Music that Describes Natasha
Natasha Campbell was nominated by a colleague, Olga Shatalova.
Ms. Campbell can be described in three words as inspiring, dedicated, and transformative. She has been teaching for over 30 years and has truly shaped the lives of generations of students and teachers alike. When she first began, the German program offered only two hours of instruction a day. Through her vision, hard work, and passion, she built it into a thriving full-time program with three German teachers—a rare achievement, especially in rural Montana. Her influence extends far beyond her own classroom.
"One of her former students became her student teacher and is now the department head and a full-time German teacher. I myself was his student teacher, and now teach German as well. Her dedication quite literally created a lineage of teachers who continue her legacy—she has changed the course of our professional lives and countless students' futures," said Shatalova.
Ms. Campbell currently teaches the first level of German, while the two of us teach German II through AP. The students who come from her classes are always enthusiastic, well-prepared, respectful, and motivated to learn. Because of her, Billings West High School has one of the most extensive and successful German programs in the United States.
Her classroom is legendary—warm, welcoming, and filled with German traditions, learning visuals, and memories of her students. Former students visit often to say hello, grab a piece of candy, and share where life has taken them. She knows every student by name, notices when they need help, and acts immediately—whether it's arranging food, clothes, or emotional support. She also organizes fundraisers through the German Club to help students in need.
Her leadership is grounded in compassion. She is known schoolwide for her innovative teaching methods, tireless professional development, and unwavering moral integrity. Ms. Campbell leads with heart and inspires others to do the same.
"There is no doubt—Natasha has changed lives. She has built a program, a community, and a legacy that continues to grow. She is the LifeChanger in our lives and in the lives of all who have had the privilege to learn from her," said Shatalova.
