"Maria Torres is coming up on 28 years at Lakewood High School. She has been helping inner-city school kids for decades. Maria created opportunities for students and saw their ability to shine when others did not give them that same opportunity. She now teaches kids of her original students, having taught multiple generations of families. She is now head of the Science Department at Lakewood High School and educates other teachers with the same patience and grace she began her career with 28 years ago," said Manabat.
