Music that Describes Baba Shannon

Baba Shannon (Sundiata) Mason was nominated by a colleague, Precious Allen.

Rising from a Teacher's Assistant to a Teacher for 12 years and now serving as Principal for 13 years, Mr. Mason's extraordinary 25-year journey at Betty Shabazz Academy represents an unparalleled commitment to educational excellence, equity, and community empowerment. His dedication to recruiting and retaining exceptional educators is both visionary and deeply personal. A passionate advocate for minority teacher recruitment, he has supported the Illinois Minority Teachers of Illinois (MTI) Scholarship program. This initiative, which received an $8 million investment for FY25, provides crucial resources to aspiring educators. His efforts have directly strengthened the teacher pipeline, ensuring students are taught by diverse, culturally responsive educators who reflect their community.

His impact extends far beyond scholarship advocacy and support. Mr. Mason recognizes the growing teacher shortage and the immense challenges that come with it, including the overwhelming demand for skilled educators and the emotional toll on those still in the profession. In response, he actively recruits former middle school students and graduates of Betty Shabazz Academy, who have returned after earning their college degrees, to serve as teacher assistants, paraprofessionals, and resource teachers. These young scholars are not just alumni but inspired educators eager to give back. Their return to the classroom helps alleviate staffing gaps while providing valuable mentorship to current students. They carry the torch of his leadership, enriching the school's culture and creating a sense of continuity and hope, even in the face of a challenging educational landscape. Their presence offers a powerful reminder of the importance of nurturing and supporting the next generation of teachers, especially in times of adversity.

"One of his former middle school students now serves a second term on the Board of Directors as President of the Parent Council, a testament to his work's profound and lasting impact. This achievement reflects his ability to nurture connections that transcend the classroom, advancing a multigenerational community of leaders who remain invested in the success of our school," said Allen.

His enduring influence on students, families, and stakeholders is a moving reminder of the transformative power of compassionate and visionary leadership. As an annual proponent of Illinois' Evidence-Based Funding (EBF) formula, Mr. Mason has championed equitable funding for K-12 education, supporting advocacy for resources that meet the specific needs of low-income students and English learners. Mr. Mason continues to support EBF efforts, which push for adequate and equitable funding for all districts. His support reflects an unyielding belief that every child deserves access to high-quality education, regardless of zip code. Mr. Mason has established a culture of continuous improvement that is immediately noticeable from the moment you walk through the doors of Betty Shabazz Academy. The school radiates warmth, love, and a deep sense of community, creating an environment where every student, educator, and family feels valued and supported.

Through robust systems that develop and sustain a shared vision of high expectations, Mr. Mason inspires his team to strive for excellence while fostering a professional learning community that equips educators and staff to meet the diverse needs of their students. His strategic initiatives ensure that instructional excellence is not just a goal but a cornerstone of the school's success. By holding every team member accountable for each student's academic and personal growth, Mr. Mason has cultivated a culture where everyone works collaboratively toward shared achievements, all within an atmosphere of support and collective purpose.

"Under Baba Sundiata's leadership, our school has become a model of strategically marrying theory and practice to achieve meaningful learning outcomes," said Allen.

He works closely with staff and community stakeholders, fostering partnerships that ensure evidence-based teaching practices are implemented and embraced as part of the school's culture. Whether it's through collaborative professional development sessions, workshops led by community leaders, or reflective teaching circles where educators share their successes and challenges, Mr. Mason creates growth opportunities that are both practical and transformative.

His deep investment in the professional growth of educators extends beyond the classroom. For example, teachers are funded to attend out-of-state conferences, pursue advanced certifications, and engage in peer mentorship, all with consistent support. This commitment has guaranteed improved outcomes for students by creating a teaching force that is both skilled and inspired. He has set an atmosphere where challenges are reframed as opportunities for learning, where obstacles become tools for growth rather than barriers to success.

"Through his leadership, our community has become a place where educators feel empowered, students feel supported, and learning is genuinely transformative and impactful. He has cultivated a high-expectations culture, ensuring every student is prepared for a future of limitless possibilities," said Allen.

Mr. Mason sets clear expectations for positive learning behaviors, encouraging students to take ownership of their actions and strive for excellence in every task. His emphasis on social-emotional learning is evident in the daily interactions between staff and students, whether it's a teacher taking time to listen to a student's concerns or a morning affirmation circle where children uplift one another. These practices create a nurturing yet rigorous environment where students feel seen, heard, and supported. His commitment to college and career readiness goes beyond academic preparation.

Through initiatives such as career days featuring alumni, college readiness workshops, and mentorship programs, he exposes students to pathways they may not have imagined for themselves. His dedication has inspired countless students to aspire toward greatness, instilling the confidence to dream big and the resilience to overcome obstacles in their academic and personal journeys.

"His leadership ensures that every child leaves our school equipped with the knowledge and the belief that their potential knows no bounds," said Allen.

His leadership extends far beyond the school walls, touching every corner of the community he serves. Mr. Mason has fostered a collaborative school environment where families, staff, and local stakeholders work together with a shared vision of success for every child. Through initiatives such as family literacy nights, community resource fairs, and student showcases celebrating academic and cultural achievements, he creates spaces where everyone feels valued and connected to the school's mission.

He empowers families to actively participate in their children's educational journeys by encouraging meaningful engagement. For example, it is a common practice to host parent-teacher dialogues where families can voice their aspirations and concerns, and he ensures they leave with actionable steps to support their children. His leadership inspires parents to become co-creators of their children's success stories, reinforcing that education is a shared responsibility. His ability to unite diverse voices, whether a parent, a teacher, or a local business leader, has strengthened the academy's bond with the broader community.

His leadership has transformed Betty Shabazz Academy into a hub of collective pride and progress, where everyone feels a profound sense of ownership and commitment to the school's success. Through his efforts, the academy is a place of learning and a pillar of hope and opportunity for the entire community. Through his visionary leadership, Mr. Mason has transformed Betty Shabazz Academy into a school of excellence where the aspirations of students, staff, and families are recognized daily. He is more than a principal; he is a change-maker, a mentor, and a champion for equity. His leadership has left an enduring mark on the broader educational landscape. His work has not only transformed the lives of his students but also inspired a movement in education that prioritizes cultural relevance, academic excellence, and community empowerment for future generations. His extraordinary 25-year journey at Betty Shabazz Academy exemplifies an unwavering dedication to education, equity, and community empowerment.

"It is with great honor that I nominate him for this recognition as a Life Changer who has inspired others to reimagine what is possible in education," said Allen.

Dear Baba Sundiata, Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve as a Junior Counselor at Body Trek summer camp. Body Trek is truly an exceptional program that provides young minds with hands-on, immersive experiences in the medical field. From learning about anatomy through dissections to exploring the fundamentals of health and nutrition, the program is a gateway to curiosity, discovery, and inspiration for students in grades 3 through 8. The students I worked with were absolutely amazing. As a pre-med student, having the chance to mentor and teach such enthusiastic and talented individuals was a privilege that boosted my confidence in sharing my knowledge and, just as importantly, learning from them. Over the past two years of volunteering, I’ve enjoyed every moment of teaching and guiding these future leaders in STEM. One of the highlights of my experience was teaching students how to dissect cow eyes, sheep hearts, fetal pigs, and sheep brains, among other specimens. These activities sparked curiosity and gave students a deeper understanding of the human body and biology. Equally rewarding was the opportunity to educate them about important topics like personal health, nutrition, and the reproduction of species. Watching their excitement and eagerness to learn reminded me of the power of education and how vital it is to nurture a love for science at an early age. Baba Sundiata, your leadership has opened so many doors for countless individuals in so many different areas of life. Your passion for education, empowerment, and community building shines through every aspect of your leadership. You have created a space where students can dream big, learn deeply, and feel supported every step of the way. Your dedication to hosting this program has motivated not only the students but also me as I navigate my own journey in the medical field. I am incredibly grateful for the life-changing opportunities this program has provided, and I am thrilled to return as a STEM Junior Counselor this year. I look forward to continuing to inspire and be inspired, learning alongside our students, and contributing to the amazing work of Body Trek. Thank you for everything you do to make Body Trek such an impactful and transformative experience for everyone involved in the program. Thank you for your shared vision, leadership, and commitment to our world. Sincerely, Serenity Medina

Baba Sundiata, You are an extraordinary leader whose impact on families and communities cannot be overstated. As the principal of Betty Shabazz Academy, you have been a dedicated, dependable, and consistent support for our community. From the moment you offered me the opportunity to join the school as a Teacher’s Assistant, you changed the trajectory of my life. Your decision allowed me to return to the workforce and support teachers during a teacher shortage, while remaining close to my four children, all of whom attend this incredible school. This blessing has not only deepened my connection with my own family but also empowered me to give back to our community, nurturing and educating the next generation for a brighter tomorrow. Your dedication goes far beyond the walls of the classroom. You are truly the heart and soul of our village. You invest deeply in the whole child, their family, and the community that surrounds them. Whether it’s your personal contributions to events or your ever-present willingness to lend a helping hand, you lead with compassion, humility, and an unshakable commitment to the well-being of everyone in our school family. For years, you have exemplified this dedication through your leadership in the Lend-a-Hand Tutoring Program. Every week, you took groups of students downtown from 3:45 PM to 7:00 PM to participate in this transformative initiative. There, volunteer lawyers generously offered free tutoring to children from underrepresented communities, providing them with critical academic support and mentorship. This program was more than just tutoring; it opened doors, expanded horizons, and instilled confidence in our children, preparing them to excel in ways they may have never imagined. The countless hours you've invested in ensuring our students had access to such opportunities is a testament to your selflessness and your belief in their potential. You are more than a principal; you are a leader, a role model, and a true village builder. You inspire everyone you encounter with your genuine care, your down-to-earth demeanor, and your commitment to empowering our children and families. My family and I are forever grateful for your leadership, your kindness, and the many ways you have enriched our lives. It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this village under your guidance. I am deeply thankful for the opportunities you have given me to grow personally and professionally, and for the immeasurable difference you have made in the lives of my children and so many others. You embody what it means to lead with love and purpose, and our community is stronger because of you. Thank you Baba! Peacefully, Jade Richardson

Baba Sundiata, Thank you for your support, kindness, and leadership. The impact you’ve had on my life, my family, and our community is beyond measure. When I first came to the school, I was a parent who simply wanted to help, volunteering my time to support my children and the school community. You didn’t have to, but you saw something in me and offered me the opportunity to become a Teacher’s Assistant. That moment changed my life forever. It gave me purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging. As a parent with three children attending this school, I initially thought I was caring for just my own. But now, because of your empathy and leadership, I feel as though I have hundreds of babies to care for, nurture, and guide. You’ve inspired me to see all our scholars as my own and to give them the love, patience, and encouragement they need to succeed. Your patience, kindness, and sincerity in educating and supporting our children are unmatched. Whether it’s staying after hours to help a struggling student, offering words of encouragement to a discouraged parent, or stepping in quietly to support someone in need before they even ask; your actions speak volumes. You give so much of yourself to this school and community, and it often goes unnoticed. Baba Sundiata, you are so much more than a Principal. You are a friend, a mentor, a father figure, and an anchor of our community. You treat every scholar as if they were your own child, and it shows in how you nurture their talents, challenge them to rise above their circumstances, and celebrate their successes, no matter how big or small. You’ve not only inspired me but countless others to give back, to lead with compassion, and to believe in the power of education as a tool for transformation. Thank you for being a shining example of leadership with heart, and thank you for believing in me and others even when we didn’t yet believe in ourselves. I am so honored to walk this journey alongside you and to continue learning from your wisdom. Thank you Baba, for being the friend, mentor, and father figure we all need. Our school is better because of you, and so are we. With all my gratitude and love, Mama Kiara

I met Baba Sundiata when I was 11 years old in the 6th grade. He was my math teacher until I graduated elementary school. I firmly believe that certain people are brought into your life to help guide you on your path, and for me, Baba Sundiata has been a North Star. Baba, you taught me much more than math; you taught me the importance of believing in myself, working hard, and striving for excellence. As a Black man in education, you embodied the very principles of strength, perseverance, and pride that you instilled in each of us. You were one of the first people I saw make a dashiki look cool and smooth! You showed us what it meant to be confident in our identities, and you made us feel that there was no limit to what we could achieve. I thank you for that, Baba. Your commitment to African-centered education in Chicago has been profoundly impactful. I vividly remember how you brought our heritage and history into every lesson, helping us to understand and appreciate our roots, like the time you drew a large-scale image of a pharaoh in our classroom to show us that we come from greatness! You didn’t just teach math, you used it as a tool to connect us to the bigger picture of who we were and who we could become. You made history, culture, and self-respect integral parts of our learning, reminding us that our minds were powerful and that we were part of a rich, proud tradition. And somehow, you still managed to have fun with us, even giving us extra recess time on warmer days (even if the principal gave you a hard time about it!). Beyond academics, you took the time to mentor me and so many others. You didn’t just teach us how to solve equations or understand numbers; you taught us life lessons. You shared your trials and tribulations to offer insight and alternate ways to handle challenges. You connected with each of us individually, helping us navigate difficulties, build confidence, and develop integrity. You’ve been there for me and countless others during tough times, always reminding us that our futures were bright and full of potential. I still can’t quite fathom how you stayed so calm and composed under pressure, but I admire it and strive to emulate it. You believed in us, even when we doubted ourselves, and your encouragement made all the difference. As a Black man in the classroom, you gave us a vision of what leadership, success, and excellence could look like. You helped me see that we, too, could be educators, leaders, and change-makers in our communities. You made me proud to be a Black man who knows his roots and confident in serving our village and youth. Without a doubt, the lessons you imparted go far beyond the classroom. The confidence you instilled in us, the understanding of our heritage, and the skills you taught in math all shaped who I am today. I am forever grateful for the example you set, your unwavering belief in our potential, and the lasting impact you had on my life. Thank you for being a shining example of what it means to teach with purpose, passion, and love. You changed so many lives, and I will always carry your lessons with me—not just in academics but in the way I approach life as a whole. Thank you, Baba Sundiata, for gifting me that Kobe Bryant jersey after our last 8th-grade basketball game (which we lost), and for finding me in the bathroom, crying my eyes out. Thank you for encouraging me to pursue higher education. Thank you for letting me think “It’s a Man’s World” before showing me that women truly run the show. Thank you for showing me what it means to be an active and present father to both a family and a community. Thank you for giving me my first teaching job. Baba Sundiata, thank you for loving me. Because of your love, I’ve learned to love myself and my community. With all my love and gratitude, Baba Des Current Role: Director of Cultural Infusion and Programs at Betty Shabazz Academy
