Music that Describes Dr. Yuvraj

Dr. Yuvraj Verma was nominated by 3 of his students from Chalkville Elementary School during the 2023-24 school year. He moved on to teach 6th Grade Math at Bessemer City Middle School during the 2024-25 school year under a prestigious Alabama State TEAMS (Teacher Excellence and Accountability for Mathematics and Science) contract.

"This year, our teacher's name is Dr. Verma. He's a great and funny teacher; he's nice, caring, helpful, and funny! He helps us when people are mad or bad, and he doesn't drag it along when some people do bad stuff. Dr. Verma is always smiling and excited. He wears a suit and tie daily; some of us wear ties on Tie Day Tuesdays like him. Dr. Verma even helps tie them for us. When we behaved well and got 100 on our point card, he got us Dominoe's pizza and let us take Takhis, brownies, bubbles, and more from the prize bin. For Christmas, Dr. Verma got us presents. He plays music when we do work but stops it if people talk, and he lets us sit at his desk if people need help or if we are good. We sing '2 4 6 8 who do we appreciate' in a circle, and everybody's name gets sung in the morning. Sometimes, we play Detective or Four Corners," said the students.

"We got to go on field trips that nobody else got to. We have a little Christmas tree with ornaments; he put the presents under it. Dr. Verma is so funny when you get to know him. He's nice, kind, caring, entertaining, and makes school fun. We sometimes get to dance when Dr. Verma wants to be DJ Verma. He teaches us math. Also, he teaches us reading and science stuff like matter and chemical reactions with milk and vinegar and social studies like the Maya civilization we didn't know, making our brains bigger and smarter," said the students.

Below is a biography submitted with Dr. Verma's nomination:

After graduating with his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Sociology from Iona University in 2017 where he was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta: The International Sociology Honor Society, Dr. Yuvraj Verma began his career as a teacher in New York (and right before that, he was a tutor at the Success Center in New Rochelle, NY from 2015 to 2017). He taught 5th Grade and Kindergarten in Brooklyn, NY from 2017 to 2019 at PS446: Riverdale Avenue Community School and Our World Neighborhood Charter School II, respectively. Thereafter, he began working as a Learning Specialist at Growing Up Green Charter School II in Queens, NY from 2019 to 2021 where he academically supported students in 2nd through 6th grade who needed intervention, accelerated-enrichment, or mandatory special education sessions. He was also a Lead K12 Afterschool Teacher at a homeless shelter (Saratoga Family Residence of Homes for the Homeless, Inc.) from 2019 to 2020, and a Virtual Special Education Instructor at FullBloom (formerly iTutor.com, Inc.) from 2020 to 2022. In 2017 while teaching at PS446: Riverdale Avenue Community School, Dr. Verma was the recipient of the “Back to School: Build Your Classroom Award for Excellence” from the Brooklyn Education Center. In 2019, Dr. Verma received a “Cause for Applause” employee of the month award from the Saratoga Family Residence. In both 2020 and in 2021, FullBloom awarded him with a "Best Practice” Award. In 2021 while teaching at Growing Up Green Charter School II, Dr. Verma received an “Exceptional Contributor” Award from the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, and he had led one of his robotics teams to be named the New York State Champions of the Spring 2021 CoderZ League Robotics Competition and another one of his teams came in 3rd Place.

Dr. Verma completed his Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in Childhood and Special Education with a 3.96 GPA from the Relay Graduate School of Education in 2019, and his Education Specialist (EdS) degree in Education Administration and his Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in Technology and Leadership with 3.94 GPAs both from William Howard Taft University in 2021 and 2022, respectively. He was inducted into Pi Lambda Theta: National Honor Society for Educators in 2019 and Kappa Delta Pi: The International Honor Society in Education in 2022.

In 2022, Dr. Verma started teaching 5th Grade in Alabama. He teaches at Chalkville Elementary School (within the Jefferson County Schools System in Birmingham), but taught at Martha Gaskins Elementary School (within the Birmingham City Schools System) his first year. In September of 2022, Dr. Verma was one of five winners of the Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative from the Southeast Commission (SEC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in collaboration with the College Football Playoff Foundation (CFP). In April of 2023, Dr. Verma earned a scholarship from Dr. Melissa Shields (Assistant State Superintendent) of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) to become a Nationally Board Certied Teacher (NBCT), which he is presently working towards completing in Early Adolescent Mathematics. In June of 2023, Dr. Verma received the Torchbearer Award from the Birmingham City Council at their annual Man Up Breakfast for his impactful mentoring, guidance, and service as a male role model. In September of 2023, he was named Teacher of the Month at Chalkville Elementary School. In October of 2023, he received a Pets in the Classroom grant, which allowed him and his students to adopt a Hermit Crab. Additionally, Dr. Verma successfully guides his students in various extracurricular activities that are beyond the classroom. For example, he coached multiple robotics teams who became national champions within the CoderZ League Robotics Competition in 2022 and 2023. Further, a video he and both of his classes created in 2023 was the Top Winner within the PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center’s "Students with Solutions" Competition. In addition, his students received national victory when a team participated in the Fall 2023 "Plant the Moon, Plant Mars" Competition where they had to create and execute an experiment using simulant extraterrestrial soil and then wrote a lab report with their findings as well as created a video explaining their work.

Nonetheless, he has written, published, and presented his education articles as well as his doctoral research in SmartBrief, ProQuest, eSchool News, and Teach Magazine. When he is not teaching, Dr. Verma enjoys listening to music, trying new food, writing, going on cruises, volunteering at the Children's of Alabama Hospital's emergency department, and serving as a special-advocate of children experiencing abuse, neglect, or who committed delinquent acts and therefore have legal involvement in the Jeerson County (Alabama) Family Court. He is a member of several Junior Boards: Junior Achievement of Alabama, Christopher Kids, WBHM Birmingham NPR News, Heart Gallery Alabama - Adoptable Children, and Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham. Dr. Verma's personal-mission is guided by three quotes: "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care" (Theodore Roosevelt); "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” (Frederick Douglass); and "Choose a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life" (Confucius).

Dr. Verma was the first of BCMS staff to contact me about my child starting the new year at a new school. She was a little anxious about beginning middle school but he welcomed her and helped put her at ease. He is undoubtedly her FAVORITE teacher. She's in his homeroom and math class. He sends updates via text to inform parents of progress and interests. Some people work just for a check. U can tell Dr Verma enjoys his job and is actually concerned about the well being of his students. He is enthusiastic, energetic, and engaging. He deserves to be acknowledged for being the Life Changer that he is.

I like Dr verma as my math teacher he’s the best teacher I have right now in 6 grade he’s funny and respects every body he plays around accept for when he doesn’t play he’s crazy and he calm when we are working he brakes up fights but nobody dares to fight in his classroom they usually fight in reading and outside but all dr verma does is he yells a a a and every one stops moving and talking and sits or goes to class and then after he bring the kids who was fighting to his class and calmly talks to them both and gives them a tissue if they crying even though he texted my dad and called my aunt for being late to class a few times I still think Dr verma should win the $ he spends a lot of money on us for students of the month and shirts with our faces on it and snacks so he can use the money to get us more stuff

Kendra Luna Posted over a year ago

Hello, I'm Kendra and Dr Verma is my 4th period math teacher. I go to Bessemer City Middle School and am in 6th grade. Dr Verma is a fun, smart and a good teacher. He always helps me with my work when I'm stuck, he makes a lot of good stuff such as fun days, personalized shirts, and even bring a therapy dog to school! Because of Dr. Verma I have learned many things that it was hard for me to learn, like math problems. Dr. Verma is a very, VERY fun teacher, he makes up good jokes (I really laugh at them.) he also makes some of us laugh and make our days change, he always makes up something fun and always celebrates everyone's birthday. He knows how to fix conflicts between students, he knows how to teach, and he knows how to have fun while learning. Dr. Verma is the most funniest teacher I ever had, so he deserves that money and award.

Adrienne Pledger Posted over a year ago

Dr.Verma is a cool teacher. I am very happy to have him as a teacher this year. We go on field trips and do pet therapy and other fun activities. He is also a very fun and easy person to talk to sometimes. I think he should win this award because he is a really cool and fun teachers and my peers.

Victoria Jennings Posted over a year ago

Dr. Verma is an excellent teacher I love that he keeps me updated on my son. My son use to struggle with Math but now he loves it. He’s an all around wonderful teacher

Micah Jules Posted over a year ago

Dr. Verma should win the award because he always help's each and every student when they need it and he works well with kids. He is a good teacher because he plans field trips and make things for us like shirts with our faces. He gives us snacks when we earn it in class or if we are doing something smart like going back into our old notes to solve a problem and more thing slike that. Dr. Verma ask the class if we understand it or not and if most of us does not understand he gives us a better understanding in a new way, he would also work out the questions we are working on step-by-step. If we are working on something we did yesterday or another day he has a big piece of paper of what we worked on a day or so after the day it was written so if we don't understand we can look at the big paper we worked on the other day. This is the reasons I think Dr.Verma should win the money

Hi my name is Christopher Bush and I'm A 6th Grader That Goes To Bessemer City Middle School. Dr. Yuvraj Verma is a very fun teacher and very respectful math teacher. And makes middle school more easier like he uses M&M's to do our work and it was fun even he let us eat them after we were done working. And he makes funny jokes and give us snacks if we be on good behavior. But if you get on his bad side he will finish you and its so funny to watch. But if you get on is good side he's very nice and gives Away snacks and texts are parents. and He truly has the passion to teach math, He lets us go to his classroom 5thpd or 6thpd sometimes and if we get student of the month we get a Domino's Pizza gift card or a Roblox gift card or Takis. He is teaching us Exponential Form now. And he is a very popular teacher and call us funny nicknames and he gives us a packet every single week or month for the unit that we better not lose. Brooklyn Crawford Posted over a year ago

Hello this is Brooklyn Crawford helping Dr.Verma win the teacher of the year award. Dr.Verma is a great 6th grade math teacher, he let's us get snacks when we do something good and he's funny and his math lessons are fun to do and he asks us if we want to sit in the comfy chairs and sometimes he asks us if we want to help him during fifth period and I like having him first period, I think he's a fun teacher because he does fun stuff on fun Fridays and he let's us learn from our mistakes by a fix it ticket, and if we make it to our one hundred mark on our point cards he will let us eat pizza and let us eat Takis brownies and play with bubbles he plays music when he's in a good mood SOMETIMES only if it's a fun day, and I like being able to eat snacks on a fun day because who doesn't love food from the best teacher in the world. from Brooklyn Crawford

So Dr. Verma a good teacher, he can teach well... Anyways, he's entertaining, funny, and a good teacher. Dr. Verma rewards his students with snacks which is good.

Jimmy Knox Posted over a year ago

Dr. Verma has been the best math 6th grade teacher since I got to Bessemer City Middle School. He makes the lessons easy, the way he demonstrates them. I am actually on the planting team here at BCMS. From setting up to when we measure every week he always finds a way to make it fun. He also awards us with pizza parties only if our class period has the most points. We also have a lot of memories with our teacher Dr. Verma. We have many photos of us on the wall in the classroom and on the hallway. On Halloween day, it was fun and funny because all our main teachers Ms. Pugh, Ms. Cureton and the counselor Ms. Veitch and technology teacher Mr. McClain had on bowling pin costumes. Dr. Verma had on a bowling ball costume. So he ran down the hallway and hit them! Nobody was hurt tho it was all planned. The plan that Dr. Verma made. That's how creative our math teacher can get. But that's not the best thing he ever did. He also does a lot of other fun things with us. He also knows when to joke around and not to joke around. That's what makes his personality great. He is also very respectful. He always say good morning to the teachers. He also made us shirts that has our faces on there. He also put the couples by each other. He has a lot more planned for us in the future too. He has managed to break up a buncha fights in reading without anyone getting harmed too. That shows his strength. He also has a lot of energy during our pep rallys. At one pep rally, when it was 6th grades turn to make a lot of noise Dr. Verma started banging a chair on the ground and the principal told him we just got the gym floor redone but it's OK because We did end up winning. These are the reasons that Dr. Verma should win this award.

Lorenzo Jenkins Posted over a year ago

The reason I think my math teacher at Bessemer City Middle school Dr.verma should get the money because he will buy us stuff and he will probably will buy more stuff for his classes and his classroom so it can be more math like. Another reason he should get the money he could use it towards the school so he can help his environment. The next reason that he should get the money is he is caring so he will probably give some to some charity or the homeless or he might give his peers and his bosses some because he caring and very loving. He always try to keep his students in check and always help his students when they need it and hes a good teacher/person. Bessemer has a lot of crime but Dr.verma still teaches us here because he likes his jobs and his kids. He also makes educational jokes about math and throws his classes parties. He basically is a great teacher and. He made a video against bullying and we will go on field trips very cool places. He also goes to his students football games, baseball games and his students basketball games. He checks up on the kids moms to make sure that their okay and the students are being demure and being very good to our parents. He also dresses proper like a professional teacher and a math genius that he is. He is very nice he has a big prize box under his desk that with snacks he give out if your being good and answer questions in a outstanding way or if your being brave and the only one answering the question or questions. Thanks for being a perfect teacher Dr.v

Aaliyah Lewis Posted over a year ago

My name is Aaliyah Lewis and I am a 6th grader at Bessemer city middle school and Dr. Yuvraj Verma is my math teacher. I am writing to help him win this Teacher of the Year Award for being a LifeChanger. He helps us with stuff we do not understand. He made us all shirts with our faces on it and no other teacher has done that before. We had pet therapy that was fun. He makes Jokes every now and then that make his class more fun and funny. And makes learning fun and easy. He gives us parties if our class do right and do work that makes us do better. And he makes a wall of pictures for every thing we do, that make his class popular. He is a balance of funny and caring but very strict and mean if somebody is bad or if a different teacher sends somebody to his classroom for being bad. He texts our parents if we get good grades. He also cleans the dirty hallways and tries to get us to if we see anything on the floor when we walk. He teaches us math and how to be good citizens...He has a lot of energy and is very happy. I was in his class for 2pd and 4pd one day because a teacher was absent and there was no sub and he taught the math work the same way so he doesn’t get lazy even though most men are lazy. If Dr. Verma wins the 10 000 dollars then maybe he can get a house and a wife and kids and spend some for us!!

Marquis Bonner Posted over a year ago

he is a cool teacher he's very different because he don't yell and fuss a lot but sometime he screams for a second to get everybody quit in the hallway or when there a fight in ela or some this nice man always looking out for me and texts my mom to make sure im straight he has a snack box if we didn't have breakfast or if we get points and he gives us extra sweat shirts if we cold he has a good spirit except if you get on his nerves because you goofy or a fool

Hope Davis Posted over a year ago

Theres amazing things that Dr. verma has done...like teaching us. He is awesome at his job. He is also very funny. He thinks our social studies teacher Mrs. Pugh will give him a chance lol. I got into some fights but not in his class and he still treats people with dignity and love even if they get into fights and doesn’t treat them as bad kids. He is caring even tho he a man and funny but when you’re bad or get kicked out of a class and sent to him he got a really really really mean side but he goes and talks to calmly one and one after but it’s funny to watch him get on people when they bad. But over all he's a great teacher that make it fun to learn every single day

Dr. Verma is a very nice teacher. He is very kind and teaches math. He is very good at teaching math he taught us ratios in one week we were getting all the answers correct. One day we were learning about ratios and we did a M&M's lab where we opened a box of M&M's and sorted the colors then we used them like ratios one was like what is the ratio orange to brown M&M's I remember the ratio was about 9 orange to 6 brown M&M's we had to put it in all three ways you can put a ratio as 9:6 9/6 and 9 to 6 ratios are kind of fun to put in order but sometimes it is hard to put them in order Dr Verma also let us get pet therapy and a golden tan dog that was big and cute we even got pictures I think Dr Verma is the best teacher because he is cool and always helps out and he always ship people that somehow actually get together he is the best teacher and I hope you give him the 10,000 so he can have a vacation and his rent before hand please send the money *smile*

Dr .Verma is the best teacher. He is the best ever he is fun and strict at the same time that make more funner. For my opinion that this the coolest, funnest teacher I think that he is my best math teacher yet.We can do activites in his class only if we finish our that the work that hard he make it way easier. He like to rizz teachers and he dress up correctly with a tie, he clean the school in our hallways like crumble papers and pencils, he make funny jokes. that are really funny and he always does stuff for us he will help us if we struggle. my teacher know how to teach his class. We help our teacher too with stuff and he let us hang out at specials

Victor Allen Posted over a year ago

Dr.Verma is the best teacher in 6th grade at Bessemer. he always tries to rizz up teachers to make them laugh but sometimes it doesn't work everytime. He is funny and people are always laughing with him because his jokes are funny sometimes he makes funny jokes about work and everything. Dr.Verma helps people with stuff they don't know and some of them know what to do but in other class they act like they don't know how to be good and they aren't good for nothing. We help Dr.Verma put stuff up on the walls and in the classroom but we don't do a lot of things for him that much because he decorates mostly.

Keoni Clark Posted over a year ago

Hello my name is Keoni Clark and this comment will be about my amazing and caring teacher. My Math Teacher Dr.Yuvraj Verma is a amazing teacher and he cares for all his students and surprises us with awards or snacks if we good. My teacher is caring, nice, and fantastic. When we do good in class, attendance, behavior and participation, he makes us as one of the four monthly math masters (students of the month). He picks one for all of his four periods. If we are nominated for a math master he gifts us a five through 20 dollar gift card. The gift card options are Amazon, Roblox, Target, Walmart, Olive Garden, AppleBee's or Wingstop. Also he works well with kids he makes learning fun and with jokes. We have pet therapy every month on Friday. We also have upcoming field trips also. I am on the Plant the Moon Challenge team, where we are growing spinach seeds in Moon soil. Every month on the last Friday we have fun Friday. What fun Friday means is that the student who has the correct behavior goes into the other teachers room who's hosting fun Friday we watch a movie, draw, and etc. Also with all this information that I just said, I conclude that this is why I think that my math teacher Dr.Verma should win the 10,000 dollars that you guys are rewarding the teachers with.

Brenda Rivera Posted over a year ago

Dr.Verma makes funny jokes even tho i don't laugh at them. He makes the class fun even if i don't like math. He makes the lesson easy by breaking it down for us to understand it more. He made shirts of our faces with all the teachers on them . People had done some pet therapy but i didn't go because i didn't give the permission slip but it was alright because i already have therapy??. He also plans field trips and other stuff. I knew Mr. Verma when I was in 4th grade and just finished middle school. In 5th grade I had Mr. Verma for a robotics coding class after school. It was called CoderZ. It was a lot of fun to do when there was COVID going around and I wanted to play with my friends at there house or go outside to the store. We won the competition the second time! Also I remember he said he was in school to be a doctor but it's weird he's Dr. Verma because I call him Mr. Verma or the V Man! Mr. Verma is very nice and excited. He was funny and caring to all the kids. The only time I heard him scream was when a kindergartener hugged him and started using Mr. Verma tie to clean his nose but that kid was weird. Mr. Verma use to dress up for pajama day and the 100th day of school. He always smiled. He played with us at recess. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely loved Mr. Verma as my daughter Kaylie math and science teacher when she was in 5th grade at Martha Gaskins Elementary!! He coached some of his kids thru a robotics competition and they came in 1st Place in the nation and that got my daughter more excited to learn her favorite subject math and Mr. Verma got the team an all expenses paid trip to Florida for a few days. He also did a lot of field trips so I was able to see how he communicated with the kids and I absolutely loved it!! He also made a video with the kids about anti bullying and they won that too. My daughter graduated from his class but he keeps in touch to wish my family during the holidays. Mr. Verma always wanted the best for his kids and for them to be recognized so now it's his turn. He was so involved as a teacher and we need more of that instead of teachers who are complaining and leaving. I never wondered what was happening in his class because he was always communicating and texting about the happenings in his class. Mr. Verma is such a blessing!! Congratulations and thx for all that you do.

I have known Yuvraj since 2017 when we were students together at Relay and I have valued his friendship and have always found Yuvraj to be extremely compassionate, dependable, intelligent, loyal, and always willing to help or provide a listening ear. Yuvraj has always given me wonderful advice and I know I can always count on him, as he is extremely reliable and trustworthy, and possesses all of the amazing traits and qualities that make him a talented teacher and a wonderful friend to be around. I had the pleasure of working across the hall with Yuvraj the summer of 2017. Yuvraj was a wonderful teacher and role model for the kids, regardless of whether or not they were in his classroom. I have never met someone with such a passion for teaching and fighting education inequity. He is truly invested and believes in his students and the work that we do as teachers. I am very fortunate to have met Yuvraj and known him as both a colleague and a friend.

I met Yuvraj Verma when we were students at the Relay Graduate School of Education. I could see that Yuvraj was charismatic, engaging, and an all-around great friend. He made friends everywhere he went and I could tell his students loved him. During my free time he and I, and other corp members would share our fears about teaching and being a first year teacher. I and other folks knew we could always count on Yuvraj to bring our spirits up. His sunny personality and his jokes went a long way on days when I felt down. I have known Yuvraj Verma for seven years. He is of impeccable character. He is one of those rare people you meet whose genuine joy and excitement for teaching is infectious and, for the haters, sometimes enviable. Yuvraj has successfully brought smiles and trust into his classroom. He has furnished the classroom with Donors Choose funds, which demonstrates his ability to fundraise and share his love of teaching.

He does not give up on children no matter how hard they can act and guides them correctly even if they don’t understand that his advice and rules is correct and will help them in the future. He reaches out about how my grand son is doing and makes me aware of what is happening in class and talks on phone calls as long as I need him to because he has a heart and is part of my grand son team. Dr. Verma. By far is one of my favorite teacher in my 6 consecutive years here at Chalkville. He works hard and has 25 kids and he still finds the time arrange field trips, clubs, and more. He danced with my mom at the christmas party and then I got points. Our wall outside is decorated with pictures and memories and especially our door which is decorated with rewards our class got. We been on the news numerous times and he gives he fun opportunities to do things. He is funny, strict. I wish we did more science, but we did science clubs like robotics and astrobotany. One of my friends is trying to copy me and do robotics in another school. We have pizza parties if we get to 100 points on our point card and we get to have fun with our second grade classmate buddies when we do science activities like building bridges with marshmallows and toothpicks. We get snacks in the snack bin if we get 100 points, but once there were ants in the bin and that's better than rats or any rat infested school.

Yuvraj wrote a great article for us at TEACH Magazine entitled "Bridging Content Gaps: The Importance of Vertical Alignment." His insights and personal anecdotes about utilizing vertical alignment in his own classroom will be of great use to other teachers. As the Assistant Editor at TEACH, I worked closely with him throughout the publishing process. He was a pleasure to work with, very easy-going and always friendly in his communications. Just by reading the comments on this page, it's clear that Yuvraj has impacted the lives of many students, and I'm thankful that a teacher who obviously cares a lot about his profession and the work he does wanted to contribute to TEACH's online publication. I thank him for sharing his experiences with us, and wish him the best with this award. It couldn't go to a more deserving person.

I got to know Yuvraj, (Raj), in 2016 when he worked as a summer tutor for the NYSED Liberty Partnerships Program, which is a program that supports students that come from Title I schools and are in danger of failing. The Summer Institute provided high school and middle school students with academic skills reinforcement, social skills, and enrichment activities. As Director of the program, I was able to observe how Raj worked and interacted with the students over the course of the program. I was quite impressed with Raj’s compassion and empathy for our students. He has a very kind way of dealing with individuals who struggle academically. He intuitively knew how to help the students succeed and feel good about themselves, while maintaining high expectations for them. He was motivated, enthusiastic, and generous with his assistance and support of the students. I'm so glad he followed his heart and pursued teaching. His students are very fortunate to have him as their teacher. He’s a wonderful, well-rounded young man. He works extremely hard at everything he does, and holds himself to very high standards.

I was one of Mr. Verma’s supervisors when he took on the role of Lead Teacher at Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (Saratoga Family Residence). Mr. Verma maintained a positive disposition with the residents throughout his time at the family shelter and introduced students to progressive learning. Mr. Verma implemented significant changes to our schedule in order to prioritize social and emotional learning. An important part of children’s development and a focal point that will remain in our program’s objective. As Lead teacher, Mr. Verma’s role was to observe classes and provide feedback to group leaders, he went a step further and provided lessons for the group leaders that incorporate social emotional learning. He created our lesson plan template, facilitated a virtual training for staff, and established effective structure for our students. He had good relationships with students in kindergarten all the way to high school. Raj works with purpose and is passionately motivated by teaching and learning.

Torain Davis Posted over a year ago

When I think of Dr. Yuvraj Verma, what come to my mind is the word excellent. He is a teacher of the highest quality, great virtue; of great worth; and great dignity. Dr. Verma loves his students and you can truly tell that. He taught my son, Jeremiah at Martha Gaskins Elementary School, when he was in fifth grade last year. He is now at a specialty middle school. Dr. Verma would text you and let you know if your child has done well on a test, then show you your child's grade. He is always keeping you inform of what is going on in the classroom and with your child. Helping others is a choice that we all have to make in life. We either want to help others, or we don't. But Dr. Verma has proven that his heart is for the children of the City of Birmingham. I'm sure that he could have went somewhere else but he chose this city and our kids. (we are truly blessed) I highly recommend Dr. Verma, because you can tell without a shadow of doubt that he loves his students, and he loves his job. What I have noticed the most about Dr. Verma, is that he loves to serve others and serving others is the very essence of love. I would like to close with this Matthew 25:21 well done, good and faithful servant.

Yuvraj Verma is outstanding. I knew he was exceptional from the day I met him when he was a Kindergarten student and attended a concert I performed at his school (I’m a National touring artist and songwriter for children). At five years old, he came up afterwards to introduce himself and later attended many concerts with his family. When he entered 4th grade, I invited him to co-host a radio show I hosted out of Hofstra University which interviewed children’s songwriters and performers from around the world. Yuvraj was so popular on the air he was invited back many times, often asking if his sister and cousin could join him to co-host, as he wanted to share the spotlight and encourage others. Reading his accolades just now brought tears to my eyes. it is no surprise to hear of his many achievements and how much his students love him. The quote by Theodore Roosevelt he chose to end his synopsis is so appropriate - “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Yuvraj genuinely cares, and will continue to enrich lives and touch hearts for many years. I am proud to know him and am cheering him on in his many endeavors.

We came just a few points short to get our ticket to the finals. Those were my best memories ever with you as a teacher

I remember Mr. Verma my 5th grade teacher along side Ms.Charles at Riverdale Avenue community school, I think it was his first class, my mom use to joke as he's the youngest person she's seen with such dedication towards the understanding and determination to see all the students succeed, even after I left elementary school if I needed help, you always tried to find a way to help me, I've copied a little of that determination to achieve what I want. I'm in the 10th grade but as of now I'll be graduating at the age of 16. Hopefully I can keep up my GPA. But I really wanted to thank you even during the pandemic you reached out to do a reunion for the kids that a lot of teachers forgot about to keep up our spirits especially with all that was going on in the world. Thank you. Your always appreciated and prayers will continue to go out to you and I hope you keep up all that you do for us kids. Sometimes you feel like your not important enough and then you drop a text, Wishing happy holidays etc. We appreciate you. We applaud you. We're grateful to have come across you and your perseverance to accommodate others in your life, even when your plate looks full you find a way. Thanks Dr. Verma.

Anyways, congratulations again and I hope you make it even further!

My name is Amber Sepulveda. Yuvraj Verma is one of the most compassionate and responsive individuals I had gotten to know thru Relay's graduate school. His passion for teaching surpasses those of many others. He is invested and determined to make sure his students are receiving a high-quality education and that all students have access to the curriculum. I have seen Yuvraj spend countless hours modifying and perfecting his lesson plans to meet the needs of every single one of his students. It became clear to me, early on, that Yuvraj is a conscientious person and he objectively shows that he cares about his students. I believe every teacher should learn from Yuvraj’s application of what it means to have “Students at the center of our work”. I wish more teachers would defend students with a selfless and loving heart as Yuvraj.

I was Yuvraj Verma’s direct supervisor at Our World Neighborhood Charter School 2 as the Special Education Coordinator when he taught Kindergarten during the '18-19 school year. Mr. Verma (I knew him before he was Dr) has integrity, dedication and a do what it takes mentality. He has great interpersonal skills and is a team player. He goes above and beyond to teach his students. Mr. Verma has excellent management skills and has a talent for reaching all students. He is fair, caring and fun. He makes sure his students enjoy learning. Mr. Verma demonstrates strength in his attitude, professionalism, classroom management and ability to establish a rapport with parents and students. Raj brought a youthful personality, unmatched work ethic and a love for teaching all students.

Congratulations Dr. Verma and I hope you win the $10,000 and you can give me some. Thank you for being a good teacher to me and coming to martha gaskins. In martha gaskins elementary school Dr. Verma was my fun 5th grade teacher he let us go on field trips that other classes didn’t do and we had pizza parties when we won something at school. Another reason he my most favorite teacher is because he a silly teacher and a smart teacher. I think he should be a teacher forever. He is funny sometimes and serious sometimes but he need to be more fun by letting us get more free time when we was good. Dr. Verma always had a smile on his face and was always funny and excited to teach us new work. He buy us snacks for the prize ben and he let us get snacks when we was good and got a 100 points on are point card and let us get a snack. We also had fun when he was are after school teacher and played fun games and we taught him to play football but he couldn’t throw or catch that good and he was trash at shooting basketballs. We got to go on a field trip to florida the zoo a farm the library an airplane museum McWane science center and more and we went downtown to the mayor’s building to win awards and medals for winning robotics and the stop bullying video we all of us did. We got to be on the news a lot in his class when we won stuff. Dr. Verma got us a shirt with are class on it and we had a Christmas party that was a lot of fun and he got us presents. No one ever got in to a fight because we sing 2 4 6 8 who do we appreciate in the morning meeting and sometimes played 4 corners when we was good and didn’t talk a lot so he didn’t have to say yooooo or ayyy chill man if we talked a lot or he put our clips down. He texted are mom and aunty if we got a 100 on iReady and on are math and science tests.

Christopher Eugene Knight Posted over a year ago

Hello. I am a sixth grade student that goes to McAdory middle school. In fifth grade I went to Martha Gaskins elementary. My teacher was Dr. Verma for math and science and Mrs. Spencer for reading and social studies. From those two I think Dr. Verma was an amazing teacher. He was also very funny. I loved the way he teached us. Dr. Verma was much better than my math teacher now. Sometimes he yelled at us when we were bad and disappointed him because people distracted people from doing assignments, but mainly he was friendly and funny with a kind heart. He was also helpful. Even if he was mad at us for behaving badly he did not hold it against us and moved on in the next day or two. Dr. Verma also knows spanish so he translated spanish words for my classmates who needed it. He took us on a lot of field trips and gave us snacks and other prizes when we behaved and had 100 points. We all were on the news when we won an antibullying competition (the video is on YouTube). Dr. Verma was pretty much a perfect teacher to me and my classmates. These are the reasons why I think my old teacher Dr. Verma should win the life changer award this year. I hope he gives me some of the money if he wins.

Keturah McCormick Posted over a year ago

My name is Ms Keturah McCormick and I believe Dr. Yuvraj Verma possesses wonderful qualities and is THE ONLY teacher who deserves to win Life Changer of the Year Award. I am a parent/guardian of Rahjay Wellman, who was one of Dr. Verma’s students and member of Dr. Verma’s 1st place winning Robotics Team at Martha Gaskins Elementary School. I came to know Dr. Verma as a wonderful, caring and compassionate teacher. He is an optimistic hard-working individual with an extremely pleasant personality. He has talents that are beneficial. I am in awe of Dr. Verma’s big heart and versatility, he treats every student and parent with the same care, respect and concern as he would the President of the United States. Dr. Verma is an honest and very trustworthy individual. I have never seen Dr. Verma become rude, nasty or disrespectful towards anyone. Dr. Verma is the type of person that’s always searching and yearning for more knowledge. Dr. Verma never ceases to amaze me when it comes to supporting, nurturing, encouraging and showing up for his students. Even though Rahjay is in 6th grade now, he knows that Mr. Verma has his best interest at heart and he can call or text him if he needs help with homework or someone to simply listen to him. These are the reasons why Dr. Verma has my support for the Life Changer of the Year Award because he changed the life of Rahjay, but changed the lives of all of his 5th grade students last year for the better.

Dr. Verma was my son 5th grade teacher at Martha Gaskin Elementary School. For some teachers, it’s a good career and a paycheck. For Dr. Verma it’s truly a passion and a calling. The way he bonds, builds relationships, and magnifies the gifts and talents his students have is nothing short of amazing. He made sure they were apart of things that stretched their skills and abilities. It built their confidence, and before long they were winners of multiple competitions. They were being recognized at the school, then in the city, they across the state. He made them champions. He made them stand out, so much so that his Robotics Team end up with an all expense paid trip to Disney world in Orlando Florida this past May 2023. He not only made them winner and champions, he also made sure they got an experience of a lifetime. It was some of their first time riding on an airplane. Some of their first time at Disney World. My son was blessed to have really good Teachers during elementary school, but Dr. Verma is extraordinary. His genuine care and dedication extended beyond the classroom. He would show up to extracurricular and sports activities with posters he made to support his students and the school. He is one of the absolute best Teachers I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and he is well deserving of the Life Changer of the year nomination. I literally witness firsthand him change lives.

I met Dr. Yuvraj Verma while vacationing on a cruise. I was struck by his passion and dedication for educating his students. His moral code is clear and I’d be hard pressed to find anyone as congenial as he. We had many good conversations while on that vacation and I dare say he is the type of passionate educator I’d want my children to have.

I knew Yuvraj Verma at Riverdale Avenue Community School. His personality and his relationships with others was excellent. He has a lot of knowledge and if you know him he’s just there to help. Whatever curriculum he got, he made it creative for his students. He's an advocate for children. All educators should advocate the same. It was always a pleasure being in his class. He is dedicated to his growth as an educator. I witnessed that Raj's heart and sole is in education.

I’m delighted to support my former student, Dr. Yuvraj Verma, for this outstanding award. Dr, Verma completed multiple courses with me at Iona University in route to successfully finishing his degree in sociology . He was always extremely engaged, thoughtfully contributing to the class and the campus culture. He exhibited himself to be respectful and caring of others and socially conscious. He is well deserving of this community award!

I know Dr.Verma from Martha Gaskins Elementary School 5th grade. He is an excellent teacher he helps children one on one if they don’t fully understand. He makes learning so much fun and not boring. We were on the news and we got to meet the mayor and went to the board of education. We did an anti-bullying video to show kids it’s not right to bully other and the effect of them bullying kids. When we got a certain amount of A’s on test he gave us treats and etc to reward us!! When we was in afterschool care he didn’t just make us sit in the class room bored we worked on homework and played games. He took both of his classes on field trips every year. We won the robotics and we got a trip to Florida from the Birmingham Mayors.

Congratulations, Dr. Verma! You’re amazing!!! I'm so proud of you!!! Reading the nomination, your biography and the comments made my day. Yuvraj Verma was a tutor at the Success Center. I was the Director of the center. Raj was one of the best we had and the kids and families were so very fortunate to have him. He did a lot of his work well in advance and didn’t wait till the last minute to get his work accomplished. He prioritized his role and always did the extras.

He teached us everything well and right so we can get a better understanding to things and he teached the small groups well because he got all the people who don’t understand and helped us so they can know the most that they can know so when we take a test we pass. we learned a lot through the year and he was very nice and had taken us on field trips and let us have the Christmas party and he got the Robotics Team to go to Orlando Florida he teached us how to be professional when important people was interviewing us or the people came to talk about winning the robotics championship so he practiced with us before they came to inter view us. And he teaches math the way so we got a better understanding so that when we took a test we know what to do so we can get a great grade. we learned a lot of stuff in mr verma class he was a very great teacher and the best math teacher.

Had the privilege of working with Yuvraj all throughout graduate school. Yuvraj has a unique ability to comprehend content material and relate it from the POV of his students and co-teachers. This is one of the many reasons he has been able to distinguish himself with accolades, including a PhD at such a young age. Yuvraj ‘s commitment to his students is evident in his classrooms, workspaces, and extracurricular activities. It’s amazing to witness the powerful impact a caring teacher can have - I expect to hear of many more achievements as Yuvraj continues his career in education.

Throughout, Yuvraj had proven himself to be a remarkable young man, holding himself to high standards of academic excellence and demonstrating a strong commitment to the field of education. Yuvraj had consistently been a dedicated student who had demonstrated regularly the values of hard work, intellectual engagement, and a passion for teaching. In his class assignments, Yuvraj had infused both creativity and rigor, giving evidence of an exceptional ability to think critically and creatively. At the same time, in his field work, Yuvraj had shown maturity, thoughtful reflection, and a genuine desire to help children grow to their fullest potential. We taught at Martha Gaskins. He persevered in that atypical environment. Raj knows to connect with his students and their parents is what teachers have to do. He is a hard worker. He looked at the data of his students on every day and asked questions for how they could score higher. In my 10 plus years teaching, Raj is one of the best teachers I have worked with. I taught alongside Yuvraj Verma during the 2017-18 school year, his first year as a teacher, at Riverdale Avenue Community School. Raj was one of the most tireless and innovative teachers I’ve worked with. The students I saw him teach were 5th graders, who were “seniors” in the lower school, which meant they thought they were too cool for anything. Nothing made Raj happier than breaking through that exterior and bringing out the love of learning that is emblematic of children, helping them to have fun. Raj had a lot of successes creating community. Teaching was truly a full-time occupation for Raj, in every sense of the word. When we talked after school or outside school, he’d talk about school. He was always thinking about which kids he wasn’t quite reaching yet and how he was planning to reach them. I think because of his youthful appearance, many parents assumed he was in some sort of junior role. Raj’s enthusiasm and ability to relate to children did little to dispel this impression, but Raj still built relationships with many parents who appreciated his dedication to their children and his willingness to engage with them.

I am glad that Raj and I got to work together. He is passionate, respectful and has a great sense of humor! It’s amazing that he graduated early from college and it was also inspiring to see someone so young begin so early in their career. I know Raj from Success Center and he is going to keep doing great things and that his students are so lucky and grateful to have him. He is making a difference in their world. It’s stressful, but I know he is making it and won’t give up. As a teacher, Raj is doing something very special that many people don’t get to experience and don’t have the talent to do. I’m proud of Raj!

Yuvraj’s positive attitude is evident, even contagious, when he works with students. Elementary school fits him well, as he is as excited as his students seem to be. His positive temperament and light-heartedness is exactly the attitude the students need. Yuvraj cares about his students.

Greg Sutterlin Posted over a year ago

Yuvraj Verma was a student in two of my Religious Studies classes – at Iona College. He has a fine mind and readily applies himself to whatever tasks are assigned to him. Yuvraj is well read and always eager to add to his knowledge. In the classroom discussion process, he was able to state and defend his thoughts and ideas without over powering or belittling anyone else. In addition, he could also accept the critiques of others as opportunities for growth. He was consistently well prepared and his written assignments showed both thoroughness and sophistication. In addition to these academic qualities, Yuvraj is a polite, respectful, friendly person who was always well-liked by his peers and well-regarded by his instructors. He has a good sense of humor and can readily laugh at himself – always a sign of a good self-image. It was a pleasure to have Yuvraj as a student and we have remained in touch with one another over the years. I am convinced that Yuvraj will succeed at whatever he attempts – academically and vocationally. Of all the students I have had the pleasure to instruct for the past four decades, Yuvraj is clearly in the top tier. He is a superb student.
