Music that Describes Dusty
Dusty Spence has been nominated anonymously.
"Ms. Spence is the definition of a LifeChanger! She has taught all of my children over the years, both in a private school and as they have continued virtually in public school, and she has tutored them in college," said the nominator. "Over her decades of teaching in both the private and public sectors (both in person and virtually), she has changed the lives of many students, parents, and future teachers she has mentored. She has taught every grade level over the years and kids across every economic, emotional, and academic spectrum."
"She not only provides her students with information, but she gives them the belief that they can accomplish anything they are determined to work for. Ms. Spence attends after-school activities and sports events, visits homes, and is a partner and advocate for parents. She supports her administration and is the first to assist everyone around her. 'Not my job' is not in her vocabulary. Ms. Spence makes sure each child is remembered, loved, and included. She has provided clothing, gifts, and meals for her students and their extended families," said the nominator.
"When her private school closed due to COVID-19, different schools immediately sought her after. She now taught children virtually across three different school divisions for grades K-8. She is now an integral part of her local high school. She provides a safe place for kids to receive additional one-on-one learning. Parents trust her. Kids adore her. Administration relies on her expertise and knowledge. Student teachers want to shadow and learn from her. She has provided before and after-school programs and summer programming. She makes learning fun, and her students are always active, learning, and involved with giving back to the community," said the nominator.
"Ms. Spence also loves her community. She actively participates in government and civic groups to promote learning and advancement. She has raised two of her own children, who have excelled in their educational endeavors and careers. She is considered a 'mom' to all. Her high standards of learning, character, and morals are respected. She disciplines with love and believes in the hopes and dreams of each child, pushing them to give their best. She is a blessing to all who are lucky to know her. Students adore her, parents love and respect her, faculty appreciate her, and the administration is blessed by her dedication and abilities to teach all students while changing lives daily. She has continued to do this despite her own struggles with blood cancer and health issues over the last several years," said the nominator.
"She is a true LifeChanger! One of my children wants to add that Ms. Spence is one of the most loved teachers at BHS. She provides a safe place for all students to learn and talk about problems, and she helps them to come up with a solution. Ms. Spence not only helped my child pass their classes but also provided the emotional guidance and help they needed to make sound choices and gave advice in every area of their life. She treats every student as if they are the most important person to her, but she holds them to high standards. Ms. Spence helps them with classes but teaches at their own individual levels. She builds her students up daily, and most kids love to see her daily to check-in. They love it when Ms. Spence can sub in their rooms (when available) or proctor testing. She also gives tough love, and the students hate it when they have disappointed her, but she always treats it as a life lesson and makes sure that they learn from it. Ms. Spence makes each student feel loved and secure and makes them feel they can conquer the world. She is there, whether it's through tough love or a shoulder to cry on. Ms. Spence has helped her students in any subject they go to her for and has helped many with extra tutoring or teaching in small groups. She attends sporting events and extra-curricular school activities...you never know when she will show up. Ms. Spence is there for students 24/7. She always has a smile, a kind word, and a loving spirit and heart for everyone," said the nominator.
"She's been teaching forever, and I've had older family members who have had her as a teacher. She is one of the teachers you will remember for a lifetime, and she will remember you. My cousin had her as a kindergarten teacher, and he sent her letters in college and invited her when he graduated with his Master's Degree. She is the one teacher that you remember. When you think of a LifeChanger, you think of her," said the nominator.
As a substitute teacher, I have worked with Dusty for many years. When I cover one of her classes, the students ask where she is and seem sad that she is not there. I have also worked with her as an AP Proctor. Dusty was in charge of this huge endeavor. She worked long hours and weekends to make sure it ran smoothly and always had a smile on her face. She is kind and patient and well deserving of this reward!
My encounter with Dusty is not from a student perspective, but seeing the "background" teacher. The "after-school" persona. Needing to drop something off after her classes, I dropped by her classroom. There, I found though the school day was over, her day was far from over. Students from different schools were dropped off, for "after school" care.
The students there, in that informal setting, were clearly in love and at ease with her. But very mindful when she meant business.
Her classroom decorated in such a way that was beautiful, fun yet educational at the same time.
Her constant comments about her students, and planned EXTRAS for her classes, shows her sheer DELIGHT in her students, and love for teaching---no matter what the grade. Even amid health problems, she still keeps her sense of humor; just a great human being.
I can think of no one more deserving of an award for her dedication to, not just the profession, but to a higher calling.
I've known Dusty for many many years and seeing her grow in to such an amazing teacher and leader in her field is not only heart warming but it encourages me that such an outstanding individual is grooming our youth for tomorrow.
She is a stand out amping her peers and should be awarded as such.
She is a great friend and knows no stranger. Even with her health issues, she is always the first to show up, and the hardest worker. Unless she discusses is, the smile on her face would never show how much she struggles with her own journey. She uplifts everyone, and doesn't accept or use excuses. The job always gets done, and everyone feels better when she is around. She is a terrific candidate for this award. She is an amazing educator, and the most dedicated person you will ever find!
She is an amazing teacher and just a great person in general. She is the person that you want on your side in any circumstance. She is tough as nails, but the most kind person with the biggest heart you will ever meet. Wonderful selection for this award.
I struggled so bad my freshman year. I was assigned to Ms. Spence. I fought working with her at first, but I was no match for her. A room full of kids that didn't want to learn or work with her, and she got us all back on track. My grades went from failing to Bs and As. But she also changed my attitude. I was able to work better with my other teachers, and made friends. She helped us all learn how to communicate with words, body language, and how to communicate better with teachers. Without her, I would have failed classes and would not have been able to turn my high school life around. She did the exact same thing with my cousin years earlier. I wished I hadn't fought her for weeks, I could have done even better. She still checks on me and helps me stay on track.
I had the pleasure of meeting her during her senior year in college, and later working with her immediately following at Radford University. In addition in earning and national Conference and Events Professional of the year, she coordinated thousands of events and conferences held at our university. She was always professional, and loved by everyone. She supervised staff, taught classes, and not only was responsible for implementing the details for groups, but she also created conferences, etc. All the million details she put together to make every experience for groups/individuals seamless. Fast forward 30 years and she is instrumental in our Alumni events. She serves on our team for scholarships, advancement, and outside promotional efforts. Our children also attended this university and she was known as the "team mom" (both our kids played different sports), but she always attended games and was available to welcome guests to our campus. She serves her alma mater proudly, and she is involved in all alumni functions. We are proud that she represents our school. Although we were sad to see her serve full-time as an educator, we all know that is where she belongs. This is a calling, and she has answered that call. Congrats on a wonderful acknowledgement!
So happy for you! I'm so glad you were nominated and definitely should win this award. Friends since gradeschool, but I've seen her do outstanding work at church, during sporting events, etc. Our kids grew up together and she is a great mom. My kids did not have her in school as a teacher, but she did help them when needed and it's obvious she is a great teacher. I'm so happy she was nominated and I really hope she wins...she has the community backing her!
I have been friends with Dusty since high school. I've seen her perform on every level...from school throughout her professional career. She meets every obstacle and new challenge with energy like no other. She is a wonderful mother, an outstanding teacher, and a wonderful friend. She never meets a stranger, and once you meet you, you have a life-long friend. I'm so excited to see her win this award.
When the schools had shut down and all the kids were in virtual learning mode, our Youth Center came up with an amazing idea of a student daycamp. Dusty was pivotal in instrumenting the approval needed for students to come and learn on site. We had students from three different districts, grades k-8 that used this resource. The students would come and virtual learn by grade within their own districts/schools/teachers online. Dusty would implement and work with all individual teachers, reteach as necessary, verify all work was completed and be the "onsite teacher". In addition, she ran the summer program. She trained staff, worked with social services to make sure all codes and policies were met since it was opened as "daycamp". She addressed needs by parents, community members, and made sure the children were following protocols during this time. It took a someone very knowledgeable about daycare settings, school settings, online protocols for 3 different school divisions. This person had to be certified also in first aid, CPR, and medication distribution. She handled students with special learning needs, behavioral issues, and all things that teachers and administrators deal with daily. Her role was as diverse as anyone could imagine and she made a huge difference in the learning for the children and helping the parents. She was amazing to work with and I learned so much from her. The staff was so well trained and we knew she had the program under control. She was definately a LifeChanger.
I knew her from the private school and my kids were so excited when they "graduated" to her classes. All the younger kids couldn't wait to have her as a teacher because her classes were always doing something fun, and they seemed so happy and calm. She never "pushed" grades, only learning. Because of her methods and teaching style, the kids always made good grades and she taught them even more important skills (study skills, organization, life skills, etc.) and she did this in a caring and loving way. They were devastated when the school closed. They lost her as a teacher, but not as a mentor and a "forever friend".
What a great award for an amazing lady. Way to go! We are so proud of you.
I have had the pleasure of working with Dusty on different projects within our community for several years. She is always creative, energetic, and eager to assist when she is called upon to help. She is a leader but leads from behind the scenes, giving credit to everyone around her. She is loved in our community and no one better deserves this award.
Dusty was an integral part of our private school (with a larger attached daycare). She began as kindergarten teacher, and over the course of 18 years had taught every subject in every grade level. When our school and daycare closed in 2020, she left as Vice Principal and High School online coordinator. She was also teaching all subjects for all the middle school students (less than 30 students, but each grade level had 6 courses). She was also serving as the emergency response lead and was second in charge for the Daycare facility when needed. She was a leader for over 30 staff and over 140 kids in both facilities. She created curriculum for the Virginia State Studies for the school. She oversaw state testing for the school and was the coordinator for our summer program for school aged kids. She was the best educator, and mentor for all of our teachers. She fed the minds and spirit of all of our children, and kept the school running smoothly. She did not tolerate out of line behavior and was the perfect person communicating to our parents. She created amazing and fun educational opportunities and activities for the children and special occasions were always celebrated. When our school closed due to the pandemic, we were devastated to lose such an amazing person. She will always be family to us.
Without Ms. Spence, I wouldn't have pursued my career in broadcast journalism. She pushed me to see my abilities and what I could accomplish if I set goals and didn't listen to others that told me college was not for me. I will be forever in her debt. Thank you!
I first met Dusty when I had her son in my kindergarten class. She is just a person that all her kid's teachers remember. She is an educator at heart, but she truly loves children. She connects so well with other teachers and parents alike. She was very active as a PTO mom for all the years her own children were in school. She was a huge help, and was able to communicate with parents and teachers when mediation was sometimes needed. Her ability to make you see someone elses point of view and to be empathic was amazing. The kids loved her and I can see why she is such an amazing teacher. Congrats on the award!
Ms Spence is just awesome! I love when I'm able to meet with her during school. She helps me put things into perspective and keeps me organized. She always compliments what I'm doing right, helps me with what I need to improve on, and is just a nice and safe space to be during the day when life gets to be too much. We love her!
I've known Dusty for many years as part of high school athletics. Both of her children were very involved in athletics (and both later graduated college in sports related/educational fields). She was a wonderful team mom, but she also was important to our staff. Whether it was coordinating the concession stands, selling tickets, assisting in all aspects of running a high school athletic program, she did it. She did this for many years before her children were in high school, and even after they graduated as she trained new staff. She was amazing and everyone loved her - especially all the kids!
I was lucky to have Ms. Spence as my child's teacher (and many other children in my family). She was an amazing teacher and such an inspiration to her students. My child exceled with her as a teacher and actually learned (not memorizing for a test). She taught the students, not just the lesson. Kids loved all the fun activities and special things she did for them. She made sure her kids felt a part of a class family and they took pride and ownership of their learning.
I've known her since she was in high school where I was a teacher. She was always a great student and it was no surprise that she landed in the education field. I've also known her outside the educational community in business settings and she has always had a high work ethic, honest, and a very hard worker. She is definitely someone you want on a team to succeed. I'm proud she was nominated for this award.
I've known her for decades and no one better to represent teachers or the education system than her. She is amazing and has endless amount of energy.
She is a great teacher and she is well respected by her friends, family, and students. She would be a wonderful choice for this award.
I've had the pleasure of calling this wonderful lady a friend for over 40 years. From school age buddies, raising children together, and now as educational peers. We work at different schools, but I see the amount of work and love she puts in her career every day. She is consistent, determined, and her work ethic surpasses anyone else. She is the teacher you want for child, the protector for your child, and the discliplinarian if one is needed. She is no-nonsense yet professional and loving. She is a LifeChanger!
Ms. Spence is the strongest advocate for her students. She holds kids to high standards, but she will also fight for all the kids to make sure they are heard, respected, and treated fairly. She deserves to be recognized for all she does.
She is the best teacher ever! She is wonderful at math and showing different ways to solve problems and the "why" behind "why we do it a certain way". She takes learning to a different level, and I wouldn't have passed, much less have gotten A's without her. Her method of teaching reaches every student in her room. No one fails with her.
I have been fortunate enough to have her as a teacher and I have worked for her as an intern. She has high expectations for students and her staff. It is amazing to see both sides of the equation. As a student, she runs a tight ship, but a smooth sailing ship. Students do not see all the behind the scenes work she puts into the day to make the class fun and a great learning environment. As students, you just see a teacher that loves her job and makes learning fun. As a staff person, it was mind-blowing to see all the prep work she puts in behind the scenes, and all the work she puts into individualizing instruction. Outside the classroom, she gives her staff mentoring, tools, and a wide array of helpful hints to make our jobs easier. She is a leader, not a boss. She was a fantastic teacher, and a wonderful person to work under. I have learned so much from her.
I first met Dusty at church. She was always very active in all areas. I later taught both her son and daughter in public school and was very active in her children's sporting events in the public school. As an educator, she has the respect from her peers and does a wonderful job (and she has been doing this for over 35 years). As a mom, she has my respect and admiration..she is one of the best moms! We are not recognized enough in this field, but she deserves every honor possible and definitely deserves this award!
She really is an amazing educator for our kids. My son was lucky enough to have her as a teacher and she took him from F and D's to A's and B's. In addition, she managed to adjust attitudes and directions with him that I could not. After the first year, he was no longer a behavior problem and became respectful and a good student.
She is known and loved by all her students...she has been my entire life. I'm lucky enough not to call her Ms. Spence, but "Mom". Although she pours her heart and soul into her students, she gives even more to her family. She is always the "present" parent. Growing up, what we considered "normal", we know now was not the "norm". She was always present to volunteer at school, show up for every school activity, sporting event, college event, collegiate athletics, parent volunteer and coordinator while we attended college(s). She was always present, helping and pushing us to become the very best we could be. She instilled in us a strong faith, made sure we were on the right path (but never pushing our destination). She was always the mom that helped us with our assignments, assisted us when we didn't understand, taught us what we didn't know. She always has high standards and holds you to the fire. Her skills are as diverse as the activities she is involved in. She is a great cook, baker, and can craft or fix anything she envisions. Her home is pure "love" and peaceful. She always has what is needed on hand, and can substitute and make everything right in the world. We thought it was normal growing up to have a home cooked meal every night, special treats daily, a mom that spent daily time helping and taking care of you. It wasn't until years later that we realized just how lucky we are to have such a wonderful mom. She led both children into a career in sports/education and she is the best mentor anyone could ask for. So much was learned from her, and so much more needs to be learned from her. We are blessed to call her "mom", and as amazing of an educator she is, that is nothing compared to the Lifechanger she is to her family.
As the director of a private school, we have worked with Ms. Spence for several years. Although she worked at another private school, she was instrumental in her knowledge of curriculum, and how to initiate a new private school in our area. She was not a part of our staff (not by our choice...we wanted her desperately), but her knowledge was unbelievable in every area as we initiated the steps in creating a new school in our area. From curriculum, staffing, state regulations, student needs, etc. we used her handbooks, curriculum handbooks, etc. She remains my go-to person for issues or questions because she understands the administrative, teaching, parent, and student needs for every aspect for a private school setting. She also understands the public school arena and how the two different schools can best serve children. She is a true professional with an abundance of knowledge and wisdom. I wish her the best and I hope she wins this award.
What a great person Dusty is. I've worked with her on numerous community events and higher education committees. She always is prepared and brings the best ideas to the table. She is a true leader, and involves everyone in activities and decisions. She is the first to take responsibility and the last to take credit for any endeavor. She is a great asset and can bring donations and fundraising campaigns to an amazing level. It seems everyone in our area knows her, and she has the ability to bring the right people together to make anything happen. I've been fortunate enough to work with her on many diverse events, and she always come through!
Dusty works so very hard in (and out of) school. She is always involved in some activity and is always helping others. I'm glad she is finally getting recognized for her hard work. I don't think she considers it "work" because she is always happy and smiling. You can tell she loves what she does and what she gives, she gives in love. The kids can tell who is in school for a job, and who is there to make a difference. She definitely makes a difference!
I know Dusty from church and she has always been very active in all aspects from youth leadership, Sunday School teacher, Administrative Roles, choir, etc. I've seen her come up with amazing and fun activities, so I can only imagine how her creative energies are spent in the classroom. Kids gravitate toward her. She is always encouraging, consistent in her expectations, and always follows through. She is a rare gem.
She has helped me and my kids over the years. Due to moving, my kids have her as a teacher (or a fixture in the building) in 3 different schools. The motivation and teaching style that she uses is unique, but works. She makes sure the content and skills are actually learned by each student. She teaches the child, not "to the child" and will use a multitude of methods until the lesson is learned. She never made the kids feel like they were behind the others, or made them feel bad in any way. She would incorporate math lessons into a fun cooking class for fractions, in English, she would use theatrical skills to assist in the learning. By utilizing study sheets from day one, the students are focused on learning material and not memorizing to the test.
It's about time she is recognized for all her dedication and hard work. She is the best teacher, life coach, and friend ever. She is the "go to" for so many. She is wonderful and we are blessed to know her!
I grew up with Dusty. Even in school, she was always a leader. I remember her being a student aid in middle and high school, and she would help us better than the teacher. It wasn't surprising that she chose teaching. She is a natural. She is an amazing friend and person and I really hope she wins. No one is more determined or focused in her career (or life).
She was an amazing teacher to my kids. She taught multiple grade levels (and every subject in each grade). She was not only the best teacher they ever had but she taught life skills (study habits, financial tools, etiquette, etc), that as a single dad, I couldn't do at home. Without her, my kids wouldn't have succeeded. She is just amazing!
I love Ms. Spence. She is so nice and will help you with your work. If I'm upset, or need advise, I go to her. She really listens and tells you what you need to hear. She won't just agree with you, or say things to get you out of her room. Actually, you may not like what she says at the time....but you know she is right. She will stay with you to make you work through whatever you are going through. I've seen her help so many kids with classwork and just life in general. She just is wonderful.
I wouldn't have graduated college without her. It was her mentoring, tutoring, and general support that allowed me to graduate. I lived away from home, and it was her that was my stand in "mom". She not only helped me in classes, but the life lessons and wisdom I gained from her will be with me always. She was my LifeChanger and I will always love her!
I concur with every comment made. She is just the person you want on your side in life, and on your side. You want her fighting for you, not against you (because she'd win every time). I've never met anyone so determined (yes, stubborn), so faithful in spirit, or so resilient. She is always thinking two steps ahead, if Plan "A" doesn't work....she already has it planned out up to letter "Z". She never gives up nor never gives in. She is tough, and loves with all she has. If you are too weak to battle, she is there. No better advocate for these kids!
I've known Dusty since our kids played sports together. I've attended games with her for over 20 years from recreation league (when the kids were five) up to and beyong our kids collegiate years. She is loved by all who know her and I've seen her help and tutor kids during games, just because she was there and was asked to help. She is a wonderful woman that would do anything to help anyone. She has a heart of gold and a smile that lights up a room. You can't be sad around her. You see what a fighter she is with her own health issues and how she never stops going and trying. She makes you want to be a better person. The kids want to make her happy and they want to earn her respect. Kids typically have no behavior issues around her, and that is a special quality hard to come by in education today.
I've known Dusty since high school and she is the most bubbly and lovable person. She is a great educator, but more that that, she really loves kids and education. She is like the "work mom", "school mom", and "teacher mom" all in one person. She moved mountains to help you succeed but will also hold you firm to expectations and will provide meaningful consequences as needed. The students are left feeling empowered by her with tools on how to handle themselves and situations better next time. She is always saying, "There are no bad kids, just good kids that don't know the good decision, so we must teach them." I've also heard her say, "Not every child learns the same way, so it is our job to find the way they learn and teach to that." Kids that have been taught by her love her.
Dusty has been a dear friend for 50 years. We have been friends since kindergarten, and even then, you could tell she would be a teacher. Her leadership qualities and ability to navigate a room that involves people of different genres, educational abilities, and behavioral issues is amazing. She is able to keep everyone on task and productive. She quickly tackles any issue and commands respect, but in a loving way. I've been blessed to be her friend and can think of noone more suitable for this award.
Dusty is a wonderful friend and wonderful educator. She brings all the qualities of the person you want to teach your kids. Whether it's church, education, or community involvement, she remains the constant mentor for our kids. She is the exact same person regardless of the situation you see her in, and the kids love and respect her.
I love Mrs. Spence, she has helped me through so much and helped me with my grades she makes sure all her Kids that walk into the Iss room and stay and she helps them with whatever school work they need help with. Mrs. Spence isn't just the iss teacher she an amazing person and teacher. She Has a heart of gold she checks up on me to see if I'm okay she is one of my supporters. She deserves this award because there are so many people who love her she is one of the most lovable teachers ever and I'm glad shes a teacher here. I love Mrs. Spence.
Dusty was my boss many, many years ago. She was in college but working full time. She was wonderful to work for. Fast forward 25 years and we are both in education. I again worked very close with her while her children attended high school and she was working at a different school. She worked with the high school so much, it was as if she was on staff. She was always organized and had all paperwork for concessions, sports, and athletic events completed on time, and correct. She was the person we would call if anything was needed. We need 100 pizza's for an event, she took care of it. We needed someone to go get $500 of candy and hour away, she made it happen. Any concession, planning, or event....she was handling, or was called to "fix" an emergency. I would highly nominate her for this award! I'm blessed to call her my friend.
I first met Ms. Spence when her son entered college and I was Asst. Athletic Director. I was a mentor for her son, and he later worked for me. He received a full scholarship for athletics and academics. We developed a wonderful relationship and her ability to command a room of offensive linemen was impressive. The team loved her and she was known as "the cookie mom". She always brought food for the team. She was also the parent contact for feeding the team for both home and away games (which was a tremendous task in coordinating from offsite and a state away). She was a tremendous part of the team. The boys loved and respected her and she raised a fine young man that was respectful and has high work ethic. I'm sure these same traits were seen in the classroom and with others. I would highly recommend her for this award.
I have known Dusty for years. Our children grew up together and we were both very active in school, athletics, and rec sports. She is one of the best mom's I know. She was always active in their school - volunteering, homeroom mom, PTA leader, and she even taught the DARE program for several years. During the younger years, she volunteered as coach for sports, and always made the kids feel like winners. As our kids aged, she ran the concessions for the high school, was the sports mom that donated her time and money for the kids. She was always there - every game, every concert, every event. But, she was also the teacher that all the kids ran up to. She always had a crowd of kids with her. After high school, our kids went to different colleges, grew up and moved away, started families of their own. But when I see her, kids still come toward her out in the stores. She is just a great person, and is so deserving of this award.
I am a substitute teacher at several schools in the Montgomery County Virginia School system. Although I have interacted with Ms. Spence for a few years, I had the pleasure of working directly with her this past spring when she was the coordinator of Advanced Placement testing at Blacksburg High School and I was a proctor for the tests. I was so impressed at the professionalism and personal involvement shown by Ms. Spence both before and during the administration of the tests.
I have been a proctor for a few school districts in two different states and I know this is not an easy job to take on. Ms. Spence even asked me for input about issues I may have had proctoring the test in the past. She was great at keeping in touch with the proctors and never did I feel that I was on my own. She was very personal with the students and really worked with them on their schedule. Whenever there was a problem, she immediately handled it and resolved the issue. She worked till late at night making sure all the tests were ready for the next day and all i's were dotted and t's were crossed. In other words, she made sure the process was handled correctly and neither the students or the proctors felt like they were not listened to.
As a retired probation officer, I have seen people make poor choices and not make the right decision. I feel that Ms. Spence's dedication to her position did change the life of many students and maybe helped them achieve a higher score because she was there for them. I would highly recommend her for this award.
I first met Dusty when I was homeless, going thru a court custody battle, and probably at my lowest in life. She reached out, and helped me in so many ways. She found resources for me, gave me a "hand up" to get my life back on track to be the best mom possible. I was homeschooling 3 boys and she took over the teaching for me for 3 months during her "spare time" so I could get back to where I needed to be. The boys thrived under her teaching and she got them (and me) back on track. That was 15 years ago. She remains my friend to this day and the boys (grew into fine men) and still love her. She is the best!
Although I'm partial, she is the winner of this award. She was literally "born" in teacher-mode. Even as a child, she was a leader, a teacher, and commanded a room. She grew up with a vibrant, bubbly personality. Whether its church, school, volunteering, or athletic events, you see "it". You can't fake it, or manipulate it. Kids love her, they listen to her. She has become one of the best teachers around, and she is always in nuturing mode - it's her personality. She would do anything to help students, parents, and coworkers (sometimes beyond her capabilities). Even now, when she is fighting life-altering health battles, unless she tells you...you have no idea. She is definitely most deserving of this award.
I first met Dusty when she worked at a private school and I attended a function. It was obvious the kids respected and adored her. She stood out as a leader and the parents loved her. Fast forward a few years and we became really good friends. Over the years, I've come to her for advice for my own children and later she convinced me that teaching was a calling and I needed to pursue this. Without her guidance and support, my life would be very different. I know she is my LifeChanger!
She is the absolute best teacher! Students listen and connect with her. She explains the work in our terminology and can tell if we are lost. She never embarrasses us and is always there to help. She always smiles and turns out day around if we are struggling or having a bad day. She will hold you accountable but never makes you feel bad, just makes you want to do better. She remembers small details about each of us and follows up with us. She really is one in a million!
She really helps every student she can. She treats us as real people and listens. She teaches how to be kind, use our manners, and how to see things from others perspective. She helps to break down problems so they are solved. She's my pick for a LifeChanger!
Ms. Spence had not only changed the way I see things in my life, but she also gives me advice as well. She as always been there to help me. She is seen as a mom, a teacher, a helper. Overall, she is just an amazing person. She can tell just by looking at us what kind of day we are having, if we need to talk, or if we are not being truthful and trying to pull a fast one (and she will set us straight). She makes you believe that you can get the grades, earn the respect, and be a better person. She changes your life around, and you don't even realize what she is doing until the changes start happening. At the end of the day, she will welcome anyone in her arms.
I highly recommend Ms Spence for the LifeChanger of the Year award. I meet and talk with her regularly and she is my favorite teacher. She treats all kids like a real person (with feelings and opinions that matter). She helps me by teaching in different ways if I'm not getting the "canned and only way" most teachers teach. You don't even realize you are learning with her, until the lightbulb moment happens. She shows what a truly kid person looks like. I do, and always will, respect her. She has helped me in, and out, of the classroom. She is the best choice for this award.
She is so passionate about her job and the kids. Her organizational skills and attention to detail makes her classroom a place where learning can occur. Her job is tough but she is perfect for it. Her students know exactly what the expectations are and she holds them accountable. She is very respected by students and everyone at the school.
Dusty is a colleague that I know I can trust and depend at all times. She is reliable and consistently comes through whenever needed. Dusty always goes the extra mile to help her students and co-workers.
She is amazing to work with and is a wonderful mentor to the new teachers. She helps students and teachers alike. We are so lucky to have her on our team.
Dusty is fantastic with our kids. She has a wonderful relationship with the students and the staff. She is a go-to for so many people!
Everyday at BHS, Ms. Spence works with students who need continuous reminders or promoting. She organizes and monitors their work loads in a manner that has increased the amount of work that other teachers are receiving back. It's no longer a matter of missing assignments when assigned to ISS. She teaches material, but she makes sure the kids are understanding and returning the work when they are with her. Her experience and ability to nudge students forward has made a huge difference to the students who utilize the space and time she gives. Honestly, ISS is a meaningful and life lesson timeout from the classroom.
Ms Spence Has always been an Amazing Teacher! She's there 24/7 for anyone, shes always been able to calm people down when they are in a stressed state. This past year Ms Spence has helped me a lot with my Mental Health She has always been determined to help her kids and she sets high expectipns for our achievments. I am really blessed to have Someone to talk to this year, She has always been Kind, Patient and carring and Im blessed to have her!!
Ms. Spence is a wonderful support for our students. In her role as ISS coordinator, she often encounters students who are struggling academically or socially. She's able to reach those students where they are and provide whatever it is they need. While ISS can have a negative connotation, many students will go see her on their own just to say hello or have someone to talk to. Ms. Spence gets the best out of her students.
I've worked with Dusty at two different schools (both private and public). She was my mentor as a new teacher, as well as the lead teacher and administrator at a private school. She was also mentored me as a first year teacher in a public school. I was also blessed as she was a teacher for my own children for many years. She is productive, determined, and experienced. She makes learning fun for the kids but she has high expectations - and helps them achieve them. Her knowledge base across the teaching spectrum and as an administrator is amazing. I've been blessed to have learned from her and she is very deserving of this award.
Dusty is patient and kind and works so well with students who are having a hard time. She is nurturing and is so deserving of this award!
I can honestly say with utmost confidence that Dusty is easy going, friendly, and professional. She is a kind and caring individual that is always willing to help students and staff. You would never know her struggles by her upbeat and pleasant personality. She has a very challenging position but she approaches it every day with a smile and positive attitude. She is a joy to be around and would be most deserving of the Lifechanger Award - she changes lives every day!
Mrs Spence is a great teacher. she treats everyone with respect, and we respect her back. she is great at teaching and is great at her job.
Ms. Spence is a highly intelligent and applied women always reaching for her highest potential, she has always proven to be a good teacher as well as very stern with discipline, she has since the first conversation I had with her held my respect as she has always been forward and honest with me, as well as the others I have seen her conversing with. Something most teachers nowadays neglect to be is empathetic towards those around their class, with Ms. Spence respect means respect it's not something just taken into consideration or left as an afterthought, even when she feels bad and doesn't want to be here she still comes in and toughs it out. A woman such a as Ms. Spence is rare in the world today she is enduring, inspiring, she is logical and kind hearted she is a wonderful person to converse with and I am glad to see her hard work being recognized!!
Sincerely John R,L, Price.
She has excellent rapport with the students. She seeks to help them succeed academically. But, she also imparts wisdom in helping guide them to be successful in life after high school. I hope she wins this award because she is a great asset to every school that is blessed to have her.
Dusty has consistently demonstrated outstanding dedication to helping students succeed. She always takes the time to help students reach their potential. Her wiliness to take on additional responsibilities and go above and beyond exemplifies the value of her commitment. Dusty has fostered a collaborative, motivated environment for students. She has demonstrated excellence and a strong commitment to educating students. I wholeheartedly believe Dusty is the perfect candidate for the LifeChanger Award.
Ms. Spence is honestly one of the best teachers I mean even tho she is our ISS teacher she is really good at teaching and can explain stuff better then the other teacher. Every time Im in here she is so nice and welcoming, she tells stories about her son and daughter and all of her family. she is someone I can go to and tell her something and I know she will keep that. She is so loving and so trustworthy.
I have the pleasure of working with Dusty Spence. Upon accepting the position of AP Coordinator, Ms. Spence was warm and welcoming. Ms. Spence was the previous AP Coordinator. She shared all of her materials with me to help me transition in a smooth manner. She has done nothing but offered her assistance and expertise. I am truly grateful for her assistance and professionalism.
She has excellent rapport with the students. She seeks to help them succeed academically. But, she also imparts wisdom in helping guide them to be successful in life after high school. I hope she wins this award because she is a great asset to every school that is blessed to have her.
Over the last several years, I've seen her tackle and conquer obstacles that would have killed a normal person. From surviving a near death experience, and dealing with continued health issues, she always arrives with a smile. She is always working, or participating in commitments outside of work. She is a natural leader, and is always there to support others. She leads by example, and will always do the hardest work herself. She always others to shine. You would never know with her energy that she struggles behind that smile. I've seen her adjust to the educational environment from a private school, to online environments, and in public school. Her ability to adjust to circumstances far beyond her control, and to be exactly what the students need, is her gift. Her dedication and love the kids have for her is her driving force. She is a wonderful mom, a great friend, and is active in so many community endeavors as well as church. I've seen her go above and beyond what a normal teacher would do many times. If something is needed, she would come up with a plan to make it happen. She is an amazing woman who has dedicated years with a smile on her face and love in her hears. She is most deserving of this award.
Ms. Spence is one of the greatest iss coordinators ever. I came into bhs with low morale my freshman year and my head was in a bad space the i got caught skipping and went to iss for the first time i thought i would hate it but little did i know i would meet one of the greatest people in the entire school and build one of the most valuable relationships i have during my highschool years.
I haven't been a student with Ms. Spence for several years, but she still stays in touch with me. She is an amazing person. She helped me tremendously as I struggled in high school with home and school life. She takes care of every problem that comes her way calmly and efficiently. She cares and loves her students as her own. She always brightens up the room with her smile...her love shines through. She will drop whatever she is doing to help students and make sure they are on the right track and be successful in life. She loves kids and helps them academically, but more so ... physically and emotionally. She checks on them during and after school if needed and tutors before and after school, even during her own lunch. If she sees someone mad or upset, she intervenes to help them calm down and find peace with their situation. She deserves this award and we need to show her how much we love her.
Ms. Spence has taught all 4 of my children over the course of a decade. If I had the money, I would personally pay her to be my children's personal teacher for the remainder of their years, including college. She is that amazing and truly unforgettable! No one else will ever compare to her in any way...as a teacher or a person. She has become a very close friend over the years, and a close confidant. She gives the most sound advice in the most loving ways, even if you don't want to hear it-you will agree with it. She is someone I strive to become more like, as a parent and a person. I love her with everything in and pray for her health, wealth, and safety on a daily basis. She is my LifeChanger and a winner to all that love her. Phenomenal doesn't even begin to cover her!
Dusty has always been a caring and loving example to her students. I know of her "school" persona, which speaks for itself. Beyond that, her involvement in community is also something to acknowledge. She has served on the City Commission on Youth, she has been beyond active in rec league sports, Community Youth Center, and active in all aspects of church activities for kids (from teaching Sunday School and beyond). She constantly strives to show students how to be the best they can be, and how to handle struggles during challenging times. She loves her job, and it shows to her students and coworkers alike. This is not something that can be faked, this is a calling!
I have known and worked with Dusty for over 30 years. She is one of the kindest people I've known. I've worked with her and have seen the difference she makes daily. She is calm, organized, fair, and will respond to any situation. I've seen her help kids physically hurt, in mental distress, and in need of love. She always steps up. I've seen her respond in public to total strangers (she even gave CPR in a restaurant to a stranger having a medical issue). She is one in a million and we are lucky to have her in our lives. BHS is blessed!
Dusty is one of the kindest people I've ever met. She is an amazing teacher, but more...she guides students, and helps them prepare to be a better person. She doesn't just set them up to fail, she is there to make sure they succeed. She is an advocate for her students, and partner to the parents, and a wonderful assett to her school. She is a support system to everyone. No other is more deserving to win this award than Dusty!
Ms. Spence goes above and beyond for all the students and expects the best of them. She is an amazing educator and person, who in the face of a challenging situation, finds the solution that is best for the individual student and implements it immediately. She is absolutely amazing to work with, and I'm luck to have her as a friend.
She is an amazing teacher and person. My girls loved her as a teacher and I loved my kids having her. I knew my kids were safe and she had everything under control, and would keep them on point with no slacking grades. She is a very kind and thoughtful person. She is very loved....she never meets a stranger!
Ms. Spence was the best teacher my child has had. She takes her time for both students and parents. As a single parent, it is hard to stay on track and be 100% of everything for our kids. She helps everyone stay on track - her organizational skills can't be touched. Whether it was homework, behavior, or just a "venting" session, she was my guide for many years. Even though my child aged out of her care, she is still there, still communicates and checks on us, and helps when needed. She will always be a fixture in our family. Once she teaches your child, is a teacher for life. She instills everything good in our kids, gives everyone hope, and we are blessed. She must win this award!
ms Spence is a good teacher she's nice to her students she keeps people on track without gitting mad and she helps her students out in any way she can
Ms. Spence is a compassionate and dedicated ISS teacher who always goes above and beyond to support her students. She creates a calm and structured environment that helps students reflect on their actions and learn from their mistakes. With her patience and understanding, Ms. Spence encourages positive behavior while fostering personal growth. Her fair and consistent approach makes her a respected figure in the school community.
Dusty is an amazing person and is fantastic to work for. I've seen her handle so many situations, scenarios, and challenges with grace and leadership. The kids view her not only as a teacher, but a mentor. Parents look to her as a confidant, friend, and trusted guide. Co-workers look to her for her experience and how to maneuver in this ever-changing, and difficult job. Her unique style and abilities goes above and beyond what is asked. She brings it 100% everyday, with a smile and spirit that won't let anyone give up.
I've watched this woman for years pour her heart, sweat, and tears into these kids. I've seen her teach all day, go to after school activities, participate in search parties, sit by hospital beds. I've seen her counsel students and parents that were at their breaking points. She has been there to tutor and comfort in ways that only she can. She is tough love and has high expectations for everyone around her - yet she is gentle and does this in such a way that everyone wants to rise to the challenge to succeed and do better. She turns kids around that have been labeled by society. She makes them love learning. During the pandemic, I've seen her zoom from home, hold classes outside, and go into homes to teach. I've seen her hold children until they are calm. When no one else can break through, she does. A trip out to the store or dinner will eventually end with kids that have ran into her and time spent chatting with parents, or just community and church folks. Once a child is in her class, they are her kids forever. She does all this while being a wonderful mom to her own kids, active in the community and church, helping me with my own business, and always being there for others. She has done while being employed full-time and fighting health issues relating to chronic leukemia. This woman is the definition of "LifeChanger". She has been nominated for this award several times and it is now time we give her this award!
My daughter adores Ms. Spence. She goes the extra mile to provide fun, yet educational activities. She was always there to help in any way possible for her and me. Every school and summer program has been blessed under her leadership.
Dusty is a great teacher! She pushed my kids to work hard, learn the basics, and to use their own mind. They made wonderful grades with her as she made learning fun. She tutors, and makes sure the kids understand what is being taught. She not only teaches academics, but she goes above and beyond with citizenship, manners, etc. She teaches the entire spectrum and makes kids want to learn and do better.
Congrats Dusty! A well deserved honor..our youth need more teachers with your dedication. You have consistently done this for many, many years, and you only get better!
There is no one more deserving of this award than Dusty! Her dedication to our young people is unmatched-both inside and outside the classroom. She takes her love of the profession, and the her of love of the kids outside the classroom to the home of the families. In today's world, that is rare. Each child who has had the privilege to be taught, guided, and loved by Dusty are truly blessed.
In all my years in education, Dusty is one of the most dedicated teachers I've ever met. She goes above and beyond to give the students the best learning experience possible. She has suffered medical setbacks since the pandemic, which most would not have survived, much less continue working. Her concern has not been for herself, but for doing what she was called to do, and what is best for her students. She is not your 8am-3pm teacher. I have seen her collect items, raise money, and be there for her students and families. I've seen her tutor kids, spending her nights and weekends (working around the parent schedules). I've seen her at extracurricular activities...all of this above and beyond her own family over the years. Her energy is always high, and her smile and personality is contagious. She always finds the blessings around her, and you automatically become happy when around her.
Congrats Ms. Spence! You deserve this, and so much more. You are awesome at what you do. I appreciate all you have helped me and my kids with over the years. BHS is blessed to have you there. Keep up the great work!
Dusty is one of the greatest influences a student could have. As a young teacher, she guided and molded me to become the teacher I strive to be. She is a great role model for students and teachers alike. She's dedicated to the kids, the school, the parents, her coworkers, and friends and family. She has so much knowledge about teaching, behavior, needs, ..., the list goes on. She is blessing and I am blessed to have her as a mentor and friend.
I have known Dusty for many years (both professionally and personally) and I have always admired her passion that she has for teaching. She always goes above and beyond to make the sure the needs of the children are met in everyway - physically, academically, and spiritually. She is a safe space both at school and outside the classroom. She cares for the whole well being of the child. I have admired her ability to adapt to an ever changing world and classroom environment. There is a tireless energy about her that she builds in others. She is able to remain focused and dedicated to her students, even when there is chaos around. She has the ability to calm both the mind and spirit. In a world that sees many people give "just enough" and be the status quo, she never settles and never quits. Dusty goes above and beyond as a teacher, a mom, and as a leader in the church and community. She is worthy of recognition as a life changer. I believe this is because she gives selflessly and has a heart to the others benefit and grow. She will always be the positive light in any room.
I can think of no one more deserving of this award. She has been a life-long friend and she has always been a beacon of light and positivity. She offers love, learning, and friendship to everyone. Anyone that knows her, already knows she is a LifeChanger!
Dusty has devoted her professional life to children by teaching academics and modeling the way to care for others. She is well loved by her students because they know she loves them. Building relationships with children is critical to being able to help them learn and grow. Dusty continues to bring those skills to her job every single day. I am a teacher, and taught her children, served and volunteered in every capacity possible. Her own children modeled her behavior by both pursuing academic careers. She talks the talk and walks the walk.
Dusty is not only an amazing teacher, but a wonderful friend. She has overcome many obstacles over the last several years that most people would not have even survived. She faced these with grace, strength, and a spirit of being blessed (and sharing this blessing with others). Teaching, and being there for all those around her is a priority, regardless of her own storms in life. She is very dedicated and puts her soul into all she does. She is a wonderful mother (her own children are the best adults and are the rubies in her crown). She is a spiritual anchor that you want to go to war with, not against. She gives and helps everyone. This award could not go to a better woman!
Ms. Spence dedicates so much of herself to ensuring the success of her students. During times of adversity is where she steps up and shines, showing more determination than ever. She always finds a way through an obstacle.. and she brings everyone with her (sometimes kicking and screaming). She performs the job of 20 people, with grace and knowledge. She should be celebrated, applauded. She is awesome and we love her!
Ms. Dusty has been "my person" for over a decade. We originally met when I was in a very dark time in my life. I was away from my family, and in college. She has been my rock, my second mom, my mentor, and my friend. She was just a miracle for me. She helped me not only graduate college, but trained me to be the best teacher I could be. She has trained and mentored so many teachers, co-workers, as well as all her students. She is creative, devoted, and the most passionate teacher I have ever met. She makes me want to be a better teacher every day. There is nothing can break her organization methods, her spirit, or her love for all students and just people in general. You can't be shy with you, she will make you talk, come out of your shell, and find your passion. She is well-rounded, bubbly, and nothing can stop her. I believe she should win this because SHE IS A LIFECHANGER. No one fits this better than Momma D!
She is called many endearing names by those that love her...daughter, mom, teacher, advocate, advisor, etc. All reflect just how deserving she is of this honor. She has always gone the extra mile to be sure her students are getting the education and the love they need to get them thru either the hour, day, or week at a time that they need. She feeds both the mind and spirit. She has faced so many health challenges of her own, and since the pandemic, and in spite of the stress and struggles, she has always went above and beyond for her kids. She is very determined to be there for them in every capacity needed. She is the calm in the storm and helps them overcome challenges. She is a very deserving candidate.
She is most deserving of this award. She's not only the best mom to her kids, but is a mom to all her students. She has overcame every obstacle and situation that has been thrown her way. She is strong willed, filled with love and always has a smile. She is tough, has high expectations, but is there to help you meet those expectations. She is very strong, determined, and give all the children what they need...day in and day out.
Dusty has made a huge impact on by my son, and myself. I have struggled as a single mom and she was walked me thru issues, made contacts for me, and gave me (or got me) the help I needed. She helped my son come out of his shell and thrive in a learning environment that builds his mind and spirit. He loved having her as a teacher. She has gone above and beyond for the students and the parents and we all want her to win this award.
