"Mr. Stokes is an exceptional physical education and health teacher whose dedication, spirit, and commitment have been foundational to the transformation and national success of Paul Robeson High School for Human Services. As someone who has been blessed to serve as a three-time National Principal of the Year, I am deeply aware that no principal stands alone. Great educators support every great leader—and Mr. Stokes has been with me every step of the way throughout our journey from near school closure to becoming one of the most respected and nationally recognized high schools in the country. Simply put, David Stokes is one of the cornerstones of our success," said Gordon.
"When I first assumed leadership of Robeson in 2013, the school faced daunting challenges: low academic performance, a threatened closure, and a community seeking stability. From those early days, Mr. Stokes embraced the challenge and became a critical architect of our turnaround. His vibrant presence in the gymnasium, hallways, classrooms, and community events served as a source of joy, safety, and positive energy that radiated across the entire building," said Gordon.
"What sets Mr. Stokes apart is his unwavering belief in the potential of every student. His classes are more than just places to exercise—they are safe havens where students find belonging, confidence, and motivation. His ability to combine physical wellness with emotional well-being, team-building, and mentorship has had a measurable impact on our student climate and culture. In fact, our school's nationally acclaimed safety record, sharp decline in disciplinary issues, and consistently high student engagement are directly linked to the culture Mr. Stokes helped build and maintain. Whether leading a spirited gym class, organizing community fitness events, coaching, or mentoring students through difficult moments, Mr. Stokes exemplifies what it means to be an educator who leads with heart, humor, and high expectations. His jovial personality and authentic connection to students make him one of the most beloved figures in our school community—students and staff alike gravitate toward his positivity, his professionalism, and his unwavering support," said Gordon.

David is a special teacher with over 20 years of changing the lives of young people in the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding county. He is an excellent Health and Wellness teacher, coach, and counselor. His ability to lead and guide with a gentle but firm hand is a value that you cannot find in a lot of people. His ability to speak with kindness is his superpower. David is a wonderful candidate!
Stokes was one of my football couches when I was in high school from 2006-2010 at then Simon Gratz (now Mastery Charter). He was highly motivational and helped keep the positive attitude of the team even during the tough times. I’m sure nothing has changed and LifeChanger of the Year sounds very fitting for Stokes!
Dave Stokes is a dedicated educator who truly loves what he does. He has a natural way of bringing people together and building strong, meaningful connections. I am proud to recommend Dave for the Life Changer Award. As a dedicated Health and PE teacher, he goes far beyond teaching curriculum—he models integrity, and perseverance every day. He is such a great role model for his student's who don't always have the best support system. As a multi-sport coach, he mentors students in teamwork, leadership, and resilience. As an Eagle Scout, his impact extends outside the classroom through his involvement in Scouts by volunteering as social chair for 2 Troops as well as being Program Director for a week long Cub Scout Day Camp. Whether on the field, in the gym, or in the community, he consistently invests his time and energy into helping young people grow into confident, capable individuals. As a devoted husband, father, and loyal friend, he leads by example in all areas of life, making a lasting and positive difference in the lives of students, colleagues, and families alike.
David and I have had an undeniable bond since the first grade. The first three letters of our last names are the same which meant we were together from the start.

I have worked closely with Dave for over a decade, and I have been consistently impressed by his unwavering commitment to his school, his students, and the broader community. Through my company’s program, American Dream 101, I have spent the past 20 years training more than 1,000 teachers from over 400 schools across 23 cities to incorporate real-world life skills into their curriculum. Among all of those educators, Dave stands out as one of our strongest and most genuine supporters.
I still remember the first time I met Dave. He took me out to lunch and insisted on paying out of his own pocket—something that almost never happens to me. When I tried to object, he simply said, “I want you to know how much I appreciate what you’re doing around the country and with our school.” That moment spoke volumes about who he is: thoughtful, generous, and deeply invested in others.
Since then, we have worked with hundreds of students from Paul Robeson High School in Philadelphia each year, and the results speak for themselves. Dave is the kind of leader everyone relies on—the first person you think of when something needs to be done, and done right. His leadership among the faculty is legendary, and students consistently seek him out for guidance, encouragement, and support.
I know firsthand what it takes to truly change lives. When I think about the impact Dave has had on students, staff, and the community, I cannot imagine a more deserving individual for this important award.
I’ve had the pleasure of working side by side with Dave for 10 years coaching girls softball. He exemplifies what it means to be a great coach on and off the field. He leads by example, supports his players and develops athletes into not only better players but into better people. His dedication to his profession goes far beyond the classroom and I couldn’t think of someone more deserving of this award the Dave Stokes.

I had the privilege of being David’s department chairperson at his very first teaching assignment, Kensington High School in Philadelphia. Within a short period of time I knew David would be successful in his chosen career and an invaluable asset to any physical education department or coaching staff fortunate enough to have him. David Stokes brings enthusiasm and passion to everything he does. David has an affinity for working with young people and he quickly engenders their confidence and respect. I have seen the most unmotivated students in his classroom become eager participants in physical education class thanks to to David’s patience, his unwavering support of each student and his ability to structure classes so there are activities for everyone to enjoy and reach some level of success at.

I am beyond proud to support my friend’s nomination for Life Changer of the Year, as I have seen firsthand how his impact stretches far beyond the gymnasium walls. While many see a PE/Health teacher, I see a mentor who uses physical activity as a bridge to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging in every student he encounters. He has a unique gift for recognizing the kid standing on the sidelines and giving them the tools to realize their own potential, teaching them that "wellness" is as much about mental strength and character as it is about physical health. His energy is infectious, and his genuine care for his students' futures has transformed the culture of his school into one of inclusion and growth.
I have known David Stokes for over 25 years and have been through many life stages but when it comes to the role of Teacher, he takes that very personally and seriously. He goes above and beyond using his own resources to make sure his students have fun, positive experiences and that’s what many of his students need. His commitment and positivity make an immense impact on all of his students, making his classroom a better place. He is very deserving of this achievement.
I wish I knew exactly what to say to fully convey how much David should get this award. David is so selfless, and it truly is all about the children for him. He has dedicated his life to helping others from a very young age. In addition to multiple other reasons David is so deserving of this award, being an eagle scout has truly contributed to making him the amazing person he is today. Sincerely wishing to pay it forward, he truly wants to help each child achieve their fullest potential, as so many great people invested in him. Dave Stokes for the last 22 years has dedicated his life to educating students through health and physical education. Not only does Dave devote his time as a teacher and coach he devotes his time to be a mentor and role model to his students too. An example of this was at a home basketball game. The National Anthem would not play. So instead of not playing the National Anthem….Dave grabbed the mic and belted out a beautiful rendition of this song. Dave would be an outstanding life changer of the year recipient.
Dave is a great person and mentor. His is a teacher, coach and scout leader. Dave takes time away from his family and friends to help our youth. Dave is a go to guy for so many people.
Stokes is the best of the best. From my teacher to now my coworker and he still has the impact on the student he did when I was younger. Many of my high school memories involve him. He was the reason I won Student of the month and the reason I continued being my an athlete my high school career!
Dave puts everything he has into his kids and with a smile and his own "dave" take on things. he is available and really cares about them and where they are now and where they are going. all teachers should like doing their jobs as much as Dave.
Dave Stokes is an incredibly valuable Scouting volunteer leader for us, and we feel so very luck to have him. He joins his wife every year in creating and implementing an amazingly successful summer camp for young Cub Scouts, and the boys and girls get so much out of the program. It’s fun, engaging and educational, and it has consistently received wonderful reviews from Cubs and their parents. In addition, he serves both of our Scout troops by managing and arranging literally *every* social event, including all the refreshments and decorations - he’s amazing! We are truly honored to recognize and support Dave with this award - he absolutely does change lives for the better!

David Stokes is an amazing person. He is a highly respected teacher but also a leader in the community. I've worked with Dave at Cub Scout summer camps and he is one reason why I keep coming back to volunteer. He is a great leader and is kind and respectful to everyone. His positive attitude and ability to "pivot" in stressful situations keeps everyone calm. He is a fun person and the kids always leave happy! Mr. Stokes made my daughters high school career safe! From 7th grade through the beginning of 10th she had issues at school. She was smaller, she was always top of her class and she was part of the Nations #1 cheer squad, this made her a target. When she started attending Robeson all of the issues with the other students stopped. Mr. Stokes stops problems before they get too big. He encouraged all of his students to be better people on a daily basis. And most importantly he made students want to come to school. Mr. Stokes is a life changer! My daughter was able to have a great high school journey and I was able to breathe because of him.
