Sergio Nuno was nominated by his superintendent, Blondean Davis.
"Sergio Nuno is the heart of Matteson School District 162 and Southland College Prep Charter High School. From our youngest scholars at our pre-school to the seniors at our high school and our alumni across the country, Sergio, as the students and staff affectionately call him, is loved," said Davis.
"When I hired Sergio as a custodian in our school district twelve years ago, I had no idea what a profound impact he would have on our school community," said Davis. "As Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. Everyone has the power for greatness because greatness is determined by service. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.'"
"I can say without fear of contradiction that Sergio is a great man. His service, animated by his love and grace, makes him great," said Davis.
"Sergio is an example of excellence, and his work ethic is exemplary. He is the first in our building, arriving shortly after 5 in the morning because he says he wants 'everything ready.' He serves our students and staff daily, ensuring they have a clean and safe environment to learn and work. He often leaves long after his shift is over to make sure that everything is done. Sergio said he 'will drop whatever he is doing to help' a student or staff member in need," said Davis.
"He makes everyone feel like a queen or king," said music teacher Elizabeth Norman Sojourner."
"Sergio sets the atmosphere of the school. Our students seek him not only to find the innumerable lost items that children and teens are prone to misplace during a school day but also for an encouraging word. His kindness is contagious. He has impacted our students' lives by encouraging them and letting them know they are seen and loved," said Davis.
Southland Class of 2019 graduate Olivia Brown is a recent graduate of the University of Missouri who works as a crisis counselor and is currently applying for medical school. She described Mr. Nuno and his impact on her life this way:
"Sergio radiates such positive and happy vibes that there was never a day where he didn't light up my day. No matter the request, Sergio was sure to help as much as he could without even thinking twice. He goes above and beyond for anyone who is in need or has a concern. His warm personality always turned my bad days into good days. Anytime I would tell Sergio I was having a long day, he would always say, "You keep going, girl, you got this," and those words will forever stick with me. To know Sergio is to love him, and his thoughtfulness of others will never go unnoticed," said Brown.
"Sergio migrated from Mexico when he was 18 to help his parents and ten siblings. He has a son and grandson who live out of state, but according to him, District 162 and Southland are also his family. He is a treasured member of the 162 and Southland family. From the four-year-olds who hug him and say 'We love you, Mr. Sergio,' to the high school seniors who say his name with excitement and give him a fist bump, Sergio Nuno is loved, respected, and is daily having a positive impact on lives. He is a LifeChanger," said Davis.
Sergio is one of the most hard-working and genuine people at District 162, always going above and beyond for students and staff even when he didn't have to. Truly one of the kindest people I've known.
My name is Oluwaseye (Seye) Ayamolowo and after reading this article, the impart Sergio Nuno has on others isn’t surprising at all. From my freshman year of high school to my senior year of college, Sergio has always been a beacon of light that will instantly bring joy to those around him. I remember greeting Sergio early mornings when we had to wake up for track and cross-country meets, to then saying bye to him after returning to school that night. I remember the countless quotes, stories, and words of encouragement gifted to me to remind me to be my best self. I remember the extra blazer he got for me after mine had gotten torn up and ripped. The impact Sergio had even eventually influenced me to aid him whenever I could to get some of the load off his never-ending schedule. Sergio embodied unconditional love and support and our friendship and his friendship with others is a testament to that. I know that no matter who you are, even if you don’t remember what Sergio said to you, you will definitely remember the impact and positive aura radiating from his kind heart.
Every school should have a Sergio Nuno. His work ethic, his attitude, his humor, and his kindness to our students and staff is evident on a daily basis. He greets everyone with a smile and has a very engaging personality. He has a wonderful relationship with our students and demonstrates every day the importance of being respectful and kind to others. He models our school district's motto, "Excellence is the Expectation" in everything you do for yourself and others. He is the best!!
I have known Sergio as a student and as a fellow worker when I returned to the school as an intern when I returned to work at my high school after I graduated. During both of my experiences knowing Sergio he has always been there to offer a helpful hand or directions towards wherever you needed to go in the school. All the students who have graduated from Southland have seen firsthand how hard he has worked and know how much he deserves this reward. We appreciate you.
Sergio has been a welcoming face of District 162 for years. He is always ready to step in and help wherever help is needed. He is kind and greets everyone with a warm "Hello." Sergio makes sure we are setup and prepared for all of our meetings and workshops and does it with a smile. His enthusiasm is contagious and you can't help but to feel a little brighter when he is around.
He is truly one of the kindest people I know. I am so proud of him and how far he has come.

Sergio is truly a life changer because he cares. He goes above and beyond his job description everyday, watching over our students in the halls and making sure nothing seems out of place. Sergio puts students first.
It has been 4 years since I graduated from Southland and Sergio is someone that sticks with me to this day. I remember sitting in the hallway crying and upset, Sergio found me and gave me the most encouraging pep talk. He brings a smile to the face of every person he sees. He deserves all the honor and recognition!
I am so thankful for all the times Sergio has helped me. Whether it’s him telling me to have a good day or going the extra mile to help me recover lost belongings, Sergio never hesitates to drop what he is doing to help others. Sergio has always supported the PTSO over the years! He made sure we had all the equipment needed to support the children and would go above and beyond to make us comfortable.

On my first day at Southland, Sergio insisted on helping me settle into my new space. He has been a pleasure to work with ever since. Sergio is one of the most selfless, kind, and positive people I know. He can always be counted on to lend a hand, offer advice, and share a good joke.
Sergio has been such a blessing and a benefactor towards me and district 162. I can't count the times he has came in clutch when I need a quick snack before practice or a game when my sugar runs low. Not only that but he does this all without a complaint and a smile on his face. If the world had more people like Sergio, the world would be a better place.

I support Sergio without reservation. I have worked with Sergio for 11 years as an administrator. He is a tireless worker who always has students and staff as his priority. There has never been an individual who is as sincere and positive. I have been an administrator for over 50 years and I can say without reservation, he is the best worker and person I have ever encountered. He has made our district better as a result.
Mr. Nuno has always greeted me with a smile. It is refreshing to see someone who enjoys his work and the people with whom he works.
I met Mr. Sergio on the elevator at Southland a few years ago. Mr. Sergio quickly engaged me in conversation helping me feel at ease. I was immediately impressed by Mr. Sergio’s friendly smile and gentle voice. He probably doesn’t know how much I appreciated the short friendly conversation which ended with a bit of advice that I still remember today. Mr. Sergio’s work ethic has impressed me as well. I have great respect for people who take pride in their work, regardless of what the job entails. Prior to knowing of his transfer to SD 162, I noticed a difference in the cleanliness of the school Mr. Sergio was transferred to. A few days later I saw Mr. Sergio at the school and realized that the difference was him. People like Mr. Sergio are hard to find and I’m so very glad I’ve had the opportunity to meet him.
Sergio is the hardest working man in all of Southland and District 162. He is always willing to do more for you. And in my 5 years here, I've never seen Sergio in a foul mood.

I never talked to him much, but when I did he was one of the kindest people I'd ever known.
I will never forget when I first started working at Southland, Sergio said to me "ll write you up.. We both laughed for a few minutes. He has such a great sense of humor. He is also very caring, I was walking funny one day as my foot was hurting and he of course asked if I was ok and I told him yes. The next day he brought me in a pair of shoe inserts to help with my foot pain. He was always checking with us ladies in the cafeteria to make sure we were ok and having a good day. He definatley deserves being nominated for the Life Changer Award. Here's to you Sergio!!!
Sergio Nuno is a great man who is greatly loved. He is the heart of Matteson School District 162 and Southland College Prep. Nuno has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our school community. I have had the pleasure of knowing him as a parent and now as a colleague and friend. Both of my children graduated from Matteson School District 162 and Southland and they both appreciated Nuno. I knew how impactful and loved he was when my son, when he was in high school, said the students wanted to plan an appreciation for Sergio. He always helped my son find his lost items and always showed concerned. After my son graduated, Nuno always asked about how he was doing. When I go to the school, I see the students light up when they see him and call his name and greet him with a smile. When he recently started working at the preschool most days instead of the high school, the students gave him a surprise appreciation and many tears were shed because the students would not see his smiling presence every day.
He greets me with a smile and brings a smile to my face every time I see him. He brings joy to our buildings and students. You don't have to have a big title to be a great leader. Sergio Nuno is a leader who leads with love by his example of how he treats others and serves. My late father, a preacher and pastor, often would say the greatest title that God respects is servant. Sergio Nuno is a servant leader whose hard work, excellence and impact make him well deserving of the title Life Changer.
Sergio is the best. Both of my children love him. He goes over an beyond to support the students and staff, from helping record student videos and simple things, like helping find a phone. He has always been a big help throughout the years. He always brings happiness and joy to the school with his positive and caring attitude.
I am blessed to work with someone as caring as Sergio. He is indeed a life changer in the lives of the staff and the preschool students at Richton Square School. He is one of the highlights of their day, greeting the little ones with a smile or a fist bump and a high five. Staff are greeted with the same warm smile and a have a good day. He makes sure that he will check on us during the day just like family to make sure everything is well. He is our lifechanger!

Any time we invite media to Southland to cover a special event, a concert, or a press conference heralding our student's accomplishments, Sergio Nuno is on deck, ready to make sure that the scene and setting are perfect, clean and presentable.
On several occasions, we've made last minute adjustments to the setting of an event just before media arrived, but no matter, Sergio could be depended upon to rise to the occasion and make all things right and do it with his trademark smile!

Sergio is so many things to the Southland and Matteson 162 families that it’s hard to capture it all! He is a worker bee, a problem solver, a cheerleader to anyone needing it, a mood lifter, a plant saver, a search-and-find wizard, a Spanish teacher, a good listener and a friend to all. Sergio....He is a man that treats everyone with respect and has a smile to match. I am the secretary at Richton Square and I call on Sergio numerous times during the day. Whatever I ask him to do, get what we need or clean up after a child gets sick he gets it done and does not complain. He has a sense of humor that makes you laugh even if you are having a busy day. Sergio always says "Thank You" and "Good Morning or Good Night" to everyone. He is a man that cares how our school looks inside and outside. Sergio is great to work with. Sergio became my brother after arriving to Southland 6:30 am daily. We had a few minutes to encourage each other with kind words everyday and then went to work on preparing the students for the day. Sergio cares for everyone and he always tell people to "remember God, our creator and to be kind to everyone". He always give people words to live by. Sergio is often the first person I see when I enter the building and he ALWAYS provides an upbeat greeting and usually shares a positive thought that brightens the rest of my day. I have gotten to know Sergio over the years working in District 162 and being involved in events held at the District Office. Sergio always approaches the people he comes in contact with, with the biggest and friendliest smile ever. I have on occasions seen Sergio out in about in different communities, he always makes time to speak and engage in conversation with me on how I'm doing personally and how are things going with me at work. Sergio is a beautiful human being both inside and out. Such a pleasure to be around.
Sergio Nuno is truly the heart of the building, wherever he works. From his friendly "Hellooo my friend!" first thing in the morning to his "You have a good one!" on your way out the door, Sergio always puts the welfare of others first. There was never a time that he was asked for help in which he did not go above and beyond. And it doesn't matter if you are the youngest student or the oldest staff member - Sergio treats everyone he meets with care and respect. He carries the love of God in his heart, and he will be the first one to tell you how blessed he is. I truly believe it is those he meets on a daily basis that are blessed by his kindness and selfless attitude.

I am elated that I have an opportunity to speak highly of a custodian that I've known since 2010 when we started our first public charter school in the south suburbs of Chicago. As a school administrator for over 15 years during my 30 year career, I've always made sure that the custodians and the food service workers were made to feel part of the school family. When we started Southland College Prep Charter High School, Sergio was hired as our first custodian and has remained with us as part of our family. I am so proud of being able to honor a person who has never complained about performing tasks or ensuring our students have a clean environment to learn in. Sergio has added so much value to make this a friendly and caring environment by greeting each and every student he sees, attending to their needs when they need something, helping them find lost items when they misplace something, and so much more. He exemplifies "family" and we are grateful for his presence. Sergio is more than a Custodian, he is a Caretaker.
Hello everyone. I can write a book about this gentleman! But, I’ll keep it short and sweet. Sergio was my mom’s husband from when I was thirteen until she passed away from breast cancer in 2008.. Half of my life I’ve known this man and he took care of myself, my mom and my siblings like a perfect gentleman. The way the he cared for my mother in her last days were so heart warming. It truly showed what she meant to him. We lost contact over the year’s but, when we would cross paths. It’s like we’ve never skipped a beat. If anyone deserves this, it’s definitely Tony to but Sergio to the Southland Family.
It comes with great pleasure to support the nomination of a great man, Serigo Nuno. Before I had the pleasure of meeting Sergio, I knew of him. One of my daughters graduated, and the other currently attends Southland College Prep, where he worked for many of the years that he has been employed with the Matteson School District 162 and Southland family. Both spoke highly of him as someone who affirmed them on those challenging days that we all have.
Since his recent move to Richton, I have had the privilege of working with Sergio daily, and I can attest to his hard work and kind and supportive spirit that continues to make a meaningful difference. Each morning, as I enter the building, I can expect a cheerful, GOOD MORNING! IT'S GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY! On some days, he adds a joke that gives me a good laugh as I walk to my office.
Above all things, it is the spirit of a man that leaves the most significant impact on others. Sergio is so deserving of this wonderful recognition.
Coming from Mexico we did not have much family around but I was lucky enough to have my uncle Sergio around. Always there to give advice and always making us laugh.

When arriving at the Square each day it is a pleasure and a joy to hear Sergio greeting me. I know very little Spanish but I try anyway and Hola is my mantra to Sergio. He returns the greeting in Spanish so I can practice. His smile is infectious so one cannot help return it. He will stroll through the building picking up what should not be in the halls, conversing with our little ones and working happily with his colleagues. He ends the day the same way he started, with an infectious smile, happy for all of us to have an amazing rest of the day. Gracias Sergio.

In my 4 years as a student at Southland College Prep, i have known Sergio to be an amazingly kind spirit in and out! There was not one instance where negativity was portrayed by this man. He is more than the smiling face that greeted us students every day before we started class. When I would be dealing with stuff and my mind was occupied outside of school, when I returned to school, Sergio never failed to greet me with a huge “HELLO MY FRIEND….HOW ARE YOU TODAY!” And it made me forget about the negativity. Sergio is often the first person I am in contact with as I enter school early for bus monitor duty. He always greets me with a smile and a kind or inspirational word. He knows how to lift your spirit with just a few encouraging words. It is a great way to start the day! His work ethic is top notch and no task is too big or too small. Sergio goes out of his way to be sure the school and the playground are clean and ready for the children to learn and enjoy. Even going as far as clearing the leaves so they will be safe while running and galavanting on the black top. The preschoolers adore him and are always excited to give him a fist pump or a high five. His presence illuminates the building and we are lucky to have him!
When Mr. Sergio came to work at Richton Square, he fit right in, not as a stranger like family. Always a good morning or kind word for each and every staff member and student in the building. He checks on you daily to make sure everything is okay and clean and will assist whenever possible throughout the building. He is a true gem.

Sergio is a delight to have in our school. He is pleasant and hardworking. When I first saw Sergio, he was picking weeds from the flower beds that line the perimeter of our playground. Generally he is the first one I speak to in the morning and I have the opportunity to hear him greet many others throughout the day with a "Hello", "How are you?", "You have a good one!" Sergio has a gentle kindness that spreads to all he encounters. His sensitivity reaches from our littlest of learners through to our seasoned professionals. When Sergio identifies an issue, he immediately seeks a solution. Many times this requires him to set aside his own needs to care for those around him. Sergio will tell you that serving others brings him great joy, I will tell you he is a joy to watch and work along side!!
Sergio goes above and beyond to make sure the kids of southland feel loved and cared about…. He is known for teaching kids spanish in the hallways!

Serigo brung me my very own chair to sit at, during master class. He also would give small snacks, and search the building for your items. He always told me have a good day, and spoke to me. Wonderful person!
Sergio has been my janitor since my freshman year of highschool! He is always so positive and he is such a bright soul! He treats every student so kindly!
I lost my purse and my jacket and Sergio went out of his way to help me find both, without complaint, he’s the best!
Mr. Sergio deserves ALL the recognition as my twins (2022 Dist 162 graduates) always spoke so highly of him and always took note and appreciated the way he took care of their learning environment. Celebrate him!!!!

I am a current senior at Southland College Prep and it brought sadness to my heart discovering that Sergio would be leaving the Southland family. I began speaking to Sergio my junior year after I had lost something. He walked around the entire school in search of what I had misplaced. Whenever he saw me he'd give me an update and when I found my misplaced item, Sergio made me feel accomplished for finding it and gave me a great laugh. A laugh that will always bring a smile to my face when I hear the name Sergio. From that moment on, every single day at Southland, I spoke to Sergio. I conversed with him on that daily, and he was just a very heartwarming person to be around. Sergio always ALWAYS had encouraging words and inspirations to share and I never heard him complain. When I learned of his departing Southland, he wished ME well before I had a change to give him thanks and praise him on his journey. I am so glad that Sergio is still apart of the Matteson District 162 family as it just feels better knowing that he is right down the street, doing well. Sergio is absolutely a LifeChanger. He brings faith,
smiles, & good energy to the saddest of souls. I know I speak for many when I say that Mr. Sergio Nuno makes us all feel stronger and see clearer; he can make a long day at Southland seem so short, if only you speak to him. Congratulations on your nomination Sergio, you deserve the win, the praise, & every other good thing that comes your way!
Sergio has never failed to help a student in need no matter how long it may take out of his day, he’s always been dedicated to assist and comfort and he’s a really funny guy! LOVE YOU SERGIO!!!
