ago

I was in Mr. Collin's kindergarten class in 1998, it was an experience that truly changed my life. I was a shy little girl that felt like she had no voice with a passion for learning and Mr. Collins took a special interest in my passion. In kindergarten he taught us how to spell and pronounce words like metamorphosis and transportation all in relation to the special butterfly project he had his students do every year. He taught us how to type numbers in order on a computer and then put us up against third and fourth grade classes. When the school year ended his passion did not, he brought stacks of books and chicken eggs to my house for me and my brother to hatch. He was a man that truly loved his career and took a special interest in each child he came in contact with to learn how to better sculpt that particular individual. I am truly grateful to have been blessed with him as my first teacher. To this day when someone asks me who my favorite or most inspirational teacher was Mr. Collins is the only teacher that comes to mind.

I have worked next door to this man for the last 8 years and miss him so much right now; for me, the kids and our staff! It just seems that he is the glue that holds us all together and when there are things that get me bummed out or I am feeling overwhelmed, I always look to him and just a few words or his smile calms me to know that this too shall pass! He is such a loved educator and friend and his work continues through our school even as he heals at home right now!! We miss him dearly and know he is a prime candidate to win this LCOY award??

David Collins loves children, and it was very evident when I subbed for him, Kindergarten, at old Vena Stuart Elementary. During my time subbing, I never saw Mr. Collins show any difference towards the students he had, nor their parents. If anything, he showed just how concerned he was then, and is now about them. He is a great listener and encourager. David is a true believer in God, and uses the talents God has blessed him with to serve others. He is a very dedicated christian man. I am very thankful to God for having met him in the mid 90's. Thank you David for your examples of faith in God; your love and friendship in Christ.

As a former student at Union Elementary, I know firsthand just how much of an impact Mr. Collins has made and continues to make on students, faculty, and families alike. In my time at Union, I saw Mr. Collins spend countless hours not only working to foster a positive academic experience for students all over the school, but also to create a lifelong love and understanding of the outdoors and the natural world. Mr. Collins taught students how to grow and maintain gardens, as well as how to appreciate and take care of animals as he would organize the annual butterfly launch in which students would learn about the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly firsthand and then release the butterflies once they matured. I can also remember times when he brought in animals for the students to marvel at and learn about. He truly creates an academic environment in which student truly want to learn for a lifetime. Mr. Collins also showed an interest in helping to develop students into responsible, caring individuals and he has created a lasting impact on every student he has come across.

Mr. Collins is so precious to our family. We are so grateful for the guidance and inspiration he has blessed our entire family with. Our (now 5th grader) was so lucky to have Mr. Collins for his teacher in 1st grade. During that time I noticed a love of nature and farming emerging from my little boy like I had never seen before... he hopes to be an agricultural engineer one day and has not waivered a bit in the years since Mr. Collins shared that inspiration with him. He absolutely loved going to school every single day and that was because of Mr. Collins and his love for being at school everyday with his students. Simply said, we love his heart for our children!

Mr. Collins was my kindergarten teacher 33 years ago. His impact on me at an early age definitely helped me throughout my school career. There is no one anymore deserving than Mr. Collins. He also taught my son just four years ago. He makes learning fun and teaches in a unique way!

Nobody more deserving for this award than David. As a young educator, I couldn't ask for a better role model, professionally and personally, to learn from.

There is no way to describe everything this man does for his community! His butterfly garden at the park benefits young and old. The penny drive he conducts at Union has raised thousands of dollars that have helped Elementry children for years! His school garden and his chicken eggs feed the needy. I am blessed to call him my friend.

David Collins is the life changer, not just of a year, but of a generation and in more ways than one. Most people probably know him as a great teacher, citizen, neighbor and friend but for me, over and above all those things, he is a great example of what it means to be a follower of Christ, an encourager, a leader who stands firm but is oh so kind. He teaches his students what they need to become successful in academia but he also teaches them and others around him what it means to be successful in life.

David has been a steadfast example to many many young people over the years. There’s not a parent I know that would hesitate to have David in their Child’s presents. He has a calmness of authority the children feel safe and Confident in his presence. David has been an influence in changing young people’s lives both physically and spiritually.

David is one of the most well-rounded men I have ever met. He is a leader at our church and commands respect. I have attended several of the Butterfly launches and they are impressive to say the least. He is legendary in Sumner County for his innovative teaching techniques and his ability to impact students. He is very deserving of this honor and I can't praise him enough!

Mr. Collins was teaching at Vena Stewart 19 years ago when my oldest was a student there and now at Union Elementary STEM school where my youngest is a student. Neither of them had him as a teacher, but both have been greatly influenced by him none the less. From his bee hives he brought into school at Vena Stewart to his butterfly launch, school garden, and chicken coop at Union, both my kids have benefited from his vast knowledge and love of teaching children. He is an amazing teacher and definitely a Life Changer!

Always a kind, thoughtful man who encouraged children everywhere to love gardening and a love of vegetables. Always so kind whenever I saw him in the school (Union) that my son attended.

Where to even begin. My son was lucky to have Mr. Collins for first grade (he is now in 5th grade). The excitement on his face when he found out at registration that he was going to be his teacher was priceless. He loved to go to school. Mr. Collins was unlike any teacher he has ever had. Not only was he a wonderful teacher, his class was unique in a very special way. My son enjoyed the gardening the most. Mr. Collins has a garden and green house at the school and his class helped with it almost everyday. He also has chickens that he raises at the school. My son was eager to pick out and try new vegetables at the store because of this. He even started growing some things at home. They learned the word "metamorphosis", and he can still spell it fast without thinking. They were able to truly understand the meaning as they saw it first hand with the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies in their classroom. The school has a special event (The butterfly Launch) to release the butterflies. This involves singing, dancing, special shirts, and other things that are made by the students. Mr. Collins was also quite good at pulling loose teeth. He helped my son with two of his! He just has a very special personality and way about him. You can tell that he loves teaching and loves his students. I hope he knows how much everyone loves him and how much of an impact he has had on so many lives. He is beyond deserving of this!

Mr. Collins has taught both of my daughters. He has had a great impact on their lives through his teaching. He is definitely not an ordinary teacher. He includes vegetation, agriculture, and nature in his curriculum. These are things most kids in school do not have an opportunity to explore at elementary age. For that very reason he is definitely one of the most popular teachers at Union Elementary STEM. He has a way of forming connections with his students through his kindred spirit. He is most definitely a life changer.

Mr. Collins was my husband’s kindergarten teacher many years ago. When our daughter was accepted at Union, we were excited to know that she was in Mr. Collins class. From the garden to the butterfly launch, Mr. Collins makes learning fun!!!

I never had Mr. Collins, but I remember when I got to Union as a second grader I was so jealous that everyone else knew how to spell Metamorphosis and I didn’t. The butterfly launch that he put on every year astounded me even at such a young age. Mr. Collins is an amazing man who has impacted so many lives, and I’m so happy that I’ve had the privilege of knowing him.

Mr. Collins was my first grade teacher. I am now in 5th grade. Because of him, I love salad. He let us help grow the lettuce and other vegetables in the school garden and greenhouse. We then got to try everything. He also leads the Garden club, and raises the monarch butterflys for the butterfly launch. He is one of my best teachers. Because of him I also know how to make butter. He let us try lots of things. He is really a great teacher.

Mr. Collins is the very first teacher I had (1986). I remember walking into his then-kindergarten class not knowing what to expect but leaving wanting to hurry up and come back the next day. I remember telling my mom about all the things we did and who I met and I remember Mr. Collins just being fun. I remember how to make chocolate pudding because of him. I remember how a few songs because of him. I remember his classroom as if I was just there today. He gave me a foundation for learning and I appreciate it. He's left a great impact on my life in that now that I have a child in kindergarten, he's set the standard of what I should expect of the teacher. To me, that's life changing. He's been a blessing and he's been an inspiration. Sumner County is truly blessed to have him. #LCOY2018

She has never forgotten that and continues to work toward that goal. He is an excellent teacher and a good man. He most definitely deserves this award. #LCOY

Amanda Cooper Posted over a year ago

“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know that one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson As a parent, I pray each year that my children are placed in a classroom with a teacher who loves their job, loves their students, and has the ability to teach not only the mind of my child but touches their heart as well. Little did I know how God would answer that prayer last year as my daughter entered in the classroom of Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins met my daughter at the door on the first day as a stranger but won her heart by the end of the first day. Last year, my daughter experienced learning with different lenses than ever before. It wasn’t just trying to get from A to B by knowing the answers on a worksheet. It wasn’t about being perfect. She learned that a mistake isn’t the end of the world but the beginning of learning. Mr. Collins shows students that the joy is in the journey from A to B not just getting the answer. Students get their hands dirty as they help nurture a seed into a plant in the garden. They watch how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly by raising them in the classroom. They learn how to appreciate a book for the story and not just a list of sight words as Mr. Collins takes time daily to read from his rocking chair. Learning with Mr. Collins was never a chore but something my daughter looked forward to every morning. We rise to the expectations set for us by those who believe in us. I know that’s why students are so successful in Mr. Collins’ class. He sees the student they can be and pushes them to learn a little more. He sees the person they can be and pushes them to love a little more. My daughter knew Mr. Collins believed in her which in turn allowed her to believe in herself a little more. If leaving a legacy is making a contribution on future generations, Mr. Collins is creating a grand one. With each student he teaches, prays for, pulls a tooth for, encourages, and loves, Mr. Collins is making is mark on the world and I’m extremely thankful that my daughter’s life has been influenced by the love of Mr. Collins.

He has done so many wonderful things for our students and every year he finds something better. Many of the facility of Vena Stuart had children or grand-children that are products of Davids teaching. David is a marvelous teacher because he encourages curiosity and wonder in the classroom, especially with regard to science education. His garden, his butterfly project, and many other hands-on science lessons help children to use ALL of their senses to learn, and education research demonstrates that retention is greatest when more than just hearing and eyesight are engaged. The most important reason he is a great teacher, though, is his heart for his students. He wants every single child to succeed, to learn in a safe environment, and to feel loved and respected. He is modeling the exact behavior we want these children to live out as they grow to adulthood: he is a responsible adult who loves and respects everyone, and who uses his gifts to contribute to society. He is more than deserving of the Life Changer award!

My experience with Mr. Collins began in 1987 when he was my kindergarten teacher. I can remember always being eager to go to school because he made learning fun. We were not “stuck” inside a classroom all day. He made sure to incorporate the outdoors into our learning environment. We were taught very valuable life lessons from our teacher... things that you couldn’t learn in books. For example, Mr. Collins would always encourage us to try new things... I would have never eaten a turnip green even if my life depended on it, but he encouraged me to do so, unbeknownst to me that it would turn out being one of my favorite vegetables! Fast forward 21 years later, my daughter was placed in his 1st grade class at Union Elementary. He still had the same teaching basis that he used when I had him. He made learning fun for her and she loved going to school. She also was taught life lessons in the classroom that have forever changed her. Now, my little girl is a sophomore in high school and Mr. Collins still investes time into her by allowing her to come assist him in the classroom and garden so she can obtain SAE (supervised agricultural experience) hours for her various FFA degrees. Mr, David Collins has definitely been a life changer in this family for 2 generations!!!

He has a Servants heart and a love of teaching and truly deserves a lifetime achievement award.

As an elected official, I'm invited to a lot of schools and a lot of community events. However, none compare to the Butterfly Launch at Union Elementary. That is all credited to Mr. David Collins. I have had the great pleasure of seeing this man in his element at Union Elementary School. I have attended several Butterfly Launches, toured the gardens and chicken coops at UES, and heard stories about how great he is from my nephews who attend school there. As we continue to pray for his health right now, I would love nothing more that to see him honored with this award in which he is so incredibly deserving. #LCOY

I had the pleasure of witnessing the enthusiasm that Mr. Collins has for nature and educating and inspiring young people last year. I worked alongside him as a member of the City of Gallatin's 2017 pollinator committee. He passion is contagious, and I can understand precisely how and why the kids respond so positively to him. He is a truly gifted individual and very deserving of the honor of Lifechanger of the Year.

Working at a childcare facility In town, you hear the children talk about teachers, Mr. Collins comes up a lot. They talk about the activities he does with them, even children who don’t have him as a teacher talk about him. They learn not only educational material but life lessons that will help them forever. All the children love him! He does a lot of hands on actities with the children. He shows a genuine love for the children. What an outstanding role model for all the children to look up too.

He is the best man I know. My husband and I are foster parents and he is on the foster care review board. He has helped us so much in knowing what steps to take to help our kiddos. We also go to church with him and have been camp counselors at our church camp that Mr.David has ran for 30+ years and has impacted no telling how many people's lives. He married my husband and I because we met at that camp in highschool and he continues to be an influence in our lives.

David is a wonderful Christian man. As a Sumner County teacher I am very aware of all the great things going on in his classroom and how much he loves his students. As a parent, my children were blessed to spend a week each summer with David. He was the director of the church camp they attended every summer throughout their late elementary and middle school years. He was a positive influence for all the children who attended. Many young people became Christians on his watch thanks to the wonderful Christian example they saw in him. Mr. David Collins is the perfect example of what I consider a life changer. He exemplifies this in the classroom, in the community, and with his own family.

Mr.Collins is a very valuable teacher, father figure and mentor. I can remember in school my cousin would tell stories of Mr. Collins and how she loved his class, and I wished I had him. As an adult, I see kids speaking of not only how Mr. Collins made learning in the classroom interesting, but also gave them hands on experiences that they take with them. He is definitely one in a million as he goes far above and beyond his job in the classroom and I thank him for being such an instrumental part of his, as well as others, lives!

As I’ve read the hundreds of comments from current and former colleagues, students, parents of students as well as friends of Mr. Collins, recent and lifelong, i have a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the impact that David has made on so many lives, directly and indirectly, intentional and unintentional As a teacher, he has worked so hard to provide a high-quality education for children, with his first class of kindergarteners now approaching or at age 50. David has kept “up-to-date” on the latest trends and ideas in education (many so in 44 years in this profession) while always holding on to the belief that it’s all about children, putting them first, focusing - truly - on the “whole” child. David has taught current doctors, lawyers, business and government leaders, principals, teachers, farmers, accountants, engineers, parents, and grandparents, all of whom likely remember Mr. Collins as a great man who poured himself into his children...those in his classroom and those in other classrooms. David’s impact as a teacher has reached far beyond his own classroom and school. His children learned in truly genuine and authentic environments, whether in vegetable gardens, butterfly gardens, flower gardens, greenhouses, chicken coops, or nature trails. Mr. Collins was always a strong disciplinarian who immediately forgave misbehavior and gave children second chance after second chance. He praised children who may not hear praises from parents or other teachers, never giving up on the “tough-to-reach” kids while nurturing all children like one of his own. David allowed children to think and learn outside the box, engaging them in meaningful learning experiences that many would never have exposure to had they not been in his class or at his school. As a man, David has been a devoted husband, father, church leader, community icon, and role model for so many, epitomizing the servant’s heart that we all should have. Literally thousands of people have benefitted from the church camps that Mr. Collins has organized and facilitated for so many years as well as from the donations he makes to families, Gallatin C.A.R.E.S and the Sumner County Food Bank from his gardens and chicken coops. He has taught his students and colleagues the value of giving to those who are less fortunate, opening eyes of many to see the less fortunate around them and then do whatever it takes to address their needs. David’s work on a foster care review board reflects his dedication to serving children and making a positive difference in their lives. His participation in mission trips exemplifies the heart of a man who is passionate about positively changing the lives of people beyond his community, State, and, even, country. I know of no person who has served this world in greater and more diverse ways and with a bigger heart than Mr. James David Collins. He deserves this award and so many others. Yet, David will tell you that he already has his rewards, past, present, and one - in the future - waiting for him.

My child spent the summer before first grade praying that she would get Mr. Collins as a teacher. When she found out she did, she literally cried tears of joy! But that was just the start of a wonderful year with Mr. Collins. He believes in hands on learning and that empowering his students with responsibility in fact encourages them to be responsible. I saw my student jump up excited to go to school and watch monarch butterflies break from their cocoon, be a chicken checker and get the eggs for their chickens, plant new herbs and plants and watch the different stages of a seed and plant, learn about season plants they planted in their garden, and the list goes on and on. We are so grateful we got a year with Mr. Collins and believe he played a crucial role in my daughters hunger for knowledge and education!

Mr. Collins had both of my children for 1sr grade. Not an easy grade to teach, yet he was amazing with both of them. Hayden, my oldest, is very academically driven, yet is wild boy. Mr. Collins was stern but supportive of him throughout the year. Hayden grew tremendously under his guidance. Ainsley, my youngest, is the opposite. She has to try very hard to succeed academically but does so with a driven personality and responsibility. She grew just the same with the love and support from Mr.collins. Two different kids with different personalities and he was able to care for and help them in ways they each needed. Very proud to know him, to have my children have a strong supportive teacher. He was definitely a LifeChanger for us!

I had been familiar with Mr. Collins, and of how fond our community is of him, since I was in elementary school, but it wasn’t until my own daughter, who is now in middle school, had him as a teacher that I came to know personally what an impact he has on his students. Mr. Collins’s class is a safe zone in which curiosity is never squelched. My daughter enjoyed finding odd, wiggly, furry, gooey and otherwise strange things on the ground outside. Recalling that not all teachers are as open to things that might be considered icky, when she would tell me that she was taking them to school I would get a little nervous and ask her if she was sure that her teacher wouldn’t mind. No matter what she managed to take to school, she never came home feeling as if it had been a mistake to be curious and to want to learn about new things and to share her knowledge with others. Like so many other lucky kids, my daughter got to experience the essence of Mr. Collins, and what should be the essence of education-being curious, continuing to learn, and sharing knowledge with others. In our case, my daughter was able to pass along what she learned from Mr. Collins internationally. We shared with friends in Germany the information we learned about monarch butterflies from the butterfly launch put together by Mr. Collins. They were so intrigued that they put together a presentation about butterflies in Europe that we were able to share with Mr. Collins’s class. By sharing his interest in butterflies, Mr. Collins initiated an exchange in which people from different continents learned about each other’s habitats and cultures. Our local park’s butterfly garden, also a product of Mr. Collins’s love of sharing knowledge with others, has allowed me, and I’m sure many others, to inform friends of the life cycles and travels of monarchs as we exercise or take leisurely strolls. These are just a few examples of the thousands of lives touched by Mr. Collins in our community and beyond.

He learned to write by writing about his daily experiences in the garden in a journal, which I still have even though he's in 8th grade. David Collins has been a life-changer for two generations when it comes to my family. He taught all three of my children. He loved them, he challenged them, he taught them at their level, and pushed them beyond. David instilled a drive for learning in my oldest child, a love of language and music in my middle child, and a love of science in my youngest. The "life-changing" came in stages with them. It's like baking a cake. The ingredients by themselves aren't much, but put them together with just the right heat, and a delicacy emerges. What about the second generation? That would be me, the dad. When I went back to school and pursued my own teaching degree as a 35 year-old, David was my quiet encourager. His belief in his profession- that it was the most important one on earth- spurred me on. 19 years later, I still believe it.

Where do I even begin with how this man is a life changer? He is by far, one of the hardest working men I know. Not just inside the classroom where his passion for teaching kids is evident, or the walls of the school where so many kids (even those that didn’t have him as a teacher) greet him lovingly, but beyond! Beyond our school grounds, where he works so diligently in our garden and greenhouse and the chicken coops. Beyond our school, he is a Legend! A man who donates freshly grown produce items to the local food bank, to the local Sr. Citizen home and to even neighbors surrounding our school. Fresh eggs are definitely shared with the organizations mentioned above and our school families. He works beyond what is required, even during breaks where he serves others less fortunate with his church and church family. In his 44 years of teaching, so many lives have been changed! You need only greet him once and you know he is a genuinely, kind, selfless man. He teaches his students so many fundamentals that have been gone from the classroom for many, many years. Students that had him in the past are bringing their children to our school, in hopes that their child will have the same experience thay had in a classroom led by Mr. Collins so long ago. Though standards and other things have changed over the years, he has changed as needed, but stays true and strong to those students that sit at a desk in his classroom! Mr. Collins is a lifechanger, one that truly deserves the honor of the Lifechanger of the Year Award!! He has definitely changed my life for the better by knowing him!! He has taught me to serve the community selflessly, he has taught me that your best is always the better way to go. Mr. David Collins gets my vote for LifeChanger of the Year!!! Mr. Collins started teaching at Union elementary when I was in kindergarten. He instantly changed the culture of Union in a positive way. He started a garden that every student loved to help out in. I remember Mr. Collins caught a raccoon one night and brought it to school the next morning and let all the students look at it and gave us a lesson on capturing wildlife and safely releasing them. Every time I come back and visit Union, I always make it a point to see Mr. Collins and so do many of my peers. Even my parents make a point to go see Mr. Collins when they come back and visit. Mr. Collins has singled handedly changed more lives at Union Elementary in his 15+ years at school than all the teachers there combined. Even students that didn’t have his class learned something from Mr. Collins. Ask anybody from the city of Gallatin about Monarch butterflies, and they’ll tell you anything you want to know about them. That’s because of Mr. Collins. If anybody has ever been as deserving of this award, it’s Mr. Collins. He’s the definition of a life changer.

Mr. Collins is not only a life changer at his school but in his community with children and adults of all ages. He worked during his summers extremely hard with teenagers at his church’s summer camp. Always giving if his time and energy.

David Collins taught all three of our children in first grade. More than a solid education from books, he also taught them a lifetime of valuable lessons and experiences unparalleled like the hatching of baby chicks, harvesting of peanuts and asparagus, morals, values and work ethic. One would be hard pressed to find another man as selfless and humble who has helped beautifully shape so many children across our region. The mold has been broken. There will only ever be one David Collins, but oh the people he has inspired across decades to try and be like him!

Becky collins Posted over a year ago

David Collins is a master educator who changes the lives of his students, as well as other teachers. He willingly shares information and techniques with anyone who asks. He has guided many pre-service teachers in their practice experience and, through them, touched the lives of countless more students. We have collaborated for 20 years on STEM projects in our classrooms, doing science in kindergarten and first grade long before it “was cool” to do so. Even after 39 years in my own classroom, he teaches me new things. He has changed countless lives in many positive ways! And now ‘his school children’ are changing lives for the better because of what he taught them, both academically and through character education.

David is truly a one of a kind teacher. Students get a hands-on approach in learning. He values the experiences rather than the traditional classroom curriculum. An engaged child is a happy child in Mr. Collin’s class. He is a legend in our county, and I am privileged to work with him everyday! Mr. Collins has a servant heart always giving more than the average person in time. He worked tirelessly in helping gain the funds for our school’s agricultural campus. Every weekend, evening and summer you will find Mr. Collins working in the garden, greenhouse, and hen coop. His students, as well as the school get many opportunities to get their hands dirty and learn the process.

Mr. Collins, You might not remember me as I sat in your classroom over 25 years ago, but I will forever remember you and the Lastig impression you left on me as A small child. I walked into your classroom knowing not only Noone but with a very limited vocabulary as my primary language was Spanish. I remember vividly how you helped me through my journey in learning English and getting situated in a classroom setting. I remember you introducing me to the class, making me feel special and no different from the others, I remember the penny drive, sitting down at a computer to work on my English and most importantly I remember your compassion. I was very blessed to have you as my teacher and I am so excited to see you are continuing to do great things. You are an amazing person and you are serving your purpose on earth as a teacher. Congrats, one of many of your proud students.

David Collins is the most dedicated, inspiring, and giving man I’ve had the privilege to know. He has been dedicated to the education of children for 40+ years in Sumner County. His love of nature and growing things has inspired many of these students to work in the school garden or gather eggs when it’s so hot they complain that it’s too hot outside to play at recess. David’s giving spirit goes far beyond the many hours spent in our garden or greenhouse on weekends and vacations but he also gives tirelessly of himself to the youth at his church. He plans all the youth activities and camps at Hartsville Pike Church of Christ in Gallatin, Tennessee. Through all his many achievements, David Collins has changed the lives of many young and old.

I have experienced Mr. Collin’s teaching methods as both, a parent of one of his students, and now as a co-worker. I once told my son that he would learn things from this man that he would carry with him for the rest of his life. Things that books cannot teach. Things you learn from being hands on in your environment. I assure you, he did not disappoint. My son is now in the fourth grade and still refers to things he learned from Mr. Collins in the first grade and I predict he will still do so into middle, high school and even college. He has left an impression on him and so many others. I am not from the Gallatin area, so I did not have the pleasure of having Mr. Collins as a teacher; however, there are lessons he has taught me as an adult working alongside him that I have put into practice in my own classroom. You cannot be in his presence and not be changed for the better.

You would be surprised at how many children know nothing about our food source. They have the opportunity to be hands on from learning about gardening, gathering eggs daily and even learning the cycles of the Monarch Butterfly. Mr David Collins is a Life Changer for many, but is a life changer for my son as a first grade student in 2009-2010 and his years since having David as a teacher. He gave my son confidence and ignated a fire for nature and for learning by making classroom experiences both relevant and fun. Mr C's dedication to teaching the next generation about the importance of sustainability through core subjects using the outdoor school garden and chicken coop as his outdoor classroom was a huge part of who my child is. My son learned the importance of hard work and dedication, aka grit, from Mr Collins and his impact will forever be apart of my child's character and outlook on his role to help the Earth and use goods to help others. Furthermore, his dedication to teaching students and adults about the importance of pollinators and the process of pollination to our world is another example of going above and beyond what our state standards state and take learning to a whole different level through this project and the previously mentioned project for his first graders. His efforts to encourage his students to learn about the life cycle of monarchs by harvesting them in the classroom and hosting a schoolwide monarch migration launch each year is life changing not only to all the students who are a part of these activities in the classroom, bbutnto the community, and ultimately to the world as thousands of monarchs must've pollinated thousands upon thousands of plants along their migration from middle TN to Mexico and/or Canada over the many years of the Monarch Migration at Union Elementary. Mr Collins will forever be a part of who my child is and whom he will become, but his impact to our community and our world goes way beyond my child. He is a definite life changer and deserves to be honored as a Life Changer of the Year. David Collins has touched more lives with his dedication to showing others love and the importance of contributing to their community and their world. Each morning after saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag, Mr Collins leads his students in singing "America the Beautiful". To me, this is a testimony of a man with a servant heart doing his part for a land he loves and his trust in the future generations of our world. David Collins is a Life Changer indeed!

Mr. David Collins is ‘that teacher’ - you know - that teacher that your child always remembers!! The one that teaches outside in the garden, in the classroom and launches Monarch Butterflies! Every elementary school should be blessed with a teacher like Mr. Collins.

David Collins is truly deserving of this award. He is a positive influence on the kids with both academics and life skills. He instills a love for learning in students at an early age, and motivates them to strive for success. Not only is he a great teacher, but he is a wonderful colleague. The very first time I met him, I was a brand new teacher. New to the school, and all around nervous and excited about my upcoming journey. He was working in the garden, but he walked over to welcome me. He made me feel at home immediately, and we chatted about school, vegetables, and everything in between. After a full day of getting my new classroom together, I came back to my car, and hanging on my door was a sack full of fresh green beans. It’s the little gestures and moments in life that mean the most. Mr. Collins has the kindest heart, and deserves recognition for his dedication and passion, as an educator. This man genuinely touches the lives of students, colleagues, parents, and other members of the community on a daily basis. David Collins is, without a doubt, a life changer. #LCOY

Mr. David Collins is an incredible human and the most fabulous teacher

Bobby Rominger Posted over a year ago

Mr. Collins amazes parents with his ability to use the garden and greenhouse for every aspect of his classroom. Students count different plants or vegetables then add the totals together. He then has students write about what they did in the garden for another lesson. All the while he teaches them about science but so many other lessons are incorporated into this ranging from math to spelling.

He was a teacher when I was in Kindergarten and I love him then. My sweet son had the pleasure of having him as well. The main thing he wanted him to leave him with was confidence and to speak his voice. What a wonderful teacher and friend.

As a parent I have never met a teacher who cares so much about not only his students but anyone he comes across. My daughter, Therese, who is now in 4th grade had Mr. Collins as her 1st grade teacher. She learned more then just what was in books, she learned that life is all around. From gardening and using the land to provide to setting butterflies off to protect a species. As a teacher he instills life lessons. He is tough but has a heart in the classroom and outside. He knows every child (even the ones he never had in class and he has taught for longer then I have been alive!) Just that fact that my family would see him while out to eat and he would just come sit and remember not only my girls name but mine and my husbands and be able to remember specific traits of each my girls and us(And he only had one of my girls as a student). His impact on anyone he meets is honorable but his humble character makes him one of the most incredible people in this world.

It's not secret that he could have retired years ago. He enjoys coming to school each day and making a difference in the lives of our students. We are lucky to have him on our staff!

I cannot think of another human being on the planet that deserves this award more than Mr. David Collins. While neither one of my boys had Mr. Collins in 1st grade while attending Union Elementary, he has still touched both of their lives in ways that only someone as special as him can. Mr. Collins is just that kind of a person, that kind of a teacher. He cares for ALL of the kids, whether they are in his class or not. He is a teacher at heart, in his inner core, and a special one at that. He is the kind of teacher that every parent dreams of having for their child and hopes that there is a school full of. I can say for certain that my children’s elementary school experiences would have been completely different if not for Mr. David Collins, and not for the better. Mr. David Collins is the walking, talking example of a “life changer”, the epitome of that very phrase.

I have had the pleasure as a parent and employee at Union to witness Mr.Collins at work. Not only the students in his class but throughout the school love him. He gives his time and talents freely. He encourages and brings the best out in his students and most every one who encounters him. He offers ways for others to give back to their communities either through his many gardens or his monthly visits at the food bank. He never misses an opportunity to teach and touch lives. He helped shape Union STEM into the incredible school that it is today. He not only teaches reading and math but genuine life lessons that shape children to be their best.

David Collins inspired my son, Landon, to achieve great things in school. In 1st grade, Landon was challenged to make the academic top 30 at Gallatin High. 11 years later, Landon did just that and remembered what Mr. Collins challenged him to do and be. My son learned so much about hard work in the classroom and in Me. Collins’ garden, a work ethic that has served Landon so well through his life. Mr. Collins has changed lives of students, other teachers, and children in foreign countries through mission trips for over 40 years. He deserves this award and more!

Two of my children have had the pleasure of being in Mr. Collins’ 1st grade class. He has an amazing amount of patience and love that he lavishes in every student. Every morning his children gather around him to tell him their most important information of the day. I am always amazed how he can acknowledge each one with a touch, hug, kind word and still get them calmly ready for the day’s lessons. He is adds so much to our schoolwith his willingness to share his knowledge with every child, be it in the garden, collecting butterflies for every classroom, or just a kind word in the hallway. He is loved by so many.

Mr. David Collins has positively affected the lives of over 1,000 students in his class for over 44 years and as many others who were not in his class. He is a tremendous teacher and role model for students. His students learn hands-on by working in the Union STEM vegetable garden, greenhouse, chicken coop, flower garden, and butterfly garden. Food produced from his garden and chicken coop are donated to Gallatin CARES and the Sumner County Food Bank. David is such a giving, nurturing teacher; a true LifeChanger.
