Marcus Wiggins was nominated by a friend, Kimberly Gandy.
"I would like to nominate Marcus D. Wiggins for the National Life Group LifeChanger of the Year award. I have known Marcus Wiggins for over 20 years. I first met him when he came to my school as a math teacher and basketball coach. Watching him go from a young mathematics teacher to a veteran administrator has been an amazing journey. As a coach, mentor, advocate, friend, parent, supporter, and much more to so many, whether you were in his classroom, colleague, or on his team, he serves as a magnet to both kids and adults alike," said Gandy.
"His desire to demonstrate excellence at whatever he takes on is always reflected in his teaching and coaching. His high standards in and out of the classroom continue to produce champions and scholars. Mr. Wiggins is a leader who quickly became a favorite among the staff and kids. I watched him build a championship basketball team, advocate equity for all kids, support kids in and out of school, and fill school activities, trips, and gyms. Kids sought to be a part of Mr. Wiggins' team as players, student assistants, score/stat keepers, videographers, team tutors, or whatever was needed. Being part of the team meant you were part of the family. Being part of Mr. Wiggins' 'family' meant you had a fierce advocate for your success. Whether that meant academic help, social-emotional support, something to eat, somewhere to sleep, a ride to a college visit, or another important event, he extended himself to whatever help you needed at the time and after you graduated. Yes, it even meant if you needed some cash," said Gandy.
"I remember a young man who came to our school to play basketball for Mr. Wiggins. As a coach, he kept an eye on all his students on the court and in the classroom. I could see this young man was a talented player on the basketball court, but it wasn't until I had him in class that I learned he was also academically savvy. Looking back, I see a parallel between Mr. Wiggins' story and his. I watched Mr. Wiggins ensure this young man had all the opportunities and guidance for success. Working with him and his parents, Mr. Wiggins watched as he took and succeeded in classes that would support his college preparation. The student attended college visits and submitted applications on time. Mr. Wiggins spoke with coaches, made films about his basketball performance, etc. I watched the student go to the state basketball championship game with his team, graduate from high school and college, and become a dad. Over the years, life happened, and when there was a bump in his road, Mr. Wiggins was a trusted resource. This type of relationship and commitment to students would play out repeatedly in Mr. Wiggins' teaching career. Mr. Wiggins once told me he wanted to be all the things he thought he needed as a kid to his kids. I believe he has been that and so much more," said Gandy.
"I have watched him pour his heart and soul into his family, community, and all of his kids, biological or not, for over two decades. I was pleased when Mr. Wiggins moved from the classroom to a leadership position. His coaching, teaching, and community-building gifts are too valuable not to be spread among fellow educators. He must have the opportunity to teach other leaders how to be great—his vision for inclusion, equity, and excellence must be shared on a larger platform. I am extremely proud and humbled to have witnessed his kindness and compassion to strangers. He has been the friend, father, teacher, and savior for many of his students and players. For these reasons, I wish to nominate Marcus D. Wiggins for LifeChanger of the Year," said Gandy.
