Music that Describes Dixie

Dixie Somerfield was nominated by a colleague, Mariia Taylor.

Since Ms. Somerfield joined the school, breakfast and lunch participation in Thorne Bay School has increased a lot compared with previous years. In addition, since she has joined, the students and teachers are happy, and because students are happy, parents are happy! Anyone who comes into the school during breakfast or lunch can smell the delicious meals she cooks; students even say the food smells like being in a restaurant. The students are very excited to come to the cafeteria for meals thanks to Ms. Somerfield.

"This school year, Thorne Bay school students and staff were gifted with an amazing awesomesauce cook: Dee! What a wonderful gift! Blessing to all of us! We are very thankful for having Dee as a lead cook," said Taylor.

Dixie (Dee) has lived in the Thorne Bay area for many years, however she is new to the position of Lead Cook at the Thorne Bay School. Dee brings with her many years of culinary experience and has literally brought the school meal program in the Thorne Bay school back to life. She is passionate about serving fresh quality food to our students and staff and the students are truly excited about school meals once again. Dee is willing to go the extra mile, arriving early to assist with district staff meals on inservice days, as well as assisting with many school related events. In addition to her new position this year, she has also taken on the responsibility of training a young assistant cook. Together, they send the amazing smell of delicious meals wafting down the halls daily. Dee always has a smile on her face and greets each student, staff member and parent with enthusiasm throughout the day.

Dear Dixie, I just wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for all you do at Thorne Bay School. Your incredible dedication to making lunch something that students actually look forward to each day is truly appreciated. You bring such a bubbly personality to the cafeteria, making it a warm and welcoming place where students feel cared for beyond just their nutrition. The love and attention you put into every meal are so evident; it’s like having a grandma’s special touch in every bite. Your kindness and thoughtfulness extend far beyond the food, as you genuinely care for each of our students. Thank you for everything you do to nourish their bodies and lift their spirits daily. We’re so grateful to have you as an essential part of our school family. With sincere appreciation, Robbin Perkins Askew

Dee has been an amazing addition to our school. She is happy to be working with kids and ecstatic that the students are excited about the meals. We have went for many years with unhappy kids which in turn leads to unhappy parents. Cooks in the past didn't seem to understand the portions were different for the little kids to the big kids. Without changing the standard requirements, just using spices and paying attention to temperatures, Dee has made the food taste better. We are very lucky to have her here at our Thorne Bay site.
