Ekuwah Moses was nominated by a colleague, Ryan DeVries.

"Ekuwah Moses is an award-winning educator, published author-illustrator of two nonfiction picture books, and an international keynote speaker. Her debut children's book, My Name is an Address, became an Amazon #1 new release and is featured by the School Library Journal. Ekuwah is a 6-day rotation specialist who teaches K-5th grade Engineering to approximately 750 students. Ekuwah is the 2023 Educator of the Year at D.L. Dusty Dickens Elementary School and received the 2022-2023 City of North Las Vegas Mayor's Innovative Teaching Award. She is a member of the school's STEM leadership team and was instrumental in helping the school achieve the Nevada Governor Designated STEM school status," said DeVries.

"During her tenure as an Engineering teacher at D.L. Dusty Dickens Elementary School, Ms. Moses has established herself as a natural leader. As an active member of her school's STEM leadership team, she has increased schoolwide ownership of STEM initiatives by modeling how to make connections across content areas. Ms. Moses has hosted a series of book studies focusing on integrating STEM across the curriculum to create deeper cohesion in STEM education at her school. As such, staff frequently request time to observe her instruction to gain insight into how she facilitates design challenges, strategies for reflective writing, vocabulary and diagramming strategies, and classroom management tips. She assisted the school administration in placing a large Title I order of STEM materials for the next school year to help teachers save money and provide accessibility to quality STEM education for students who may be economically disadvantaged," said DeVries.

"Ms. Moses always states that family engagement is the linchpin to student achievement. As her school's designated family representative, she holds free family learning workshops beyond school hours and presents at districtwide "Super Saturday" events. Ms. Moses has also shown parents how to encourage their students to build perseverance through problem-solving. She has presented at parent meetings and provided them with ideas for building critical thinking skills at home," said DeVries.

"Ms. Moses created the 'Engineering Wall of Fame,' a display posted outside of her classroom in a high-traffic hallway. During the design process, she circulates the classroom and takes photographs of students working collaboratively/independently, testing or improving a prototype, and when they are celebrating success. The photos hang alongside grade-level exemplary written reflections of the corresponding engineering design challenge. The students' reflections state what went well, what was a challenge, and what they would do differently next time. The action shots, written reflection, and public display are part of a transformative experience in which students learn something about themselves. The display enables students to see themselves, gives a sense of purpose, and reinforces high expectations schoolwide," said DeVries."

"Ms. Moses is a published author-illustrator of a nonfiction picture book titled 'My Name is an Address.' It uses alphabet letters to explain her life experiences, the meaning of her name, how it was chosen, and how her first and last name trace their origin back to a specific house in Cape Coast, Ghana. She has received testimonials from CCSD teachers who have used her book with their students, staff members, and family nights. Students frequently approach her with questions about being an author, and they share personal stories of how they relate to her book," said DeVries.

"Students in her class often declare in their written reflections that they want to be an Engineer when they grow up. Between the exposure to a diverse mix of engineers, her read-aloud, the ample amount of student-led design time based on their interests, the pride of independently or collaboratively completing a complex prototype, the 'Engineering Wall of Fame,' and the joy of taking home something they made, it's clear that her class is transformative and will lead students to create solutions to change the present and future world. Ms. Moses has and continues to have a profound impact on her students, which makes her deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award," said DeVries.

Congratulations Ekuwah. Although we've never met in person, I consider you more than a colleague in the field of parent/caregiver engagement. I think of you as a friend. I remember you saying to me, in one of our conversations, "My name is an address". It went straight to my heart because in five words it expressed all that I felt about my paternal and maternal background and who I am. As well, it helped me find another route to explaining the importance of school and home collaboration. Then it became the title of your first wonderful book! Having you as a guest twice on my podcast (once with your father) was a thrill and offered my listeners valuable insights into your work and writing. I love seeing your twitter posts and the amazing work you are doing with your students. You are SO deserving of this nomination for Lifechanger because that is what you are.

I had the honor of working alongside Ekuwah for many years. I first met Ekuwah through our family and community engagement work in the Clark County School District. Her innovative ideas on ways to engage parents and families in their children's education and her ability to celebrate and uplift the knowledge all families possess were transformative in how our district looked at parent involvement and family engagement. Everything she did and continues to do comes from a place of love and passion, and she continues to have an impact on our entire community. A few years ago I became the leader of a human services non-profit organization operating in the educational space. Being an incredible author, Ekuwah graciously spent the day with our entire staff of site-based student support coordinators to share her books and rich experiences. I am proud to call her a colleague and friend, and of course, a LifeChanger!

Ekuwah has made an impact on my life in several ways. Her books have taught me an incredible amount about herself and her family’s culture. They are beautifully written and illustrated. Through Facebook videos, I have been able to watch her create lessons, or rather let her students create in ways that address STEM goals and objectives. It is clear from the children's’ responses that they engaged problem-solving thinking skills in order to make something, test it and adjust their project to make it work. The reflections afterwards demonstrate deep thinking. Someday I wish to meet her in person for she has truly inspired me as a teacher.
