Music that Describes Kathryn
Kathryn Garmon was nominated anonymously.
Mrs. Garmon does not just check out books. She helps children write their futures. As the library media specialist at Bob Harding-Shawmut Elementary, she has transformed the school library into a sanctuary of "comfort, confidence, and love." She's a second-generation educator with 21 years of service in the Chambers County School District. She views teaching as a ministry, a philosophy she inherited from her parents and one she lives out every day through her "unconditional love" for her students.
Mrs. Garmon's impact is best summarized by her personal theme song, "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield. She teaches her students that life is an open book and that they are the authors. Her classroom is a place where young researchers become experts. She guides children as young as five through complex biographical research, teaching them to navigate library books, e-books, and the internet to find their "ah-ha" moments.
By teaching the story of Ruby Bridges, she helps her students understand that they have the power to change the world regardless of their age. She fosters a classroom culture that celebrates the "beautiful, colorful faces" of her students, ensuring every child feels seen and heard. Mrs. Garmon's goal is to ensure that when a child leaves her room, they feel like family. She refers to herself as their "forever cheerleader," a promise she keeps by following the progress of her former students long after they leave her halls.
Her influence extends far beyond the library walls. She is a pillar of her school and community, serving on the School Leadership and Social committees and mentoring new educators. Her leadership is defined by a desire to bring joy to her colleagues and motivation to her peers. Her community involvement includes serving as a TRIBE Leader, helping lead the Peer Helper Program to develop student leaders. She serves as a worship leader and co-chairperson at Fairfax Methodist Church, and works with "Church Chicks" for community outreach. As a founding member of the Junior Variety Club, she has dedicated 15 years to local service projects and fundraisers.
"Kathryn Garmon is a LifeChanger because she bridges the gap between academic achievement and emotional security. She works tirelessly to 'put the pieces of the puzzle together' for every individual student, ensuring they experience the thrill of success. To her, a mistake is just a chance to 'write a new chapter.' She is not just teaching children how to read; she is teaching them how to live life to the fullest with kindness and courage. For her 21 years of dedicated service, unwavering commitment to her "school family," and ability to inspire students to become the authors of their own incredible stories, Kathryn Garmon is a true LifeChanger of the Year," said the nominator.
