Mercedes Terry was nominated anonymously.
Ms. Terry can be described in three words: professional, excellence, and innovation. In her very first year of teaching, Ms. Terry has achieved the rare feat of being named Inspire Academy's Teacher of the Year. This honor validates her seamless transition from the professional sector to the classroom. Ms. Terry has bridged the gap between the business world and education by introducing high-impact, "real-world" projects. A standout example is her "Junior Design Team" project, where students simulate a Nike Dunk collaboration with non-athletic brands. This innovative approach teaches cross-market product launching and branding in a way that resonates deeply with Gen Z learners.
Ms. Terry's commitment to her students extends far beyond the marketing curriculum. She recognizes that for students to succeed in business, they must first succeed in their foundational studies. To support this, she hosts daily math tutoring sessions during school hours for LaFayette and Valley High students. As the advisor for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), she actively shapes the next generation of leaders, providing them with the professional skills and certifications needed to enter the workforce or college with confidence.
Ms. Terry teaches her students a profound life lesson: they are their own most important brand. She emphasizes that reputation, work ethic, and integrity are the ultimate marketing tools. By using culturally relevant anchors—such as the resilience of Madam C.J. Walker and the message of overcoming struggles in Lil Durk's "All My Life"—she meets students where they are. Her classroom motto, "Standing on business," has become a rallying cry for students to take ownership of their education and their futures.
A product of the community she now serves, Ms. Terry is driven to pour back into the neighborhood that raised her. She balances the rigorous demands of a first-year teacher—lesson planning, grading, and club advising—with the joys of motherhood to her five-year-old daughter, Kaiva. Her ability to inspire "lightbulb moments" in her students while serving as a relatable, high-achieving role model makes her a true LifeChanger. In her words: "To be selected as Teacher of the Year as a first-year teacher left me speechless... it validates my decision to enter education."
