He brought in the program called “real talk,“ and it is incredibly successful. I saw this program transform young men’s lives and know without a doubt that Clarence is at the head of that change. He does not hide his background, his struggles, and his accomplishments and feel the boys need to know obstacles can be overcome.

It has been an honor to serve alongside Mr. Swearengen the past 5 years at Vine Middle Magnet School. An honest "real talk" message is what he provides students, staff, parents, and community members on a daily basis. As educators, we never really know the impact of our work on young lives. However, it is evident when you spend time with Mr. "C" of the impact he is making in our school and community. Current students seek time and advice from him each day. What is remarkable though is the number of former students that return to Vine on an annual basis to visit, provide updates on their lives, and to continue to seek advice from Mr. "C". I cannot imagine a more deserving Life Changer than Mr. Clarence Swearengen. We are blessed to call him a friend and colleague here at Vine Middle.

Dametraus Jaggers Posted over a year ago

I have known Clarence since I came to Knoxville six years ago. At the time, I was working at the University of Tennessee in the process of developing a program for Black male students. I reached out to many in the local community and Clarence was one of the first people to reach back out. He was willing to support in any way because his focused was on creating opportunities for young people to be successful and he didn't care about who would get the credit he just wanted to be involved in creating opportunities. Knox County Schools and the city of Knoxville are blessed to have such a hard working individual who is selfless and committed to our young people.

admit it back in the day, you probably rolled your eyes at that one teacher who "nagged" you to do better. But now you understand the bigger lessons they were trying to teach you.

Rishayla Posted over a year ago

Teachers give up their personal and family time to grade papers, prepare lessons, and attend workshops. Tell them their extra work means a lot to you. The compliment will certainly mean a lot to them.

Philistia Turman Posted over a year ago

Mr. Swearengen is a great role model to all the kids he has ever come across but especially the young men. He takes time out to really talk with them when he sees them going in the wrong direction and lets them know you can make mistakes but learn from them. He has real talk and brings in memtors and role models from the community to speak to the students. He is a father figure to those who doesn't have one in their life. He's what the kids would call"real" he doesn't try to sugar coat anything he is just real with them. This is what makes him a true life changer because he has changed the direction in which some kids would have gone into a good direction instead of a bad one. For this reason I feel he deserves this award and more.

Randy Sparks Posted over a year ago

Proud to work with Clarence Swearengen. He is a great role model for these kids and does everything he can to help them be successful in life.

Whitney Hammond Posted over a year ago

Although I have known him for only a very short time, Clarence has taught me how to be a better role model for the youth in our community. Changing lives does not always require grand gestures, and Clarence knows this. Checking in on students, showing them kindness, and modeling strong morals are all "little things" that Clarence does everyday to make a big difference.

Charlie Edmonds Posted over a year ago

Mr. Swearengen is ever present and positive with the students at our school. He’s always around with a cheerful spirit and willing attitude. He has encouraged me constantly since my first year as a teacher, and makes me feel like I can continue, even when things get challenging. I believe that the kids he interacts with daily share these same feelings about him!

Corey Dugan Posted over a year ago

Mr. C is a top-notch person, a real class act. It is easy to see how he cares about the staff, students, and community of Vine. He never hesitates to pat a person on the back and be positive. Mr. C always jumps at the chance to help out in any way that he can. He is a true leader and a good person. I'm thrilled to work with him each and every day and appreciate all that he does to help our students!

Angel Ortiz Posted over a year ago

For the short time I have worked with Mr. C he has been absolutely incredible. The students ask to speak to him by name because they have that trust in him that is priceless for these kids. He has also helped me work out behavioral situations with students and is someone you can confide in.

Suzanne Rodger Posted over a year ago

Mr. Swearengen is a wonderful role model and leader at Vine Middle Magnet School. He has such a welcoming, genuine personality and is constantly visible in the hallway supporting students and staff. Students know he is there to help them and that he is there always looking out for their best interests. He is truly a life-changer to this community.

Erica Murrell Posted over a year ago

Mr. Swearengen is a wonderful leader, for both colleagues and students. He is able to talk to struggling students on their level and help them set and achieve goals. That is an important ability for an administrator, and it's a strength that more school leaders should have!

Niya Grimes Posted over a year ago

Clarence knows just what to say and/or do to get a person to positively change a bad habit or to create a new habit to be a better person. He is most definitely a life changer.

Justin Lowe Posted over a year ago

This is my first year working with Mr. Swearengen, and I see daily how hard he works to better the lives of the people he comes in contact with. When dealing with either students or staff, Mr. Swearengen always tries to deliver a positive message and makes sure you know that he has your back.

Kendra Berry Posted over a year ago

Mr. C shows a relentless commitment to our students and our community. "Positive role model" simply does not communicate how much he has meant to our students over the years. He has been a father figure, a motivator, a challenger, someone who will listen, and so much more!

Jason Kindel Posted over a year ago

Clarence is the type of person that goes above and beyond with the students here a Vine. As an administrator, it is hard to find someone who cares as much as he does. I feel that he is loved by many and that we are the luckiest community to have such a wonderful human being. He is one that not only talks the talk, but walks the walk, which is seen everyday here a VMMS.

One reason why Mr. Swearengen deserves this reward is, every Tuesday and Wednesday Mr. Swearengen brings in an guest speaker to talk about what steps we need to become men. Another reason why Mr. Swearengen deserves that reward is, in real talk he will takes us a lot of places such as Georgia,Washington D.C, etc. A third reason Mr. Swearengen deserves that reward is, he is very inspirational to everyone no matter what we do. Finally, the last reason I think Mr. Swearengen should get that reward is every single day he will go to every class room and say¨I love you students.¨ I also think of him as an uncle because he does anything in his will power to help make us a better community, a better school, how to make all of us better young men, and every Tuesday we have a guess speaker to help us know how to turn from a young men to a man.

Mr. C goes above and beyond for our kids at school. Under his leadership, The "Real Talk" group talks about things that really matter manners, ethics, relationship building, and conflict resolution. Not ever thing you learn in school comes from a book and these are the skills that will set students apart from their peers. Support C in this venture to allow our kids to see things outside of the community.

I've known Clarence Swearengen since his playing days with the University of Tennessee. I'm proud to see the difference that he is making not just at Vine Middle Magnet School but in Knoxville. He's done a great job bringing in guest speakers to his Real Talk program to expose the kids to diversity and positivity that might not see in their normal day. It is obvious how much he cares and goes above and beyond to enrich his student's lives. He is able to impact these kids in so many ways that extend beyond the classroom. I know Clarence is the epitome of a Lifechanger!

"Mr.C" poors his whole heart into the troubled students of Vine Middle School. He helps the students to know and believe in themselves. They are able to see outside their current situation to a brighter successful future and, he accomplishes all of this by developing real life connections with his students. Mr. Swearengen is well deserving of the LifeChanger award!
