Rob Flieger was nominated by a parent of a student, Kristina Curnutt.
"Rob lives and works in the Ferguson-Florissant School District community," said Curnutt. "For over 20 years, during his Thanksgiving Break, Rob has taken days of his free time and set up a cultural tour of the winter/holiday season within the school. The tour includes hundreds of figurines from around the world, representing multiple cultures and world traditions surrounding the winter holidays and festivities. The tour also includes giant train tables with locomotives circling and no less than 15 tables filled with figurines and toys that provide history to how various cultures celebrate holidays and winter festivities - with small placards sharing information about each culture."
"Rob is more than a custodian in our school," said Curnutt. "He bonds with the scholars, knows their names, encourages the staff by bringing in special snacks for them, and provides staff get-togethers at his home. Within the last few years, Rob has put in more work than usual with extra COVID precautions and many storms coming through the area. On the weekends, if you drive by the school, you will often see him picking up fallen limbs, clearing brush, and much more due to storms. However, a special moment was when Rob went out of his way to make a scholar a custodian shirt of his own, with his own name on it. This scholar could often be found assisting Rob with various custodial duties, as he enjoyed the work, and it gave him a brain break from the classroom when needed. Rob presented it to the student, who was thrilled to be part of the Commons Lane team."
Mr Rob is absolutely greatest. He is an awesome person a d great at his position. He is always extremely kind and welcoming. He is helpful in all places and all spaces. He helps keep the moral higher when he bring sin treats for all to enjoy. He ensures that needs are met as best as possible. You Don't have to worry about things not being done during his shift. He moves upon request as swiftly as needed. The kiddos love and respect Mr. Rob. They have the mutual love for one another. His Christmas display brought happiness to the building and filled the halls with joy. His presence is most graciously appreciated. Thank you so much Mr. Rob ! We love love love you !!
I remember Mr. Rob from when I was a child attending Commons Lane as a student and remembered how excited I was during the holiday seasons because he had the best display for students ! I was fortunate enough to work at Commons Lane and have gotten to know all of the hard work he continues to do after years have passed ! It warms my heart to know he still continues this tradition in making scholars , staff members, and teachers welcomed and supported !
This man has a heart of gold. For many years he outdid himself with the holiday decorations he put up for the kids - spending hours and hours of time and his own money to bring a little holiday cheer to each and every one. To say he goes "over and beyond the call of duty" would be an understatement in Rob's case. He was always accessible to staff as well. His humor often picked me up during challenging days. This beloved man deserves every accolade that you could send his way. He has literally touched thousands of lives and will always occupy a special place in the hearts and minds of those lucky enough to know him and to have worked with him. :)
Rob goes out of his way to make Common Lane a place the kids and teacher enjoy being at. He enjoys being around the kids.
Mr. Rob was the first to welcome me to Commons Lane Elementary when I started there. He was a source of strength and support when I needed it. His attention to keeping the morale of both staff and students up is amazing!
Mr. Rob is the best! I had the pleasure of working with him for many years before my retirement. He would do anything to support the teachers at Commons Lane, from simple tasks to special requests not in his job description to make our school and classrooms a better place. One of my favorite Mr. Rob memories was the way he decorated the building for Christmas every year. He used his Thanksgiving break to fill the school with holiday decorations that the kids would be amazed at upon their return to school. Back in the day when he also decorated his own house, he invited every classroom to come tour it for a field trip culminating with a picture with Santa and a candy cane.
Mr. Rob is just the most generous, kind, hardworking person and Commons Lane is lucky to have him for all these years!
Mr. Rob is a hero at Commons Lane. He makes everyone at school feel special. Not only does he take care of the school and keep it clean, he takes care of the staff and students too. He helps teachers move furniture, gives gifts, scrapes ice off of our cars in winter and chases angry geese off the playground. On his own time, he makes the school beautiful by planting flowers and decorating for holidays. He makes Commons Lane a happy place for students, staff, and parents.
I worked at Commons Lane for 16 years. Mr. Rob went above and beyond to make sure the staff and students were taken care of. My favorite time of the year was Christmas. The school looked like Winter’s Wonderland! Mr. Rob took his time and attention on his weekend off to transform the school. Working there was like family, with Mr. Rob always willing to lend a helping hand. He is a humble and selfless human being who is much deserving of this award.
Mr. Rob has been at Commons Lane since I was a student here. He always goes above and beyond to make sure the school is clean and decorated, and that students and staff all feel welcome!
Mr. Rob is the sweetest most selfless man I have ever met. He takes such pride in Commons Lane and keeping our building a beautiful, safe and clean place to learn. The kids simply adore him. He is always taking care of the staff by surprising us with donuts, and having hot coffee every morning. I love Mr. Rob like family and I am beyond blessed to have worked a long side him. Anything I need, he is there, any time I have a problem, he fixes it. I don’t know what I’d do without him. He is like a second father to me!
Mr. Rob always goes above and beyond to make staff feel special and appreciated. He is always friendly and helpful. Mr. Rob makes sure we are always supplied with coffee and brings in donuts and treats often! At times, he spends weekends at school cleaning or decorating so that Commons Lane looks festive and welcoming! Mr. Rob is a vital part of our Commons Lane family and am happy to have the opportunity to work with him.
I am the PE teacher at Commons Lane. So for me, I am always needing Rob's assistance to get the gym floors ready for my classes after lunch. Thanks to Rob the gym is always ready for my classes. It shows that he takes great pride in what he does and he is always doing it with a smile and a positive attitude. Rob is always going above and beyond the call of duty. He is always available when we need him and he is usually on top of any problems immediately. He is a true pillar to the structure and functioning of our school.
Mr. Rob is currently the longest tenured employee at Commons Lane. He takes pride in his work and treats Commons Lane like it is personal house. He spends countless hours at school laying mulch, planting flowers, decorating for various holidays all on his own time. Mr. Rob has worked an extreme amount of overtime when we didn't have an evening custodian for the front half of the building to make sure that the building was ready for students and staff the next day. Mr. Rob has taken students under his wing to help him out and to make them feel special. He even got one student his very own custodian shirt to wear. As students and staff come and go you can guarantee when they ask about Commons Lane they will always ask how Mr. Rob is doing.
