Music that Describes Julie

Julie Signore was nominated by her colleague, Maria Paris.

Some teachers fulfill their duties, while others redefine what it means to dedicate themselves to children and families. Ms. Signore falls into the latter category—a woman whose 25-year teaching career has been marked not by the passage of time, but by the countless lives she has transformed along the way. Walk through the school building after 6 pm on any given evening, and you'll likely find her there. While most of the staff have headed home to their own families, she's in her classroom making candy grams for students, carefully wrapping gift bags for the after-school program, or preparing tomorrow's lesson with the same enthusiasm she brought to her very first day of teaching a quarter-century ago. The late hour doesn't matter to her; what matters is that every child feels celebrated and seen.

Her commitment extends far beyond the academic curriculum. When a student needs a warm coat as winter approaches, she provides it. When families can't afford toys or supplies for celebrations, she fills the gap without hesitation or fanfare. She has never once said no to a child in need or a family asking for support. Her classroom is not only a place of learning, but a sanctuary where students know they'll find warmth, acceptance, and someone who genuinely believes in their potential. She doesn't just teach her students; she runs the after-school program, ensuring that children have a safe, enriching place to be when the school day ends. She creates opportunities where none existed before, opening doors for students who might otherwise be left behind. Every activity she plans, every snack she provides, every moment of extra help she offers—it all comes from a heart that cannot bear to see a child miss out on any opportunity to succeed.

To her colleagues, she is more than a coworker. She's a true friend. She's the one who listens when you're having a difficult day, who celebrates your victories as if they were her own, and who always seems to know when someone needs encouragement or a helping hand. She builds up those around her with the same generosity of spirit she shows her students, creating a culture of support and collaboration that makes our entire school stronger.

Her recognition as Teacher of the Year was not just an acknowledgment of her excellence in the classroom, though she excels there. It was a recognition of who she is as a person: someone who gives without counting the cost, who loves without conditions, and who shows up—day after day, year after year, late into the evening—because she genuinely cannot imagine doing anything else.

Twenty-five years of teaching. Twenty-five years of staying late. Twenty-five years of providing for students who need coats, toys, and hope. Twenty-five years of never saying no. Twenty-five years of being the kind of teacher every child deserves and every parent prays their child will have.

"She doesn't do this work for recognition or awards, though both are richly deserved. She does it because she sees potential in every child who walks through her door. She does it because she understands that education isn't just about reading and math—it's about making sure every student knows that someone cares about them, believes in them, and will fight for their success. She is a LifeChanger if ever there was one," said Paris.

My daughter loves Mrs Signore because she is funny, a very patient teacher and has strong connections with each student. She is very kind and she “pushes” her students to be their best. Her kindness makes the classroom a comfortable and positive place for everyone.

Julie is an amazing teacher! She is one of the hardest working people I know dedicated to her students and staff, and truly passionate about teaching.

After 20 years of being at Jefferson, I will credit Julie as one of the main reasons I stayed and saw the positive influence I could have with my students, she taught with wisdom, patience and a great sense of humor, we all appreciated. I even started bringing my daughter on, "Bring Your Daughter to work Day" she saw at Jefferson, the teachers, the positive environment and the joy we all brought to our jobs with the help of Julie, who lived and worked through many changes in our administrators- some good, some not so good, but she stayed throughout. Julie encouraged my daughter and she is now a Norwalk Public School teacher too, without her influence, I don't think she would have stuck it out- being educated as an educator isn't easy, students are not easy, nothing about our jobs was easy- but we all made a difference, Julie with her students and her respect and love for her co-workers and their families. I am so glad she was nominated, it was my reward just to be able to teach with her!
