Matthew Brown is the epitome of strength and leadership. Despite losing both parents within a very short period of time and dealing with severe grief, Matthew never once wavered his relentless commitment as a mentor, educator, coach, and community leader. I've had the privilege of knowing Matthew his entire life. I can confidently attest to his exceptional integrity, honesty, and compassion for others. Matthew consistently demonstrates a strong driving force for positive advancement and change in the lives of others. He's an admired football coach at St. Augustine High School, his alma mater, where he played football himself. He gives back to the community as Gentilly Santa spreading joy and love to children and families. Matthew broke a barrier when he was reigned the first black King of any Mardi Gras Krewe (Excalibur) in Metairie. This accomplishment was a testament to his players and students that anything is possible with dedication. He didn't stop there, he invited the St. Augustine Marching 100 band to lead his float during the parade, sharing the honor with those who look up to him. Matthew also received a Certificate of Appreciation from New Orleans City Council for his exceptional contribution towards fostering prosperity for the city's youth. Matthew Brown truly deserves to be called a Life Changer!

Matthew has been my friend for almost a decade and a half, and I can truly say he’s one in a million. He is beyond deserving of this award and any other recognition you could bestow upon him. Matthew is the definition of “that guy”—the one you can call in your highest moments and your lowest. Your happiest or saddest and he will be there. He will not sugarcoat the truth, nor will he just simply hold your hand. Instead, he’ll offer wisdom, encouragement, maybe a joke, but of course, the clarity you didn’t know you needed. What makes Matt truly amazing is how God continues to show up in him daily, even when life throws its challenges his way. His faith and resilience shine through, inspiring everyone around him. He’s committed to lifelong learning, always educating himself so he can better serve and uplift others. Charismatic is an understatement—perhaps “class act” is the more fitting term. His heart for people, his integrity, and his ability to transform lives — makes him a life changer in every sense of the word. Teacher, student, coach, friend, father, disciplinarian, dean, whatever the title or role is, he will always give his best. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor.

Torch barer is the appropriate description of Matthew Brown. He exudes the passion that is necessary for one who looks to make an impact on the community. Always going above and beyond to extend a helping hand, Matthew can be seen on the sidelines coaching football for NORD and St. Augustine High School. His passion for shaping youthful minds of the community is evident as he walks the hallways of his beloved St. Augustine High School as Dean of Students to keeping the magic of Christmas alive for all kids as Gentilly Santa. If the aforementioned were not enough, Matthew has brightened the eyes of young boys and girls alike with his reign as the first African-American King of the Krewe of Excalibur. Matthew's story brings hope to the community that all things are possible. In addition to being a leader and mentor in the community, Matthew's greatest joy though, is his title of "Dad" to his son. It is without reservation that I delight in the nomination alone of Matthew Brown, Sr. as LifeChanger of the Year. Congratulations Sir, you works are not in vain!

Matt has been more than a mentor; he’s family. From the moment I met him at camp as a little girl, he believed in me in ways that shaped who I am today. His constant encouragement and heartfelt advice reminded me of my worth and pushed me to leave my mark on the world. When I think of Matt Brown, I’m reminded of the words he once shared with me: “I really watched you blossom from that cool little girl at camp to a beautiful, smart, intelligent woman…I’m so proud to be your big brother. Growing up, I always wanted a little sister to protect and look after—well, in 2012, God answered my prayers!” Beyond his impact on me, Matt’s love for uplifting young people is unmatched. Whether coaching at St. Augustine or spreading joy as “Gentilly Santa,” he leads with compassion and purpose, changing lives with every step he takes. Matt is more than a role model—he’s a LifeChanger and my big brother for life.

Coach Brown is a positive role model for students in the city of New Orleans, especially the young men at St. Aug. Not a day goes by without him offering words of wisdom and encouragement to those students who need it most. Some may view his approach as tough love, but in turn he teaches character, accountability, discipline, and respect. The young men truly appreciate that! When he’s not making miracles happen at school, he’s out in the community helping others. Mr. Brown is deserving of this nomination. He is an everyday “LifeChanger”!
