To fully understand the last ten months, one must take a short journey into the world of Ms. Keller and her classroom.
The story begins in the fall of 2018, when the school resource officer started working at Lake Alfred Elementary School, a 36-room, seven-acre beige campus that quickly became monotonous. Seeking a way to brighten things up, he asked the principal for permission to paint one classroom wall at his own expense. The principal agreed.
After several teachers declined the offer, one finally said yes: Ms. Keller. Her only condition was that she be allowed to choose the color. Her choice: neon green. She selected the wall opposite the entrance door so that she could see it every morning when she walked in. That single wall, visible through the open classroom door, sparked a movement. Over the years, it has inspired countless teachers to personalize and transform their classrooms. The neon-green wall marked the beginning of something special.
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, Ms. Keller became the school's most frequently quarantined teacher. Rather than let the situation dampen spirits, she and the school resource officer turned her quarantine into a playful narrative: "Her Majesty's MI-6 Training." Using real-life stories, they built classroom "evidence" and created spy-themed adventures, all inspired by her previous year's Halloween costume, Violet Incredible.
Her creative teaching style blossomed from there. She brought reading lessons to life by dressing up as The Cat in the Hat, transformed writing projects into a five-day cooking competition modeled after Gordon Ramsay's shows, and constantly sought ways to make learning memorable.
One day, the resource officer was asked to cover her class when Ms. Keller ran late to a district meeting. She thought she was attending a simple Q&A session about the Teacher Coaching Program, but it turned out to be an interview. To her surprise, she was accepted into the program, a decision that would change the trajectory of her teaching career.
The program required video evidence of classroom proficiency. Ms. Keller's creativity shone as she built makeshift film rigs using broom handles, meter sticks, and American Girl dolls as "actors." The final project took longer than expected, and on one occasion, she stayed so late working on it that she slept on her classroom floor to avoid the dangerous commute home and back for the next school day.
In the summer of 2024, Ms. Keller faced challenges in purchasing a home. She rebounded with her trademark optimism, returning in the fall to a custom classroom styled like a mid-century modern home, complete with a terrazzo fireplace. Inside, she designed a space that blended the worlds of Disney's The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. The exterior mirrored Violet Incredible's superhero persona and featured a design studio reminiscent of Edna Mode's workspace. Inside, students left their "capes" behind and stepped into a high-tech learning environment filled with motivational artwork, dynamic video systems, and a "factory floor" where ideas were tested in real time.
With a class of 33 students, Ms. Keller emphasized life skills, accountability, and collaboration. Her classroom operated like a real factory, where students applied for and rotated through classroom jobs to maximize their learning.
By January 2025, her lessons were as immersive as ever. When teaching about the American West of the early 1900s, she arrived dressed as a character from the Hallmark series When Calls the Heart. Later that year, she appeared as Theodore Roosevelt on Safari. In September, she recreated 1770s Colonial America, complete with sweet tea later "taxed" by King George III (played by the principal). The mock revolution that followed showed just how deeply her students engaged with history; they didn't just read the stories, they lived them.
Beyond her classroom, her compassion extended to her home life. In her first year of teaching, she and her mother became foster parents to two children. Under their care, both thrived, now on track to finish college after graduating high school, thanks to her philosophy that "high school prep begins in middle school, and college prep begins in high school." The eldest is currently enrolled at Southeastern University, her alma mater.
As the 2025 school year began, Ms. Keller joined the Lake Alfred Elementary PBIS Team, revitalizing the school's culture by infusing new energy into "The Lion Way." Her leadership made the motto part of everyday life, spoken in announcements, videos, and greetings throughout the school.
Ms. Keller also serves as the statewide academic coach for the fifth-grade A-Team, leading them to victory in competition and organizing an extraordinary field trip to Walt Disney World. There, students turned the parks into a living classroom, conducting economic research through a 400-item scavenger hunt across three parks in one day. The trip was approved because of her meticulous academic planning.
After school, Ms. Keller continues to invest in her students through twice-weekly tutoring sessions and a voluntary Bible study held two mornings a week. Attendance is strong, and discussions focus on real-world issues from a faith-based perspective.
Recently, her passion for teaching expanded beyond her classroom. She developed a professional development program called "Teacher Toolbox," designed to give educators practical tools to thrive. What began as a local workshop quickly grew into a statewide initiative. Her most recent presentation, delivered at the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children, even inspired a student teacher to apply for a position at Lake Alfred Elementary so they could learn from her. That aspiring teacher is now employed at the school, spending three hours each day observing Ms. Keller in action.
Both personally and professionally, Ms. Keller exemplifies dedication, creativity, and heart. Her faith, passion for education, and tireless commitment to her students create a classroom filled with purpose, joy, and resilience. As one colleague aptly put it, "She is the real deal." Every morning, Ms. Keller enters her classroom with a smile, projecting enthusiasm, passion, and a belief in "solutions, not problems." Her work ethic and character embody the very best of what it means to be an educator.
