Position: Special Education Teacher

School District: Plainview-Elgin-Millville Community School
City, State: Elgin, MN
Gretchen Meyer was nominated by her principal, Clark Olstad.
"One word to describe Ms. Meyer would be awesome! One of Ms. Meyer's greatest strengths is her ability to work with feisty, energetic boys. She is fantastic at holding boys accountable for their actions and truly enjoys it! Her students occasionally try to challenge and dig in their heels to refuse to complete a task. Gretchen never loses, she holds firm, is consistent, and always requires the students to complete work and be responsible for their behavior," said Olstad. "It is entertaining for me to watch an older student explain to a younger student working with Ms. Meyer that they are not going to win, and they should just accept that Ms. Meyer is in charge and will never give in!"
"Most importantly, Gretchen is an incredible Mother and understands that her family is the most important thing in her life. Her entire family is truly fortunate to have her in their life. Interestingly, she also has three happy, energetic boys at home. Gretchen is a 'Boy Mom' at home and school," said Olstad.
Mr. Olstad recalled a quote from Helen Keller. "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence."
"Gretchen has the unique ability to start each day as a new opportunity and a fresh beginning for all her students. In her classroom, her students clearly understand that Gretchen believes in them, and that confidence carries over into the students. In return, they work harder, make enormous gains academically and socially, and become a better person. I have occasionally joked with the entire staff, specifically the special education 4-8 team, about who my 'favorite is.' As a principal, I do not have a 'favorite' staff member. But, if I did, Gretchen is my 'favorite.' Ms. Meyer is a wonderful person who has picked the right career in education. Her impact on students and colleagues will have a positive impact in the long term throughout their lives. She is, and will continue to be, a LifeChanger to many students and families at Plainview-Elgin-Millville Community Schools!" Olstad said.
