J.W. McKinney was nominated by a friend, Dena Hensley.

Mr. McKinney is the principal at South Central Elementary School. He is dedicated to the students, staff, and community. This has been very evident during recent events regarding flooding in our community due to Hurricane Helene. His dedication to the students' families and our school has been over and above normal duty. The school was quickly turned into a mini store where community members could come to receive food, showers, and many other items needed to help them recover. He is always thinking of ways to encourage, model, and build up the school.

Mr. McKinney has been an important part of my career for many years as we worked together at South Central doing everything we could to make the biggest difference in the lives of children and families of the community as we could. He taught me complete selflessness! He gives 100% all the time! It was always always such true joy to work with JW through many projects across the years.

Mr. McKinney always puts students first. His love and care for each and every one of them is evident to the faculty and parents of the students. He always strives to go the “Extra Mile” to ensure students’ success. He is supportive of the faculty and staff at the school and treats them like family.

Mr. McKinney is beyond deserving of this award. When Hurricane Helene devastated our area, he went to South Central Elementary School and opened its doors to his families and the community. People around South Central watched everything they owned go down the river during the flood, and he made sure those families knew they were loved and taken care of. When the bridges washed out from the flooding, he was cut off from his own family, but he continued to care for his school family. He provided a safe place to stay and food for families in our area during a time none of us could have imagined. Our area is stronger now than it was before the flood because of people like J.W. McKinney.
