Kerry Foote was nominated by her colleague, Lindsay Frevert.

Ms. Foote has been a LifeChanger every year that she has been an educator. Her passion and love for her students and colleagues is evident and contagious. Everyone wants to be better educators because of the drive and effort she brings each and every day.

Ms. Foote is an innovative leader because she finds new ways of teaching, and is constantly creating a classroom environment that is welcoming to every student.

"When you walk into Kerry’s room, you feel such a positive energy," Frevert said. "Her students have the opportunity to have a variety of ways to sit and learn. There are pillows, laundry baskets, desk pedals, saucer seats, etc. for students to utilize while they work."

Flexible seating is a big part of Ms. Foote's classroom, and students determine how they work best and decide how they will sit or even stand. This allows students to have their own learning independence.

Ms. Foote has students learning in several different ways. They are on computers, in small groups, writing in sand, using QR codes, or videoing themselves on iPads practicing fluency. During different holidays, students are seen using Frankenstein fingers while reading, or special holiday glasses while editing. Students have also dressed up in a doctor’s outfit when dissecting words. Her creativity is truly incredible, and the students love it. This past year, Ms. Foote had a special event in her room when she opened up her library. The students were so excited to be able to go book shopping, and the principal, school librarian, and even school mascot came. This little event was very special to her students. Students have a variety of different needs when they enter Ms. Foote's room, and she does all that she can to ensure their needs are met.

Ms. Foote is not only a leader in the classroom, but within the district as well. She is a part of many committees in her school district. She has helped run the Winter Literacy Night, as well as the Read Across America Event. These events have run flawlessly because Ms. Foote has put the time in beforehand to set everything up. Whenever she runs an event, it is run perfectly because of her commitment. Ms. Foote is also on the SunFISH Committee, which does various activities for the staff. She is always willing to assist with making cupcakes or bringing in treats for the staff. She is of great assistance during the staff Holiday Party, always bringing fun games to the table. Ms. Foote has also shared her expertise by presenting various Professional Development workshops for the teachers of our district.

Ms. Foote is always willing to do whatever needs to be done. If there are flyers that need to be typed up, she is willing to do it. If stamina charts or reading logs need to be done, she is there to do them. The curriculum has been revised, and Ms. Foote has been assisting where she can. She has provided activities and centers to assist teachers with the implementation of the curriculum.Ms. Foote is phenomenal with making center activities, and is always willing to make centers for any grade that asks. Whatever she makes, she shares. She is currently on maternity leave, but is still sending emails with various activities for every grade to use.  Her own team is constantly receiving emails of something that she put together.

Ms. Foote is a natural teacher. She is a role model, not only to her students, but the staff as well. Ms. Foote is always trying to find ways to remind her students and her colleagues how awesome they are. She always has Halloween costumes for students just in case they may not have one. One way that she has shown her commitment to her students was with what she did a few years ago, when one of her students was diagnosed with ALD. She was the one who met with the parents to voice the concerns she saw within the classroom. Because of her communication with the parents, they were able to find out what was wrong. Her student was sent to Minnesota for a bone marrow transplant. She and Frevert knew exactly what they needed to do—visit him there. It was the greatest experience, not only for her student, but for his parents as well. After Ms. Foote's student came back, they also tutored him at home and have become permanent members of their family. Ms. Foote continues to stay in contact with her students after they have left her room. She wants them to know that she is always there to support them.

"There is no one that is more deserving of this award," Frevert said. "I am lucky to not only have Kerry as a colleague but as a friend as well. This is truly an award made for Kerry."

Kerry just loves her kids so much. When my granddaughter, Emily, was coming to her school, Kerry did many thoughtful things to make Emily feel comfortable with her transition. Knowing that there was a caring, professional nearby made the move smooth for all of us. Thanks, Kerry.

Kerry Foote is so deserving of this award. She is always creating new and innovative ways to help her students learn and she always shares! After spending countless hours creating new centers for her classroom, Kerry enthusiastically sends an email to the staff explaining and sharing new and creatives way to teach students. It is not unusual to get several emails throughout the week from Kerry sharing resources that will motivate students. Having worked alongside Kerry during our before school Gifted and Talented program, I got so much motivation and energy from her. She is truly a Life Changer. She has not only changed the lives of her students, but also the lives of everyone she comes in contact with. She has the best personality and her energy and passion is contagious. She is the kind of person that you get motivation from just because you are around her!

Kerry has been such a role model to me since the first day I started teaching, 5 years ago. She was so welcoming and willing to help me come up with ideas for my students from the day I met her. Her flexible classroom seating inspired me to try it in my own classroom and my students love it! She is constantly sharing center ideas with my kindergarten team and she doesn't even teach kindergarten. Her creativity and passion is something I continue to strive for and I feel lucky to work alongside her.

Kerry has more energy than anyone I know. Not only does she work to better her own students but she is there for any student or staff member to better themselves. There have been many times when I have received and email on a Saturday or Sunday pertaining to materials, or lessons that I could use to work with my students. Since I am a special services professional, It touches me to see how much she is motivated and willing to share information and lookout for her colleges no matter what their specialty.

In reading the award description, I can wholeheartedly say that Kerry fully embodies the ideals of the Life Changer of the Year Award! Kerry gets to know each and every student individually, works with their abilities and encourages them to achieve all that they possibly can. Few parents can say this, but I can honestly say that Kerry has not only changed, but SAVED my son's life! When Kerry had my son 5 years ago in her 3rd grade class, she noticed that he had some inconsistencies in focus and behavior which eventually led to him being diagnosed with advanced stages of a metabolic disease called adrenoleukodystrophy; a disease in his brain which required two bone marrow transplants to save his life. Looking back, the symptoms were present for several years prior, but the symptoms often present themselves similar to typical learning disabilities like ADHD and other focus-related behaviors. However, Kerry knew my son well enough to notice that these problems were more than a learning disability or unruly behavior. Something was very wrong. It was her observations and actions that let to his diagnosis, and had it not been for her pursuing it farther and working along with us to determine the cause, my son would not be alive today. Since that time frame, Kerry has continued to go above and beyond with my son and support his accomplishments in so many ways. While undergoing his transplants, she came all of the way from New Jersey out to visit him in the hospital in Minnesota. She brought such sunshine to our entire family during a very difficult time, and while she continues to remain very close to us, she brings him cheer as he works through depression and makes him feel special as he has learned to adapt to his many disabilities that have resulted from his illness. Kerry's contagious enthusiasm and positive energy impacts everyone with whom she comes in contact. Whether within the classroom or out among everyday life, she is the type of teacher that the world could use many more of!

Barbara Posted over a year ago

As an educator for 50 years with experience primarily in grades 1-3, I can tell you that Kerry Foote is a gifted teacher. What impresses me the most is the level of creativity that she pours into her classroom to meet the diverse learning needs of students just starting out. That creativity requires an immense amount of work, because of her desire to accommodate as best as possible each student. She blends her imaginative approach to teaching with a firm grasp of establishing good learning habits and classroom behavior, which I have found to be essential for a child's success. In addition. Kerry is recognized by her peers as a problem solver, an innovator, and a source of support. Last year she was recognized as Teacher of the Year, as well as one of the Teachers who make magic by a local radio station. VDV School is blessed to have Kerry Foote on staff as a superb teacher, great role model for new and veteran teachers, and a young woman who exudes kindness and commitment to all in whom she comes in contact.

I had the honor of working with Kerry Foote when she joined the Third Grade team. From the very start, Kerry has demonstrated she is truly a Master Teacher. During her time as a third grade teacher, Kerry also served as an NJASK tutor, and played a pivotal role in developing a curriculum for a piloted after-school homework club. Kerry is extremely knowledgeable of the curriculum and expectations at each grade level. And as mentioned by so many others, she motivates her colleagues to stay creative and to keep learning fun! Aside from being a tremendous support to her colleagues and school community, her number one priority has always been her students. She encourages them, supports them and advocates for them. Kerry Foote is very deserving of the Life Changer of the Year Award!

To see Kerry as a teacher is to see someone so completely in their element - the role they were meant to play in life that then impacts the lives of all of those around her. She looks at her students as an extension of her family - helping them in their education but also in their understanding of life [how to show empathy, kindness]. She goes above and beyond in everything she does - buying Halloween costumes for kids who can't afford, organizing support for her fellow teachers, working the extra hours needed to perfect her lessons. The good she has done so far in her career will only be surpassed in the years ahead.

What impressed me the most about Kerry Foote was when her ALD student was hospitalized in Minnesota, she and her colleague flew out to visit him and his family. They produced a music montage on the young boy's journey, which the hospital shared with others. Her creativity and instinctive ability to reach children are evidence of her gift as a teacher. Every student whom she has touched in the classroom, the lunchroon, the bus line, summer school, gifted and talented student program, before school tutoring is better, because of Mrs. Foote.

What helps to separate Kerry Foote from others is her love for what she does and for those for whom she does it. First and foremost are her children and their needs---from helping them master a skill to even making sure they have warm clothes to wear in the winter.

Kerry is the type of teacher I would want for my two sons. Her intelligence, high expectations of success, creativity, and passion for teaching will make a positive difference in the lives of her students. As a mother, there is nothing else I could wish for in a teacher.

Ms. Frevert could not have described Kerry in a better way! This award is definitely made for her. I am also lucky enough to teach beside her on the first grade team. The amount of thoughtfulness Kerry displays toward her students and fellow colleagues definitely makes a difference in all our lives everyday. She is constantly planning fun innovative lessons as well as creating resources to share with others. I am so lucky to work along side her!
