Music that Describes Cesar

Cesar Nina was nominated by his colleague, Maria Paris.

Mr. Nina is a LifeChanger because he doesn't just talk about going above and beyond; he lives it every single day. He ensures that every school event features free food so that all families can attend without financial worry. Parents don't have to choose between putting dinner on the table and participating in their child's education. They attend events, bring siblings and grandparents, and become part of the school family because Mr. Nina opened the door wide and said, "Everyone belongs here."

His vision for students extends far beyond the classroom walls. He understands that his school's mission as a marine science school means nothing if students can't experience the water firsthand. To that end, Mr. Nina arranged swimming lessons for the children. He forged a partnership with the local aquarium, bringing the wonders of ocean life within reach of every student. These aren't just field trips or extras. They're Mr. Nina's way of ensuring that his school's marine science mission becomes a lived reality for every child who walks through the doors.

"When we earned our designation as an Ocean Guardian school, Mr. Nina rolled up his sleeves alongside teachers, parents, and students to build a pathway garden," said Paris. "He didn't just give his approval. He helped with fundraising efforts, made calls, wrote grants, and did whatever it took to turn our environmental commitment into something tangible and beautiful that students could tend and learn from every day."

The most telling measure of Mr. Nina's character came when the school faced budget challenges. Faced with impossible choices, he made a decision that speaks volumes about his priorities: he chose to go without an assistant principal so that he could keep more teachers and staff. Mr. Nina took on double the workload without complaint. He knew that every staff member made a difference in a child's life, and he refused to let budget numbers determine how many caring adults would be there for his students each day.

Mr. Nina embodies what educational leadership should look like at its truest. He doesn't lead from a distance or hide behind policies and budget reports. He leads from the heart, understanding that a school is more than a building and that students are more than test scores. They're futures waiting to unfold, and he's determined to give every single one of them the resources, experiences, and support they need to thrive.

"In a world that often measures success in numbers and efficiency, Mr. Nina measures it in smiles at family events, in the wonder on a child's face at the aquarium, in the growth sprouting from our Ocean Guardian garden, and in the knowledge that very few staff members were lost to budget cuts on his watch," said Paris. "He's not just a principal. He's a hero in a shirt and tie."

Our principal, Cesar Nina, lives by the phrase, Always try to leave things a little better than how you found them. From the moment our students and families fill the sidewalks, the gears of an attentive team begin with the importance of a top-of-the-morning arrival—by directing traffic, opening car doors, and assisting children off their bus— setting a positive tone of togetherness. In just six years, Cesar Nina has implemented transformational changes, guided by a genuine and progressive attitude, often requiring change by letting go of the old and embracing a new way of thinking. In streamlining and sharing best practices our teachers and students can reflect on their hard work and dedication which now includes both co-teaching and dual language classrooms. Jefferson Marine Science Magnet in Norwalk, CT has been recognized by the State of Connecticut, as a School of Distinction, for its academic growth and for closing achievement gaps within historically marginalized student groups for the 2024-2025 academic school year. Located on the Long Island Sound, we partner with our local Maritime Aquarium’s educational program and have also been recognized as a NOAA Ocean Guardian School, birthing ocean stewards, garden keepers and schools of guppies. Meanwhile, Mr. Nina focused on engaging parents and students with their input and feedback, securing funds that assure students would have the opportunity to learn how to swim. We are fortunate to benefit daily from having Cesar Nina as our leader and as one of our staff, so beautifully expressed, “Mr. Nina is not just our principal—he is a supportive leader, an understanding parent, an engaging partner, a close-knit brother, a loving hero, and someone who is deeply loved.”

Mr Nina is a fair and nurturing principal. He leads with compassion maintaining high expectations where the children feel safe and valued. He has cultivated a sense of belongingness not just for students but for families as well. His open communication with parents and sending out constant updates gives us parents a sense of security that our kids are in the right environment. Being able to experience leadership in another school district, I can say that Mr Nina is a leader who stands out because he made Jefferson a community where the kids feel excited and happy to be in school, confident and included.

I couldn’t tell you the name of a single principal I ever had. I’m so grateful that my son is growing up in a very different school culture. He not only knows who Mr. Nina is, but feels comfortable approaching him and asking for status updates on the book fair, for example. Mr. Nina is approachable, accessible, and present. He’s there at drop-off, taking kids from cars, and at pick-up, directing traffic and sending students off with care. He’s involved. He genuinely cares about making a difference and is committed to doing so. We are incredibly lucky to be part of Jefferson Elementary under his leadership.

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to say how truly grateful we are for Principal Nina. He has been more than a school leader — he has been a source of strength, compassion, and reassurance for our family. When our son was struggling in kindergarten, we felt worried and unsure of what to do — but Principal Nina stood beside us the entire way. He listened to us, supported us, and made sure our son was treated with patience, fairness, and love. In that moment, he didn’t just act as a principal — he showed us what it means to truly care about children and families. His kindness, his calming presence, and his unwavering commitment to doing what is right have touched our lives in a way we will never forget. Because of him, our son felt supported… and so did we. Principal Nina leads with heart, integrity, and compassion every single day, and the impact he has on students, families, and the entire school community is truly life-changing. We are so proud to support him, and we believe with all our hearts that he deserves this award — because he is, without question, a true LifeChanger. With gratitude, The Vlicky Family
