Music that Describes Briana
Briana Morales was nominated by a member of the community, Emily Gasca.
Ms. Morales is a force of positive change, a passionate advocate, and an exceptional educator whose impact stretches beyond the classroom. As a teacher, community leader, and founder of the nonprofit Sisterhood of Hope (SoH), her work has touched countless lives, empowering students, colleagues, and communities nationwide. She embodies the essence of a "LifeChanger" — a trailblazer committed to uplifting and inspiring others, particularly those from underprivileged and marginalized backgrounds.
"I first met Briana during the pandemic on the online platform Clubhouse, where educators from all over the country gathered to discuss important issues in education. Even in that virtual space, Briana's wisdom and thoughtfulness stood out. She shared valuable insights that resonated with teachers, helping us navigate the challenges of online learning. Briana had a unique ability to communicate complex ideas in ways that were both accessible and empowering. Her advice was always practical yet profound, and her approach was rooted in a deep understanding of the systemic challenges faced by students, particularly those from Black and Brown communities. Briana's contributions as an educator have been nothing short of transformative," said Gasca.
Despite her young age, she has already been recognized as Illinois' Teacher of the Year and has become a sought-after global speaker. Her advocacy for Black and Brown students, particularly adolescent girls, is unwavering. She is also a doctoral candidate dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for marginalized youth. Ms. Morales teaches at an alternative school in St. Louis, Illinois, where she helps students heal and thrive through the power of writing. She has developed a culturally responsive curriculum that centers the needs and voices of her students, recognizing that their cultural backgrounds and life experiences are vital to their growth and learning.
As a community leader and advocate, her work extends beyond the classroom. She has met with state and federal lawmakers to push for policies that address the needs of underprivileged students. Her advocacy has created lasting change in her local community and the national stage. Her tireless commitment to seeing every young girl — especially those from Black and Brown communities — succeed is at the heart of her work. She is determined to help these girls build the confidence to be bold, break generational barriers, and overcome systemic challenges related to their environment and lack of resources.
Ms. Morales is the founder of Sisterhood of Hope, a nonprofit she created in honor of a former student who tragically lost her life in a car accident. The student, a young mother, left behind two children, and her death left a lasting impact on her. She sees her students not just as pupils but as younger siblings, and this loss motivated her to establish a mentorship program that provides young women with the support they need to succeed. The Sisterhood of Hope serves adolescent girls in St. Louis, Chicago, and surrounding suburbs, helping them build confidence and leadership skills through mentorship, empowerment, and community engagement. Each year, these young women present their year-long projects at a symposium, showcasing their growth and the positive changes they've made in their communities. What started as a vision in St. Louis has become a nationwide initiative, helping young girls find their voices and create meaningful change in their lives and communities.
As Teacher of the Year in Illinois, Ms. Morales traveled the country, sharing her story and advocating for the needs of students in underserved communities. Her speaking engagements have impacted educators, administrators, and school leaders, inspiring them to adopt more inclusive and culturally responsive practices. She can connect with people and tailor her message to her audience, ensuring that her insights are heard and acted upon. In her classroom, she goes above and beyond for her students. She ensures that essentials like toiletries, school supplies, and even holiday gifts are readily available to those in need. Her selflessness and compassion make her an educator and a true mentor and role model for all who know her.
Ms. Morales' impact is immeasurable. As a teacher, founder, and community leader, she has touched thousands of lives and continues to inspire and empower young people to reach their full potential. She is a rare and invaluable gift to our society — a true LifeChanger who exemplifies the power of passion, purpose, and perseverance.
I've worked with Briana for years to advocate for high quality education and the supports students need to realize their potential. There is no one who loves young people more, or is more passionate about making a difference for every child. She leans into supporting young people who have faced trauma and tragedy, giving them the love and support they need. She is a life-changing difference maker and a force for good, and I'm thrilled that she has founded an organization to extend her impact far beyond her classroom!
Brianna has been a delight to get to know as a colleague at GBAC! She is always going above and beyond for the students that so desperately need our support and guidance. The students know that she is a trusted adult that they can always turn to when needed.
Every December, Ms. Morales works extremely hard to assemble present packages for her students with items they need, along with items for fun. This is a huge undertaking and she does it with joy, just to give our students a little bit of cheer that they all need. Briana Morales will always be GBAC’s LifeChanger of the Year! We are blessed and grateful that she is ours!
It has been an absolute honor and privilege to get to know Briana through our participation in the State Teachers of the Year cohort. From our very first conversation, I was struck by her genuine belief that every student has greatness within them, no matter their background or current circumstances. She excels at recognizing the innate intellect and potential in each learner, particularly those who are most at risk of falling through the cracks. Her unwavering determination to uplift at-risk students is matched only by her impressive intellect and remarkable ability to think outside the box.
As a veteran educator with 33 years of classroom experience, I’m continually inspired by Briana’s passion and commitment. She challenges me to reflect on my own practice, always pushing my thinking and motivating me to reach higher for the sake of my students. Her insights are both sharp and compassionate, creating a powerful blend of academic rigor and empathetic teaching that resonates deeply with colleagues and learners alike.
Briana’s future in education is undeniably bright, and this is a tremendous gift to every student who will have the privilege of entering her classroom. She has a unique talent for making students feel seen, heard, and valued, fostering an environment where intellectual curiosity and personal growth are celebrated. I have no doubt that she will continue to inspire, elevate, and transform countless lives, and I am grateful to call her both a colleague and a friend.
I am in an Educational Leadership program with Brianna. She is an incredible teacher, mentor, friend and classmate. I'm proud of her accomplishments and how she handles everything with poise, patience, and a smile. It's not easy being a parent, especially of a young child while pursuing higher education. She is doing it and doing it well!
Brianna Morales is an outstanding human being and an incredible teacher. I have been blessed enough to know her since high school, and she has always gone the extra mile for others. Briana has devoted her time to participate in endless groups, conferences, seminars, and meetings to both further her knowledge and teach others how to be anti-racist and teach youth in a culturally supportive way. Briana is a great friend to absolutely anyone she encounters and there is nobody more deserving of this award.
In the words of the great John Lewis:
“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
Ms. Bri Morales is an educator who embodies this charge to heal the self so you can heal our world; to take the hardest moments in our lives, and use them as a catalyst to help those around us to also heal. In her Alternative Ed classroom she addresses the whole child by using writing as healing in ELA. Her trauma-informed practices, care, compassion and healing principles are at the core of the curriculum she has created. As a leader in professional development, she continues to share this wisdom with other educators so they too can create these spaces of healing for their students.
As an advocate, she is constantly getting in “good trouble”; the kind where we take action, speak up, and most importantly, do what is needed to make lasting change.
It is for these reasons that she started her nonprofit SisterHood of Hope to help young girls find their voice through mentorship and empowerment.
When I think of a person who should be elevated and awarded for their work, it should always be someone who will use that gift to make an even larger impact. With the seeds she has already planted, and the many more this would allow her to harvest, there is no one more deserving of this honor.

2024 Oregon Teacher of the Year
Briana, you bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that inspire others to grow professionally in their craft in education. You always bring such valuable insights during group discussions. It’s a pleasure working with you.
To know Ms. Morales or Bri is to love her dedication to education and uplifting the most deserving people in the world of love, care, and compassion–her students. I met Bri in 2023 through the CEO Teach Plus Teacher Cabinet. I was immediately awe-struck by her capacity to lead during the most challenging parts of her life and still selflessly uplift her students in Alternative Education during her journey as 2023-24 Teacher of the Year for Illinois. Her students joined her at baseball games to throw out pitches, and the Drew Berrymore show to celebrate the non-profit she started in her students' memory after a tragic car accident took her young life and left her two sons without her, SisterHood of Hope. While Bri was dealing with her own losses in life, she never stopped creating and giving her students access to quality education, social-emotional learning opportunities, and emotional support from her and her organization. Many of Bri's students and young women in her non-profit do not receive care, concern, or compassion. Bri has advocated for students/young people who are usually never or rarely heard or seen in the space of education and life. Bri has championed every child as the nation's and world's children. She realizes the depth of having a community that sees students as whole people and not a product of their circumstances, and most importantly, she never gives up on her students to create a life that's different from the one they are currently living. Not only is she helping her students, but she is also helping communities outside of her school through her nonprofit SisterHood of Hope across Illinois. She has helped lead quality professional learning to teachers and education advocates across Illinois to help them create lessons for students deeply rooted in trauma-informed practices for the classroom, and she has shared that freely nationwide with our cohort as Teachers of the Year. Bri continually leads the conversation in competency-based education for learners in her state and beyond. She doesn't just stop at her classroom; she advocates, supports, and uplifts in every space she interacts with. Changemakers don't just stay silent with a door closed; they positively disrupt systems to meet the needs of every learner and person who needs help, support, and care. Bri is an example of caring about the whole system of education and life combined and changing it for the better every day in every way for everyone. I am honored to write this for her and call her my friend. I deeply admire her; she inspires me with all that she does and all that she is.
First and foremost, Briana is dedicated to her students, making it her mission to ensure that each one feels valued, seen, and understood. She goes beyond academic instruction by intentionally fostering genuine relationships with her students, creating a safe and welcoming environment where they feel empowered to learn and grow. Her classroom is a place where trust and respect are foundational, enabling students to take risks, ask questions, and fully engage in their education.
Briana is deeply committed to equity and advocacy, particularly for students who are often overlooked or marginalized within today’s educational systems. With an unwavering passion, she works tirelessly to uplift Black and Brown students in the alternative education setting, recognizing the unique challenges they may face. She pours her heart into her work, not only helping these students meet academic goals but also nurturing their sense of self-worth, belonging, and potential. Her belief in their abilities is evident in everything she does, inspiring students to overcome barriers and envision a brighter future for themselves.
Through her dedication, empathy, and unwavering support, Briana is more than a teacher — she is a champion for her students and a catalyst for change, leaving an indelible impact on their lives and futures.
I first met Ms. Morales at Danville High School District 118 in 2017. Majority of my peers had her as a teacher. Although I never had her as a teacher, she still impacted my life for the better. Her kindness and compassion wasn’t limited to only her students but to all. She opened her door to me. For free periods, I would go to her class. I could ask her for help and I knew I wouldn’t be judged. Now, I’m studying Vocal Music Education at Eastern Illinois University. During assignments I often reflect on how Ms. Morales would approach it. She might not have been my teacher but she is still one of the most influential teachers I know. If I am half as good as her, I will be a good educator. She is a role model to me and for many others. I am blessed to have known her. Although District 118 didn’t have her for long, she made a lasting impact on us. Ms. Morales deserves all the blessings this world has to offer her. She is one of a kind. Her love for her students and her job speaks volumes. I am forever thankful for Ms. Morales.
It has been a pleasure being neighbors with Briana. Her kindness and authenticity is wonderful and rare when only meeting someone in passing. She’s always going places to support underserved youth. Since she and I have had the same number of years in the classroom, her accomplishments within these challenging years are incredible. She is an inspiration and gives me that hope teachers are seen for all the work we do!
Ms.Morales was one of the best teachers I ever had. She is apart of the reason I am who I am today. She is the perfect role model for me she makes me wanna follow her footsteps and pursue my career in education. She deserves everything coming her way !
I met Briana through a post for helping teens at Christmas. She makes a gift bag for each of her students that contains goodies and necessities and asks for the community’s help.
I am a 75 year old woman who wants to always support young people who enrich their communities.
Briana and I have stayed connected and I follow her accomplishments closely. This is a young woman who is the epitome of what we hope our future generations will be. She deserves every possible accolade to encourage her to keep making a difference in the next generation.
My granddaughter had Ms. Morales as a teacher and I do believe it was her first year teaching 9th grade. Marissa was so sad when she left. She said that her teacher was the best teacher ever. She loved her like family! A few years later we lost Marissa. Briana Morales reached out to us and had genuine condolences for my family. She really does love ALL of her students, past and present!! I’ve never had the privilege of meeting her, but I can tell you that of all the nominations for this award, Ms Morales is the perfect person for this!! She definitely changed my granddaughters life and made a huge impact on her world!
Briana touched my life for the first time when she presented at an East St. Louis School District 189 board meeting. Learning about the organization "SisterHood of Hope" that she started, completely built from the ground up, and took off running with, really reeled me in to learn more and figure out how I could be part of the organization. Some words that describe Brianna are; passion, intelligence, dedication, and kindness. Over the past 6 months I have watched her evolve and do great things in her position as a leader. Teaching was definitely her calling and as she continues to grow and thrive, I am proud to say that I know Brianna Morales!
Where do i start?? If it wasn’t for ms morales i dont know where ill be right now , I love you so much im so happy for you YOU DESERVE IT ALL you are so blessed ?? ,
Ms.Morales was my former English teacher in 11th and 12th grade. Honestly our time shared together, I couldn’t think of anyone else more deserving of this than the icon herself! Her time and self-driven dedication for her students is unmatched. She goes ABOVE and beyond for everyone around her and lets nothing get in the way of that because that is simply who she is. She has inspired me in countless ways that does not go unnoticed and for that I am forever grateful. Since I’ve graduated in 2021, we’ve grown so close it’s actually scary. She’s Always there for me whether it’s me needing a listening ear to vent to or help revamping my resume for a job I’m filling out for. She is a true gem in the flesh and it’s so amazing being around to see her achieve all of these things and rooting for her on the sidelines wishing her nothing but everything she’s deserves!!
Briana is an amazing, student centered educator and community activist. I can think of no one who is more deserving of this award. She is most definitely a change maker; fighting for the rights of all marginalized students, and especially the underprivileged girls she supports through her non-profit organization. The strength with which Briana has overcome her own challenges and turned them into a platform with which she serves others is truly remarkable. She is, without a doubt, the most accomplished young person I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Her impact on her students, community, and world at large is immeasurable. She is passionate about being compassionate and is an inspiration to all who know her.
Bri works tirelessly to improve the lives of the young people she serves. She is constantly advocating for the needs of others, especially those in marginalized communities. Her dedication to her students and her non-profit make her an exemplary candidate for LifeChanger of the Year.
To know Briana Morales is to witness a force of unwavering dedication and relentless passion for education and empowerment. Reading this letter of support brought such joy and pride, as it perfectly captures the transformative leader and advocate she is. Bri and I first connected through the Teach Plus Policy Fellowship, where her presence alone commanded respect and admiration. She has a unique ability to lead with both strength and compassion, leaving an indelible impact on everyone she meets.
Her work ethic is unmatched, and her passion for empowering students, particularly girls of color, knows no bounds. Bri’s commitment to creating a more equitable world for her students is evident in everything she does. She is a role model, not only to the students lucky enough to call her their teacher but also to colleagues who strive to emulate her approach to education and care.
What’s even more remarkable is that Bri has continued this critical work without pause, even as she embarked on the beautiful journey of motherhood this past year. Balancing her personal and professional roles with such grace speaks volumes about her character and resilience. Briana is truly a LifeChanger in every sense of the word—her impact is profound, her care is genuine, and her vision is inspiring. There is no one more deserving of this honor.
If passion was contagious, Ms. Morales is definitely infecting everyone she comes in contact with. I am greatful to be a part of such an amazing organization, Sisterhood of Hope. Ms. Morales words
are genuine and spoken from the heart. Her actions are selfless and inspire others to act. She is definitely changing life's of the mentees and mentors who are apart of the organization. No one deserves this award more than she does.
Briana is my former student. I’ve seen her grow into an incredible person and educator firsthand. She knows what debilitating obstacles are, both from her own experiences and from being an empathetic teacher who is present in all aspects for her students. I don’t know of a harder working person anywhere who will do whatever it takes to help others grow and thrive.
Ms. Briana Morales, has truly made an extraordinary impact on the lives of others through her dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference. Her ability to inspire, support, and uplift those around her is nothing short of remarkable. Bri exemplify what it means to be a life changer, and her contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy. She is so deserving of this recognition!”
I met Bri at a time when I put into my plans “I want to give back to my community,” and I saw a post on Facebook about being a mentor to teenage girls in Illinois and I filled the application out. Meeting Bri and understanding the “WHY” behind Sisterhood of HOPE, and seeing how she gravitates to her students and love on the students she teaches made me want to be apart of the program more! Briana is a LIFECHANGER.
Briana Morales is a true LifeChanger and an inspiration to so many. Her unwavering dedication to empowering marginalized students and her transformative work with the Sisterhood of Hope demonstrate the profound impact an educator can have. Through her culturally responsive teaching and tireless advocacy, Briana uplifts not only her students but entire communities. Her passion, purpose, and perseverance inspire educators and young people alike, making her a role model and a force for lasting change. She embodies what it means to change lives and deserves this recognition wholeheartedly.
Briana’s commitment to students’ personal growth and academic success has made an incredible impact on individuals inside and outside of the classroom. I admire her “heart-work” and the ways in which she has transformed the lives of many.
Briana was a student in my advanced sophomore English class. Briana was 16 and she challenged me to challenge her. I remember that 'look' as she would listen, doubt, and question. She loved to write, and I wanted to see those words in precise English grammar. She 'tried my patience', as the saying goes. Yet, she kept working - very determined to excel. In her senior year, in lieu of a study hall, Briana joined me in a similar sophomore classroom to shadow and assist me in teaching. So many questions! Now she could 'see' herself in them. She could 'hear' both voices - that of herself/the student and herself/the teacher. She also saw from both angles that personal lives co-existed with and regardless of the classroom, that none of us exists exclusively as we are seen.
As I follow Briana's teaching career, I frequently think back to those days with a smile. Briana doesn't give up or give in. She finds purpose to keep going. Usually that purpose is to prove to others that THEY have a purpose.
Briana is one of the most talented and passionate educators and philanthropist you could ever meet. She uses her heart, resources, and network invest in youth who have been historically underserved and overlooked. Briana has impacted the lives of so many youth and their families. She is truly a LIFECHANGER!!
Ms. Morales is the perfect choice for this award. She is truly changing lives in her community, in the state of Illinois, and across the country. As a fellow teacher of the year, I have witnessed the work that Bri has done and continues to do as a teacher, an education ambassador, and a non-profit creator. The work she does in and out of her classroom provides students the hope and the opportunities they need to be whatever they want to be. Bri has started organizations that make differences in the lives of so many. No one is more deserving of this recognition! I am so proud to know her.
To know Bri is to love her. Reading this letter of support brought tears to my eyes in reflecting on the change maker that is my dear friend. Bri and I first met through the 2024 State Teacher of the Year Cohort. She was one of the first people to make me feel welcome. She exudes positivity and radiates love. She has made a lasting impact on my life through all that I have learned from her as a fellow alternative ed teacher. I cannot think of someone more deserving for this award. It needs to be mentioned that she has continued to do her passionate work without missing a beat, all while welcoming her first born into the world this past year. She is truly a phenomenal person to whom this award should be granted.
Ms. Morales fiercely loves her students and works hard to ensure their basic needs are met and that they have every opportunity to be successful in life past her classroom. She builds relationships with her students, and they are always returning because they know they can depend on her support. Passionate about student safety and success, I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.
Bri is the true definition of a life changer. I had the pleasure of advocating alongside her in Washington, D.C., and witnessed her unwavering dedication to her students, community, and nonprofit work is nothing short of extraordinary. She inspires excellence, advocates tirelessly, and leaves a lasting impact on everyone she meets. This nomination is well-deserved, and she is a shining example of the voice and power educators hold to transform the world.

She is the definition of “above and beyond,” and she pours her heart and soul into her students and community. Her foundation, Sisterhood of Hope, is doing incredible work with at risk girls of color and helping make their dreams come true.
Briana‘s drive, perseverance, and heart are commendable. I have incredible respect for this remarkable educator and the work she is doing to help teen girls.
I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Briana.
Bri is a tireless advocate for her students. A lot of people talk about what they wish they could do for kids, Bri takes action.
Ms. Morales is such an important pillar to the community!
I have gotten to know Briana as an adult, and while so much of her work impacts children in unbelievable ways, she’s also has greatly changed my life. Being in her presence is a true inspiration. She makes me thrive to be a better teacher, a better human, a better mother. When I got to learn about how she teaches writing to her students, I almost instantly felt like I was in her class. She uses writing as a way to empower her students and give their opportunities to heal. Learning about this made me want try it myself and I have felt my little inner child healing along the journey. She’s pushing me to better myself and I hope I can use that to help my students even deeper. The ripple effect of her impact is not only felt by all those lucky enough to know her, but also by all those who carry her with them in her heart and spread her love even further.
Briana is one of the most inspiring educators I have ever met or even read about. She is so selfless and dedicated in her pursuit to help teen girls. She has devoted her talents to the alternative school world, because she knows that’s where she can have the greatest impact. As California Teacher of the Year, I have had the opportunity to work with and meet so many incredible people—and Briana tops the list. This award would be in the perfect place with Bri and she will take this to lengths not imagined by anyone else—to change the lives of young people who most need that help. Please give your consideration to Briana for this honor.

Briana Morales is a national treasure! Her receiving this recognition would help countless women of color achieve more than they ever thought possible! There is no better example of the selfless dedication that she has for her students than that fact! Congratulations Briana!
We live in a society where education not only transforms lives, it disrupts narratives, change families’ trajectories and revolutionizes communities. Teachers like Briana Morales, see students for all that they could be and work tirelessly to be their voice in spaces where they can’t be, while also providing resources through her non profit organization, beyond the classroom setting. Education is about building relationships, bridging the gaps, teaching confidence and hope, despite the odds. Thank you Briana for truly understanding that students are not defined by their circumstances. There is always room to grow and build capacity.
“ LifeChanger” is the perfect way to describe Ms.Morales, I used to be a hot headed young lady who got mad at anything. Meeting Morales was undoubtedly the best thing to happen to me. She helped me be understood and heard. She helped me be able to handle my feelings and emotions better rather than just yelling or shutting down when somebody spoke to me in a way I didn’t like or just didn’t understand. Instead of “ LifeChanger of the year”, She’s a LifeChanger always. When you mention Ms.Morales you don’t just see a beautiful woman, you see all her accomplishments and every impact she instilled in children and even teachers everywhere.
I have had the honor of knowing Briana for nearly a decade now. The amount of good she has put into the world over the years is, at times, unbelievable. She is relentless in her pursuit to help those who needs it. Even when life throws hardships in her path--which is more often than anyone deserves--she does not let her momentum stutter or slow. We first met as undergraduate students, where I got to witness her dedication, enthusiasm, and sheer will in person. Since graduating, I have watched her grow as a teacher, new mom, and individual from afar. Many times I've watched in awe and always with endless amounts of pride.
Briana's work to better her community (and beyond) is not a 40 hours a week job. She never clocks out. Not a moment passes where she isn't thinking of ways she can make positive changes. She's the type of teacher we all hope our children get to experience; she's the type of person we all hope they end up being. The love and deep respect she carries for each person who walks through her classroom door is undeniable. Briana's dedication is unmatched.
There are a lot of inspiring people in this world, but Bri has got to be near the very top of the list. We're all better for knowing her and better still for knowing there are people like her willing to go above and beyond to make a lasting, positive change.
Briana is a light in this world the likes of which I’m not sure we’ve seen before. Her life, and life’s work, cannot be separated. She makes the world a more loving place, and makes sure every individual in her presence experiences love in ACTION, not just love in words.
