Ezequiel Madrigal was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

"Teachers ignite change in other's lives. This influence starts in their classroom, echoes through their school, strengthens their community, and, for the truly exceptional, leaves an impact that travels across continents. It's with deep respect and admiration that I nominate my colleague, Ezequiel Madrigal, for the LifeChanger of the Year Award for his impact on his school, community, and beyond," said the colleague.

Mr. Madrigal is a remarkable force for good, embodying every quality of a true LifeChanger. If you were to meet Mr. Madrigal, you would immediately sense the warmth and commitment of someone profoundly invested in helping others thrive. His extraordinary gift for bringing out the best in everyone around him sets him apart. His unwavering belief in his students and dedication to their success make him a teacher and a true mentor and advocate for their potential.

"Being around Ezequiel reminds me of the incredible impact a teacher can have. His work with students and his love for teaching constantly push me to raise my standards and to lead with compassion and purpose. Ezequiel has not only changed the lives of his students but also inspired his colleagues, including me," said the colleague. "His example encourages me to show up for our students daily with the same passion and dedication, knowing that our teaching truly shapes lives."

Mr. Madrigal's commitment to others is evident as a Spanish language educator at Edmond North High School, where he opens doors of opportunity through the power of language and culture. In this role, he goes beyond teaching vocabulary; he creates a classroom space rich with encouragement and opportunity. Observing him at work, you would see a teacher who meets his students where they are, nurturing their unique strengths with patience and compassion. You would see him connect with each student at their level, patiently guiding them and celebrating their talents-smiling and asking them, "Verdad? Right?" if he senses confusion or hesitation from a student to speak.

As you walk into class, you will witness a moment where each student is greeted with a password he's taught them to reinforce their language skills. This simple practice speaks volumes as a tool that helps his students feel safe, supported, and ready to take risks, knowing they are always encouraged to grow and learn. His nurturing approach helps his students discover strengths they didn't think they had, building their confidence to endure beyond the classroom. His proven ability to make a positive difference is visible in his students' growth and the trust he builds with them.

Beyond the classroom, learning another language opens doors to new opportunities. Mr. Madrigal's approach to teaching empowers his students with a skill that offers unique career paths, giving them a competitive edge in an increasingly global job market. In addition, many scholarships and exchange programs prioritize or even require language skills, giving his students a chance to experience life in another country, gain new perspectives, and strengthen their independence. Mr. Madrigal doesn't just teach Spanish; he equips his students with tools to succeed in an interconnected world, offering them possibilities beyond the classroom walls.

As the Hispanic Student Association (HSA) advisor, Mr. Madrigal brings cultural pride into the wider community. If you attended a club meeting, you'd see his students exploring their heritage through shared experiences, whether making churros or enchiladas together, visiting local Hispanic-owned restaurants, or participating in community events celebrating Hispanic culture. These experiential learning moments broaden his students' perspectives and strengthen their identity and belonging, fostering a school culture where diversity is celebrated and appreciated. This cultural affirmation is transformative for students who may feel torn between different cultural identities. He enables his students to see their heritage as a source of strength, not something to conceal, giving them the confidence to embrace who they are proudly.

Mr. Madrigal's effectiveness as an educator doesn't stop with his students. His impact as a member of the Oklahoma Foreign Language Teacher Association reaches outside his school, bringing innovative, culturally rich teaching strategies to educators statewide. His leadership in language education strengthens professional excellence within his field, making him a mentor to fellow teachers and a role model in the power of culturally relevant teaching. This kind of leadership changes lives for his students and other educators who can draw from his ideas and translate his strategies into their own teaching.

His dedication to professional growth has earned him multiple accolades, including his recent nomination for the Oklahoma Medal of Excellence, which recognizes public school educators across the state for their passion and innovation, their commitment to professional development, and their extraordinary impact on student learning. Recently honored as Edmond North High School's Teacher of the Year, Mr. Madrigal was celebrated for his dedication to academic growth and his students' personal development. His drive to pursue his Master's in Administration is a testament to his commitment to educational leadership and his ambition to make an even more significant impact as a school leader in years to come.

Mr. Madrigal's moral and ethical commitment extends beyond his professional duties, which he demonstrates through his leadership in his church's youth group. His mentorship during life's formative years equips young people with resilience, integrity, and empathy. He provides more than guidance but a life-affirming influence that shapes young people in the Edmond community into compassionate leaders.

Mr. Madrigal's impact expands to his learning experiences, shaping how he connects with his students. Through a competitive Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad grant he was awarded last year, Mr. Madrigal traveled to Peru, immersing himself in the language and culture. If you were a student sitting in his class, you wouldn't just be learning Spanish—you'd learn about Peruvian culture through the very experiences Mr. Madrigal had himself. He brings lessons on remedios caseros (home remedies) and traditional recipes like ceviche, passed down from locals and host families he interacted with in Peru.

By immersing his students in global perspectives, he offers them a mind-opening experience that connects them to the world beyond their own, guiding them in developing empathy and understanding for people from diverse backgrounds. For his students with limited access to travel or international experiences, this exposure is life-changing, broadening their knowledge of the world and preparing them to engage in multicultural environments with confidence and compassion.

In addition to his work in his classroom and community in Oklahoma, Mr. Madrigal's kindness and dedication to making a positive impact extend globally. When he's not teaching, he spends his free time volunteering with an organization called Casas por Cristo to help build homes for families in need in Mexico and Guatemala, demonstrating his deep commitment to service. Mr. Madrigal participated in these life-changing projects and took the initiative to raise funds, ensuring that families in these communities have access to safe and secure housing. His care for others and his commitment to making a meaningful difference reflect his strong character and his lasting influence on those around him.

"Knowing Ezequiel means knowing someone who makes the world a kinder, more encouraging place through the lens of language and culture. His ability to foster a sense of belonging and connection highlights the power of language in shaping both minds and hearts," said the colleague. "Through his example, I've become more intentional and empathetic in my teaching, reflecting deeply on how language influences how we teach and learn. His ability to inspire, motivate, and lead exemplifies what it means to be a LifeChanger. I wholeheartedly endorse his nomination with confidence that he will continue to make an invaluable impact in this community and everywhere he goes."

Zeke has always been a responsible leader that is mature beyond his years. I’ve witnessed his selflessness first hand and it’s been a pleasure to see him grow into the man he is today. I’m not sure if he understands the impact he’s made on others by being an example of hard-work, discipline & loving his family the way he does. We are very proud of Jr and pray for his continued success.

I had the chance to share the classroom with Mr. Madrigal when he invited me to teach his students how to make his favorite Mexican enchiladas one time and I was truly touched by the way he taught, his dedication, his devotion, and his love for each one of his students and helping them to grow and get the most out of them and to give their all because the results of their efforts will be worth it. He is admirable as a teacher, as a person in his community. For all those reasons I am so proud to call him my son!

Zeke is a selfless person who leads by example and sacrifice. I am blessed to have him as a volunteer on my team at church, but he never fails to go above and beyond. His character is of the highest standard, his commitment to his friends, family, and students’ is evident, and the way he carries himself on a daily basis is something to strive to be admired.

I have known Zeke off and on since he was a child; he and my granddaughter were best friends. He even assisted my son-in-law with yard tasks around my house, always with a smile on his face - and Zeke has a heart-warming smile. I have so admired his educational path but want to speak to his character of service outside the educational arena. For many years in middle school, high school, and college, Zeke used his spring breaks to go to Mexico, usually Acuna in the earlier days, then Juarez under the organization Cases por Cristos, to assist in building houses for the homeless. In later years, his participation in the builds expanded beyond spring break. He is sponsoring a memorial build in Juarez for May 2025. I believe Zeke's life purpose is to be of service in any way that he can - through the classroom and beyond; through church; and through the example of his life. He is a point of light in this world.

Zeke embodies so much that is good about people. He’s equally capable as both a caregiver and a mentor in a way that is so valuable for his students to have. He also works so hard to continually better himself and his community. He’s an ideal example of what a man, teacher, and Christian should be and I know that I’m made better through the examples he sets by the life he lives.

Zeke champions goodness in people and for people- especially his students and other people he serves with his life. He is generous with his time, energy, knowledge, and giftings on a consistent basis for the sake of serving and educating others, but that generosity is never self-elevating. It’s always done with a heart to educate and give platform to his students. I’ve been lucky to experience this same humility, generosity, inspiration, and education in the form of friendship too. He has certainly changed my life through the mere witnessing of his passion for education. Ezequiel would be a fitting, worthy, and humble recipient of such a reward.
