Arjelis Heredia was nominated by a colleague, Sue Mellitt.
Ms. Heredia, also known as "Ms. Arjelis" has “created a curriculum that intertwines education, social skills, and preparation for futures in any profession.” Ms. Arjelis always develops a unique and engaging curriculum to keep students – especially middle school students – engaged. For example, her students have put on fashion shows conducted entirely in Spanish as a language class. Social studies examines social justice, civics, and global economics, where students learn experientially through debate, bank account openings, and community service. They study the classics in modern language.
During the holidays, students make sandwiches and deliver them to the local shelters and food kitchens. To understand the significance of these achievements, you need to know the school. CCS is an independent, nonprofit institution (pre-K through 8th grade) in a troubled urban area that only takes underprivileged children. Families pay little to no tuition but show dedication to their child’s educational and social success. The school is primarily supported by its reputation and donations.
Ms. Arjelis is always the first to come forward with ideas and activities that boost the whole school. She not only provides ideas but also leads others with urgency and joy. The entire student body meets together each morning to create a community atmosphere. Ms. Arjelis’ contribution is to teach everyone a Spanish phrase and the sign language to match. She is a bilingual resource for the entire school.
Even as a single mom, she finds time to make food for the soup kitchen and coordinates an after-school mentoring program that matches adult mentors with students preparing to graduate and taking the big step of going off to high school. Many of these students have only ever attended CCS. Professionally, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in child psychology and a Master’s degree in education and has 13 years of experience at the school. However, evidence of her talent is a 100% graduation rate from her class, with many students being accepted to private schools and elite early college programs. She has had 10 published authors in the Young Writers of America nationwide writing contest.
The principal says, “Students leave her class working at a higher caliber than most area high school freshmen and sophomores, and data supporting this claim can be provided.”
To ask her, the most important thing she teaches students is to prepare for the future and be respectful. The students talk about their interests in future professions, and she invites those professionals to come and spend a day with them, including former students who can share their experiences in new schools and programs.
Most of all, she teaches her students that you must give respect to get respect. It’s one of many lessons that they take with them forever. But they never forget her; some still reach out even when facing important choices later in life. The school’s first yearbook was dedicated to her, and it included quotes from students:
- Leh’onni - The hardest part about leaving CCS will be leaving Ms. Arjelis.
- Kimanie - Ms. Arjelis teaches us life lessons and says what has to be said whether good or bad. She is firm and the greatest teacher I have seen.
- Aliya - She believes in us and we believe in her.
- Celina - She never failed to make the day better. I will never forget her.
- Alhaji - Ms. Arjelis picks us up when we are down and never gives up even when we are wrong. I am going to make you proud.

Ms. Arjelis was an awesome teacher! She has helped my daughter in so many ways. My daughter had the pleasure of having her as a teacher in multiple grades and I have always felt she cared about her students as if they were her own kids. She is one teacher that will go above and beyond for her students and made sure she stayed in communication with parents every step of the way. She definitely deserves this recognition.
I have known Ms. Arjelis and her family for many years. She is the living example of "Do For Others". Her selfless, singlemindedness for her students success in evident every day. She looks at the whole child. Knowing that if the parents are struggling or in need this will effect the child. Her outreach to parents and the community is evident in the success she sees in the classroom. No child feels less than in her classroom. Every child is lifted up and exceeds their wildest potential. She is the most humble person I have ever met. Ms. Arjelis never seeks the spotlight. She is well deserving of this recognition.
I have a long history of spotting fakes. Having a 30 year career in law enforcement before becoming a school counselor and doctoral candidate. She is the most genuine, loving, caring and competent teacher I have known.
I've had the pleasure of working with Arjelis in the Mentoring program at Children's Community School since 2018. She's an incredible role model for her "children" (students) and goes above and beyond everyday for them. You'll never see her not smiling and helping someone. There's no greater recipient of the Life Changer of the Year award than Ms. Arjelis Heredia.
Ms. Arjelis,
You are one of the strongest women I have met. Coteaching with you was a wonderful experience. You used your strengths to support me and you let me use my strengths to support you. I was sad when you left Pre K but have loved watching you as the kindergarten teacher, and now as a middle school teacher.
As a mother you loved my Serena. You taught her the skills and strategies that she needed to be successful in kindergarten. As an eighth grader you are still checking on her, offering to come to school meetings so she is receiving the support she needs.
Thank you!

Anyone would be lucky to have you as their teacher.
Beyond academics, you are a constant source of encouragement and support. Your willingness to listen, to guide, and to mentor made you not just a teacher, but a true role model.
I could speak about Ms.Arjelis all day . Your ability to make even the most complex concepts accessible, coupled with your genuine enthusiasm for the subject matter, made every class a captivating experience.
My sister always kept us ahead of the curb academically and she does the same with my kids.

It is wonderful to see someone put the youth first. Ms. Arjelis values each and one of her relationship with her students, exhibiting great patience and kindness. I would recommend her to watch my own kids given how involved and good-natured Ms. Arjelis is.
Reading the posted comments, Arjelis’s dedication to her students and their community match what my friend has told me. Our country needs more examples of service to community that are exemplified in her clear commitment to go the extra mile making a positive difference in the lives of her students.
"No" is not in Arjelis Heredia's vocabulary. She does not accept "No" or "I Can't" from her students either. She attends PTO meetings, Runs the Mentoring Program after school, leads planning committees, mentors new teachers, trains student tour guides, plans curriculum, attends most school and family events, and engages students in their community. Arjelis is connected to students after they graduate from our school and knows who is a struggling learner or who needs some attention beyond academics. She knows which students are hungry or need winter coats or donated uniform pieces. She sets high standards and then ensures students have the tools to reach their goals. Arljelis is a Life Changer.
There is not a person more deserving of this award than Ms. Arjelis. I’ve only had the honor of being her colleague for a short time, but as she does for her students, she sparked a whole new interest and excitement about education for me. Ms. Arjelis makes one of the most difficult jobs of being an educator look natural. It’s because of her passion for learners that this is possible. I cannot think of another person more deserving than Ms Arjelis. She is thoughtful, caring, compassionate, and dedicated in everything she does and gives. She is a life changer.
I am a board member and mentor at CCS I have had the pleasure of knowing Arjelis for the past 10 years She inspires her students and all that she comes in contact with to be the best person that they can be She teaches with passion and respect for all The kids love her and she works tirelessly to help each student to go above and beyond expectations I cannot think of anyone more deserving than Arjelis
Muchas felicidades Mrs.Arjelis se merece ese reconocimiento
Ms. Arjelis has been the foundation of the middle school program providing stability and resourcefulness. She consistently commits herself to what is best for her students, making personal sacrifices of time and energy. She cares about what happened to them yesterday, what is going on with them today, and where they are headed tomorrow. She educates as if she is continually keeping before her the question "How can I best get this cohort of students to their next step in education and in life with skills, confidence, and success."

Ms. Arjelis has been such a great influence on both of my children . She is very supportive and knowledgeable about various aspects of life. She has a nurturing spirit and a heart of gold. You’d be lucky to have crossed paths with her because she is also very comical. We love her so much and are so appreciative and grateful she has such a great impact on us. Thank you so much for everything you do and for going above and beyond without question. You deserve way more recognition but this is a great achievement. Congratulations Ms. Arjelis !!!
Both of my children absolutely love Ms. Arjelis! She has been such an important figure in their lives since they began CCS. She’s always attentive and knows the students. Both of my children haven’t been blessed to have her as a teacher so far yet the both have such a strong connection with her. This shows that she goes above and beyond!
This award couldn’t go to a more deserving, but humble person. She is always the first to volunteer to try something new, if she didn’t already think of it herself. She knows what our students need and she will fight for them to get it. I’ve never really met anyone quite like her and it is a privilege to say that I have known her both professionally and personally. Go woman!!!!
Ms Hereida is dedicated and extremely giving to her Students. Thank you for your passion and hard work.
Arjelis is a teacher to be emulated. Her creativity, dedication, expertise, and professionalism are evident not only through her lessons, but also through her example. Her students thrive and her colleagues admire and praise her. The examples she demonstrates daily both in the classroom and out of the classroom serve as visual reminders to all. She is a perfect example of a life changer as voiced by her students, her colleagues, and community members and is most deserving of this recognition.
I am a mentor at CCS , Miss Arjelis’s school. As a retired 7th and 8th grade teacher I am very aware of , not only the curriculum, but the emotional and social needs of students of this age. I know with Arjelis as teacher all of this aspects are being met. She is personally involved with each of her students, with a great understanding of each one’s needs, academically and socially. It is amazing and wonderful to see. It also reassures me that the next generation is in good hands.
I once read education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. That describes Miss Arjelis! She motivates her students to be curious, to want to know more. She helps them expand their horizons as well as inspiring kindness and respect! Her students are forever changed from the first day they meet her until they say goodbye on the last day!
Arjelis is truly a life changer for her students as well as her colleagues!
My name is Neil Culhane. My background is 45 years as an educator. I’ve been a classroom teacher, special ed teacher, middle school and high school, counselor, assistant principal and a principal at a high school. I loved this job and especially when I became an administrator byI was in control of hiring people. If I had received a résumé like the one that I see right now I would have offered her a contract on the spot! This is a true educator, and the word educate comes from the Latin word “educare” which means to care for; it doesn’t come from the Latin word, “educere” which means to lead out. This is a young lady who cares about people, who cares about her students; this is the type of person I wanted in my school because I knew then if I had a person like this, kids would learn, kids would enjoy coming to school. Parents would feel comfortable. They would trust the teacher. They would trust the school. Her résumé speaks volumes of her, and it would be an injustice if she did not get the award for which she has been nominated.
Ms. Hereida is a hard worker and teaches with a passion. She loves her work and children.
Ms. Arjelis. Passionate. Encouraging. Supportive. Dedicated. Inspiring. I cried reading your well deserved nomination. Arjelis is a beautiful person inside and out with the kindest soul. Once you have met her you can never forget her. No matter your age she has a way of inspiring you. You got this!
The best teacher I know. Makes huge impacts on every student she knows, hosts parties for them, follows them even after they leave Children’s Community School, and overall leaves them with lessons they carry throughout young adulthood.
My sister Arjelis is the most dedicated and deserving person for this award. She has been an amazing role model and aunt for my 4 children throughout their lives. Since we were little she has always wanted to become a teacher, making our parents act as her students and getting to see her live out dreams is truly inspiring. There is no one more deserving of this award.

She goes above and beyond by creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed. Her dedication is evident in her thoughtful lesson plans, her willingness to stay after hours to provide extra help, and her ability to inspire even the most reluctant learners. Former students often reflect on how graduating from school and leaving behind Ms. Heredia was the hardest part of their educational journey, a testament to the deep connections she builds with her students. Her unwavering belief in their potential and her constant encouragement leave an indelible mark, instilling in them the confidence to tackle challenges and strive for greatness. Ms. Heredia’s impact extends far beyond the classroom, shaping her students into lifelong learners and compassionate individuals.
