Janice Smith was nominated by her principal, Yvonne Stokes.
Mrs. Smith puts others before herself, as she goes about her day helping students, parents and staff. No assignment is too much or too small, because she truly wants to make a beneficial difference in the lives of students.
Fisher Magnet Lower Academy recently purchased a washer and dry to meet student needs. Mrs. Smith was one of the first to use the machines, and made sure that students had clean clothes to wear every day. She also manages the Weekend Backpack program, which provides food for students and their families on the weekend. During holiday times, Mrs. Smith is aware that families are in need of holiday gifts, extra food, or new toys, so volunteers collect donations to help those who are struggling in the community.
"We often speak about Mrs. Smith as being the person that brings the 'fun' to our school," Stokes said. "She takes leadership in directing schoolwide programs and assisted in developing our first school choir. She also sees opportunities to take students on field trips to help build the background needed for learning. On a daily basis, she makes a beneficial difference in the lives of students."
Mrs. Smith has taken the initiative to have planned interventions for groups of students who need extra direction to manage their behaviors for success. Her attention to the students helps staff maintain orderly classrooms and environments conducive to learning. She positively adds to the development of the school's atmosphere. She teaches students to distinguish between right and wrong, and is a person with great integrity.
"As a professional, Janice Smith is valuable," Stokes said. "She works with our school-based budget and has proven her worth as an excellent worker."
