Yolander Pittman was nominated by her superintendent, Christa Warner.

Ms. Pittman is truly a LifeChanger for her students at Hazelwood East High School. As the principal, her priority is for every student to graduate college or be career ready. Ms. Pittman understands the importance for every student to attend post-secondary school and offers a variety of options for her students. Under her leadership, the school motto is now "Career is our Focus and College is our Choice."

Ms. Pittman has created specific pathways for her students, whether their goal is to attend a four year university or join the military. Students are expected to take courses connected to a career, and make a decision on the level of education they will focus. Any student interested in going to college is encouraged to take honors or AP courses and PLTW courses connected to their career path. Students interested in technical programs are encouraged to do a half day at North County Technical School. Students interested in going to a career out of high school are encouraged to do internships and work towards getting certifications from the community college before graduating.

All students take the Missouri Connections Survey and choose a career path based on their results. There is a counselor and administrator connected to each career path to monitor the success of each student. Students are given options for specific elective classes based on their career path, and each career path has a club connected to it. Though students have the opportunity to change career paths, very few do because their interests are aligned with specific courses. Students meet with teachers who are connected to their career path for 90 minutes each month. During this time, students participate in enrichment activities related to their career path such as listening to guest speakers, watching videos, and attending field trips related to their career path. The teachers also review classes to ensure students are on track with their career path.

The school has a partnership with Washington University, which provides a College Counselor to assist those students interested in going to college and Workforce Development to administer the Workkeys Assessment and assist those students who want to go to a career. They also partner with recruiters from each branch of the military to work with those students interested in going to military, North County Technical School to provide training for those students interested in technical careers, and the community college to assist with completion of the enrollment and registration process.

Students going to a four year college or Technical school are encouraged to take ACT, students going to community college take Accuplacer, students going to military take ASVAB, and students going to a career take the Workkeys Assessment. Teachers are also taking courses through St. Louis Community College to become certified to teach more dual credit courses. The goal is for students to take these courses and graduate high school with fifteen college credits. The school also partners with St. Louis Community College so students can take Early College/Dual Enrollment courses, which will allow participating students to graduate high school with a certification or Associate’s Degree.

St. Louis Community College also does a week-long career path camp for students in 10th and 11th grade. Students tour the campus and department connected to their career path and are able to speak with instructors in different departments about what they should know and be able to do in order to be successful in college. Each year, Hazelwood East High School holds a community outreach night that brings organizations together to showcase summer camps, internships, college recruiters, human resource departments from companies such as: Express Scripts, UPS, FedEx, Ameren, Laclede Gas, Dierbergs, Schnucks, and others. They also invite the elementary and middle school students in the community.

"Yolander has truly been a LifeChanger at Hazelwood East High School," Warner said. "By understanding her students’ interests and goals she has developed pathways for each student to continue their success after graduation."

Mrs. Pittman is a change agent for the Hazelwood School District. Her grasp of the needs of the students she serves exceeds expectations. I have witnessed the impact that her career path vision has had on students even at the middle school level. She empowers students to dream big and then find the pathways to complete their goals. She is not hesitant to share her own path and the obstacles and success she had along the way. Her candid conversations with students and staff are effective and necessary. I am excited about her nomination for this award. She is servant leadership in action!

Congratulations, Mrs. Pittman, on this well-deserved honor. It was truly an honor and a privilege to work under your leadership ten years ago as I transitioned to becoming a new administrator in Riverview Gardens. Your work ethic, commitment to scholars, passion for college and career readiness and data driven decision making are still and will forever be a part of my leadership toolbox. I am eternally thankful for your mentorship, but even moreso for who you are as a woman of faith and your continuous presence in my life. You are a life changer because of your commitment to education, as a whole, as well as, every scholar, parent, community member and colleague. You possess the type of dedication to scholars and colleagues that extends beyond the typical work day or school event. Thank you for always being a model of innovation and excellence in educational leadership.

When I walked into my Chemistry class in the fall of 1992, I didn’t know that I was walking into my “life changer” classroom. From 1992 to the present, Mrs. Pittman has been my teacher, mentor, high school college counselor (she served as one to many students while being a classroom teacher) and now supervisor. Mrs. Pittman was one of the most challenging teacher that I had in high school. She was firm, challenging to most and did not relax her standards when it came to her classroom expectations, but that didn’t overshadow her compassion and dedication for her students and their success. As I approached my senior year, I was a student who had a desire to go to college but was unsure of the process for getting there. Mrs. Pittman positive influence to students and parents went beyond the four walls of the classroom. She exposed me to the various colleges and careers and made the dream of being the first in my family to go to college a reality. As a first generation college student, my parents and I were unaware of the process for college admission. Mrs. Pittman guided me and my parents through the college admissions process and stood in as a liaison to ensure that I had a post-secondary plan in place. Although she wasn’t my guidance counselor, she stepped in and provided college and career counseling to me throughout my junior and senior year in high school. As I journeyed through my process, Mrs. Pittman continued to monitor my progress and provide unwavering guidance throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Now as the principal at Hazelwood East High School and my supervisor, she continues to be a visionary that is student driven. She is innovative and always working to enhance processes so that students can maximize their high school experience and be able to meet the demands the colleges and employers. Mrs. Pittman has always stretch students to be the best that they can and when they don’t know what that look like, she creates opportunities to expose students to the world of careers and opportunities within the school setting.

As a newer teacher to the district, Mrs. Pittman has had a tremendous impact on my growth and development. My first year as the Journalism teacher at Hazelwood East High School, she often checked on me to see how things were going and if there was any way that she could support my growth. That was the first time I ever had a principal take time out of their busy schedule to check on my well-being. She also suggested helpful strategies that I implemented in my classroom. During our staff meetings, Mrs. Pittman always highlights the positive. She's shown that she cares about us collectively and individually, and wants us to succeed. She creates a sense of unity among our staff. Being fairly new to the district, I've faced some challenges that Mrs. Pittman has helped me overcome. I've never had a principal who was as supportive, approachable, and caring. As an educator, I've experienced six different principals and Mrs. Pittman is by far, the best I've had. She goes above and beyond her call of duty and is very supportive of our staff and students. I love and appreciation great leadership and there's no one more deserving of this award than Mrs. Pittman.

As I have watched Mrs. Pittman over the past year and a half, she not only talks the talk, she walks the talks. She is in early and out late. She never ask you to do anything that she is not willing to do herself. She believes in the success of all children even when they don't always make it easy. Innovative is her "middle name" understanding there needs to be multiple ways to reach students. It has been a privilege to work with and learn from her; I am a better professional because of the interactions I have had with her. CHANGING LIVES IS JUST WHAT SHE DOES!!!!

Mrs. Pittman has been and always will be an advocate for the success of each and every student in her building. Her number one goal is that the students have every chance and every opportunity to do what they want once they leave Hazelwood East High and are on the right path to reach their goal. The constant progression and evolution of the carrier path program at the high school is just one example of this. The students at Hazelwood East High look at Mrs. Pittman as a role model not only for her successes in life but for the passion she has for job and for the students that go to East High. Her colleagues, friends and the students, (both current and past), all respect her and recognize that she has changed their lives in some way for the better. I personally have had my life changed by this remarkable woman and could never thank her enough for the opportunities she has given me. I nominate Yolander Pittman for the Life Changer of the Year Award....

If there is one thing Ms. Pittman has changed in my life, it was to bring a sense of peace to the workplace. In my day-to-day opportunities working with Ms. Pittman, she has been honest instilling a sense of confidence in her faculty, staff and students. She believes it is possible for everyone to learn. Whether a teacher or a student, we all have the opportunity to grow beyond the limitations we place upon ourselves. Through communication with administration, faculty and staff, she delegates responsibilities instilling a sense of ownership for everyone. She has a serious commitment to the cause of public education, but not so serious, she cannot laugh at herself or with others. She encourages me to be positive in creating new and different lessons which will inspire my students from day to day.

I had the pleasure and honor to have Yolander as a middle school assistant principal and principal during my almost 30 year career. I have never worked with an individual who gave everything she had, professionally and personally to ensure every student she encountered had the opportunities to be as successful as they could be. From individualized student-teacher support to athletic-academic support, I have the utmost respect for Yolander. Although I have not spoken or worked with her for several years, I have no doubt she is still so very dedicated to doing anything and everything which is best for “our kids”!

The students don’t have to wonder if she cares, because she shows them everyday. We need more principals like her. I know that education is the key to success, and, Yolander, is willing to help anyone that doesn’t mind a little hard work, to get that key, or at least show them how to make a key. Yolander Pittman is one of St. Louis Community College’s most exceptional partners in success. STLCC concurrent programming at Hazelwood East has flourished under her leadership; providing students the opportunity to earn six college credits toward their baccalaureate degree as early as their sophomore year via dual credit. Hazelwood East leads the district in having four instructors MDHE certified to teach dual credit for the College with more to come. Her students are also participating in early college programs at the Florissant Valley campus with aspirations to complete associates degree or career credential prior to high school graduation. Her ability to meet her students and parents where they are and her foresight to see things not how they are but what they will be is the key to her success. We need more leaders like her in our schools. The great author Henry David Thoreau said,” Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.” Ms.Pittman is a “Life Changer” because she sows seeds in our children that are coming to fruition every day in our future CEOs, educators, engineers, scientist, ..etc. We are honored to partner with such an amazing women.

Life Changer of the Year In my experience, Yolander Pittman is well deserving of the title “Life Changer of the Year”; However, I can add to that title “A Life Changer of My Personal and Professional Years!” Unfortunately, at the time during the 90’s, I was a reflection of many functional behaviors our youth exhibit today. Yet my encounters with Ms. Pittman remain true Ms. Pittman always took extra time to pour knowledge, care, and concern into a young, afraid and many times lost African-American girl. In my experiences, Yolander Pittman is the “Epitome of Urban Education, Leadership & Student Success.” Ms. Pittman always went the extra mile in serving urban educational communities taking into account the whole being, in the form of leadership she modeled and communicated practical outcome worthy expectations, and most importantly, Ms. Pittman has become one of my top and most influential role models when it comes educational success full circle. I can recall instances in the hall or sometimes class conferences of Ms. Pittman pulling me aside noting and instructing me on what and how to do things better. Keep in mind, this occurred not as a direct student in her class; but, as a student that she took time to know in passing as she did with many students attending high school during the 90’s and still to date! Ms. Pittman made it very clear that she had high expectations for myself and my peers. She constantly checked to keep us on the correct path or when necessary redirect us constantly, and often nurturing as the role of concerned parent in and out of school in countless manners. I would later successfully graduate from high school in 1992 as a young mother. In my adult years while transitioning from a career goal in the field of Criminal Justice and Probation & Parole to education- who would have thought! I had no clue that I would eventually cross paths with Ms. Pittman again. Only this time, I had absorbed many of those life and instructional lessons that Ms. Pittman instilled in me as a mentor and leader. In 2003, I began my journey as an educator and as life would have it Ms. Pittman was now my instructional and professional leader. Ms. Pittman always modeled excellence in guiding my focus and final goals to pursue education as a career. Ms. Pittman provided and instilled an educational data driven leadership blueprint in a way that she persistently questions with her southern accent “Clark- how can you tie that in to manifest in the successful results for students?” It’s a guiding principle I incorporate today. Ms. Pittman always focused on building and unpacking relationships with students, family, colleagues and the community. Whether we were meeting to discuss data, creating Flex-Friday teams, planning a student celebration or academic intervention it was always done with excellence in the best interest of the student. The formidable years of my educational career has forever been changed, grounded and enhanced because I have had the privilege and honor to learn from Pittman–how to create an environment richly focused on students individual success. While some may say that all educators serve in ways more than those noted- there is a huge distinction between an educational leader who does and the educational leader who stands out with distinction. Ms. Pittman is known as a pure leader, teacher friend, mentor, life changer, community driven person with distinction. In closing it is surely, no surprise in Ms. Yolander Pittman being nominated for the esteemed honor and recognition of Life Changer of the Year- she has changed hundreds of lives every year! Mrs. Pittman is a wonderful woman, a great role model to all women, young ladies, little girls, even young men. She won't give up on you and won't let you give up on yourself. I have witnessed how she's changed a ladies life so much to the point this lady was searching high and low. The lady saw Mrs. Pittman walking in the mall, yelled her name and told Mrs. Pittman how she changed her life. Mrs. Pittman use to go to her house and make sure she went to school everyday, made sure she graduated on time. She said remembering Mrs. Pittman and how hard she worked to help her acheive, that alone stoped her from completely giving up on life when her grandmother passed. She cried thanked Mrs. Pittman and gave the biggest hug she could. This is an amazing woman that does all she can for everyone.

It is with absolute pleasure that I nominate my sister-n-law Yolander Pittman for the Lifechanger of the year award. Yolander has always been an intricate part of the family and is definitely the "go-to" for any and everything. She has always been willing to donate her time and talents to helping mentor, guide and support family and friends along this road called life. She wears so many hats within our beautiful family and I can honestly say she wears them well. No matter how busy or tied up she is in her own life she never turns any of her nieces, nephews or great-nieces or great-nephews away. As I have watched her care for her ailing father, I see how compassion looks in practice. Yolander doesn’t just talk the talk but she walks it in every way. Anyone that knows her knows that she has a heart of gold and tries to make everyone around her a better person. She's a phenomenal wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister/sister-n-law, aunt, and friend. I have no reservations in recommending her for this awesome award. Quite honestly I can't think of anyone more deserving of receiving this award than Yolander. She is hands-down the true definition of a "LIFECHANGER".

Congratulations to my daughter for this amazing honor. I have seen her attempt to change the lives of her students. There was a day that I was with her when she went to a student’s job. She demanded the student return to school to finish her last class in order to graduate. She had to go several times but did not stop going until the student returned to school and graduated.

Mrs. Pittman is always supportive!! She provides a variety of recommendations when offering guidance and assistance in promoting career endeavors. This guidance has not only been extended to me, but among other colleagues. In addition, she goes beyond her duties to assist students to pursue their goals and aspirations. She provides a variety of resources and opportunities for students to reach beyond any of their limitations. Mrs. Pittman's nomination is well deserved and mostly importantly, she should definitely be the Life Changer Award Recipient!

Mrs. Pittman is truly a gem to the education community. She was she my Chemistry teacher in High School (years ago) and served as a principal at the middle school where my daughters attended. She currently is a Building Principal in one of the buildings I have had the opportunity to work in. She whole-heartedly inspires her students and their parents to be their best. I have seen her go above and beyond on multiple occasions. She literally knocks on doors of her students to encourage them to come to school and complete the requirements for graduation. Mrs. Pittman wants for all those around her, students, their families, and staff to be successful. She is definitely a LIFECHANGER!!

Yolander Pittman has been a life changer for my school, Hazelwood Central Middle School, and my personal professional life as well. When Mrs. Pittman arrived at our school, we were a frustrated, burnt out staff that had been spinning our wheels for years. I had reached a decision that I wanted to leave the education field after more than 15 years as an educator because I felt the effort was futile in the current atmosphere of my school. I started to look elsewhere, but gave it one more year under a new principal. I'm so grateful for that year. Mrs. Pittman came in with a determination, vision, and energy I had never seen in a principal. She made things possible, set examples for the district as a whole, and brought the staff through to a positive attitude working in the same direction. We made great gains in achievement, formed positive relationships between staff and students, staff and staff, and staff and administration. I have never worked under such a great leader. I hope I get the opportunity to do so again. Yolander Pittman was a lifesaver for me.

Yolander is always making sure she provides the necessary resources for taking test and selecting the appropriate classes toward their career path and college choice. This is an honor. I am also, grateful to Superintendent Christa Warner for taken the time to nominate one of the most well deserved educators who devotes much of her life supporting many students toward their educational goals. Congratulations!!! Principal Yolander Pittman

Mrs. Pittman has a good knowledge of the trauma that the students are dealing with while at school. Mrs. Pittman works in conjunction with all available resources including the school therapist who is contracted through Lutheran Family and Children's Services. Mrs. Pittman was instrumental in assisting the police to bring back a student who was the potential victim of sex trafficking. In this intense moment, Mrs. Pittman kept her composer as she instructed the student on what to do to get to a safe place. Not only does Mrs. Pittman change the lives of so many young people, she In fact may have saved a life!

These are my personal comments. Before Mrs. Pittman came to East High School, we had an interim principal who brought a much needed morale boost for me. When she came, not knowing what to expect, she continued that environment. She is easy to talk to, she is easy to work for and she is a very down to earth and personable person. Mrs. Pittman can be tough but it's with purpose. She works puts forth the effort to make things more pleasant for everyone. She does everything she can to help our students prepare for graduation and after graduation. She has been and is a LifeChanger for a lot of people at East High and beyond these walls.

Mrs. Pittman is a phenomenal principal here at Hazelwood East High School. She demonstrates what a strong leader is all about. She cares not only about her student body but goes above and beyond for her staff as well. Her passion for wanting every student here at East to have a career path and the skills needed to succeed once they leave high school is outstanding. She understands that college is not for everyone, so she wants student here to have the skills to enter the work force, learn a trade, or be college ready. Through her hard work and determination, she has influenced me to want to become a principal and make the same impact that she has on our future students. Way to go Mrs. Pittman.

Mrs. Pittman challenges her students and staff to rise to the best version of themselves. She does not quit and refuses to give up on you even when you have given up on yourself. Mrs. Pittman is a pillar here at Hazelwood Schools. We appreciate her so much. Personally, through Mrs. Pittman's support I have earned two promotions within a 6 month time frame. Mrs. Pittman is definitely a LifeChanger. She was my high school chemistry teacher. I walked into her classroom at the beginning of the year with a distinct hatred for chemistry. I walked out at the end of the year with chemistry as my career path. I am currently the Director of Quality and co-owner of a local analytical laboratory. She is the reason I am where I am today. I will be forever grateful to her for her guidance, persistence and counseling.

She was my high school chemistry teacher. She was no nonsense then and it seems she has maintained that attitude and it's benefited her and the many other lives she's touched. Some people say she didn't like them, but it's not a teacher's job to be your bestie, she's supposed to educate you. She ignited a love for chemistry and math in me that encouraged me to go further in my studies. I have taught and tutored math and chemistry to college students at STLCC-Forest Park in the past, so through her gift all those years ago even more lives were touched by her indirectly. Her current achievements only further support my feelings in high school that she knows her stuff and she loves to teach. Please do consider her for this award because I truly feel she deserves it!!
