Music that Describes Velda
Velda Benjamin Gilyot was nominated by a colleague, LaTosha Bennett.
"Velda Benjamin Gilyot, M. Ed., is our 8th/9th-grade school counselor at St. Augustine HS. She makes every effort to support students in their academic, social, and emotional development. Velda's role involves a range of responsibilities that help students overcome difficult challenges, make informed decisions, and give them steps toward achieving success," said Bennett.
Academic Guidance
Mrs. Gilyot goes above and beyond developing academic plans and setting educational goals for the students she serves. She includes the entire academic/behavior team, parent(s), and student when deciding what choices are best for or that may hinder the learner.
Career Counseling
Even though her students are in 8th/9th grade, she helps them explore potential career options early by assisting them in identifying their interests and understanding their strengths.
Social and Emotional Support
Mrs. Gilyot is self-aware, empathetic, flexible, and patient. She and her students have a custom rapport, which is no easy task when helping students navigate personal challenges such as relationships, family issues, and mental health concerns. Still, Mrs. Gilyot has a specific energy that enables her to connect with anyone.
Crisis Intervention/ Conflict Resolution
"In times of crisis, Mrs. Gilyot is always there to provide immediate support and coordinate resources to ensure the learner's well-being. She helps students address conflicts with their peers or, in rare cases, with a teacher. Velda teaches them effective communication and conflict-resolution skills, which helps contribute to our positive and respectful school environment at St. Augustine. The goal is to help students to have self-control, self-awareness, perseverance, and focus," said Bennett.
"Aside from this, Mrs. Gilyot advocates for the needs and well-being of students and works with teachers to collaborate for student success. Also, she constantly communicates with parents and administrators to create a supportive and inclusive school environment. Velda has a plan that addresses issues like bullying and mental health awareness to prevent problems before they arise. She often collaborates with parents to support her students' overall development. She's a true LifeChanger," said Bennett.
"I nominate Mrs. Velda Benjamin Gilyou, M. ED., overall because she plays a critical role in fostering our schools' positive and conducive learning environment by ensuring that students receive the necessary support to thrive academically and emotionally. She attends to the whole student," said Bennett.
