Shirley Johnson was nominated anonymously.
In just her first year with Pascagoula School District, she has made an extraordinary impact on her students, our program, and the community at large. From the moment she stepped into the classroom, she brought not only technical skill and industry knowledge but also a passion for teaching that inspired her students to strive for excellence.
Despite being new to our district, she quickly earned the respect of both her peers and students through her dedication, patience, and clear commitment to student success. One of the most outstanding achievements of her inaugural year was guiding her students to compete—and win—in welding competitions. These accolades are a reflection not just of student talent but of her ability to prepare, encourage, and elevate them to reach their full potential. She sets high standards and works tirelessly to ensure her students meet them. Last year was not without personal and professional challenges.
Tragically, she lost a student due to complications from a head injury. In the face of this heartbreaking loss, she displayed strength, grace, and compassion—supporting her students through grief while continuing to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment. Her ability to carry on in the wake of such tragedy, without letting it diminish her dedication to her remaining students, speaks volumes about her character and resilience.
Mrs. Johnson has been thriving in her second year with the district. She received accolades for being named the FY25-26 Teacher of the Year for College & Career Technical Institute. In every respect, Mrs. Johnson has exceeded expectations. She is more than just a teacher—she is a mentor, a role model, and a cornerstone of our career and technical education program.
