Sydney Hebel was nominated by a member in the community, Michael Vitale.

Ms. Hebel's journey in sports and education has led her to a fulfilling career as an adapted physical education teacher in the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Her unwavering dedication to creating inclusive opportunities for students with diverse abilities is truly inspiring. Collaborating with the Special Olympics has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her job, allowing her to witness the joy and confidence that sports bring to these incredible athletes. This role merges her lifelong passion for sports with her commitment to helping others, ensuring that everyone can experience the benefits of lifelong health and physical activity.

"From a young age, Sydney was often the only girl playing sports with the boys at recess and after school. Last year, she discovered a new passion for women's tackle football and immediately fell in love, fully committing to the sport. Despite her love for football, Sydney never imagined playing at a higher level. This experience deepened her appreciation for the diversity and depth of athletics, reminding her why she fell in love with sports in the first place. Whether playing on the field, coaching from the sidelines, teaching in the gym, or cheering from the stands, sports remain an integral part of who Sydney is, driving her to inspire others to find their love for the game and to promote inclusion in all aspects of sports," said Vitale.

Ms. Hebel's rapid growth as a leader in the Detroit Prowl football team is truly impressive. She is incredibly grateful to her team and coaches for providing such a powerful experience in her first season. As a brand-new football player, she had never even put on full gear before joining the team. From day one, she was fully engaged in learning, quickly growing into a leader. By midseason, this rookie was preparing the team for the future, ultimately helping to lead them to an undefeated season and a national championship victory. Her coach is in awe of what she has accomplished in the last 12 months, seeing her as a prime example of what we want our daughters to be: a leader, an example, and as of July 20th, a world champion. Ms. Hebel's future in football and life is limitless, and she looks forward to seeing the next generation of young women follow in her footsteps.

Sydney Hebel is the type of woman you want your daughters to grow up to be. Just being around her, you can sense there's something different. It hit me about two months after I met her, she's a teacher. But not just any teacher, she's an adaptive phys ed teacher and THAT just starts the list. She's leading the charge to introduce football to the Special Olympics, while starting her career PLAYING women's football at a very high level. Sydney joined the quarterback group and quickly asserted herself as a leader. She played three other positions besides QB, including making HUGE stops defensively in both the conference AND World Championship games helping us remain undefeated. Sydney is CHANGING the world on and off the field!
