Merriel Jennings was nominated anonymously.

Although Ms. Jennings joined the Fairfax Elementary family only a year ago, her impact has been so profound that she was recently named both the Fairfax Elementary and the Chambers County School District Elementary Teacher of the Year. She is the embodiment of an educator who leads with her heart, ensuring every child feels seen, safe, and deeply loved before a single lesson begins.

Ms. Jennings brings a rich, international background to her classroom. Raised in a missionary family across Ecuador and Jordan, and having spent four years teaching in Malaysia, she possesses a unique cultural empathy. This global experience allows her to connect with diverse families, often serving as a Spanish translator for community programs like Be Still Church and SAV-a-Life. Her transition back to the U.S. has been a gift to the district, as she applies her Master's degree in Special Education with a level of excellence and a world-class perspective that is rare.

In her classroom, the atmosphere is defined by "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. She understands that for students in grades K-3—especially those with diverse learning needs—the classroom must be a "safe place to ask questions, make mistakes, and try new things." She is a LifeChanger because she transforms the often-difficult road of special education into a journey of joy. She replaces dry lessons with "snowball fights," where students throw crumpled math problems and vocabulary words to turn rigorous learning into a high-energy game. She famously states, "I believe that before a student can learn, they must feel loved." This philosophy has built deep trust with her students, who often ask excitedly, "Are you getting me today?" She is a cornerstone of the Fairfax Leadership Team and a self-appointed member of the "fun committee," bridging the gap between general and special education to ensure every teacher feels supported.

Ms. Jennings' dedication extends beyond the bell. Her dream is to eventually expand her reach to families of children with severe disabilities, providing life-skills training and support for those who may not be able to attend public school. Her humility is perhaps her most striking quality; despite her accolades, she remains her own toughest critic, constantly pushing herself to do more for "her kids."

"Merriel Jennings is not just a teacher; she is a cheerleader, a translator, a community servant, and a beacon of happiness. She doesn't just teach students how to read or solve math problems—she teaches them that they are capable, worthy, and loved," said the nominator.
