Music that Describes Christopher

Christopher Rice was nominated by his spouse, Heidi Rice.

"Hickory High School has many outstanding teachers, but I would like to nominate one near and dear to my heart because I know how much of himself he has given and continues to give. He is not only a colleague but my husband of 28 years—most of which we have spent teaching at the same school! Christopher has been making a difference for over two decades at Hickory High School and in Hickory City Schools. He is brilliant, organized, creative, caring, and insightful. He knows how to break down complex concepts and skills so that students can acquire them and build upon them until they reach a new level and feel proud of their accomplishments," said Heidi.

Mr. Rice has effectively reached students in all levels of English classes: College Prep, Honors, IB, and AP. Outside of class, he has led teams of students to win state writing championships and led students to create and publish school magazines. Mr. Rice sincerely cares for his students. He supports and encourages them, providing a safe classroom atmosphere and offering a listening ear when they struggle with life.

Mr. Rice is a recognized leader in the building and the district. He gladly assists his colleagues with issues and serves on committees that make essential school-wide and programmatic decisions. He served as English Department Chair for many years before becoming the media center coordinator, helped establish an IB program, and serves as an AP grader. Mr. Rice also teaches his peers when he offers technology assistance or outstanding professional development sessions. The ultimate team player, Mr. Rice is teaching two sections of AP this year and serving as the Instructional Technology Facilitator. With a welcoming attitude, he assists staff and students alike with technology and is excited about improving the literary side of the media center.

"Christopher shows up to work without fail, no matter how much he aches or how tired he is. He always goes above and beyond as a dependable team member and leader. I cannot tell you how many times former students have thanked him for preparing them so well for college or how many times former students have said that Chris was their favorite teacher or that his class was one of their favorites. I cannot tell you how many former students have said to him that they advanced in their careers thanks to the writing and analytical skills he taught them. I cannot tell you how many former students have said they went on to major or minor in English, kept taking English classes even as STEM majors, or became teachers thanks to Chris's inspiration and example. But I can tell you that he does deserve all the accolades. Chris Rice is a LifeChanger.

Congratulations on this awesome nomination! Mr. Rice is an outstanding teacher and human being. He is the one who will help a student find their way by any means necessary. When I think of a person who cares, has compassion and loves what they do... I think of Mr. Rice. When I would show up late, he wouldn't throw me out, but he held me accountable. That's the discipline he has for his students. When I couldn't write a paper, he would stay after school to go the extra mile and make sure I knew how write papers. That's the compassion he has for his students. When I lost my dad, lost in my first year of college and didn't have much.... Mr. Rice, his wife and daughter made sure I had everything I needed. That's the love he has for others. Not only is Mr. Rice a Life Changer of the year, but a Life Saver to me and so many others. Thank you for being a teacher, a mentor, a colleague, and most importantly a friend.

Not only is Chris Rice an amazing educator who has given his life’s work to serving the students of Hickory High School, he is also my beloved big brother. Just as he does with his students he has instilled within me a love of literature, writing, music, and the arts. He has a very special ability to help students (and his sister) open their minds to ponder and consider ideas in a way that they never have before. His patience and love for his students and what they do in class gives them confidence to try new things, to work through their problems without compromising their dignity and self-esteem. Always teaching but also always learning from everyone around him, he is a true Renaissance man and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.

I cannot agree more with Chris' nomination for this award! From having watched him arrive for Christmas "vacation" with the car's back seat filled with boxes of student essays to be carefully read and commented upon, to visiting in Hickory and running into former students who immediately began expressing their appreciation to him, I have had the joy of watching an uber-dedicated teacher in action. On a personal level, I have also admired his understanding of personal interactions and caring for individuals, his creativity, and his openness to new ways to make his subject matter interesting to his students. I also have admired the way he has gone beyond "job requirements" despite being in physical pain. Chris truly has been a LifeChanger for so many.
