"Mr. Miano is a dedicated educator, mentor, and coach whose influence extends far beyond the classroom and athletic field. Over the past two years of getting to know Rosario, I have seen firsthand his unwavering commitment to shaping students into the best versions of themselves," said the nominator.
As a coach, he has dedicated himself to multiple varsity sports, fostering discipline, teamwork, and perseverance in his athletes. Since 2013, he has led the Boys Varsity Fencing team, and since 2017, he has coached the Girls Varsity Basketball team. Additionally, his leadership in Girls Varsity Flag Football since 2012, as well as his experience coaching Boys Varsity Wrestling and Girls Varsity Softball, demonstrates his deep passion for youth development. Through his coaching, Mr. Miano has inspired countless students to push their limits, believe in themselves, and grow both on and off the field. Last year, he led the Girls Varsity Basketball team to the Elite 8 for the first time in school history.
Beyond sports, Mr. Miano has played a pivotal role in shaping students' academic and personal futures. He helped establish a STEM program at Gaynor McCown High School for Expeditionary Learning, providing students with hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world applications. His projects, such as "Planning and Designing a Bridge Lab," "Engineering Representation in Robots," and "Learning How to Make Cars and Code," have sparked curiosity and excitement for science and technology. He has also collaborated with physics classes for a catapult challenge, further integrating STEM concepts into engaging, practical experiences. His dedication has expanded students' knowledge and guided many toward future careers in fields like computer science, psychology, medicine, and cybersecurity. He has even secured internships for students, giving them early exposure to professional environments and setting them up for long-term success.
What makes Mr. Miano truly stand out is his ability to connect with students beyond academics. He is more than just a teacher or coach. He is a mentor whom students trust for guidance, motivation, and life advice. He has an incredible ability to inspire confidence, helping students navigate personal challenges while encouraging them to reach their full potential. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or in everyday conversations, he ensures that every student feels valued and supported.
His commitment to fostering a sense of belonging extends to his involvement in school culture, where he continuously works to build strong relationships and a positive learning environment. As part of the STEM program at Gaynor McCown, he has also founded the "Design Club," which helps create a positive learning environment by designing anything the school may need. Mr. Miano's dedication to student success has also been recognized on a national level. He has spoken at an Expeditionary Learning National Conference about "crew" and the importance of creating a supportive, inclusive community within schools. His passion for bringing students together and strengthening their sense of belonging is a testament to the kind of educator he is.
